Local History by Len Wigg - Ancient sounds still audible in Christchurch I expect we remember Spring 2010, when air travel ceased because an unpronounceable volcano in Iceland had erupted. It was feared the ash in the upper atmosphere might damage jet engines. An eruption in April 1815, which is the focus of this article, was the climax of a decade of dramatic volcanic activity, which affected weather worldwide. When Mount Tambora in Indonesia exploded, it was the largest such event in recorded history, about a thousand times greater than the 2010 one. The estimated 150-180 million tons of dust thrown into the atmosphere dramatically reduced the amount of solar energy reaching the earth’s surface. There was much less sunlight than usual, lower temperatures, more rain and crops failed. The River Thames froze in February 1816; snow fell in Sussex in early September and the editor of the Salisbury & Winchester Journal wrote then, “The severity of the weather has been beyond all former experience.” Three things in Christchurch Priory are linked to this. A boy, presumably attending the school in St Michael’s Loft,W Walden, carved his name in 1800 on a seat in the Quire. Probably a relative,William Walden, born in Lyndhurst has left us details of his early life, including working in Christchurch. In 1817 & 1818 he became unemployed, along with thousands of other farm workers in the serious depression. He asked the Overseers of the Poor in Lyndhurst and later Minstead for financial help. His interviews were recorded.
4 months, then served Mr Domine here as a weekly servant for 2 years. Next he worked on the Isle of Wight for 5 years, then to Mr Neale of Lyndhurst as a servant for 16 months. He moved to Minstead, (the second interview), where he lived for 9 months and married his wife, Sophia.” Both times his request was refused, and he was given a `Removal Order’ to another parish. The rising cost of food and recent changes to Poor Law penalised the poor and made their situations even worse. Richer residents in Christchurch arranged a `job creation’ project – to build a ceiling in the Priory nave. This was finished in 1819, and the central ceiling boss has the date MDCCCXIX. In April 1816 Percy Bysshe Shelley, whose monument is at the west end of the Priory, and wife Mary visited their friend Lord Byron near Geneva. The weather was so wet and gloomy that they stayed indoors and competed in writing horror narratives. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, a legendary horror story; Lord Byron wrote a poem Darkness, and in a letter he wrote of `a celebrated dark day, on which the fowls went to roost at noon, and the candles lighted as at midnight’. No wonder they did not do the usual tourist things! The bleak summer of 1816 has thus left a distinctive mark on literature as well as in the Priory.

christchurch postcards – early 20th century Two views of Christchurch in the early 20th century. Trams arrived in the town in 1905 and the terminus was outside at the Dolphin Inn in Church Street. The electricity to drive the trams was generated by a newly-built power station in Bargates. On the extreme left of the view looking along the High Street from Church Street can be glimpsed the frontage and iron railings of Square House, a grand Georgian building that fell into disrepair after the Second World War and was demolished in 1958. Beyond that is the arched entrance the Christchurch Brewery, one of the numerous breweries in the town. At the far end of the High Street can be seen a building belonging to Aldridge’s Brewery that almost blocked the road. Beyond that, to the right, is the Antelope Hotel, which stood on the site of the present roundabout. The view of Church Street shows that many of the buildings on the left, including Froud Bros. boot shop on the corner with Castle Street, have survived largely unaltered. However, the Dolphin Inn on the right and neighbouring buildings were all swept away when the area was redeveloped in the 1970s. Christchurch Eye • July 2016 • 11

GOLD MEDAL AND THE YOUNG FLORIST OF THE YEAR TITLE FOR KAY WILLIS OF FAIRMILE FLORIST Kay Willis of Fairmile Florist, based in Christchurch, has won a Gold medal and the title of Young Florist of the Year 2016 at the RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year competition, an outstanding success. RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the beating heart of the flower world, showcasing the very best designers the world has to offer, and with this being Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday, who is patron of the RHS, it’s an extra special year to win a gold medal. Kay and her fellow competitors had to create a headdress to be worn at a Brazilian Carnival. Kay’s stunning design represented the carnival atmosphere by using flowers, plants, wire and wool creating a vibrant and intricate design. This is such a special time for Kay, who said “I’m absolutely shocked, I was not expecting a Gold, let alone to win!” The design took 8 weeks, many 100s of hours to create but Kay said how it was so worthwhile. The world-class judges said the design was of such a high standard, particularly in design and technique. The level of work by all the florists was exceptional. Whilst this is a break from the usual work that Kay produces on a daily basis at Fairmile Florist, it shows just what expert professional florists can create. Kay has an impressive list of competition wins under her belt but this is the one that tops them all, congratulations.

