Dear Reader I just love springtime! It’s still pretty cold as I write this, but the sun is shining and there isn’t a cloud in the sky.

I’ve already seen a few bulbs pushing out from the ground Cheryl letting us know that spring really is just around the corner.

It’s such a pretty time of year when you can watch nature come to life with many colours brightening up our town. We’re very fortunate to have such wonderful surroundings here in Christchurch and it looks even lovelier with the dawning of this new season.

Thank you so much to everyone for all their words of kindness with regard to how much you’re all loving the new look magazine and that you’re enjoying reading it, especially with even more regular local content. The amount of letters and emails I’ve received is astonishing and I truly am touched. It is a lot of hard work, not just myself, but all our regular contributors that take a lot of time out of their daily lives to write for us and it’s great to know it’s all worth it. - Finding Fitzmaurice

The Christchurch Eye recently received a letter from reader Mike Marsh, who was asking for photographs or information related to his home in Fitzmaurice Road in Jumpers. (See Reader’s Letter in the January issue.)

The area now known as Jumpers fell just outside the Old Borough of Christchurch in the Manor of Hurn.

For centuries it was mainly an expanse of wild heath and land serving a small settlement at Grove that had been in existence since at least the early 12th century.

The first major development in the area seems to have been Jumpers House on the bank of the River Stour a short distance upstream from Iford Bridge. This grand residence is generally dated to the mid 18th century, but photographic evidence suggests that it may have had medieval origins. Its former Lodge House survives as part of the Crooked Beams Restaurant, and Stourvale Avenue follows the route of its driveway. Jumpers House itself stood between present-day Cedar Avenue and Chestnut Avenue. Do the back gardens in this area ever reveal evidence of this substantial building, which was demolished in 1955?

The origin of the name Jumpers is uncertain. One theory is that it is derived from the juniper trees that grew in the grounds of Jumpers House. However, it is recorded that a ‘William Ballye, alias Jumper’ was a Christchurch landowner in the late 16th century, though it is not known if he or his family were ever associated with the Jumpers area.

Another major development came in 1858, when Christchurch Cemetery was opened in Jumpers Road to cater for the town’s growing population. This land north of Jumpers Common had been a field called Grove Corner belonging to Grove Farm, and was leased to the Burial Board by Lord Malmesbury of Hurn Court. Until that time Jumpers Road had been little more than a cart track leading across ploughed fields!

Edged on the south by Barrack Road, Jumpers Common once covered over 30 acres between Jumpers Road and Grove Lane (today The Grove). The last vestige of open land in this area is now the 3½ acre public recreation ground still known as Jumpers Common, which was granted legal protection as a Queen Elizabeth II Field in Trust in 2012. However, the 1844 Tithe Map shows that this piece of land had actually been part of a field called Green Close, which also belonged to Grove Farm.

Road and house-building on Jumpers Common began towards the end of the 19th century. In the 1890s a Sunday school was started in the Fitzmaurice Road home of laundress Elizabeth Whiteley. This venture had the 6 • Christchurch Highcliffe EyeEye • March • March 2015 2015

approval and support of the Vicar of Christchurch, the Rev Thomas Bush, and other local notables. A few years later permission was given for the Portfield and Jumpers Mission Church to be erected on the north side of Fitzmaurice Road on the site of an old gravel pit.

(This is where Mike Marsh’s home was later built.)

In 1909, plans for a new church were approved and a secondhand corrugated iron building was brought in pieces from Brighton by railway. This ‘tin church’ was erected on the south side of Fitzmaurice Road, on the corner with Jumpers Road (Photo). However, it was soon clear that a larger building was required and an appeal for funds was launched. The foundation stone for the present St George’s Church was laid in 1927.

Why is Fitzmaurice Road so-named? Shortly before his death in 1824, Benjamin Bullock, the owner of Jumpers House, bequeathed the house and land to his adopted infant daughter, Jane West. During her long life Jane was twice married and widowed - both times to doctors!

