contents Cheryl

It’s the Christchurch Carnival weekend on 13th and 14th August. The parade will make its way from Two Riversmeet to the Quay where there will be lots going on, including games, rides, live music, food and lots more for all the family to enjoy. I hope the sunshine will make a guest appearance for the weekend! Find out all about the weekend in the pull out guide included. We’d like to extend a very warm welcome to The Christchurch History Society who will now be writing the Local History page for us. The Society have a vast amount of historical information which they will be sharing with us each month, we look forward to discovering Christchurch of yesteryear. Speaking of which, we have old images of Highcliffe in the new “Days Gone By’ pages, kindly supplied to us by The Red House Museum and The Hampshire Cultural Trust.

Highcliffe-on-Sea Traders Association We’re still all settling down from the Wimbledon excitement (yes, I know it was a while ago, but it was so Helen great) and still patiently waiting for a type of summer to happen or at the very least an illusive Indian summer. Still there have been some beautiful days to sit out and enjoy the surrounding areas and wander along the coast. Rumour has it that the coast, our stretch of coast that is, is no longer to be built on with chalets, it does seem that the project was quite an undertaking, requiring plumbing and water supply to be routed to each one and this may have been a bit over ambitious for a rather fragile cliff top area. So it’s back to the drawing board, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate the whole idea, preferably with input from everybody. Anyway, enough of that. With regards to the High Street projects in motion, the HGV petition (to restrict access through) is being mulled over as part of a larger area plan and the resurfacing of the pavements is awaiting a feasibility study I believe. The Post Office is no longer moving as we have probably realised by now. So the ex Lumen8 premises are still up for grabs. You may also have seen the artistic impression for the Hoburne rebuild along their section of the High Street, very impressive looking it is too and it should provide a more attractive entrance to the Village, hopefully enticing more shops to open in jazzy new premises. Good for residents and traders alike hopefully. Anyway I may have some more concrete information next month on shop moves/ openings/closures etc.

INSIDE HIGHCLIFFE SAILING CLUB

When the weather is fine, there really is no better place to be than the rear balcony of our lovely club with a glass of something cold. With a westerly orientation we get to enjoy a multitude of colours as the setting sun dips behind the Priory for another day. And so it was for the Midsummer Posh Nosh Party where we all got together and dined, danced and watched the sun go down on yet another beautiful day in the harbour. The club has been incredibly busy over the last few weeks. As well as holding parties, we have laid on the D-Zero National Sailing Championships, assisted the TV crews with their media coverage, filled our photo gallery with action shots and hopefully been efficient and convivial hosts to the 40 competitors who travelled from all over the UK to compete. We have also run a very successful Junior Training programme, in association with Hengistbury Head Outdoor Centre, for our budding junior members and have hopefully inspired the next generation of sailors to take to the water and make the most of the wonderful coastline we have around us. Highcliffe SC sailors have also been racing with their neighbours, Mudeford SC, in an invitational race series and against their up-river neighbours Christchurch SC in the interclub derby. Mudeford SC dominated the invitational but it was Highcliffe who clung on to the interclub trophy for the second year running. We are all gearing up now for Mudeford Week which runs from 1-7 August. The event sees a week of sailing and is great fun for both hardened sailors, novices and hopefully our new clutch of juniors and is always a lovely spectacle for visitors to the quay. Further information about Highcliffe SC can be found on our website www.highcliffesailing.co.uk find us on Facebook or follow us on twitter @highcliffe.

I have been advised not to write this month’s article!

First I am going to alienate 58.8% of you. Second, given the time gap between me writing it and you reading it, who can guess what else has changed. I am, of course, talking about Brexit. I spoke for Remain at the Christchurch Chamber of Trade meeting just before the vote and felt most the businesses – and certainly the youngsters who braved the meeting - were in favour of Remain. Christchurch, however, supported Brexit and 18,268 voted leave (against 12,782 remain). Whilst I believe in the E.U., I recognise that the E.U. leadership did little over many years to sell its own benefits and I feel they have no-one to blame but themselves. Putting to one side Westminster politicians and the national finances, how’s it going to affect Christchurch?

On employment, one of the biggest employers on the edge of our town, J P Morgan, is already talking about having to move jobs to Europe. Lush, a big employer in Poole, has said its next expansion will now be in Europe rather than locally.

In housing development, with the dramatic plunge in the shares of the large house builders I suspect there may be a question mark now over if and when the major housing developments planned for Christchurch will proceed. Also our nursing homes and our hotels (some of our key businesses) depend on their many hardworking European staff. Those staff are now fearful for their futures. If they are not reassured, our care and hospitality services will face major problems.

