Welcome.... July…well and truly summertime. The children will soon be finishing school for the long summer holidays and those who have been taking exams will be done and dusted, I hope very much you’ll enjoy your time off. This month kicks off with the ever popular Shake and Stir Vintage Festival taking place at Fisherman’s Walk and Southbourne Grove and Green from 1st to 3rd July. The weekend will be jam packed with all things vintage; cars, live music and dance as well as trade stalls and food and drink. If you’ve ever fancied learning to Jive this is your opportunity. I learnt many years ago and have been dancing on and off since then, it’s so much fun and a great way to keep active. If you fancy trying your hand at tennis then the Southbourne Tennis Club on Iford Lane have an open day on Saturday 16th July from 11am to 5pm, they welcome all ages from 3 years so it’s never too early, or too late to give tennis a go…and with Wimbledon in full swing what better time to try.

Local History by Hattie Miles walkingtalks.wordpress.com

It’s almost impossible to miss, so I’m sure you will have spotted the magnificent terracotta face that looks South from the corner of Julian Terrace in Seabourne Road. This is Southbourne’s very own ‘Green Man’. Julian Terrace was built in the 1920s by an architect known as ‘Hoppy’ Ware his rather un-PC nickname alluded to the fact that he only had one leg. It was he who commissioned the Green Man from the firm Carter & Co in Poole. Carter’s was founded in 1873 by Jess Carter and was hugely successful. Originally they made floor tiles, but quickly expanded to wall tiles. In fact examples of the company’s work can still be seen in London where millions of Carter’s tiles were used to line the tunnels of the London Underground. Carters eventually became Poole Pottery in the 1920s, though the name wasn’t changed officially until 1963. I haven’t managed to discover why Julian Terrace’s Green Man was chosen to embellish the building. Even Bournemouth’s ‘Tile Lady’ Jo Amey, an absolute expert on historic tiles, doesn’t know why, but she did tell me that the reason it is still in such magnificent condition is due to “the quality of the clay and manufacture”. She explained that good terracotta will last well if it’s not damaged by impact. The symbol of the Green Man, a face surrounded by greenery with leaves and shoots sprouting from his nose, ears and mouth, dates back many centuries. It would seem to be pagan, though there are green men in many British churches. Green men also appear in a variety of different ancient cultures. I understand there’s a Mesopotamian one at al-Hadr

in Iraq which is thought to date from 300 BC and another in a temple at Baalbek in Lebanon from Hattie the second century shows a full leaf mask very similar to a Green Man. Others can be found in Borneo, Nepal and India. Strangely, the term ‘Green Man’ is a relatively modern one. Lady Raglan (wife of the scholar and soldier Major Fitzroy Somerset, 4th Baron Raglan) used the term in 1939 in an article for the Folklore Journal about church symbolism and it’s been used ever since as a label for these intriguing faces. Before that they were known in academic circles as ‘foliate heads’. Remarkably, even though it was her only article on Folklore it established the Green Man as a subject of legitimate historical study. It also introduced the name into common usage. Our Southbourne Green Man is a very fine figure indeed. Carter’s Tiles did an exceptional job on the building. Some of their other decorative features are more careworn. The terracotta ‘Julian Terrace’ is only just legible now and the black and white mosaic numbering on the entrances are largely gone. Numbers eight and six are the best preserved. Take a look next time you are passing. If anyone has more information about our Green Man or Julian Terrace please contact me. Do keep and eye out for my guided walks on walkingtalks.wordpress.com

BOSCOMBE & SOUTHBOURNE ROTARY It’s All Change for Rotary!

Stephen Nagle

Yes, by the time you read this column all Rotary clubs will be commencing a new Rotary year. Our club year runs from July to June so, as I pen this column in June, my term as President is fast coming to a close. I know we all say, where does the time go, but I really cannot believe that another year has almost passed by! It has to be something to do with having plenty to do and having a lot of fun along the way - so all positive stuff. With each new club year we have a new Club President and Michael Coombes will take over from me on 7 July and I am very much looking forward to his year in office. We benefit greatly by offering all members the opportunity to become President based on their length of service with the club. Some members choose to pass the opportunity by or take it up some years after they become eligible to fit in with business and family commitments. This approach ensures a wide range of personalities, which means that each year we can look forward to a slightly different style of leadership which gives the club a natural regeneration. Supporting Mike this year, we have President Elect Brent Coleman, Junior Vice President Bill Jones, Hon. Secretary Russell Oaten and Hon. Treasurer Prakash Shah. Our Rotary meetings are held weekly at lunchtime on a Thursday and we are always happy to attract new members who are interested in working for their community through Rotary projects. To find out more about Boscombe and Southbourne Rotary please call David Shires on 07967 743123, Email: davidshires2@yahoo.co.uk