Jane resided with her first husband, John Gardner, in Malvern Link, Worcestershire, but after his death in 1846 she returned to Jumpers House. Over 25 years later she remarried, her second husband being James Fitzmaurice, an Irish-born doctor living in Bridge House, Castle Street.

They subsequently resided in Stourville, a sizeable villa with extensive grounds situated on Barrack Road where The Stourvale public house and The Hurdles housing estate are today sited.

James Fitzmaurice died in 1878 and the twice-widowed Jane continued to live in Christchurch until her own death in 1904. Her two husbands were commemorated in the naming of Gardner Road and Fitzmaurice Road.

Then there is the announcement that the next door empty eight acre Air Traffic Control Centre site (NATS) has finally secured a new, slightly surprising, tenant. Parkfield School, a free school currently in temporary accommodation in the centre of Bournemouth, has snatched up the site as a new permanent base for its school. The large site with extensive parking is seen as ideal and they have an ambitious plan for the school to be running there from September 2015.

On the existing aviation park, a new £11 million advanced manufacturing development for AIM aviation was announced just a few months ago.

In addition, in January, a planning application was submitted for a £60 million redevelopment of Aviation Business Park West. If granted it will add 30,000 sq m of mixed commercial and industrial space over the coming years, with great prospect for new jobs.

All this raises concerns about traffic access to an area that already has problems, so the announcement of significant investment for road improvements is certainly important. A complete rebuild of the A338 Spur Road is to start in September and essential improvements to the crucial Hurn roundabout are also planned.

It may be too much to hope that everything will come together in a timely fashion, but it is clear the airport and business park are on track for major growth.

TUCKTONIA: THE ROAD TO TUCKTONIA Written by Alexander McKinstry

The Tuckton Golf Course offered a cordial welcome to anyone visiting Christchurch in the 1960s.

As related in our previous issue, its proprietor throughout that decade was Harry Stiller, who had arrived in Bournemouth in 1958 and who spent his first few months in the district selling washing machines on commission. On acquiring the Tuckton course, one of his first moves was to convert the site café into the Golfers’ Arms, which acquired a seasonal drinks licence in 1961 - making Harry, at twenty-three, one of the youngest licensees in the country. This was extended to an all-year-round licence in 1963, though the course itself remained closed between October and April, for the simple reason that it flooded every winter.

The success of the site arose from its pleasant location, the well-tended fairways – when not in flood – and crucially, the fact that the Golfers’ operated as a free house, with sixteen beers on draught at any time.

‘It used to be our boast,’ says Harry today, ‘that if you were a holidaymaker, we would have your beer. I used to have Tetley’s, Newcastle Brown, Ushers, Flower’s Bitter, Watney’s, Charrington, Double Diamond – I had every booze you could think of.’ In later years, when the Golfers’ was leased to a brewery, the takings plummeted, partly because the brewery in question slung out all the beers: ‘I think they had one guest ale.’

That lay in the future however, and in Harry’s time the site was further enlivened by the addition of a discothèque, Barbarella’s, which opened as an extension to the Golfers’ in 1965. This only ran for two years, however, partly because mini-skirted hedonists kept infiltrating the Golfers’ next-door.

‘The police had a few words in my shell-like ear about all the underage drinking that was going on,’ remembers Harry, ‘so in the end, the pub was getting busier and busier and I thought, you know what, I’ve 16 • Christchurch Eye • March 2015

had the best out of this discothèque, it’s been a very good thing, but I need the space for the pub and I don’t need all this aggro.’ Barbarella’s closed, and Harry used the space to create a new bar – The Raceway Bar – distinguished by the single-seater racing car built into the outside wall.

The Raceway was of course a nod to Harry’s Formula 3 career, which was then taking up most of his time.