The leave slogan was “take back control”. For the time being, however, we are going to be subject to forces way beyond any control we may have. Let us hope our new leaders, whoever they maybe, will be up to the challenges we now face.

CHRISTCHURCH PLAQUES - by Stephen Roberts No. 2 - Lt-Gen John Brian Keane

Sometimes plaques need deciphering. Take one at 85, Mudeford, which bears the name ‘Mudeford House’ and the date 1789, the year of the French Revolution. Well, this wasn’t always ‘Mudeford House’, the original house of that name having been built next door, the site of today’s ‘Christchurch Harbour Hotel’ (95, Mudeford), previously known as the ‘Avonmouth’. The story goes that the ‘Avonmouth’ (or ‘Mudeford House’) was built in the early 19th century and was home to a succession of military figures, one of whom, Maj-Gen Evan Maberly (1815-99), bought the house in 1871. He decided to rename his abode ‘Avonmouth’, neatly transferring the name ‘Mudeford House’ to one next door, where the plaque exists today. Maberly was a local benefactor, the original Stanpit Village Hall (1887) built on land he donated. The plaque commemorates one of those military men, Lt-Gen John Brian Keane (1781-1844). Keane lived at ‘Mudeford House’ (the original one) in 1841 (Census), so it looks like the plaque transferred to the second ‘Mudeford House’ along with the name. The plaque tells us Keane was ‘C in C Jamaica 1833, C in C Bombay, Cabul ect (sic) 1840’.

So, we have a plaque relating to the building next door, recalling just one of the military men who lived there. Why, he didn’t even own the building, which we believe belonged to a French Royalist, Col de la Tour, between c1830 and c1844. So, why was Keane so special and worthy of a plaque? And, was it the house’s owner (de la Tour) who commemorated his famous tenant, with ‘1789’ a reminder of the iniquitous revolution across the Channel?

Plaque on Mudeford House

Well, Keane was actually Irish, joined the army aged just eleven and served in the Peninsular War against Napoleon. He became commander-in-chief in the Stephen West Indies, administering the colonial government of Jamaica, then commanderin-chief of the Bombay Army, leading a combined British-Indian army in the First Anglo-Afghan War (hence Kabul). Keane also served in Egypt, America, where he was wounded twice at the Battle of New Orleans (January 1815), and France. For someone lauded on a plaque in Mudeford, Keane was here surprisingly briefly. Given his Bombay duties lasted until 1840, Keane can only have retired to Mudeford after that. In 1842 (or so) he moved to Burton where he bought ‘White Hayes’, a mansion once the birthplace (1790) of Christchurch’s most famous martial-figure of all, Admiral Sir Edmund Lyons, commander of the Black Sea fleet during the Crimean War. It seems these military personages liked to follow on from one another, as far as habitation was concerned. We must assume Keane was renting in Mudeford, whilst house-hunting (as you do). Keane passed away peacefully, in Burton, in August 1844, aged 63. Next time: Twinning Steve Roberts - www.steveroberts.org.uk @SRChristchurch (Twitter). Local History by Members of The Christchurch History Society www.historychristchurch.org.uk

The Treasures of a Local Society In June 1918 a group of like-minded people, including Sir George Meyrick of Hinton Admiral, H. Gordon Selfridge of Highcliffe Castle (and the Oxford Street Store in London) and Herbert Druitt, founded the Christchurch Historical and Scientific Society, the aims and objectives of which were very similar to those of the current Christchurch History Society. From those early days, despite a number of difficulties, including several decades of inactivity, the thriving Christchurch History Society exists today. The Christchurch History Society, founded in its current format, dates from 1989 and organises ten monthly evening meetings a year from September to June, guided walks and visits as well as maintaining an archive of some twenty thousand documents, maps, books, photographs and newspaper cuttings. It is this treasure chest of items that provides a highly valued record of the Christchurch area. The Society was fortunate to secure a £9,400 Heritage Lottery Fund Grant to enable a much enhanced website to be developed, replacing the previous site, which was not capable of hosting an on-line catalogue of the Christchurch History Society Archive. The 1st August 2016 is an important day for the Society in that it is the Launch Day of the new website following six months of hard development work. The new website can be visited at www.historychristchurch.org.uk.

