Local History by Hattie Miles walkingtalks.wordpress.com

One of my favourite local spots is Hengistbury Head, that windswept uninhabited promontory surrounded on three sides by water, at the end of Broadway. It’s such a wonderful place to walk and never disappoints - the changing light, the shifting beach, 360 degrees of stunning views and a sense of isolation, despite a million visitors every year. I remember sitting on the head, gazing out to sea on 11th August 1999, hoping for a glimpse of the solar eclipse. It was the perfect place to be, despite cloud hiding the moment. It was an almost biblical scene as hundreds of people made their way up the slope to stand on the head and gaze at the sky. The atmosphere was extraordinary and as the light faded a dog nearby settled down to sleep. It was never fully dark but just a few minutes later, as the false dawn arrived, birds sang as if it was a perfect morning. How different that scene would have been had Harry Gordon Selfridge, the pioneering American retail giant who in 1909 founded Oxford Street’s Selfridge’s store, got his way. He was a larger than life individual whose lavish lifestyle and free spending ways would eventually be undermined by his penchant for gambling and fast women. He lived for six years, from 1916, at nearby Highcliffe Castle, renting it as a safe haven for his family during the World War One Zeppelin raids on London. Harry could see the Head from the grounds of the castle and when he eventually managed to buy it from Bournemouth landowner Sir George Meyrick, he conjured up a plan to build a magnificent status

symbol - ‘the biggest castle in the world’. He employed respected architect Philip Tilden to draw up the plans. Hattie It was to be a massive 250room neo-classical palace, a Gothic fortress with four miles of ramparts, its own theatre, a huge ballroom and a Versailles-style Hall of Mirrors. At one point he even planned to include a 300-foot tower. It was pure folly of course and thankfully the money started to run out before any building could take place. Eventually in 1930, following the Wall Street Crash, Harry was forced to sell Hengistbury to Bournemouth Council. Ironically the sale included a stipulation that the land could not be built on. But just imagine if he had seen his fanciful project through. Today this place, known internationally as a site of natural beauty and interest, could be strewn with the ruins of Harry Selfridge’s unsustainable shrine to excess. The original plans for Harry’s folly are kept at the Royal Institute of British Architects Library in Portland Place, London. If you want to know more about Harry Selfridge and his time at Highcliffe Castle there are various tours from the Castle and also one of my guided walks from the Cliffhanger Café. You can find details of ‘Highcliffe: from Slop Pond to High Society’ and other local walks on walkingtalks. wordpress.com

Scholarships for Durlston Court Pupils Durlston Court pupils are celebrating Scholarship Examination success once again this year as an impressive range of Scholarship offers to Senior Schools have been received. Year 8 pupils have received Scholarships offers including Academic, Music, Sports, All-Round and Performing Arts. Headmaster, Richard May commented “we are very proud of our pupils. The Year 7 and 8 programme is a full and challenging one. Pupils and staff work extremely hard whilst following the Common Entrance Syllabus. At the same time, our specialist teachers and extensive facilities enable pupils to develop their creative and sporting talents. The variety of Scholarship offers received clearly demonstrates the ‘all-round’ nature of a Durlston education.” In addition to the scholarship offers, Year 8 Durlston pupils have once again achieved a 100% success rate in the King Edward VI, Southampton Entrance Examination and outstanding individual performances have been recognised at other schools. During the Canford School Scholarship examinations Tamara Read-Ward ‘‘performed particularly well in the STEM subjects and French and was the top-scorer in Maths. At the St Swithun’s School examinations Ami O’Callaghan was awarded a Modern Foreign Languages Prize for her outstanding performance in French. Other pupils have also been securing offers, places and scholarships for when they move on from Durlston to Senior Schools including Marlborough College, Cheltenham Ladies College, Godolphin School, Ballard School Talbot Heath, Millfield and Bournemouth School at 13+.

BOSCOMBE & SOUTHBOURNE ROTARY Bonjour!

Stephen Nagle

We are very excited within our club to be hosting a visit of French and Belgian Rotarians and their wives for a weekend in our town. The association with the French and Belgian clubs of Chateaudun and Ciney respectively goes back many years and we meet up annually taking it in turns to visit each club. So next year we will be traveling to Chateaudun. This of course requires some frantic practice of our ‘school’ French to try and have some conversational skills to greet our guests! So far I have not got much further than ‘Bonjour mes amis!’ Seriously we are really looking forward to this opportunity to meet up with old friends as well as new acquaintances making the trip for the first time and show them some of the great attractions in our area. This year one of the planned events will be a visit to the RNLI head quarters in Poole for a tour of their training facilities, which are world class. There will inevitably be some eating and drinking involved and we celebrate the weekend with a gala dinner. But there is a cultural aspect to all of this and it is a great experience to live with different families in different countries albeit from within just a small corner of Europe. Our Rotary meetings are held weekly at lunchtime on a Thursday and we are always happy to attract new members who are interested in working for their community through Rotary projects. To find out more about Boscombe and Southbourne Rotary please call our Club Secretary, David Shires on 07967 743123, Email: davidshires2@yahoo.co.uk Why not ‘Google’ us or look at our Facebook page www.facebook.com/pages/boscombesouthbourne-rotary-club/413289782023719

Southbourne-on-Sea Business Association (SoSBA) New to Southbourne is our traders website sosba.co.uk.