Consequently the late Ken James, who had started as a cellar-man at the Golfers’ in 1964, was appointed site manager and became Harry’s right-hand man (‘an absolutely super bloke’) in the years that followed. A turning-point came at the end of the decade, when Harry retired from Formula 3 after two successive accidents test-driving tyres. From then on, the Stour Road site became the focus of his energies.

The Golfers’ was assigned to Watney’s, on a 99-year lease, to help fund new attractions: these included a safari ride, an amusements palace, a 35-ft giant slide or ‘Astra Glide’, and a £24,000 go-kart track – the feature that grabbed most attention when the site reopened as the Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park, on 28 May 1972.

The track was run like ‘a mini-Indianapolis’, as the Evening Echo observed on 10 June 1972. Drivers started in unison, and after nineteen laps a mechanic in overalls would be on hand to signal ‘Last lap’ to the leading driver, who would then perform a victory lap before coming to rest in the nearby pits. The opening day was marked by members of the Bristol and Bath Go-Kart Racing Club bringing their race-tuned vehicles to the site, capable of 80 mph on larger circuits; JeanPierre Beltoise, the Monaco Grand Prix winner, had also been slated to attend, but was defeated by a sixmile traffic jam on the M3. The site’s own karts were powered by 170-cc Honda engines, allowing speeds of up to 23 mph, as the author can attest from his own youth: there was no age limit, so long as the driver’s foot was capable of touching the brake-pedal.

The Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park was a great success from the outset. Police were called on opening day when visitors began parking their cars on Tuckton Bridge, and most of the site’s 425 parking spaces were filled throughout the summers that ensued. A further development was also gestating around this

time. ‘I remember thinking,’ says Harry, ‘the Stour Road site had worked out well, and was self-funding, but I was still seeking a special ingredient to really catapult the site to attention.’ It happened that Harry was good friends with the Bournemouth businessman John Yates, who opened the Maison Royale nightclub in Glen Fern Road in 1971; the two of them used to meet for weekly brainstorming sessions. It was John who suggested a trip to the Madurodam model landscape in The Hague, replete with 1:25 models of windmills, tulip fields and various Dutch landmarks.

Intrigued, Harry paid a visit – ‘and the moment I set foot there,’ he says, ‘I knew this was exactly the sort of thing I wanted to bring to Christchurch.’

And so the Tucktonia model landscape was born.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 2 - The Saxons are coming

The Anglo-Saxons did a lot for us (more than the Romans you might say). They gave us a language (English) and our only monarch meriting the epithet ‘the Great’ (Alfred of course). We became a nation and a force to be reckoned with. Yet the Anglo-Saxons were not indigenous to these isles. They came from today’s Denmark and Germany from the 5th century AD; in a sense we are all immigrants here.

In Christchurch, the oldest human evidence on the ground dates from these Angles and Saxons. The town became one of Alfred’s fortified burghs (hence borough) in the late 9th century, defensible against Viking longships fancying pillage, plunder and locals on the points of their swords. Aided by its rivers, Christchurch (or ‘Tweoxneam’ as it was known), was easily defended by placing a ‘wall’ across the neck of the promontory.

A plaque in Wick Lane records these facts and confirms that some remains of banks and ditches were excavated nearby. Two sites were unearthed, exposing alignment and material (earth, rubble and turf) with an ironstone front, outside ditch and lost timber/wattle palisade and fighting platform up top. Ironstone would have come from Hengistbury Head, scavenging of the site, which would continue through to Victorian times. As for where you can see actual walls, this may be a moot point, as whilst there are some overgrown candidates, whether these are original or reconstructed is not entirely clear.

The scale of the walls and the area they enclosed can be deduced from the ‘Burghal Hidage’, an Anglo-

Saxon document of the early 10th century, which lists fortified burghs and reveals the men required to defend their walls, a ‘hide’ being the land needed to support one peasant and his family, possibly around Stephen 40 acres in these parts, each hide supplying one man for defence. Christchurch needed 470 men, Winchester 2400 and Southampton just 150.

