On July 1, 2022, Christchurch School welcomed its 17th Head of School, William J. “Billy” Coyle and his wife Mary into the Seahorse family. And their new puppy, River, too!
With nearly twenty years of independent school experience in both boarding and day schools, Billy has hit the ground running and his energy is infectious!
On why he chose a career in independent schools, Billy is quick to reply “I love working with children and young adults. It is definitely a calling deep in my heart.”
On why he felt called to pursue Christchurch, Billy says that “being a Christian school, it felt right in my heart and soul. And from my first visit to campus in August 2021, I knew I found a home. The community was so incredibly welcoming, I felt as though I was supposed to find CCS. The match felt perfect.”
As a former college athlete (starting quarterback at Central Connecticut State University), health enthusiast, and coach, it comes as no surprise that Billy’s favorite pastimes include running, playing basketball, the beach and skimming on the same skimboard he bought in 1987.
A strong and passionate leader, Billy is relationship oriented, community focused, fully engaged, collaborative, and “all in”!
This is an exciting time for Christchurch School and all Seahorses as we boldly begin a new era here on the River! Here’s to Billy and Mary, Christchurch School, our entire Seahorse family, and our second century.
In 1893, North Carolina adopted the Latin phrase Esse Quam Videri as its o cial state motto. In English, the motto reads as “To be, rather than to seem.” For Mrs. Lynne Tatum Little, who hails from e Tar Heel State, the state’s motto could not be more apt. Lynne, who is Christchurch School’s rst female Chair of the Board of Governors, is “all in” with her commitment to Seahorse Nation. In True Blue fashion, time after time Lynne puts thoughts and ideas into action, leads by example, and walks the walk.
Born and raised in Salisbury, North Carolina, Lynne currently resides in Charlotte with her husband of 35 years, Nevan, and their Australian Labradoodle, Tesca. ey also have two grown children, son Carter and daughter Cameron. Carter is also a proud Seahorse alumnus, graduating in 2014, while his sister Cameron graduated from St. Mary’s.
With an impressive resume including dental hygienist, co-manager of a startup community bank, serving on the bank’s board for over 10 years, and then nally starting her own consulting business, Lynne’s family was also connected with the Cheerwine beverage company located in Salisbury. Lynne has also had extensive involvement with the Charlotte chapter of the Junior League, where she “learned all sorts of valuable leadership training and was able to volunteer throughout my local community.”
rough her experiences, Lynne discovered a passion for governance. She currently serves on the following boards: Christchurch School, Piedmont Cheerwine Bottling Company, Carolina Beverage Corporation, Quality Beverage Brands, Central Piedmont Community College Foundation Board and the Charlotte City Club.
On the importance of service, Lynne says “My grandmothers and my mother taught me the importance of giving back to your community. Seeing their example, the desire to get involved with service and giving back came naturally to me.”
On the importance of service through governance, Lynne says “One thing that has remained the same throughout my whole life is the desire to always do my best to help others with whatever skills and attributes I have. Philanthropy and volunteerism is in my blood. Helping others while being the best person I can be is what I love to do and strive for. “
When Lynne and Nevan were asked if they would serve on the Christchurch Parent Council while Carter was a student, the answer was an emphatic “yes!” By the following year, Lynne was asked to serve as President of the Parent Council. Having taken the Parent Council to the next level with her excellent leadership and vision, it came as no surprise when former Head of School, JEB Byers, asked Lynne to become a Governor in 2014, and by 2020 Lynne was named as the rst female Chair of the Board of Governors in the school’s history!
On leading during challenging times, such as the pandemic, economic uncertainty, geopolitical concerns, school leadership transitions, and starting the school’s second 100 years with all of the above, Lynne comments that “Every challenge I have faced in life, whether professional or personal, has turned into a victory as long as I have remembered to trust in the Lord and talk with Him about it. A particular Bible verse I turn to in hard times, Proverbs 3:5, says ‘Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
Leading the school’s Board into the second century is challenging and exciting. I want to do my part to assure that future generations have the same opportunity that our son had. I love serving the school and giving back to the community that embraced our child and our family.
