GIVING IMPACT YOUR YOUR

Shaping the future of our school

AN EXCITING TIME TO BE A SEAHORSE

Dear Seahorse Family,

Thank you! We can’t say anything without saying that first.

Because of you, we have much to celebrate. We received more than $2.8 million in our last fiscal year. This includes exceeding our Bell Tower Fund goal of $1.025 million! And while this is applause-worthy, what’s extra special is that more of you participated.

Our donor base grew by more than 10 percent, and to us, that means we connected with more of our Seahorse family! At the core, having enduring relationships with you is what matters most.

We hope you’ve been to campus recently, but if not, we want to share how our community is buzzing with excitement. Your contributions bring confidence to what we do and who we are. Your generosity is sparking a vibrancy and renewal that honors our past 104 years and propels us into the future.

YOUR GENEROSITY IS SPARKING A VIBRANCY AND RENEWAL

Every conversation we have with you is valuable. We love your ideas and reminiscing. Every contribution of every size matters and creates a solid foundation for us to continue offering what our Seahorses expect and deserve.

In these pages, you’ll read how your giving is making an impact, especially on pages 8 and 35. We hope you relive memories of your time on this beautiful campus. We hope you see familiar names that prompt you to reach out. We hope you grow more excited about our future.

We’ve achieved much with your record-breaking giving, which relieves some financial pressures and opens the door to new opportunities.

Thank you again for supporting the unique education we offer along the Rivah! We are thrilled and honored for the momentum you’ve given us. Won’t you join us again this year to continue this historic momentum together?

Sincerely,

FISCAL YEAR 2024 IN REVIEW

THE WATERFRONT: A PLACE OF WELCOME

Imagining Christchurch without the waterfront would be imagining an entirely different school.

The Rappahannock River has been integral in making Christchurch special. From an internationally known sailing program to its photographic backdrop for student life, the river is an enduring character in the school’s storied history.

If Rob Deane, Waterfront and Sailing Program Director, has his way, the waterfront will be an even more prominent player. And thanks to generous and loyal supporters that vision is becoming a reality.

“I believe the main aspects of life at Christchurch – academics, athletics, and community – come together at the waterfront,” said Deane, who started at the school in November 2023.

In his first year, Deane, who’s also the sailing coach, said he was getting to know the team, building on their performance, and connecting the school to the waterfront. The new fleet was key in elevating the sailing program. Donations came in at nearly $220,000, allowing for 20 new 420 sailboats and passing the retired fleet to the school’s “learn to sail” program. With the new fleet, the school can host national championships and continue to attract the best student-athletes.

Deane is grateful for that investment and excited that the waterfront is becoming a sought-after place for study and play. He said students from the Bahamas are teaching others how to windsurf, and students and faculty are sailing, fishing, and kayaking.

“The waterfront is for everyone. It’s inclusive and accessible,” Deane said. From swimming to paddle boarding to sitting by a fire pit, the waterfront is a place of welcome.

It’s also a place of education.

Deane said the Rappahannock River is a living classroom for performing water tests, studying erosion, tracking animal species, and developing leadership and safety skills. Growing up in Annapolis, Maryland, Deane appreciates life along the water and missed it during boarding school in Pennsylvania. He went on to sail at Boston University and continued competing and coaching, eventually leading him to Christchurch.

In the past, students have enjoyed the waterfront. But there is more intentionality now to use the space and be creative in drawing people there.

“Making good use of the waterfront helps keep kids on campus and together during free time,” Deane said. “We want students to make great memories and look back fondly when they graduate.”

$220k IN DONATIONS BOUGHT NEW SAILBOATS, ENABLING THE RETIRED FLEET TO BE PASSED ON TO THE “LEARN TO SAIL” PROGRAM

We are grateful for these donors who supported our sailing program and helped us get a new fleet of 420 sailboats.

YOUR GIVING TO CHRISTCHURCH MATTERS

Christchurch tuition and fees cover a portion of the true cost of our school’s educational experience. If the true cost were reflected in tuition, it would put our school—and all others like ours—out of reach financially for most people. To bridge this gap and keep our tuition competitive, we rely on your generosity.