How times change. The best preserved of these fortified towns is Wareham, with massive earthen banks and planned street layout.

A burgh wasn’t just for defending, it was for living in.

Town Quay has Place Mill, dating to Saxon times and mentioned in that Norman inventory of all things, the Domesday Book. There has been much alteration over the eras, but a plaque records its antiquity and the fact it continued to serve its purpose as a mill right up to 1908.

Place Mill, named for its position at a ‘place’ where rivers meet (the only freshwater tide-mill linking two main rivers), was not our only Saxon mill. There were others, including Knapp Mill and Town Mill, which stood somewhere near to today’s ducking stool.

On the Water

This time of year local boat owners and watersports enthusiasts are starting to think about getting afloat again.

Although Christchurch has two rivers and a large harbour there is limited public access to the John water. The slipway near to Christchurch Quay is the most popular with boat owners and kayakers, the ramp is not too steep and there is plenty of space to park cars and trailers alongside the River Stour. There is a public slipway next to the bridges over the River Avon but it can be challenging when the river is flowing fast.

Mudeford Quay has parking for hundreds of cars and on a summers day many of them are there to launch using the slipway near to the RNLI Lifeboat station. This launch site is popular for personal watercraft users, dinghy sailors and power boaters. Windsurfers will launch here, but if they are sailing in Christchurch Bay they usually get afloat at Avon Beach or further east at Steamer Point.

If you want to keep your boat on a mooring in the Harbour or rivers contact Christchurch Council and the local water company for availability before the season starts. There are small boat yards on the Stour below Tuckton Bridge where you can moor alongside the bank.

The Avon has larger boat yards with Elkins Boatyard, Rossiter Yachts and RIBS Marine offering everything from marinas to boat yard facilities with workshops.

The Christchurch Harbour buoyage should be back in by early April ready for the Easter holidays. Before you go afloat for any water activity it is a good idea to check that buoyancy aids, lifejackets and safety equipment are all in good condition.

Christchurch Rotary In last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s article I advised readers that I would give a greater insight into what we do and how we work.

I have started off with â&#x20AC;&#x153;ShelterBoxâ&#x20AC;? a Rotary Project Partner, which Paul helped with the Haiti crisis that shocked the world over 5 years ago. CHERRIES STAR PUGH JOINS CARE SOUTH RESIDENTS FOR A KICK ABOUT Residents at Care South’s Queensmead care home received some top tips from AFC Bournemouth’s Marc Pugh on a special visit.

The Cherries winger, who is ambassador for the partnership between Care South and the club, joined in with a game of chair football as he met residents in Christchurch.

“It was clear to see that the residents were thrilled to meet Marc,” head of the Community Sports Trust Steve Cuss said. “He was happy to spend time chatting to them and showing them a few tricks. We couldn’t ask for a better ambassador for this partnership.”

Susan Willoughby, Chief Executive at Care South, added: “It’s marvellous that such a high profile local footballer is the ambassador for this partnership! We were really impressed with the way that Marc, Steve Cuss and the trainee coaches that helped out with the activity took the time to talk to each of our residents and engage them in the activity.

Christchurch Citizens Association Well here we are in March, a month that can be very unsettled weather wise but it also promises that spring is just around the corner and the clocks change to give us longer days.

The down side is having to start mowing the lawn again. With snowdrops, daffodils tulips etc., dreary gardens are once more transformed into colourful landscapes.

On the serious side of life the CCA are backing the effort to retain the Electric Museum, which was felt to be a cultural asset to the town, and we will encourage the council to hold a vote of support at the next council meeting.

Druitt Hall update: Donations have been given towards a new kitchen and we hope to have this completed and ready to be open for the May Food Festival. There is still work to be done so any contributions of money, plants or time for painting or gardening will be greatly appreciated.

The sales literature for the Corn Factor site is showing a large green space on the Druitt Garden boundry where many mature trees exist, in view of recent history we will do all in our power to maintain the garden in the Druitt families intended form.