TUCKTONIA: 7 - THE INSIDE STORY CONTINUED Written by Alexander McKinstry

This month we resume our chat with Paul Taylor, ex-head gardener at Tucktonia, who started work there in 1976 – a year after the site’s purchase by Grand Metropolitan Hotels Ltd. Most days began with him emptying the bins at 6 a.m., after which he would repair to Elford’s Engineering (across Tuckton Bridge) to purchase thirty cans of petrol, used to fuel the go-karts, go-boats and other attractions. Mid-morning, a retired signwriter named Mr. Dibley tended to drop in with a consignment of parts for the model village, each new figure having the words ‘DIBLEY DID IT’ on the reverse. Two of these miniature figures were saved by Paul shortly before the site closed in 1986, and are pictured here – almost the last fragments of Tucktonia to survive anywhere. After a morning’s work, Paul and his colleagues would adjourn to The Riverside Inn at Tuckton for liquid refreshment: ‘We avoided The Golfers’ Arms,’ says Paul, ‘otherwise we’d just be called back to work at a moment’s notice.’ There was little point doing much gardening in the afternoon, firstly because ‘the grockles’ would be milling about in their hundreds, and secondly because, after a drinking session at The Riverside, few of Paul’s colleagues would be fit to stand up, let alone operate a mower. Paul himself tended to clock off at 3 or 4 p.m., but would be back to clean the amusement arcade at night, or patrol the site for Sentinel Security – finding time to chat with Bournemouth Police, who called in for a cup of tea at 2 a.m., or Christchurch Police, who called at 3 a.m. The police were particularly useful in teaching Tucktonia staff how to break into cars, as visitors were always locking themselves out of their vehicles during the summer months. By effectively doing three jobs, Paul regularly notched up seventy-hour weeks at the site; only Kim Skinner, the maintenance manager, achieved a similar tally (and could often be found crashed out in Tucktonia’s hidden control room). The longest shift Paul remembers working was ‘thirty-seven hours, flat out’ on 28-29 December 1979, when the River Stour burst its banks, flooding the cellars of The Golfers’ Arms. Paul spent the shift manning three electric

pumps, desperately trying to prevent further damage; luckily, the model village was spared, as most of the floodwater careered down Fairway Drive and into Stour Road. This was the flood that famously devastated the Iford Bridge Caravan Park, sending several caravans floating down the river. One ended up crashing onto the Tuckton golf course; Paul and his colleagues managed to get £80 for it in salvage money, equivalent to two weeks’ wages.

The flood was one of many problems Grand Met encountered during its eight-year ownership of the site, and, being short of space, we will look at these difficulties in greater detail in next month’s issue. One final anecdote from these years bears repeating, however. One afternoon, a drugs squad officer, holidaying in Christchurch, took Paul aside and enquired as to the origins of a large, longleafed plant in the Tucktonia rockery. Paul had often wondered about the plant. It turned out to be a herbaceous plant of the species Cannabis sativa, which had probably flourished as a seedling in the slurry routinely purchased from the Christchurch sewage works. ‘I did say to the officer,’ recalls Paul, ‘do you seriously think, if I was to grow cannabis, I’d do it in the middle of a crowded fun park?’ The officer agreed it was unlikely, and the plant was cut down without any further fuss. Grand Met had far more serious problems to grapple with, and ended up selling Tucktonia – and the entire fun park that surrounded it – in 1983. Alex McKinstry’s The Village of Tuckton, 35,000 B.C. - 1926, is available from (http://natulapublications. co.uk/). You can contact the author at thebankruptcyman@gmail.com

FOREVER HOME CAN YOU GIVE OUR RABBITS A LOVING HOME? As you are probably aware Waggy Tails Rescue are primarily a dog rescue, homing several hundred dogs a year. However we also rescue small animals and at the moment we have an abundance of rabbits. They come to us for a variety of reasons. Our rabbits come fully vaccinated, sometimes neutered and always vet checked. At the moment we have 18 rabbits in our care, with a further 10 waiting to come in. We are looking for loving forever homes for singles as well as pairs. We carry out hutch checks and a donation fee applies.