Christchurch Festival - July 1st - 3rd Well it’s that time of year again and the Christchurch Festival is nearly upon us. The small band of volunteers have been beavering away behind the scenes since finished last year’s festival. With dancing all around the town on Saturday and music on The Quomps from Friday evening, it’s looking to be another special weekend. How do we maintain the high standard or even improve on it? Well, this year, for the first time, we will have a second stage to entertain the crowds during change over time on the main stage. This will feature emerging bands and old favourites that otherwise wouldn’t make it to The Festival; this is being put together by the Lighthouse Project and promises to be a great addition to the weekend. The main stage has a total of 15 fantastic bands this year, with headliners Pronghorn, The Jo Burt Experience, The Fliks and the ever popular Lady Winwoods Maggot. The Festival is organised entirely by volunteers, with no aid from the Christchurch Council, as many seem to think. As each year passes we are all getting older and we are really keen to start to hand this on to a new generation of people who could give The Festival a new lease of life. So, if you are interested in music and want to see The Christchurch Festival thrive into the future please make yourself known over the weekend, we’d love to talk to you.
Dance Festival What sort of dancing catches your eye? The exuberance of Morris dancing, the precision of Appalachian Dance, the exotic costumes and movement of Belly Dance, the cultural aspects of various National Dances, or keep fit with Zumba? All these and more are on display throughout the day and around the town on Saturday 2nd July - FREE! The Dance Festival is a complementary aspect of the Christchurch Festival which takes place at the Band Stand, in Saxon Square and in Church Street from midmorning ‘til about 4.30pm and culminates in a joint display of the dozen or so dance groups (mainly local, but with some visitors) in the Square, performing for the Mayor, who will award the trophy - a Wooden Spoon! - to the ‘winning group.’ As usual, a street collection will be taken up for the Mayor’s Charities of the year. PLAQUES IN CHRISTCHURCH - by Stephen Roberts No. 1 - Nothing Happened “On this site Sept. 5, 1782 nothing happened.” Some might say, “You can have too many plaques,” and here is the tongue-in-cheek antidote. I was reminded recently of this ‘plaque’ in Bargates, for plaque it undoubtedly is, but a plaque that commemorates, well, nothing.
Interestingly, these non-plaques exist elsewhere and poor old September 5th 1782 is usually the butt of everyone’s jokes. So, was this, genuinely, a day when nothing happened? Well, actually, we were fighting the American War of Independence. There was ‘action’ involving a British ship-of-the-line, ‘HMS Hector’ and a couple of French vessels, resulting in dead and wounded. But, hang on, the plaque is talking about the site in Bargates, so did anything of import occur there on September 5th 1782? Well, the faux plaque is faux itself, as the building in question didn’t exist then. 78, Bargates is part of a terrace, once known as ‘Alezi Place’. This is a part of town that has changed considerably and this terrace (66-88) dates to the early 19th century, with most of Bargates rebuilt since 1860. Important 19th century survivors include the ‘Railway Hotel’ and Baptist Church, whilst the art-deco former Rialto Cinema (now the Royal British Legion) is early 20th century. Bargates was widened around 1904/05 to accommodate Bournemouth trams, which involved some old buildings being taken down. The ‘Red Lion’ was pulled down and rebuilt further back, morphing to the ‘Royalty Inn’ around 2000 and now housing. Our terrace lies a little north of this. After the dust had settled on the shenanigans with the trams we know that 78 was occupied by

William Perry in 1910, the number having changed a year earlier. He had presumably survived all the construction work a few years before. The licensee at Stephen the ‘Red Lion’ was George Budden, whose heart must have been beating a little easier now his pub was no longer in the firing line. Poor Mr Perry might have fancied nipping to the ‘Red Lion’ occasionally, as his northwardneighbour (80) was none other than the ‘National Telephone Call Office’, Christchurch’s first telephone exchange, so presumably a ‘noisy neighbour’. The last building in the terrace (86) was a post office, under the jurisdiction of John Perrin Lock. This is today a café.
It seems quite a bit has happened in this part of Bargates, but possibly not on September 5th 1782. I jest not, this is the most popular ‘nothing happened’ date in Britain. Edinburgh has a faux plaque for this date, as do Great Yarmouth and Rye, among others. If you fancy adorning your own abode with one, these cast-iron signs can be acquired via Amazon (same date). Oh, and if you’re interested, September 5th 1782 was a Thursday. Next time: A ‘proper’ plaque