Asked for any nal thoughts she’d like to share, Lynne says “A strong faith in God is what led our family to Christchurch. As Board Chair, I could not be e ective without the amazing governors who comprise the board as well as the school’s Foundation Board. Everyone has Christchurch in their heart, and together we all strive to serve the school to the best of our ability while planning for its success, both today and for the next 100 years.”
Christchurch School’s Centennial Celebration April 8 & 9 was a smashing success. For this event, the school hosted over 400 alumni, parents, friends of the school, current and former faculty/staff, and students.
On Friday, April 8, the celebration kicked off with the school’s Centennial Golf Classic, which ended with cocktails and dinner at the golf course. Attendees were also invited to enjoy three home athletic events on campus throughout the day: Boys Varsity Lacrosse, Girls Varsity Soccer, and Varsity Baseball.
That same evening, 150+ current students celebrated their prom on Bell Tower Hill with the apt theme “A Starry Night at the River.”
Saturday morning began with a 9 a.m. sailing regatta at the Christchurch waterfront. At 10 a.m., guests gathered in the newly renovated and restored St. Peter’s Chapel for a service to honor Christchurch’s centennial and the service of former Head of School, John E. “JEB” Byers. Outside of the chapel, guests perused school history timelines, old yearbooks, and other memorabilia.
Attendees then gathered for a picnic lunch featuring Joe Cameron’s famous fried chicken. Folks then toured the campus to reminisce, attended a school academic/ athletic/co-curricular program fair in the Lewis B. Puller Jr. ’63 Marine and Environmental Science Center, viewed current student artwork and senior projects in The David and Wendy Charlton Fine & Performing Arts Center at Marston Hall, and played pickup soccer and basketball games.
Making up for missing the last two years’ class reunions because of the pandemic, the Classes 1995-’97 celebrated their 25th Reunion, the Classes 1970-’72 celebrated their 50th Reunion, and the class of 1961 celebrated its 60th Reunion. And to cap it off, the school also celebrated the Spirit Award winner, Class of 1961, and the Big Blue winner, Class of 1950!
The celebration continued with roasted oysters, oyster stew, shrimp, and desserts on Bell Tower Hill under a tent with a stunning view of the mighty Rappahannock River. The band Deadrise, featuring former Head of School Dr. David H. Charlton on drums and vocals, as well as other past parents Mr. Norm Faulkner and Dr. Gregg Shivers, provided live music into the night as guests danced and sang along.
Throughout the two-day extravaganza, numerous beloved former faculty/staff and Heads of School returned and connected with former colleagues and students. Additionally, new Head of School Billy Coyle and his wife Mary were able to meet and spend time with the largest Seahorse family gathering in recent memory!
Most importantly, everyone was able to connect and/or reconnect with past and current friends/classmates/teachers and more, to share their life stories since their own graduations, as well as reminiscing about the memories of the last 100 years on the River at Christchurch School.

anks to the Class of 1961, who, on the occasion of its 60th reunion and to mark the school’s centennial celebration, funded this digital yearbook project in order to create a legacy and strengthen connections for all Christchurch School alumni and parents to enjoy.
Over the last 100 years, Christchurch has evolved with its dynamic and innovative approach to learning while still maintaining its traditions, community, and relationships. Yes, some of the faces and names have changed, and there may be a few new buildings on campus, but make no mistake – this is still your school!
Christchurch School is and has been our foundation for the future. We all stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before and we are the shoulders for future generations ... GO BLUE ... and thank you to the Class of 1961 for sponsoring the digital yearbook library!

Jesse Wykle Class of 2001 got a spot on the “Beat Bobby Flay” show, an American cooking competition on the Food Network in December of 2020.
“You go on into the kitchen stadium, right? And you go against another Chef and if you beat this other Chef with a mystery ingredient then you go on to face Bobby,” he said. “[For our dish in the first round] we decided to go with Lumpia and we have a fantastic pork belly. We use some local pork belly from Cartwright Family Farms and Autumn Olive Farms in Waynesboro, VA. It’s basically a Filipino style eggroll with some secret sauces. It’s fantastic.”
Jesse is owner operator of Aloha Snacks located on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach. Aloha Snacks has become a fixture to the locals and the visitors who find their way to its location.