Your gifts—designated for specific needs and undesignated for general use—provide critical funding for academics, arts, athletics, financial assistance, faculty and staff professional development, technology, innovation, and more. The Bell Tower Fund is our annual campaign for undesignated giving, and our top fundraising priority each year.

Additionally, your individual participation matters. Participation is a sign of how invested the Christchurch community is in our school’s success and is often a factor for a major gift, a grant, or volunteering one’s time and energy.

Giving to Christchurch happens year-round and through a variety of options:

• The Bell Tower Fund

• Capital Campaigns

• Endowment Giving

• Matching Gifts

• Planned / Legacy Giving

• Restricted Gifts

• Scholarships

We are celebrating the largest fundraising year (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024) in the school’s 104-year-old history! In addition, the number of people who participated in giving increased to the highest level ever! Thank you for your generosity and responding to our requests for support. Seahorses are the best! See how your giving adds up.

DAY OF GIVING

Join us February 5, 2025 for our Day of Giving. February 1921 is when conversations began about establishing Christchurch School, so it’s the perfect time to show our continued commitment. Thanks to your support, in 2024 we raised $100,000, which was applied to The Bell Tower Fund. Giving Day 2025 will have interactive class challenges, real-time updates, and more! Please be on the lookout for more details as we get closer.

60% OF STUDENTS RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID

“Adolescents learn and mature while brain development is impacted by positive and negative stimulation. Christchurch provides our children with a safe space to filter extraneous stimulation and the right support for academic learning, independence, and character development. The learning and living environment—along with academic rigor, multiculturalism, and peer-led socialization and leadership—has prepared our children for success in college and beyond.”

— Stephanie Isaacs and Beth De Santis (Parents of Reed ’22 and Graham ’25)

COMMUNITY BEGETS COMMUNITY

The signs were all around them. Even as teenagers they understood.

The Bishop Brown Hall renovations. Girls’ basketball uniforms to replace the boys’ uniforms being worn by the girls’ team. New tennis uniforms.

“As a student, you see the impact of the donations given to the school,” said Jeanne Courtney Laign ’05. Her sister, Kendall Courtney Webre ’01 agreed. “You recognize it takes money to make the school operate.” Now, both are succeeding in their careers, giving back to Christchurch, and planning for their children to be the next generation of Seahorses.

It takes a community to run Christchurch, and a community is also what Christchurch produces. These sisters know. They’ve been on both sides.

Going where most girls weren’t

When Kendall started as a day student in 1997, three girls were in her class, and there were no female boarding students. The Urbanna native wanted a different high school option and wasn’t daunted at being in the minority. She grew up enjoying water sports and activities and felt connected to Christchurch’s location along the river.

Jeanne Courtney Laign ’05
Kendall Courtney Webre ’01

“It felt like home. I felt like I had walked into a full family of brothers,” said Kendall, who grew up with one sister. “I was fortunate to have had some confidence and sense of self going into high school, but the transition was made easier with having such a warm welcome by everyone.”

Jeanne, who followed four years later and found six girls in her class, said she arrived less sure about herself and her place at Christchurch, but was brought in quickly. “My confidence really grew over my time at Christchurch. I developed close friendships that I still have today.”

Both sisters found the classwork interesting and challenging. They both enjoyed athletics – soccer, basketball, tennis, and field hockey. And both have fond memories of the music and art scene on campus, school trips to Italy and the Grand Canyon, and hijinks on Headmaster’s Hill.

A day they anticipated and dreaded was graduation, at which they both “bawled like a baby.”

“I understood how special and unique the experience was at the time. I knew a chapter of my life was closing, and I would never be able to find that in its entirety again,” Kendall said.

Jeanne remembered feeling like it was “a pretty serious ending and hard to say goodbye. You leave there with high standards. It was a magical place and time.”

Leaving but not gone

They may have left the school, but what they learned and experienced went with them.

“Christchurch set the foundation for me and helped me figure out myself during the most formative time in my life,” Jeanne said. “I came into my own, while being supported and challenged. I developed relationships with the faculty. I was able to take all those skills with me to college.”