One of the most successful businesses in the centre of Christchurch is not even a “for profit” business. It is a charity run with the support of 200 unpaid volunteers.
The Regent Centre was built as a cinema 85 years ago in 1931 at the start of Hollywood’s Golden Age. But as cinema audiences declined, so did the Regent Centre. For a period it was a Bingo Hall and when that failed the doors were closed in 1973 and the property lay empty. Fortunately the Council purchased the building and with its support and that of volunteers investing many hours of unpaid work, the centre was reopened ten years later in 1983 by actress Dora Bryan. After years of hard work, by volunteers and a small team of paid professionals, the Centre is now an immensely successful enterprise. It boasts an enviable and varied programme of cinema, live professional shows, music acts and high-standard amateur theatre productions. It’s at the forefront of satellite relays from a variety of live productions – so much so that there’s every chance that this year it will win the prize as the theatre which has sold the highest number of tickets for satellite broadcasts from the National Theatre in the whole country.
Every year the number of “sell out” shows increases and its policy of putting 50p from every ticket into a development fund means that it is able to improve its premises methodically. Last year the toilet facilities improved (importantly increasing the number of ladies’ loos as well!)
Last year turnover reached £1 million for the first time, meaning that it’s now a self-funding business (with some help from its well-intentioned Council landlord). What a great success to have in the heart of Christchurch – and a warm thank you to all the volunteers that make it possible. If you are not already a regular customer, do give it a try.

MEET SMIFFY THE OLDER CAT Smiffy is a long stay cat in desperate need of a home and has been sadly overlooked. HELP US TO GET DORSET TO GLOW GOLD!
A group of Dorset parents of children with cancer have got together with other parents from around the UK to try and make a difference and change the face of childhood cancer. Without improved awareness and increased publicity, little will change in terms of early diagnosis, research, treatment or prognosis for our children. Glow Gold September is a childhood cancer awareness campaign to get iconic buildings throughout Dorset to illuminate in gold during the month of September. Vicky Turner, Christchurch Mum, whose little girl passed away from Leukeamia, says, “We need iconic buildings across Dorset to illuminate their external facade in gold for September from dusk until dawn. We want to improve the profile of childhood cancer in line with that of the more well known adult cancers”. 10 children are diagnosed with cancer in the UK every day. Of those a quarter won’t survive the treatment and the vast majority will be left with lifelong side effects from the treatments that have changed little in the last 30 years. Vicky continues, “Our aim is to ensure the colour gold becomes synonymous with childhood cancer and our awareness month September. So far we have buildings such as The Priory Church and Highcliffe Castle signed up to Glow Gold in September but we need more iconic buildings to get involved. Please help us to get your place of work or favourite building to light up in September for children’s cancer awareness! ” With increased awareness of childhood cancer, comes greater awareness of the early signs and symptoms, earlier diagnosis, increased funding, increased research, kinder, more targeted therapy and ultimately a change in the prognosis for kids diagnosed with childhood cancer.

Christchurch Citizens Association July – how can it be? With so much happening in Christchurch time just flies by. We hear that there are plans, although still in the very early stages, to demolish the gas works, the Civic Offices, the former Mostyns site and Two Riversmeet sport centre and create a riverside marina with housing, shops and a park. Should this come to fruition we need assurance that Two Riversmeet and the Civic offices will be rebuilt in the new complex. The council has said that they receive many applications for re-development and in light of funding cuts each proposal must be viewed extremely carefully.

During July and August residents will be consulted on the reorganisation of Local Government in Dorset and asked what they want for Christchurch and their children’s future. In the 1980’s when the last reorganisation took place, Bournemouth and Poole both became Unitary Authorities, at that time there was a push by Bournemouth to takeover Christchurch but a huge majority of residents asked Christchurch Council to resist this takeover and we were successful in retaining our independence. Since then Christchurch has remained a DEBT FREE COUNCIL.