Jesse is one of America’s Best Chefs - BEST CHEFS AMERICA is the ultimate guide to chefs. “Our compendium of the most talented and respected chefs in the United States is compiled using a comprehensive process of interviewing chefs across the country. Chefs are nominated for participation by fellow chefs, other culinary professionals, and food enthusiasts. To date, Best Chefs America has conducted more than 5,000 one-on-one chef interviews to gather data. The chefs we interview tell us those whom they consider to be the best. Best Chefs are those who lead and inspire their kitchens to consistently create excellent food, strive to innovate with their dishes and ingredients, and are respected by their peers. No chef can pay to be included in the guides. The only names you will find inside are chefs who are considered by their peers to be the most talented cooks today.”
Jesse was a boarding student at Christchurch for two years. During his time, he was involved in soccer, weightlifting, tennis, sailing, and chorus. He was SGA treasurer and the newspaper editor. Jesse could often be found on either of the academic achievement lists throughout his time at Christchurch. Jesse will admit he had much more fun than the average student, finding time in rockpile or detention hall. His senior quote even mentions food and the school’s food service and his happiness about food. After Christchurch, Jesse went on and graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Hospitality Management degree.
Jesse is married to his wife Ashley, and they have two boys, August and Judson. Jesse invites any and all to come and visit him at Aloha Snacks at any time and please when you come in let him know you are there. He will not be out front but will be in the back, preparing your meal.
Whathappens when you get three Seahorses together in a business deal? Well, in December of 2021, Capital Square Development purchased property in Raleigh, NC. In the beginning the projected cost was estimated to be approximately 130 million dollars. Throughout the last six months, the project has attracted investors along with adding retail spaces.
Three Seahorses are making this happen: Zach Means ’97, Adam Stifel ’98, and John Cheshire ’99. Zach, who is an industry leader in commercial real estate property, introduced Adam to the property, which is steps away from Raleigh’s downtown. The idea from Adam and Capital Square, of Richmond, VA was to use this flourishing Warehouse District of Raleigh’s to create a project that will develop luxury, mixed-use multifamily, and retail space. The company said the project will be a 20-story structure with 297 residential units and 437 parking spaces. The proposed project will contain 201 1-bedroom units, 92 2-bedroom units, and three 3-bedroom units, according to the plans filed with the City of Raleigh. The project broke ground on June 9, 2022, and guess who was involved? Our own John Cheshire LEED AP, who is with W.M. Jordan Construction Company, will be the general contractor for the project. Keep an eye out for these three alumni as they are truly making a difference not only in their community but in many others.

Christchurch saw an impressive surge of philanthropic support for several key initiatives during the lead up to its second century and transition of leadership to new Head of School, Billy Coyle. These donors have helped to further secure the school’s position of strength in an increasingly competitive marketplace of private day and boarding education. Thanks to these Seahorse donors, the following achievements were made possible:
Over the course of Christchurch’s history, St. Peter’s Chapel has been the heartbeat of the campus. As an alum from the Class of ’79 said, “It’s been a place of solace I can go to any time to clear my mind and reflect or praise. I hope we can preserve it for future generations of Seahorses.” Nearing its 100th birthday, it became clear to the school that an initiative encompassing both renovation and restoration was needed to “preserve” the historic chapel for future Seahorse generations.
Following lead gifts from THE WILLIAM H. – JOHN G. – EMMA SCOTT FOUNDATION, current parents DAVID & LAURA THAYER ’24, THE RICHARDSON FAMILY, AND THE CLASS OF ’71, the proverbial floodgates burst open with massive support coming in from across all classes and decades.
The work, now completed, ensures that this beloved, historic, and iconic chapel will continue to serve as a campus landmark, a place of worship, a beloved gathering place, and indeed, the heartbeat of Christchurch School for our second century.
A strong endowment provides a solid financial foundation in both smooth and turbulent times. It also lessens the school’s dependency on tuition as the primary source of income while providing a gift that literally gives forever.
As the school neared its second century, the reality of the Covid-19 pandemic set in across the world. Knowing that a healthy endowment would help ensure the school’s ability to stay the course in this time of crisis, three lead donors helped Christchurch raise over $3M for its endowment!
We are forever grateful to the following lead donors, as well as the many other donors, who helped us achieve this impressive endowment goal.