On Monday April 20th in Druitt Hall at 7pm we will be holding a HUSTINGS MEETING and inviting the parliamary candidates for the General Election and also the candidates for councillors for the town centre and Portfield Wards to speak and answer short questions.

Our next meeting is on Monday 2nd March in Druitt Hall at 7.30pm.

Knowing how best to handle their laptops, tablets, and other ‘smart’ devices can be a struggle for many of the older generation. But a new community initiative launched in Christchurch has the answer - call on the help of the younger generation.

It’s not unusual for schools in Dorset and elsewhere to invite the elderly into their IT classrooms to practise on the school’s own computers. What makes this initiative special is that the two generations meet out of school, allowing the senior students to learn on their own equipment.

The meeting place is a room attached to the Priory Church, in Priory House, where the seniors have the benefit of being taught on a one-to-one basis by IT savvy 13 to 15-year-olds from Twynham School, as part of their growing Student Voice initiative.

The project was the brainchild of the church’s outreach chairman, Christine Westlake, supported by Colin Bacchus as well as senior staff and students from Twynham School. It took six months to set up because of the need, in the youngster’s interests, for a risk assessment and parental permission. But the wait was well worth it, said Christine, because both generations were gaining a lot from the experience. “Particularly in the first week the youngsters quickly started to adapt the way they spoke to their students, to suit them better, and the school has been delighted with the way their efforts have been received,” she commented.

One particularly pleased senior student was Brenda Shelley who was able, for the first time, to use her iPad to “Skype” friends in Florida. Meanwhile Adam Winter, a young leader for Student Voice at Twynham explained that the project has been a real hit with the students involved too. “We really value this opportunity to develop our own communication and interpersonal skills, something which our future employers will value. It is great to be part of something that helps to bridge the gap between the generations”.

Until February half term the 15 young instructors are working in school time. After that their weekly classes will run in their own time for an hour after school, at least until Easter. “It just shows how willing they are to give this community service,” said Christine.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? MARCH - THE GREENHOUSE GUIDE

People often ask me, “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?”

My reply is always, “My greenhouse.”A greenhouse has many benefits, chief of which for me is that it extends the gardening year.

With a greenhouse you can potter in your garden all year round, and grow a range of plants which simply wouldn’t thrive without the extra protection.

Before choosing a greenhouse you will need to check whether your local planning authority imposes any restrictions. While you don’t normally need planning permission, building regulations do have to be adhered to.

Buy the biggest greenhouse you can afford that will fit comfortably on to your plot - you will always fill it! But even if you can only afford a tiny one - my first one had a base of just 4’ by 5.5’ (1.2m by 1.7m) - it will still be a worthwhile investment.

The aluminium- framed types are very sturdy and relatively cheap. Wooden-framed constructions are more attractive though, and often better in a small garden where everything has to earn its keep. Western red cedar is good because it lasts a long time and weathers really well.

Greenhouses are even more useful if they are heated. I started out with paraffin heaters, but found they produced a lot of condensation and were messy and smelly. Electric heating is best, and very economical if you fit a system thermostat so that it only switches on when necessary.

Apart from heat the most important factor is ventilation. In high summer this is vital to prevent your plants from cooking. Automatic arms which open the vents at a pre-designated temperature are really useful. External blinds are also very good as they prevent sun scorch.

Finally, fit staging along one edge of the greenhouse for your pots, and dig a soil or gravel bed on the other side for things like tomato plants.

Now all you have to do is plant some seeds and invest in a few tender perennials.

Great Greenhouse Tips • Fit your greenhouse to level foundations.

• Orientation isn’t important, but make sure it isn’t in the shadow of the house, or overhanging trees.

• Ventilate well.

• Any electrical work must be carried out or certified by a qualified electrician to comply with part P of the building regulations.

• Don’t be tempted to use a household electric heater. It won’t cope with the damp conditions in a greenhouse.