At the time of writing it is unclear which options will be offered to the residents of Christchurch. The Consultation however will probably consist of several options i.e. a) A Unitary Authority with Christchurch becoming part of Bournemouth and Poole.
b) A Unitary Authority comprising of Bournemouth, Poole, East Dorset and Christchurch. c) A Shire County comprising of all the authorities in Dorset WITHOUT Bournemouth and Poole. This is probably the best option which retains most of Christchurch’s independence and heritage. With these changes about to take place it is so important that you please let your residents association and the council know what you want for our town. SOPLEY FESTIVAL
This year’s Festival takes place on Saturday July 9th at Owls Barn and The Old Vicarage, Derritt Lane, Sopley between 12noon and 5pm. In the Field will be displays of Vintage Tractors, Classic Cars, Steam Engines, a Pets Corner, Fun Dog Show, Terrier Racing, Craft Demonstrations, Produce & Handicrafts, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Rifle Range, Bar and BBQ plus lots more! On the Back Lawn there will be a ‘Kidzone’ with Bouncy Castle, Coconut Shy and Skittle Alley, Face Painting, a Maypole Dancing performance plus ice creams. On the Front Lawn there will be tea, cakes and live entertainment with local performers including The Bluestockings Vocal Trio and Sopley School Choir. Christchurch Community Partnership Our quarterly Community Forum brings together individuals, groups, businesses and other organisations.
These public meetings focus on issues relevant to the needs of the community, and have included mental health provision, young people, and homelessness. The Forum vision is to identify both gaps and duplications, addressing them in a resource-effective way through partnership working. In this way, together, we can improve the services that are available to our community. Our Homelessness Forum in October resulted in a project group addressing the rough sleeping part of the homelessness spectrum. Information about available support was pooled and a little information card produced for rough sleepers, of whom there are about a dozen in Christchurch. A local charity, EDP, provides a light breakfast; the Food Bank helps with equipment and a dry for wet laundering service; Triple F provides a hot meal 3 evenings a week with Twynham Primary School providing fresh fruit and vegetables; and we are collectively considering a Sleepsafe scheme for next winter. We were also able to secure a shed to provide shelter for a young man sleeping on the streets. Can you help by offering the use of your shed – or even a spare room? Often only small actions are needed to help people off the street. Recently, we celebrated our first success story. An appeal for clothes triggered a wonderful response, and a small sum of money offered by a local charity. This was used to purchase a birth certificate for a gentleman, who had no identification, and paid the deposit and initial rent on a room. This assistance, with the support of the other initiatives outlined above, improved his confidence and appearance and helped him into a job.

Teen Eye Moving on... We all go through this transition phase in our lives, where we are unsure of where we want to be Sam and what is next in our lives. Questions are asked where we are unsure of the answer. We are still learning. Not just the knowledge given in school but new social experiences. The paths after GCSE’s are pulling us all in different directions; some are leaving to go to other schools and colleges to take exciting and new opportunities, whilst others are staying on for 6th form. New opportunities, a chance to meet new people and undertake more exciting ventures. Friends and acquaintances we’ve known for 5 years will no longer be there, although the memories we’ve all made will last a lifetime. I hope we can all maintain our close friends and make new friends in 6th form. This transition from leaving secondary education and entering further education is simply a footprint in the sand as every footprint is unique like the choices we make. The thought of a long summer and a farewell at the prom is driving us through the last of the exams. Fear consumes every girl before prom; the thought of someone else wearing the same dress, leading to the inevitable social media post of who wore it best. The amount of thought behind the outfits; hoping their coordination skills have paid off. The boys also dress to impress, in their smart suits and polished shoes, with their hair styled to perfection. Prom is a time when we can have one last laugh, one last time to celebrate the times we’ve had together before heading off down our own paths. I would like to wish everyone good luck for the exam results. Be proud of what you achieve and strive for the future.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? GARDEN ORNAMENTS
Ornaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ‘em or hate ‘em subject. I fell firmly into the hate ‘em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs. Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, windmills and concrete toadstools. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a banshee-like scream, brandishing a broom at us.
I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a boulder fountain and I occasionally brandish a broomstick at my sons when their football strays too near...
As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met:

Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed.
Context The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures.
Size Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are there to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you.
My father had a grumpy gargoyle-like creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girly friend of mine has a series of small bronze faeries set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality.

To set off ornamental grasses try ceramic balls in vivid blues and greens set among cobbles. For minimalist contemporary plots, mirrored columns and pyramids look striking.
Classical statuary and urns look best in more formal, traditional settings. They are best made from marble or stone. Resin copies can look tacky. Don’t be frightened to show your sense of humour. Quirky can look brilliant in the right setting. Sculptor Dennis Fairweather’s best seller is a stone face and hands which emerge from a tub of water as if the figure had just been for a dip!
Natural materials can be a good starting point for garden ornament novices. Balls and sculptures made from willow are subtle and elegant additions to any garden.