E.C. “BUDDY” WILTON JR. ’70. An alum and current governor, Buddy Wilton is both one of the longest and one of the largest philanthropic supporters of Christchurch School. Recognizing the critical need to grow the school’s endowment in this time of crisis, and seeing that time was of the essence, Buddy gave the first $1M lead gift for this initiative.
ROGERS “ROGIE” W. THORP. Rogie, as her friends call her, has been a passionate advocate and supporter of universal access to quality education her whole life. With a single $1M gift, Rogie established Christchurch School’s largest general need-based scholarship endowment, named the “Thorp-Williams- Hetzer Scholarship.” Rogie’s daughter, Kathe Hetzer, is the Vice-Chair of the school’s Board of Governors. Kathe and her husband Scott are also proud parents of an alum, their son Scott Jr. ’13.
NEVAN D. AND LYNNE TATUM LITTLE, WALTER TATUM Nevan and Lynne are proud parents of an alum, their son Carter ’14. Lynne also serves as Chair of the school’s Board of Governors. While serving on the board, Lynne’s late father, Walter Tatum, became very knowledgeable and passionate about Christchurch’s mission, and he quickly became a major supporter of the school and, in particular, the waterfront. Before he passed away, Walter gave a major gift to the waterfront, with Nevan and Lynne joining this gift. They also created both the Tatum-Little Scholarship Fund, a merit scholarship for a returning student who is a sailor, and the Waterfront Forever Endowment, which is meant to help offset necessary expenses to steward the waterfront.
As the school approached its centennial, many donors stepped forward to qualify themselves as new members of The Christchurch School Society. The Society is comprised of donors who have communicated they have made a planned gift for the school. Thanks to these donors, Christchurch raised over $800,000 in bequests! These planned gifts are crucial for the school’s long-term strategic planning.
Would you like to become a member of The Christchurch School Society?
Recognizing that quality housing is essential for attracting and retaining the top talent in education, Christchurch initiated and completed work on its first new faculty housing in decades. Completed in 2018 and located across the street from Nunn Soccer Field, the new faculty village is comprised of four single-family, well-appointed houses which share a common court.
Seeing the very real and tangible need for high-quality faculty housing, BUDDY WILTON ’70 provided the lead gift to initiate this critical capital project. To recognize Buddy’s 45+ (37 consecutive) years of supporting Christchurch at the highest giving level, the new faculty village is now named Wilton Court
Additionally, the school is deeply grateful to the many other donors who helped to complete this project. As a result of their giving, three of the four houses in Wilton Court have been named as follows: The Darren & Lois Willcox House, The Wilma Jordan-Green House, and The Dan Nolan House. Please note that there is one more house available to name!
In celebrating our 100th year, YOU, our donors, supported Christchurch Truly, the outpouring of love and support was at times overwhelming. Christchurch is deeply grateful to all of the donors who helped us honor our first 100 years.
The navy blue states indicate where our donors are located
Our donors are perfect ambassadors for prospective students who want to be included in the Christchurch experience. Spread the word! Tell your friends, family, and colleagues about Christchurch School! Go Church!
The Alumni Class Spirit Award is strictly based on the percentage of class members who give to Annual Giving. The class with the highest percentage of giving class members wins!
Chistchurch School is proud of its roll call of alumni, faculty, and staff who have courageously served in the American Armed Forces. In the course of more than a century, Seahorses have served honorably and with distinction in five of the six armed forces: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy, as well as the two non-military uniformed services - the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps. A memorial honoring Seahorses for their service sits at the base of the flagpole on Bell Tower Hill.