As yet the on-line catalogue has not been made live to allow more time for the cataloguing of the archive, but nearly sixteen thousand of the items have been processed in whole or in part. Following the receipt by the Society of the Heritage Lottery Fund Grant, in the past few months previously unsorted boxes of archival material have been unpacked and their content reviewed and distributed into smaller boxes and envelopes to make the content easily accessible to researchers. With the help of several members, much of the Archive content has been indexed in a digitised database that can be searched, so that it is easy to locate information for any query. This has brought into one database information about documents, books, maps, newspaper cuttings and photographs that the Society holds. This digitised database is being used as the basis for the new online catalogue that, hopefully, will be accessible to members and non-members later this year. Progress on this part of the Heritage Lottery Fund Project has been very good but there is still a large amount of work to be done to make a useable on-line catalogue. The activity still needing to be done includes an audit of the content of the Archive, something that we believe has not been carried out during the last fifteen years, cataloguing of a collection of around six thousand digital photographs and documents that have come into the possession of the Society in recent years, and the incorporation of several collections that have recently been donated to the Society. Once the audit and listing of the remaining archival material is completed the data will be transferred, along with the data already prepared, into the on-line catalogue. The first evening meeting for the Christchurch History Society will be held at Christchurch Junior School Hall, Clarendon Road, Christchurch on 6th September at 7:30pm. The topic will be “Christchurch in the 60’s and 70’s” by John Lewis. Visitors £5.00 and Students £2.00.

Gliders in Christchurch Neil Bancroft

The presence of gliders and gliding in Christchurch occupied only a relatively short time in the town’s recent history. It is therefore the more surprising that in our family we have been involved in both successive generations. In 1940 my future mother-in-law, the late Mrs Kitty Sargent, who died in 2013 aged 95 was a housewife living in Walkford. Two years later she was helping the war effort by building gliders in the Airspeed (later de Havilland) factory in Somerford. The gliders that Kitty was helping to build were “Horsas”, designed for landing airborne troops. They could be towed by bombers or transport aircraft such as the Dakota. They were most famously used on D-Day and later the crossing of the Rhine in 1945.

My own involvement with gliders in Christchurch was by way of the Air Training Corps 622 Squadron Gliding School on Christchurch Airfield. As an Air Cadet from the Brockenhurst Grammar School Combined Cadet Force I did my glider training in 1959, flying Slingsby T31 dual-control gliders.

The gliders were of all-wood construction and Kitty would recall how she and her fellow workers had to build them using thousands of tiny brass tacks. They drove the tacks in with small hammers, like toffee hammers. As part of their training they had to make their own toolboxes, and it was only if the workmanship of these was of a sufficiently high standard that they could move on to the actual glider production.

These were winched launched with the pupil in the front cockpit and the instructor in the rear. A steel cable attached below the nose was pulled in by a high-speed winch at the other end of the airfield and at an altitude of one thousand the cable was released. The training programme then required us to complete a rectangular flight path before landing, making our approach from the other end of the airfield and landing onto the single wheel beneath the centre of the glider.

Although Kitty remembered those times with affection, there were drawbacks such as having to crawl into very confined spaces to work. To speed up production there was round-the-clock working, and another of the less pleasant aspects of the job was that on alternate months they had to work twelve-hour night shifts.

On the last weekend of my training one of the few accidents occurred. A cadet returning from a solo flight had misjudged his approach and came in too low. He just skimmed over the bungalows on the other side of Mudeford Lane then disappeared from sight before cart-wheeling over the tall hedge onto the airfield. The glider was badly damaged but the cadet pilot was very fortunate to suffer only a grazed leg. In the very best traditions of the RAF he was immediately sent up again in another glider, before he could dwell on the accident and possibly lose his nerve!

FOREVER HOME CAN YOU GIVE OUR OLDER DOGS A LOVING HOME?

MEET OUR KITTENS AMY AND MANGO

Hi my name is Fergus. (right) I’m a Jack Russell who is really looking for someone who will love me as much as my last human, who sadly passed away. I am now 9 years old so I’m a bit set in my ways.

Amy and Mango are typical kittens who love to play and enjoy a fuss but have been overlooked by prospective owners who would rather adopt a more unusual colour. The centre is currently looking after 4 pairs of cats and while the rest of us look forward to the summer break these unlucky felines are facing a lonely summer sitting on the shelf. Michele Pay, deputy manager said: “The number of pairs that we have been asked to take in by owners is unusually high. They come in for a range of reasons, one of the most common in this difficult financial climate is not being able to afford to keep two cats. “All of our pairs of cats would make great companions so I’d urge people to give us a call if they have space for two cats. Adopting a pair will also help us free up pen space and use our limited resources to help other needy felines out there.”

For more information on any of the animals in our care please contact us on 01202 87500, e-mail: admin@waggytails.org.uk or visit our website www.waggytails.org.uk

My ideal human companion would by elderly like mysel, so that we could grow old together. No other dogs please.

Hi I’m Nellie a Red Setter and an old lady. I am 10 years old I think but could be a little older I’m not really sure, I have a loving and sweet nature, love to go out for a gentle stroll and a sniff but will also happily plod round the garden. No other dogs please.