Scouting life in Christchurch THE SUMMER MONTHS

This year the Cub Scout section is 100 years old and to start the celebrations we held a weekend of fun and activities at our campsite at Braggers Wood.
This was over the Whitsun bank holiday where 120 Cubs and 30 or so adult leaders spent a weekend under canvass. The cubs had a brilliant time (and so did the leaders). The campsite was full and one of my jobs in Scouting is to meet the leaders and young people from round the country who have come and stayed and enjoyed not only our campsite but Christchurch, the New Forest and all the facilities we have on our doorstep.
During June we hold our traditional Scouting competition called the “Emlyn Trophy” at Braggers Wood. Teams of Scouts from each Troop will spend a weekend on various Scouting skills. During July and August many of our young people will be camping either near to home or round the country. This year the furthest trip is in fact to France, the Burton Scout Troop are organising this. Other years groups may go anywhere in the world as scouting brings many opportunities.
As always, myself and our teams are looking for help. We need leaders and administrators. The more help we have, the more young people we can give scouting opportunities to. Our most adventurous age range is Explorers 14 - 18 years. If you think of yourself as a possible Bear Grylls (our Chief Scout) then helping at Explorers might be for you - please let me know (email dc@christchurchscouts.org.uk). We also need people to help run the Groups and District. For example is anyone good at PR - we need a media manager to help us promote scouting in Christchurch and our area. If you can help please let me know. We hope you enjoy the summer.

Another busy month for the Cadets with lots happening at the detachment.
We’ve had six Cadets compete at the SW Regional Athletics in Plymouth looking to gain places in the SW Squad to compete in the National Finals in Grantham on 11th June. All six did really well with five first and three second places between them. Cdt Simmonds will be looking to defend his Shot-Put Gold and also competes in the Long Jump, Cdt Cracknell will try to improve on last year’s Silver in the Javelin and also competes in the High Jump and Cdt Booth is going to compete in the 200m. To have three in the Regional Team all from our Detachment is a real achievement.

We also had a really successful Fieldcraft Weekend at Bovington and despite torrential rain it was smiles all round. For many of the newer Cadets this was their first taste of life in the field, sleeping in a ‘Basha’ they had constructed themselves and cooking up their own rations. I have to say I was really proud of all the Christchurch Cadets who really did a fantastic job of keeping their morale up whilst coping with the weather.
Congratulations to L/Cpl Simmons who was awarded her Bronze DofE Award by our Company Commander Lt Brooks. This was the result of lots of hard work over the last year, and spurred on she’s already started to work towards her Silver Award. At the time of writing we are also preparing to attend the Burton Veterans Day Parade on 12th June, more about this next month. Mum’s the Word Excitement brews in our house as we approach the final days of term; the countdown to the cutting of the ribbon to summer freedom has begun!

The summer prequel of school trips, achievement evenings, shows and leavers’ assemblies will mark the end of another school year. So, inspired by what lies ahead I’m harnessing our enthusiasm for summer fun, family and adventure and writing our own summer bucket list. We’re writing them early so I don’t have to scramble for ideas later just in case I run out of this ‘summer steam’! Whether we do all the things on the list doesn’t really matter because there’s excitement in simply writing it – almost like a trailer for a really good film. My mental inspiration mood board is brimming with summer holiday rituals - I can taste summer in the air and I can’t wait for it to unravel with all its colour and splendor. My boys are dreaming of riding bikes, climbing trees, the garden sprinkler, ice creams, late nights and pyjama mornings, rolling down banks and den building and I’m dreaming of concentrated happiness – longer days, dirtier children, later bedtimes and stress free mornings. We’ll swarm to the splash park when the sun’s hot and high, have evening picnics on the beach at Hengistbury Head and climb trees on St. Catherine’s Hill. Camping adventures, random road trips and even mundane errands take on a new vibe in the summer and all the time we’ll be writing their childhood memory books. Have a fabulous July and why not create your own summer bucket list - making sure you cross things off in bright colour co-ordinated pens! Let’s make summer flourish and hang on for the ride…whatever your summer holidays hold, may they bring you much happiness.

Spinach Stuffed Chicken Breasts
Boneless, skinless chicken breasts stuffed with the tangy flavor of feta and the vegetable goodness of almost a pound of spinach! INGREDIENTS
3 chicken breasts 8 oz chopped frozen spinach, cooked according to package directions and squeezed dry. 3 oz feta, crumbled 4 oz cream cheese 1 clove garlic, diced 1/4 teaspoon salt, divided 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon olive oil
METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 450. 2. Mix the chopped frozen spinach, feta, cream
cheese, garlic and half of the salt in a medium sized bowl. 3. Cut a pocket into each chicken breast. 4. Separate the spinach and cheese mixture into three parts, and roll into thick logs. Stuff each log into the pocket you made in the chicken breasts. Season with remaining salt and pepper. 5. Heat the olive oil in an ovenproof pan set over medium high heat, then add the stuffed chicken, “top” side down. Cook for 5 minutes, then flip the chicken over. 6. Place the pan into the oven, and bake for 10 minutes. If your chicken breasts are extraordinarily thick, cook for 2 to 5 minutes longer, or until juices run clear when you poke the chicken with a fork.