DOGS We are also currently appealing for homes for our oldies. We have several at the moment and they would like a retirement home with lots of love and cuddles. Help is available for vets bills. MEET SMIFFY THE OLDER CAT Smiffy is a long stay cat in desperate need of a home and has been sadly overlooked. He is currently the longest staying cat at the centre and in desperate need of a new home. Smiffy is a 10 year old black and white male. He arrived at the centre after being found living outside as a stray and he now needs a new home with outside space to explore. He is a friendly cat who enjoys a fuss but will let you know when he has had enough. Smiffy has been sadly overlooked which may be due to his age but he is young at heart and has plenty of love to give.

Cats Protection’s Ferndown homing centre is appealing for new homes for their ‘long stayers’, to free up pen spaces needed for more cats in need. Staff at the homing centre are keen to stress that cats that have been in their care longer have just as much love to give and make equally good companions as any other cats. Owners adopting from Cats Protection have the peace of mind that their cat will have been examined by a veterinary surgeon, microchipped, vaccinated, neutered if old enough and will also come with four weeks free insurance. We provide these benefits and treatments so people don’t have to worry about them following adoption, which is a big plus for moneyconscious owners.

To find out more about adopting a long stay cat like Smiffy from

CATS PROTECTION’S FERNDOWN HOMING CENTRE please call on 03000 120175. Alternatively, visit the centre’s website at www.ferndown.cats.org.uk.

BOURNEMOUTH SPORTS MASSAGE

I’m not sure I’d consider myself a ‘runner’, a ‘jogger’ maybe, but I don’t think my speed or mileage would qualify me a fully-fledged runner. Anyway, regardless of my running status I’ve been running for a few years now and in that time my legs have certainly been put through their paces. I’ve managed to sustain a few injuries in my endeavors, a broken ankle being my highest accolade and a variety of aches and pains along the way. So when I was invited to visit Jason at Bournemouth Sports Massage in Christchurch I jumped at the chance. I was sure that my tired legs would benefit from some much needed massage therapy.

After a consultation with Jason, where I outlined my problem areas, he set to work. He explained that Sports Massage is not just for those who partake in sports, but it is also greatly beneficial to those suffering from postural problems, stress, anxiety as well as everyday aches and pains. Sports massage aims to relax soft tissue, increasing the delivery of blood and oxygen to the massaged areas, helping the body to relax.

Jason has been a practicing massage therapist for 16 years and certainly knows his stuff, he has a vast knowledge with regards to injuries and conditions and tailors the massage to suit individual clients’ symptoms. He treated my legs and back to some deep tissue massage, which although initially painful, eased as he went on and the tissue relaxed. Each time I felt discomfort Jason told me to smile, telling me it helps us to relax...and it worked! I came away from my massage feeling much lighter on my feet and certainly more generally relaxed. I’m still ‘jogging’ and I must say that since my massage the nags are much less apparent. I will definitely go back and see Jason again, it’s advised to treat our muscles to some regular massage…my legs will certainly thank me for it. By Lucie Holt-Davies

Teen Eye Hello,

I can’t believe it’s July already, this year is going so quickly!

We’ve been lucky to have Emily some nice weather lately; I will be able to enjoy it now my exams have all finished. It seems like ages since my free time wasn’t spent revising; it’s so nice to be able to have fun again. I am so looking forward to the long summer ahead of me... even if I am dreading results day next month! A highlight of last month was The Wheels Festival in Southbourne. Fisherman’s Walk was alive with loads of fun activities for children including face painting and a mini fairground. The live music being played throughout the day created such a good atmosphere and everyone looked like they were really enjoying themselves. There were some amazing supercars in Southbourne Grove as well as lots of BMX stunt shows happening throughout the day. My favourite part was the Bubble Show, which got such a good response with crowds of people watching, it was brilliant.