Jeanne attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, after her Christchurch field hockey coach recommended her alma mater to her. There, Jeanne met her husband. Today, Jeanne lives in Richmond, Virginia, is a mother of two, and works as an occupational therapist at a neuro-rehab facility for people with brain injuries. She also started a business, Lucy’s Legacy, through which Jeanne is an end-of-life doula who supports people in their final stages of life. The business is named after the mother of a close friend from Christchurch.

Perhaps a seed for helping people was planted in Jeanne’s heart after two fellow students passed away when she was attending Christchurch. Jeanne said the way the school community rallied around the families of those students and everyone on campus made a lasting impression. “It was a beautiful display of the school’s values and culture during a really hard time.”

For Kendall, her path led to graduating from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and then a career in New York. She’s now in Deltaville, about 20 minutes from campus, back along the water she loves. Kendall is the president and co-owner of Norton Yachts with her husband, and they have two children.

JEANNE
Kendall Webre said the guys at school felt like brothers to her.

“Going to Christchurch prepared me for my careers in financial services, sales, and the marine industry,” she said. “All of those are male-dominated professions, but since I went to a school of mostly guys, I was comfortable and confident in those spaces.”

Moving forward

“We have this tiny window of time in our lives between 14 and 18, and it has the most significant impact on who we are, who we want to be, our core values, and our beliefs,” Kendall said. “To be able to share that with others is priceless, but it also comes at a price. I run a small business, but I can’t imagine what it takes to run a school. But I do know that it takes all of us.”

Kendall has served on the alumni council and has helped with fundraising efforts. She now serves on the foundation board. She feels Christchurch has always been tenacious. That’s something she’s proud of, but she also knows it’ll take more than grit to keep Christchurch well-positioned and apportioned.

The sisters believe in giving back to the school that gave so much to them. Every contribution adds up, but they know the number of people who participate matters, too. Grants and other funding sources often look at participation levels when making awards. To see Christchurch into the future, it’s going to take the whole community.

“I’m proud of Christchurch. I hope it stays as beautiful, small, unique, diverse, and welcoming as it always has been,” Jeanne described.

Kendall said, “The sense of community at Christchurch has been consistent in the 25 years since I was a freshman. Even with the ups and downs of life, the beauty and community of Christchurch remains the same. I would like to see that continue. It’s what makes Christchurch a unique and special experience.”

“Thank you for all your support! From new soccer equipment and ping-pong paddles to a well-maintained waterfront and beautiful landscaping, we have a great campus to enjoy.”

— Herman ‘26

Jeanne Laign said she made lifelong friends at Christchurch.

ALUMNI ALUMNI

AWARD AWARD

When the Christchurch alumni family comes together, we all win. But some are extra winners! The Alumni Class Spirit Award is based on the percentage of class members who support our annual giving. The class with the highest participation percentage wins. In the case of a tie, the class who donates the most money wins.

In addition to this announcement, the winning class will be recognized on social media, with a display banner during Homecoming Weekend, and their class year will be on a plaque.

Top Spirit Award in Each Decade

Goes to the class in each decade who has the highest percentage of participation.

The Spirit Award and other challenges are for friendly, fun competition and to encourage connections and relationships. We can’t wait for next year’s Spirit Awards.

Thank you for your participation!

Giving All Students the in School and Life CHANCE TO SUCCEED

You live in the Philadelphia area. A friend is from Bermuda. That friend tells you about a high school in Virginia. Seems like an odd triangle. But not when it points to the right academic solution for your son. This is how the Thayers – David and Laura – came to know about and enroll their son Seamus ’24 in Christchurch.

“Seamus was a tentative learner, not wildly confident in his academic abilities,” David said. “The LSP (Learning Skills Program) at Christchurch provided the support he needed while allowing him to stay in mainstream education.”

Addressing the need

When investing in Christchurch, you’re supporting a key program that makes Christchurch a “differentiator,” according to the Thayers. Students who learn via nontraditional methods get equal access to Christchurch’s high-quality educational and co-curricular environment.