In addition to the Christchurch Bell Tower Fund, endowed scholarships help make a Christchurch education affordable for our students. Through your generous support, more than twenty three endowed scholarships have been created to date. When creating a new scholarship, we will work with you to establish a name and criteria that is most meaningful to you. To find out how you can create an endowed scholarship, or contribute to one that already exists, please contact:

While at Christchurch she participated in; 4 years on the field hockey team, 4 years on the tennis team, 3 years on the volleyball team, 3 years on the yearbook committee and 2 years as Editor of the yearbook, 1 year drama club, 2 years proctor, and was always found on academic achievement lists. In her senior year she won both the Touchstone Jones Journalism Prize and the Mathematics Prize. Cherbury went on from Christchurch to graduate from the University of Virginia and a few years later graduated from the Darden School of Business with an MBA. Today, Cherbury and her husband Timothy reside in Vienna, VA with their dog Sandy. She is currently the Vice President and Corporate Treasurer at TEGNA Inc. and had prior roles at Smithfield Foods, Yum! Brands and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Cherbury is now in her second term on the Christchurch School Board of Governors. Here is what Cherbury said on why she has decided to create a Planned
Gift for Christchurch School:
Simply put, I love Christchurch School. Christchurch was more than a school to me; it was an extension of my family and the teachers and experience as a student helped set my course to become the person I am today. Having grown up in the Tidewater region surrounding the school, I was very familiar with the school and its integration with the community and presence as the little school on the river. For over 100 years, Christchurch has been a model in preparatory education for students, teachers, and families. Christchurch fosters a community and environment for developing creativity, critical thinking skills and resilience through hands-on experiential learning and an integrated teaching model.
I have been consistently and purposely involved with the school as an alumni advocate, past member of alumni council, and most recently a Foundation Board Trustee in my small attempt to give back to the school, teachers, and community that have given so much to me in my formative years. And I am so lucky I continue to experience the full warmth, support, and success of the community to this day.
I am a perpetual giver to The Bell Tower Fund and most recently have designated Christchurch School as a beneficiary in my planned giving. It has never been more important to ensure the stability and sustainability of Christchurch School for the next 100 years. These gifts to the Annual Fund and long-term planning are essential to sustaining the quality, depth, and diversity of programs that our students experience every day. As you can imagine, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of providing an exceptional education and Christchurch relies on tuition income as well as gifts to balance the budget each year and plan for the future for other budding seahorses to set their course at the river.
I encourage you all to think about what the Christchurch School experience, education, and community has meant to you and your family and consider them in your gifts today.
The Christchurch School Society is composed of donors who have indicated their intentions to make planned gifts to Christchurch School. Qualifying gifts may include bequests, retirement plan assets, charitable remainder trusts, lead trusts, and life insurance.
Gifts may be designated for specific purposes such as endowments for scholarships, faculty compensation or enrichment, buildings and grounds, and programs, or they may be undesignated to give Christchurch the flexibility to meet unforeseen needs.
Christchurch is pleased to honor these donors who provide for the Christchurch School of tomorrow.
If you have not yet included the Christchurch School Foundation in your estate plans and would like to explore the best options for you and your family, we would be happy to assist you on a confidential basis and without any obligation.

Twenty years ago, Mollie Brum eld applied for a learning specialist position at Christchurch. Following her interview, she walked to the end of the dock and inhaled the saltiness of the Rappahannock. “ at was it. e river wrapped its arms around me, and I knew this was home.”
Brum eld is the heart and soul of the community. Originally from Maryland, she played eld hockey and lacrosse at Dickinson College, she lived at the Center for Sustainable Living and graduated with a degree in Environmental Science. Mollie then worked as an environmental educator for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Shortly after arriving at CCS, she was part of the faculty and administrative team that designed the Great Journeys curriculum as part of the school’s rede nition of its mission.
When describing her work with students, Mollie talks about “sitting beside them,” speaking volumes about her teaching style. In the Learning Skills Program (LSP) Suite, sitting beside hundreds of students over two decades, she impacts lives one at a time. For the rst fteen years, Brum eld worked with LSP’s founder, Gracejean Hennigar. “It was a joy for me to work with Mollie as she is intelligent, intuitive, and extremely knowledgeable about systems related to science and the environment,” says Hennigar. “As a teacher and chaperone for immersion trips and international travel, Mollie is patient and adaptable ... she is an invaluable asset to Christchurch School.”
Mollie leads the River & Outdoor program, sharing with students her joy in shing, paddling, and making camp res. She advocates for the school’s beloved Immersion Trips and Global Education Program and is the advisory program coordinator.
For twenty years, Mollie has spent evenings providing support in Structured Study Hall. She brings her endless patience and voice of wisdom to duty on Scott Dorm, the boys’ residence hall. She is a weekend duty warrior, encouraging kids to leave phones and games behind in exchange for the fresh air of outdoor adventures. A generation of Seahorses has made pretzels on Sunday afternoons with Ms. Brum eld.