This month I’m looking forward to the Shake and Stir Festival, on the 1st – 3rd July. Situated in Southbourne, it’s a free event which involves classic cars, live music and lots of dancing. There will be rock and roll bands, an orchestra and nostalgic songs from the 1920s to the 1970s. There is even the opportunity to join in with some dancing and learn how to do the Lindy Hop at Southbourne Grove and Green. Also, there will be Punch and Judy, Raffles, a Magician and a Vintage Photo Booth. Should be fun! You can take a peek at all the events taking place online at www.southbournefestival.co.uk. I hope you all have a happy and stress free month!

Spinach Stuffed Chicken Breasts

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts stuffed with the tangy flavor of feta and the vegetable goodness of almost a pound of spinach! INGREDIENTS

3 chicken breasts 8 oz chopped frozen spinach, cooked according to package directions and squeezed dry. 3 oz feta, crumbled 4 oz cream cheese 1 clove garlic, diced 1/4 teaspoon salt, divided 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon olive oil

METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 450. 2. Mix the chopped frozen spinach, feta, cream

cheese, garlic and half of the salt in a medium sized bowl. 3. Cut a pocket into each chicken breast. 4. Separate the spinach and cheese mixture into three parts, and roll into thick logs. Stuff each log into the pocket you made in the chicken breasts. Season with remaining salt and pepper. 5. Heat the olive oil in an ovenproof pan set over medium high heat, then add the stuffed chicken, “top” side down. Cook for 5 minutes, then flip the chicken over. 6. Place the pan into the oven, and bake for 10 minutes. If your chicken breasts are extraordinarily thick, cook for 2 to 5 minutes longer, or until juices run clear when you poke the chicken with a fork.

Emily is off to pastures new so we are looking for a new local teenager to write for us. If you think this is something that you would enjoy then please email us at admin@localeyemagazines.co.uk To advertise please call 01202 477214

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? GARDEN ORNAMENTS

Ornaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ‘em or hate ‘em subject. I fell firmly into the hate ‘em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs. Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, windmills and concrete toadstools. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a banshee-like scream, brandishing a broom at us.

I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a boulder fountain and I occasionally brandish a broomstick at my sons when their football strays too near...

As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met:

Ornament Ideas…

Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed.

Context The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures. Size Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are there to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you.

My father had a grumpy gargoyle-like creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girly friend of mine has a series of small bronze faeries set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality.

...not a gnome in sight!

To set off ornamental grasses try ceramic balls in vivid blues and greens set among cobbles. For minimalist contemporary plots, mirrored columns and pyramids look striking.

Classical statuary and urns look best in more formal, traditional settings. They are best made from marble or stone. Resin copies can look tacky. Don’t be frightened to show your sense of humour. Quirky can look brilliant in the right setting. Sculptor Dennis Fairweather’s best seller is a stone face and hands which emerge from a tub of water as if the figure had just been for a dip!

Natural materials can be a good starting point for garden ornament novices. Balls and sculptures made from willow are subtle and elegant additions to any garden.

This month I am going to talk about stings and what to do. Land based insects: The main sources of stings on land are from bees and wasps. We all know that bees will die if they sting but a wasp won’t so wasps seem to be a lot braver. From a first aid point of view a sting in the mouth is the biggest problem. To avoid this it is far safer to drink from a clear bottle with a lid than a can where the wasp can hide inside. The lifeguards are unable to provide any medical sprays for stings but will be able to put ice on the sting. If you have an allergy to wasp or bee stings make sure you bring your epipen to the beach and that someone with you knows where it is. Marine stings: The weaver fish is something that a lot of us have heard of. The fish itself simply buries itself in the sand to ambush passing shrimps and stings as a defence when trodden on. The most important thing to do when stung is to get treatment as soon as possible. The initial feeling will be like treading on glass but there will only be one or 2 small puncture marks and very painful. It’s far better to get it looked at by a lifeguard. The treatment is hot water (not too hot). Finally there are the jellyfish. Currently very rare to get anything worse than a nettle rash but always best to get it checked out. As the sea is warm there is a risk of getting some with a worse sting in the future. Do not touch a jellyfish to remove it from someone, even when it’s dead – they can still sting.