The Forum on Child and Family Statistics reports there are about 25 million children in the United States from ages 12 to 17. The Learning Disabilities Association of America states about 20 percent of students have learning and attention issues. This means 5 million high school students in the U.S. alone need additional academic support and interventions.

Seamus Golden ’24

About 25 percent of the Christchurch student population is enrolled in LSP.

Christchurch serves this population while not moving them to the sidelines. Instead, LSP comes alongside the students where they are, tiering down the support so at graduation they leave with the learning and life skills necessary for their next chapter.

Seamus is experiencing that next chapter now at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina.

“We really can’t say enough positive things about Charlotte Charlton ’02 (a Christchurch Learning Specialist) and LSP,” Laura said. “She really understood him, reassured us, and became a surrogate mother. He got help with his organizational skills and learned how to advocate for himself and get extra help when needed, like when he struggled with math in his senior year. In college, we expect he will continue those skills and make sure he’s visible to his teachers.”

David agreed. “At Christchurch, Seamus had to really work academically. You earn your grades. At his previous school, we started to see too much coddling and some social promotion. We didn’t want that for him. And he didn’t either.”

In fact, it was Seamus who suggested boarding school.

Finding his right place

90% OF GRADUATES ATTEND ONE OF THEIR TOP THREE COLLEGE CHOICES.

Seamus’ early high school experience was affected by the pandemic, and remote learning was challenging. He needed a change and asked his parents to consider sending him to boarding school. He would be the first among his family members to do so.

The Thayers’ family friend knew about Christchurch because of the sailing community in Bermuda. They mentioned the school to the education counselor they were working with. Christchurch emerged as an option to consider, so the family made the five-hour drive for a tour. Christchurch was the first place they visited and, as it turned out, the last. Seamus was immediately convinced, and his parents weren’t too far behind him.

Aside from LSP, the location along the river, the welcoming and down-to-earth vibe, and a grounding in faith and values endeared the whole family.

Seamus enrolled in 10th grade as a 16-year-old and graduated with the Class of ’24.

Not only did Seamus get his footing in the classroom, but he also found his place on the Christchurch basketball and lacrosse teams. The city kid embraced the country and river life. He enjoyed going off campus with local friends to visit their families, and then returned the favor by inviting friends home with him.

“We didn’t think about it at first, but being at Christchurch also gave Seamus opportunities to gain independence and learn important skills like traveling by train and driving long distances,” Laura said. And when he encountered some trouble at school, he learned how to navigate that process and be accountable. “It was handled so well,” Laura said, “and was a good learning experience for him.”

At graduation, Seamus and his parents celebrated all he had gained in his three years at Christchurch. After the traditional ringing of the bell, David and Laura said that Seamus – not one for big emotional displays – burst into tears with his friends. And then they were all crying.

Supporting more Seahorses

“The experience we had at Christchurch as a family was so phenomenal, we want others to have it, too,” David said. The Thayers have supported the school through volunteering and giving including to the capital campaign and an endowed scholarship. “As a donor to other causes, we were impressed that Christchurch takes our support seriously, follows through, and keeps us informed.”

The Thayers also have become like their friend from Bermuda. They tell people about Christchurch and hope that more students from the northeast find their way to the Rappahannock River. They believe that continuing to invest in the school will go a long way in ensuring it stays attractive to faculty and students.

“We were impressed with the restoration of the chapel. Not only because we are a family of faith and can appreciate good architecture, but also because we saw that the school and its supporters are committed to its future,” David said.

Laura agreed. “There is something very special here. In the Philadelphia area, we are surrounded by independent schools and learning support. Seamus could have gone to any of those schools as a day student,” Laura said. “The fact that we ended up at Christchurch really says something.”

LSP – Teaching Skills that Last a Lifetime

Christchurch’s Learning Skills Program supports the success of nontraditional learners – those with learning differences and those with diagnosed learning disabilities – and allows them to thrive in a hands-on learning environment focused on skill acquisition. The hallmark of the program is that it does not see the diagnosis or difference as a deficit, but rather as a representation of the variability of learners with great potential. While providing support for academic success, LSP also emphasizes relationships, study and organizational skills, and the independence that each student will need to succeed in college and beyond.