Mollie brainstorms speech ideas with seniors. She writes travel blogs with students, ngers frozen as the sun peeks over the mountains in Agora, India. She coaxes students over and through the granite gauntlet atop Old Rag Mountain and shucks oysters with boys in the Scott Common Room.
Her favorite moments at CCS include lingering over tea and cookies after Community Lunch to re ect with advisees on how they have grown and to explore what they are beginning to care about in the world. Another favorite moment is rounding the corner of Bishop Brown each morning to take in the river view. “It reminds me of the dynamic stability we strive for daily and over the course of years. Change is the only constant.” But Mollie is a constant, too. Much like the river winking around the corner, her presence at CCS is abiding and comforting, with extraordinary patience and encouragement to spare.
e connections that Mollie makes transcend time and place. She champions the underdogs, those who must work harder and longer. “It’s not always fair, and the rewards may not be immediate, but eventually, trusting in yourself, your e ort, and the people who care about you will be the foundation needed in all kinds of situations.”
Mollie is that foundation for hundreds of alumni, including Jaylyn Kreimes ’18. “When times got hard, Ms. Brum eld gave me only one option: keep pushing. She took time out of each day to make sure I wasn’t taking steps backward. So I couldn’t give up. She makes sure everyone feels loved and has a purpose, even when they don’t yet see it in themselves.”
Mollie has a wish for all of her students. “I hope that somewhere along each student’s journey in life, they can re ect on how they felt at Christchurch and recognize that they were loved and encour- aged … and that they can o er that same kind of love and com- passion to the people they encounter in their lives.” Jaylyn embodies this wish. He nished college last spring with a degree in secondary ed and is completing his teaching certi cation. He hopes to “give that same level of love and trust that I got from Ms. Brum eld to the next generation.”
Brum eld draws inspiration from her high school lacrosse coach and Chesapeake Bay Studies teacher. “John Hughes was the kind of coach who called his team captains after each game to debrief and the teacher who took students canoeing on the weekends. Because of him, I was able to travel to the sub-tropical streams of Central FL, the Adirondacks, Costa Rica, and Belize.”
An avid gardener, Mollie likes to travel, sh, and cook. She begins every day with yoga and enjoys creative projects with her mother. She has three children and loves to watch them swim and play soccer, baseball, and lacrosse. e oldest, Abigail and Owen, attend CCS.
Mollie appreciates being part of this global community nestled in Tidewater, VA. e opportunity to explore the world with students from around the globe is unique. “ e friends we have made on the Global Education trips to India and Senegal are a gift.”
Her philosophy about working with students is to “keep doing the little things patiently.” Eventually, the big picture comes into focus. “ ere is potential in everyone. You just never know when you will discover it!” She loves to see students exceed expectations and become con dent, independent learners.
“Working at Christchurch takes grit, but the rewards are rich and meaningful. Keep the students’ experience at the heart of what you do, and you will experience growth and success as well,” she advises collegues with her trademark patience and wisdom.
When asked what keeps her at Christchurch, Mollie Brum eld says, “ e cumulative impact of patience and trust in my students, my colleagues, and the mission lls my heart and keeps me here.” at, and of course, the river.
“
e river wrapped its arms around me and I knew this was home.”
Growing up in New Jersey and suburban Philadelphia, Matt Schaefer and his siblings were active. Sports were part of daily life - basketball, baseball, golf, roller hockey. At the age of 5, Matt discovered soccer. He was the only one in his family to play it. He loved it. His father thought it was boring. By the spring of 9th grade, soccer was his passion. He was always playing, even when there was no game. He was constantly dribbling, “me vs. myself,” and kicking against walls. “I always loved soccer.”
The love continued at Penn State, where Matt was a Biological/Biosystems Engineering major driven to be involved with the game of soccer in every possible way. After being cut from the men’s team in his senior year, he started the Penn State travel club (years later, he would return to this team as a coach, taking it to a national championship victory). He was always searching for more soccer, even playing a game at a maximum security prison. “I just had to play.” He also started the club team at VA Tech while earning his Master’s Degree in Engineering.