Clive Here you can find out all the latest news, events and information or register your own event. Also quick links, giving you access to report issues and matters to the police neighbourhood team, very easy and user friendly on all your devices.

SoSBA are lobbying hard with the council to restore some of the lost parking on the high street following the recent road improvements. Southbourne has a great open public car park, which we encourage all to use. The free high street parking, which we’re attempting to restore some of, is really helpful for that quick pop in trip to the chemist, dry cleaners, bank and convenience facilities. We would love to hear about your parking experience so we may forward them to your ward councillors and council to support our parking policy for more free short term parking. Join the debate at sosba.co.uk. Ever wondered how Southbourne has magically transformed from a sleepy suburb of Bournemouth into a thriving place attracting big money businesses like Tesco, Sainsbury, Costa Coffee and Brewhouse & Kitchen showcasing festivals like the “Wheels comes to Southbourne” (June 4th) & “Shake and Stir” (1st to 3rd July) events? Companies investing in an area look at each town and what it has to offer and the organisation associated with it. The BID areas (business improvement districts) in the UK attract a lot of attention from the business world, as they understand BIDs work to bring customers to an area creating desirability and greater wealth. Southbourne has been part of the Coastal Bid, which runs from Westbourne to Hengistbury Head and is one of two BIDs voted through by Bournemouth businesses in April 2012. I’d like to thank all those businesses that voted for the BID and all the improvements we are now benefitting from and enjoy. Further information can be found at coastalbid.co.uk

Southbourne Surf Lifesaving Club

This month I have asked Andy Joyce from Surf Steps (www.surfsteps.co.uk) to write about surfing etiquette and safety.

Complements of Catherine

Reflexology

Bill

and other Complementary Therapies within Tuckton Podiatry Centre Step inside .... and drift away to a beautiful place

The water is a high-risk environment. Make sure you are prepared to be as safe as possible by avoiding or minimising the risks. Having the right equipment is paramount, but the most dangerous things are the hard surfboards that could knock you unconscious. Here are some guidelines to avoid others and their hard boards. Surf etiquette is followed to stop you running into someone else or vice versa.

Posters showing surf etiquette are available at most surfing shops and schools but here are a few guidelines:

• H ave at least one lesson-qualified coaches can help you develop faster and safely. • After a lesson, find a part of the beach where there are few/no wave riders, ideally with lifeguards nearby. Ask them or other surfers if it’s safe to go out or if not, where? • Always wear a leash to connect you to the board, so you can get back to your board whenever separated from it and stops it crashing into someone else. Wetsuits in our waters are a necessity for most of the time due to water temperature and they have positive buoyancy to help keep you afloat and stops minor bumps, cuts and scrapes. • When wave riding, etiquette or code, can be broken down into 2 easy rules: • 1. Before taking off on the wave, look both ways, if no one is on it…go! • 2. If someone is on the wave…don’t go! • If you fall or get thrown off your board (a wipe out) cover the front and back of your head (one arm for each) and relax. Remove your arms a few seconds after you clear the surface of the water (takes into consideration your or other boards hitting you in the face/ head as you surface). If you follow these common sense rules, the chance of you getting into trouble with another wave rider or even worse is kept to a minimum. Aloha and happy wave riding!

TUCKTONIA: 6 - THE INSIDE STORY Written by Alexander McKinstry

Last month we promised to look at what it was like to work at Tucktonia, the model landscape at the back of the Tuckton Leisure Park which drew tourists in from around the globe. An expert witness is Paul Taylor, who worked as a gardener there for ten years – joining not long after the model village opened, and leaving in 1986, six months before the entire leisure complex closed. When Paul joined there were two fellow full-timers on the gardening team: Arthur Chilcott, who mowed the golf course, and Ted Tolman, an ex-Spitfire pilot, whom Paul replaced as head gardener several years in. Paul’s working year effectively started each November, when the flowerbeds got trampled to death during the site’s annual fireworks display. He then spent the winter planning and planting the next year’s beds, tending to the results throughout the following summer, tourists permitting. The hardest part of the job was cutting the grass around Stonehenge, as it meant dismantling the model beforehand: ‘I used to beg them to put it on AstroTurf,’ says Paul. ‘I’m still not sure I ever reassembled Stonehenge correctly.’ Working at the Stour Road site became an addiction for Paul, because as he recalls, he and his colleagues ‘absolutely loved the place’; his wife describes herself as ‘a Tucktonia widow’ to this day. Surviving on beer and Pro-Plus, he often clocked up a seventy-hour week, returning four nights each week to clean the amusement arcade – ‘I used to find more money under the machines than I ever got paid’ – and monitoring the site two nights a week for Sentinel Security. Later, when the amusement arcade was carpeted, Paul used to grab a few hours’ sleep on the floor with the guard dogs, keeping his sleeping bag onsite, rolled up between the water tanks. Paul’s other duties included escorting celebrities around the