• Fit a water butt to the down pipes at either end of the greenhouse to conserve water.

March is a busy month for me, as I mentioned before, on the 20th is when I celebrate my 15th birthday! However, this month I also have my grade 3 viola exam to prepare for and take. I am worried about taking it as it is a lot of pressure and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not the best at coping under lots of pressure.

This time of year my friends and I go down to Christchurch Quay to meet up and chat.

The Quay is a lovely place to go during spring as the changes are beautiful (although I do recommend you take a coat as it can get cold by the waterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edge) and if you get hungry the Old Mill Tea Rooms is a great place to eat.

They specialise in snacks, lunches, all day breakfasts, cakes, teas and coffee. The service is wonderful and it might just be me, but whilst there I get a real sense of community which I think is great! I highly recommend it!

Swirly Lemon Drizzle Fingers INGREDIENTS

200g butter, well softened, plus extra 200g golden caster sugar 4 large eggs 100g fine polenta or fine cornmeal 140g self-raising flour zest 3 lemons FOR THE SWIRL AND DRIZZLE

4 tbsp lemon curd 5 tbsp golden or white caster sugar zest and juice 1 lemon METHOD

Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4 and make sure there’s a shelf ready in the middle of the oven. Butter a rectangular baking tray or small roasting tin, about 20cm x 30cm. Cut out a sheet of baking paper a bit larger than the tin, then push it in and smooth it out with your hands so it sticks to the butter. Snip into the corners with a pair of scissors to get the paper to lie neatly.

Put all the cake ingredients and a pinch of salt into a large bowl, then use electric beaters to beat until creamy and smooth. Scoop into the tin, then level the top.

Spoon the lemon curd over the batter in thick stripes.

Use the handle of the spoon to swirl the curd into the cake - not too much or you won’t see the swirls once it’s cooked. Bake for about 35 mins or until golden and risen. It should have shrunk away from the sides of the tin ever so slightly and feel springy. Don’t open the oven before 30 mins cooking is up.

Leave the cake in the tin for 10 mins or until just cool enough to handle. Carefully lift out of the tin and put it onto a cooling rack, sat over a tray or something similar to catch drips of drizzle. To make the drizzle, mix 4 tbsp sugar and the lemon juice together and spoon over the cake. Toss the lemon zest with the final 1 tbsp sugar and scatter over the top. Let the cake cool completely, then lift onto a board, peel away the sides of the baking paper and cut the cake into fingers.

Will keep in an airtight tin for 3 days.

Mum’s the Word My last onion based article created quite a few conversations, so, I thought I may spread a few more handy hints that have worked for me over the last few Natasha years...hopefully some of them may help you!

And if anything, it’s all either low cost, free, or things you can pick up on your weekly shop in Christchurch. Bonus!

Bread...did you know if your wall is covered in finger prints from little hands (mine always is!) or from adults alike, rubbing bread on the marks makes them disappear...genuis! Also, although it’s not time to pop to our local lovely beaches just yet, when you do, take some talc with you, sprinkle on damp feet and the sand just wipes straight off.

This has been so helpful since moving here.

Bumps and bruises are commonplace, young and old; one of the best things for preventing a bruise appearing is to rub butter on the area, nifty hey?

Staying down the line of food, a finger full of peanut butter is amazing at getting rid of sticker mark residue left on books or furniture, spread it on, and leave for about 10 minutes, then wipe away. All these little tricks can be so much more effective than usual methods. Give them a try and if they work, just type in ‘cleaning with vinegar’ onto your computer, you’ll be in for a treat...

On a slightly different note now, I have to remark what a lovely local community we have.

Every time I pop into our town I always end up stopping and having a chat with a stranger, maybe someone offering help, maybe shopping in the same store, it’s a lovely thing and something many communities loose. Next time you’re out and about locally, stop and have chat, give a smile, it’s wonderful who you can meet along the way, maybe even tell them the peanut butter tip??