Two decades later, “the beautiful game” is still a passion. Matt has spent those years as a teacher, dorm parent, and two-season soccer coach (fall boys and spring girls) at Christchurch. He is the classic boarding school triple threat, personified.
Coach knows the soccer game inside out. He has coached boys and girls at all levels: U14, high school, and college. He has refereed the game. He has taken our Seahorses to state championships, with a title win for the boys in 2014. He has also built programs from the ground up, including the girls’ soccer program at Christchurch in 2007.
In the classroom, Matt knows the game inside out as well. A published USDA researcher and scientist, he never fails to inspire curiosity in his math students. Whether working on problems at the board, sharing RadioLab segments, or giving students real-world problems to solve, Schaefer keeps things fresh and lively. He has a gift for reaching even the most reluctant math student. He is well-known for his excitement when a student challenges him on a problem.
Matt got the rst inkling that he might like teaching when he did some math tutoring in high school. He was surprised to nd it so satisfying. en, as a teaching assistant at Penn State, he lled in for a professor and “got a little buzz” from it.
“Mr. Schaefer was my favorite teacher,” says Steven Stilianos ’18, a Sustainable Development/Engineering graduate student at e University of Iowa. “He makes his courses and math problems applicable to the real world, which gives you a di erent type of successful feeling when you complete a problem. He wants to challenge you with di cult problems but will help you learn and understand every step of the way. One time, he came into the classroom an hour and a half before school started to help me with a homework problem that I could not gure out.”
Libbie Randolph ’10, the Program Coordinator at Women Win, remembers, “From
the moment I met him on my campus tour … Coach Schaefer played a pivotal role in my Christchurch experience. During the highs (soccer play-o s, advisory group outings) and the lows (knee injuries, college rejections) Coach was always there. I will be forever grateful for his unwavering support and guidance on and o the soccer eld.”
Did we mention that Schaefer is also a philosopher? He is appreciated, by students and colleagues, for his love of engaging in complex discussions about the meaning of life. “I love going down a rabbit hole,” he says with a gleam in his eye. He is also a great cook and loves to whip up a dish or two for players and students. His sausage bites are the stu of CCS legend.
Schaefer’s top priority is always to impart the skills of happiness. Not the happiness of immediate grati cation – but rather the possibility of true, lifetime happiness. He considers it his ultimate responsibility to help students genuinely know themselves and have clarity in answering life’s most fundamental questions: Who am I? Why do things happen? What is sacred? Where am I going? Where have I been? In short, Schaefer believes that students can better navigate a seemingly hostile world when they have a true sense of self-identity. But the world is not hostile, he quickly points out. It is simply full of people trying to gure out how they t into the puzzle.
Matt’s favorite time of day is early morning when everything is still possible. “You start with something simple like moving soccer laundry. You walk into Yarbrough Gym with its silly smells, chuck some uniforms into the wash, and hang up some jerseys. You’re feeling grateful for all of it and excited about all the possibilities a day of classes and practice could have.”
Evenings often nd Schaefer doing dorm duty, usually surrounded by students. He patiently helps them with math problems amid a sea of papers, pencils, and calculators in the Common Room.
Schaefer feels most connected to students with whom he has the opportunity to interact in the classroom, on the playing eld, AND on the dorm: classic boarding school opportunities for deep connections. “ at’s the alchemy of boarding school,” Schaefer says happily.
The return of three full seasons of sports and co-curriculars following the pandemic brought great joy to our Seahorses. For some teams, getting back up to speed was difficult, and the absence of scaffolding from the previous year was deeply felt. Other teams soared. Regardless, all teams, athletes, and performers showed the “undaunted courage and true sportsmanship” (CCS athletics, The Virginia Churchman, 1921) for which Seahorses have been known for 100 years.
Coach Matt Schaefer and the boys soccer team made their way to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division II state quarterfinals, in which they lost 1-0 to the #1-ranked North Cross School. There are 56 schools in the VISAA Boys Soccer Division II.
Despite a difficult season due to low numbers, the football team was honored with the Touchdown Club of Virginia’s Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations to the following players who earned VISAA Division II All-State Second Team Honors: Charlie Hatcher ’23 RB; Gabe Sheffield ’23 OL; Keegan Slider ’24 DL; and Evan Randall ’22 DB.