site – including Jon Pertwee, pictured below, who was promoting the TV show Worzel Gummidge. Paul’s job was to tow the actor round the complex on a strawfilled trailer. ‘At one point I thought I was going to kill him,’ says Paul. ‘They hooked the trailer up to a Ransome triple-deck mower, and I couldn’t get the blessed thing under control.’

Perhaps Paul’s oddest job was jumping into a sewage tank to remove a discarded mop-head, which was threatening to block the maceration pump: he was paid £20, and given the rest of the day off. A few weeks later, the same thing happened again. And again. ‘I think I chucked that mop-head into the tank eight times, to get a day off,’ recalls Paul, ‘and they never twigged.’ If Paul and his colleagues got away with such antics, it was partly because no one was quite sure who was in charge of the site during these years. Grand Metropolitan, who had bought the site in 1975, seemed to appoint a new managing director each week, and only Geoff Rout (who left in 1983) remained at the helm for any great length of time. These were lively times, too, marked by new rides, floods, and the inadvertent cultivation of a cannabis plant in the ornamental rockery. We will look at these episodes – and hear a few more of Paul’s anecdotes – in the next issue. FOREVER HOME CAN YOU GIVE GIZMO A LOVING HOME?

Hi everyone my name is Gizmo and I’m an 8 year old Rotteiler cross looking for my forever home. I am a very gentle boy who is looking for a special retirement home as I’m almost blind, but more than capable of living a near normal life with some small adjustments to help me adapt and find my way around. I understand a number of commands which help with this and love to play ball in the garden with my squeaky ball. When I go on walks, I prefer that two people accompany me as it helps me feel more secure. I would love a home where I can play in the garden, laze and have tummy tickles - I love people and am very affectionate. For more information on Gizmo or any of the other animals in our care please contact us on 01202 87500, e-mail: admin@waggytails.org.uk or visit our website www.waggytails.org.uk Waggy Tails Rescue is a registered charity based in Dorset, we rescue and rehome dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a new home. We also find homes for other small furries that may be in our care. For more information you can contact us on the number above, visit our website or email us. EACH WEEK WE WILL BE FEATURING A DOG AND A CAT NEEDING A LOVING FOREVER HOME

MEET BYNX THE OLDER CAT

Bynx is an older cat in desperate need of a home and has been sadly overlooked. He is a gentle giant who enjoys human company and is very good with children over 6. Bynx is a friendly cat who actively seeks attention and would make a fantastic companion for most households.

Homeless feline OAPs are being overlooked taking on average around five times longer to be adopted than kittens.

Tanya Knox, senior cat care assistant, said: “It is a shame because older cats have a lot to offer. They tend to stay closer to home so make great companions, their characters are fully formed so you know what sort of cat you’re getting and they’re less likely to scale the curtains or knock your ornaments off the shelf! The centre says improvements in cat care have greatly raised the life expectancy and quality of life for cats across the UK, and many household moggies are now living into their late teens and early 20s in good health.

However, the bad news is that owners still appear to choose a cute, fluffy kitten over an older cat and with kitten season now underway, this issue becomes even more of a problem.

To find out more about adopting an older cat like Bynx from

CATS PROTECTION’S FERNDOWN HOMING CENTRE please call on 03000 120175. Alternatively, visit the centre’s website at www.ferndown.cats.org.uk.

Teen Eye Hi Everyone,

May has been a very long month of lots of revision for exams. It is especially hard to stay motivated to revise Emily with the weather improving so much; you just want to be out in the sunshine! I managed to pass my driving test this month too, which is extremely exciting. My test was in Poole and I was driving for around 40 minutes. It was more difficult as I was less familiar with the roads than I would be in Bournemouth but the examiner was really nice which helped my nerves. I am lucky enough to already have my own car so it was very strange to be able to go straight off driving on my own.