Teen Eye The first social event and registration of the sixth form - the dreaded paintball arrived. Filled with nerves of Sammi meeting new people, you try to find balance with old friendships as you create new ones. The paintball scene was a warzone, every once in a while hearing whimpers from those who got shot and the sound of paint bullets consumed the air. As more summer jobs appear, the rush of applications and the hopeful looks soon flush over our faces as money becomes more important to us, as it symbolises independence from our parents. However, I am finding it difficult to find a job that doesn’t want previous experience or requires the applicant to be over 18. How are we meant to get experience if companies are not willing to employ us? This is a question I have been asking myself over and over, and leads me to wonder if experience is considered higher than qualifications by potential employers. Then once the application process is complete you either face rejection or an interview.

We are always told that “first impressions count” in an interview so therefore we should feel optimistic and dress in our smartest clothes. Then your posture is crucial, slump and the employer will think you are uninterested; fidgeting with your hands makes the employer think you are unable to concentrate; and sitting completely still won’t make you stand out from the other candidates. And if that wasn’t enough to take in we also have to be creative with the answers to the questions, which is then followed by the long wait that feels like forever to find out if you got the job or not. GCSE results day looms ever closer as regret and anticipation builds and spreads tension across the country. I hope you achieve what you need for your chosen apprenticeships, colleges and sixth forms, as said in the Hunger Games “may the odds be ever in your favour”.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? FUNKY FOLIAGE

We all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they tend to be relatively short-lived makes them special. But a garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own.

Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it. Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer.

It likes soil which doesn’t dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant.

Hostas have truly beautiful leaves but I’ve tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of superslugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them! I’ve had some success with the variety “Frances Williams” which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well...preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade.

42 • Highcliffe Eye • August 2016

I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning limegreen foliage unfold each spring.

A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I keep meaning to try again. When I do I will but the much hardier green variety... just in case. Many people forget grasses when they think about foliage but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis “Zebrinus”. The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February.

Finally, if you have the space, for real in-yourface foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides “Aurea”. Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that’s really funky foliage.

Mum’s the Word Hurray! We’ve completed ‘marathon week’ otherwise known as the last few days of school and summer is slowly creeping into our routine.

Hilary

Do I dare jinx it and say we’re falling into a fairly pleasant summer rhythm? The ‘summer bucket list’ ideas are a constant invitation to our appetite for adventure. Conversations start with ‘Let’s do, Let’s go, Let’s find’ and I love it. We all have childhood memories which we want to protect our children from – be it divorce, bullying, broken friendships, losing at ‘top trumps’ or struggling in school – but summer has the potential to bring out the best in many families and I’m making certain it brings out the best in ours. We’re welcoming the holiday season by watching ‘Summer Spectacular’ at the Regent Centre (27th - 30th July), enjoying Stompin’ on the Quomps (6th August) and joining in the Christchurch Regatta, fun fair, carnival and fireworks (August 13th -14th). These moments will be interspersed with harbour walks, dinghying down the Stour, charity shop book hunts, the beach and splash park, a summer film night, chalk drawing on the patio, playing in the paddling pool, blowing bubbles anywhere, taking a train ride or bus trip and then if the planets align – hopefully a meal out ‘sans’ kids for Jez and I. But be in no doubt that these wonderful plans will all be weathered by reality - there’ll be messes to clear up, arguments, kids will wreck havoc and we’ll have the inevitable stir craziness, the ‘Can we?’, ‘Can you?’ followed by ‘I’m bored…’ moments. The reapplying of sunscreen on little moving bodies will test my patience and the difficult leaving the park moments where ‘two more minutes’ turns to ‘I’m not gonna ask you again’ which becomes a fake ‘I’m leaving!’ strop. How I love Summer! But aren’t we lucky to have all this in Christchurch and the surrounding areas? Here’s a thought - What summer memory of this year will your children treasure from their childhood?

Spicy Beef Burger

INGREDIENTS

450g/16oz lean beef mince 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp tomato ketchup 1 tsp mustard 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 red chilli, finely chopped 1 small onion, finely diced 2 spring onions, sliced handful basil leaves, chopped olive oil for frying

METHOD In a large bowl mix together the mince, garlic, tomato ketchup, mustard, egg, chilli and onion. Dive in with your hands and mix until the ingredients are well blended. Just before cooking, add the spring onions and basil to the mixture and divide into four patties. Heat a little olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the burgers. Turn them once only, cooking for about 5-6 minutes each side. (Alternatively you can cook them under a grill for the same time turning half way through.) Serve with burger buns and salad.