Laura and David Thayer with Seamus

“My child disliked school for eight years. When she got to CCS, I hoped she would realize students don’t all fit into the same box. And it happened! She is excited about everything and has her self-confidence back!”

— Amanda Gravatt ’93, Associate Director of Community Life and Culture, (Parent of Lyla ’28)

A 47-Year Journey BACK TO CHRISTCHURCH

When Randall “Reed” Williams graduated from Christchurch in 1973, he went to college, lived life, and lost connection with the school and his classmates. He always thought he would reconnect someday, but didn’t expect that would happen on a California interstate about 47 years later.

This is Reed’s story, in his words.

Describe how you came to be a student at Christchurch.

It started with my sister, Ann, getting mono. She needed summer school. We were Episcopalians, and my brother went to Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg. We lived in Hot Springs, Virginia. My parents were sending Ann to St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock. Mom asked if I wanted to do summer school, too, since I would be home alone. I was 15. I said, yes, and off I went to Christchurch. My mom had a theory—not sure why—that each child should have their own school experience to develop their own individuality.

How were your early days at Christchurch?

Mom dropped me off, and that was it. I immediately met some guys and was off and running. After summer school, we decided I would stay. I had turned 16 in July and would be starting my junior year.

Randall “Reed” Williams ’73

John “Ted” Getsinger ’74

Reed and Ted in March 2024 at a Christchurch School alumni gathering in Charleston, South Carolina.

What are some of your school memories?

I remember being in a pie-eating contest. They were freshly baked and so scalding hot you couldn’t eat them. We did a lot of sailing. I drove the school’s bus on occasion. I remember it being really hot. I was from the mountains, so the heat took some getting used to.

How did you stay connected with Christchurch?

I didn’t, but I always thought I would. I became an engineer and earned an MBA. I own and operate an engineering company and travel the country visiting operating sites. You go to school, get married, have kids, move around, and work. Everyone gets busy. But then one day, I got a call from a classmate, Ted Getsinger.

It was during the pandemic. I was driving a rental pick-up truck south on Interstate 5 in the desert of California, heading to Sacramento for work. My phone rings, and it’s Ted. My sister had stayed in touch with friends from St. Margaret’s. She had known Ted, too, and they had recently talked. She gave him my number.

We had a nice long talk. He’s a fabulous guy. The sound of his voice was the same. He had the same sense of humor. It took me right back in time. Since then, we’ve stayed in touch and reconnected with more classmates. We had a reunion of sorts in 2024 in Charleston. This led me to reconnect with Christchurch and the current leadership team.

What

impact did Christchurch have on you?

It was very unusual in my hometown for parents to send their children away to school. When I was home, I wasn’t the same person and neither were my friends. Being at a prep school is an accelerated life experience. It gets you a little further down the road academically and socially. My son, Ryan, went to the Culver Military Academy in Indiana. I saw it

happening to him. I could relate to his time there through my experience at Christchurch.

I found Christchurch to be enjoyable. College wasn’t a tenth of the experience I had at Christchurch.

What is your hope for the future of Christchurch?

Christchurch is offering something that parents are looking for even more now. Public education is experiencing a change. Parents want an option that will provide a strong education in an environment with peers who are looking for the same thing. Peer groups are very important in the high school years. Kids’ brains are at their stickiest.

To get kids through these years and deliver them on the other end as adults is what Christchurch does. It has the answer for parents and the track record to prove it can do it.

What can others learn from your story?

Don’t wait. I’m excited to be back in touch with Christchurch. Unlike my father’s generation who would designate giving through their wills, I don’t think that’s enjoyable. If I want to be a part of something, I don’t want to wait until I’m dead. I want to give now and watch it work and make an impact. This gives me the chance to still experience life at Christchurch. When we were there, people contributed for us, and we never knew them. We can be that. The mission of Christchurch is noble and brave, and we can actively be a part of that.