I’m looking forward to Southbourne Wheels Festival on 3rd-5th June. There will be lots of supercars and bike stunt shows to see as well as street entertainment and live music. Over 5000 people attended last year and the organisers hope even more will come along this year. There are many events new to this year’s festival as well, including International Beachcross quad bike racing on the beach to the west of Boscombe Pier. Further down the beach near Bournemouth, there is the return of one of the festival’s most popular attractions – the Monster Truck Arena –showcasing four massive monster trucks for the third year running. There will also be a funfair, circus, hula-hoop workshops, face painting and much more throughout the festival; it will be a great event! I will be busy revising this month but I am very much looking forward to my holiday in Mallorca at the end of it. It will be very strange to leave Twynham School after going everyday for 7 years, it’s like my second home! I hope you all have a lovely June and good luck with any exams any of you might be taking!

Summer Sausage Rolls

Makes 20 Rolls INGREDIENTS

2 large skinless chicken breast 1 garlic clove, crushed 3 rashers streaky bacon, thinly sliced 4 sundried tomato, chopped handful basil leaves, chopped 375g/13oz pack ready-rolled puff pastry flour for dusting 1 egg yolk, beaten 25g sesame seeds

METHOD

Whizz the chicken and garlic in a processor until the chicken is minced. Tip in the bacon, sundried tomatoes and basil. Pulse for 5 secs to just mix through. Season well. Roll the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut in half lengthways. Spread half the chicken mixture along the middle of one of the pastry strips, then roll up the pastry, pinching the ends together to seal. Using a sharp knife, cut into 2.5cm long pieces. Repeat with the remaining pastry strip. Can be frozen, uncooked, for up to 1 month. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Place the rolls on a large baking sheet. Brush with the egg, then sprinkle with seeds. Bake for 20 mins until golden.

Emily is off to pastures new so we are looking for a new local teenager to write for us. If you think this is something that you would enjoy then please email us at admin@localeyemagazines.co.uk To advertise please call 01202 477214

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? THE DIFFICULT PATCH

Every garden has a couple of problem patches. I’m often asked which plants I’d recommend for a problem area and two which always crop up are damp shade and dry shade. Let’s deal with damp shade first. It’s actually less of a problem than you might expect. Okay, you’ll never grow a good lawn there, bulbs will rot, and sun-loving annuals won’t thrive, but there are loads of plants that will look wonderful. The trick in the case of damp shade is to go for leaf colour, plant form, and texture. Ajuga is excellent for ground cover. A. metallica has purple leaves and tiny blue flowers and A. reptans ‘Variegata’ is a pretty variegated cream and green variety. Astilbe does very well in damp shade; it has impressive red, pink or white flowery plumes depending on the variety chosen. Hostas are also a good choice, though in damp conditions you’ll need to be on slugwatch! If your shade is very dense then don’t choose golden varieties as the colour will fade. Hostas look wonderful planted with primulas, which also do well in these conditions. Some ferns love damp shade, including the Maidenhair fern, Adiantum pedatum; most varieties of dryopteris, and the ostrich feather fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris.

Dry shade is definitely trickier. I don’t recommend fighting Mother Nature but I do think dry shade

30 • Southbourne Eye • June 2016

is one area where she sometimes needs a hand, so enrich dry soil with compost, well-rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost before planting, as this will encourage some moisture retention.

Bergenias are attractive but tough enough for dry shade and their leathery leaves colour well in the autumn, particularly Bergenia cordifolia purpurea. The pink flowered varieties are the most commonly seen but there are red and white varieties too. I have a ‘Bressingham White’ which is quite lovely. My favourite plant for dry shade is the Euphorbia. Not all varieties are suited to these conditions but E. amygdaloides with it’s red stems and lime-green flower heads will generally do very well.

Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum multiflorum) is another standby. It looks like a large lily of the valley and the variegated variety is very pretty. The trick with problem areas is to embrace them as part of your garden Treated as a gardening challenge they can be fun to plant and you’ll feel a tremendous sense of achievement when you do succeed.

Happy planting!

CAN YOU PLAY CHESS?

If you love playing and want to make new friends then our Chess Club might interest you.

Some people like to play hunched over their computer; however, we like to play in a modern, friendly setting in Southbourne. You’ll meet like-minded people and get the chance to improve your game if you want to. Chess is a great battle of minds, something which is easy to get involved with and cheap too. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to chess or you’ve been playing for years. You’ll find players of all levels here. We don’t just play during the winter, you can also join us any Friday evening from 7.15 until 10.30 pm during the summer. The first night is free and just a £1 per night thereafter. Club Competitions run throughout the year and there is League play during the winter months. Bournemouth has a thriving chess league of four divisions, involving around 200 adult players and youngsters. Why not come along to Southbourne Chess Club at Tuckton Social Club, 222 Tuckton Road, Bournemouth, BH6 3AA?

Call John (01202) 427523 today for more information or just come along. Email: southbournechessclub@yahoo.co.uk Website: www.southbournechessclub.weebly.com This year HUNDREDS of top chess players will descend on Bournemouth for a national tournament.