The annual winter production returned in all its glory with an original show, The Rappahannock Follies. Not to be outdone by lingering covid safety precautions for this live show, Visual and Performing Arts Chair Mark Parsons cleverly designed a Vaudevillian-type revue so that the number of students on stage at any one time was limited. The show featured singing, dancing, comedy, magic, and delighted all.
Coach Dave Cola and the swim team had a robust season, with the boys winning the Division II State Runner-Up title at the VISAA State Swimming and Diving Championship. Congratulations to Jackson Kiland ’22, who earned All-State recognition.
Christchurch Legacy Pierce Lambert ’22 (Robin Fleet ’94) thrilled us with his golf talents and skills for four years (minus the canceled 2020 season). This year, he finished second in a flight of 40 players in the VISAA Division II state championship. Pierce will play golf at Hampden-Sydney College.
In their first season in VISAA Division I in nearly a decade, Head Coach John Dehm, Coach Evan Pausic ’17, and the lacrosse team gave us a season to remember, ultimately making an appearance in the state playoffs. Congratulations to the following players who earned VISAA Division II Second Team All-State Honors: Jaxon Gill ’22; and Luke Robinson ’24.
The sailing team was undefeated in the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA) spring season. The team qualified to
represent the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association (MASSA) at the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) Baker Team Race National Championship Regatta in Seabrook, TX and the 2022 ISSA Mallory Doublehanded National Championship in San Diego, CA. The Seahorses finished 5th in the Baker and 10th in the Mallory. Coach Kieran O’Connell and the sailors were proud to host the Mallory Qualifier, bringing 18 Mid-Atlantic teams and many admirers to our waterfront to use the Clyde V. Kelly IV Sailing Pavilion and our Jack Dozier ’65 Sailing Fleet. Congratulations to sailors who received post-season All-VISA honors: Emilie Janzen ’22 Crew (fall, spring)/Girls Crew (fall, spring); Marina Dryer ’22 Girls Crew (fall, spring); Aidan Iaconis ’22 Crew (fall); Carlos Bermudez de Castro ’22 Skipper (fall); Jaxon Parker Searcy ’22 Crew (fall); Maison Koepke ’23 Skipper (spring); Peyton McDonald ’23 Crew (fall, spring); PJ Rodrigues Crew (fall); JJ Klempen ’23 Skipper (fall); Maddie Janzen ’25 Girls Skipper (fall, spring).
Coach Matt Schaefer and the girls soccer team gave fans a thrilling season, booting their way to the Virginia
Association (VISAA) Division II State Championship at Glover Park in Richmond.
finished its regular season ranked #2 in the state, with a final record of 12-3-3. The Seahorses tied Highland School 0-0 in the championship, stayed 0-0 through overtime,
then lost 3-2 in penalty kicks, making them the State Champion Runner-Up.
Division II All-State First Team Honors: Taylor Berry ’22; Tess Bennett ’23; Cecelia Jablonski ’25.
The Bell Tower Fund is Christchurch School’s top fundraising priority. Each year we ask our past and present families, alumni, past and present faculty/staff, and friends to make a tax-deductible gift that supports the current operations of the school. Gifts immediately benefit our community by providing critical funding for academics, arts, athletics, financial assistance, faculty professional development, technology, innovation, and so much more. Gifts received from our entire community help make Christchurch School’s educational experience extraordinary.
We rely on the generosity of the entire Seahorse Family to help bridge the gap between the cost of tuition and the cost of our exceptional educational experience. Net tuition and fees only cover part of the true cost of a Christchurch educational experience. For this reason, The Bell Tower Fund is vital to making up the difference.
All gifts are greatly appreciated and collectively make a tremendous impact. Gifts to The Bell Tower Fund range from $25 to over $50,000. Please make a meaningful contribution at whatever amount you are comfortable.
Foundations, leadership and major donors, volunteers, prospective families, and faculty all take notice of the giving % participation from all constituents in The Bell Tower Fund. Our participation % for giving is a sign of how invested the Christchurch community is in our school’s success, and as such it is often a factor when deciding on a major gift, a grant, or volunteering time and energy.
In the above ways, and so many more, all Seahorses are connected. And so, each gift has a potent positive ripple effect that combined will carry us forward on a rising tide of success into Christchurch School’s second century.
