Editors Letter Welcome to the October issue of Village View. By the time you read this the trees will be showing some autumn colour and the children will have settled back into school. We do hope you like our autumnal front cover with its glorious colours.

We always try our best to use advertisers from this magazine and our other publication in Princes Risborough and are always impressed by the standard of work and customer service that local businesses offer. Although it is not possible for us to use the services of all of our advertisers we do have a policy of responding to complaints (which thankfully are very few) and, if we receive 2 or more complaints about any advertiser, we do not offer to renew that advert.

Recipe

Halloween Spider Cakes Get your kids involved in making these spooky cupcakes then watch them crawl off the plates into hungry mouths!

Makes 6 muffin sized cakes You’ll Need Muffin tin with 6 paper muffin cases 120g plain flour 140g castor sugar 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder Pinch of salt 40g butter at room temperature 100ml milk ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 egg

Sieve the icing sugar into a bowl and add the butter and mix together thoroughly, take two tablespoons of the butter icing and put in a separate bowl, to this you need to sieve in the cocoa powder and mix well together add ¼ teaspoon of milk to the chocolate mix to give it a good consistency to pipe.

Decoration 100g butter at room temperature 200g icing sugar 1 heaped teaspoon cocoa powder ¼ teaspoon milk 80g melted milk chocolate 6 marshmallows 3 liquorice wheels 6 liquorice blackberries 12 white chocolate buttons

Place the marshmallows on the end of cocktail sticks and coat with the melted chocolate stand in eggcups to dry.

Smooth the butter icing onto the cake giving an even coverage all over.

Pre-heat oven 300f 170c gas mark 3 Method

Put the flour, sugar, butter and baking powder in a bowl and mix with an electric beater on a low speed.

Whisk the egg and milk together and gradually add to the dry ingredients mixing with the beater on a slow speed.

The mixture will be quite battery and loose. Spoon into the muffin cases so they are about ¾ full and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 20-25 minutes.

When the muffins are springy to touch remove from the oven and cool completely. If the cakes have risen above the level of the cake case just cut the top off to give a flat surface for decorating.

Put the chocolate icing into a greaseproof piping bag and pipe circles from inside out starting small in the centre and getting larger to the outside of the cake, then take a cocktail stick and drag it through the chocolate lines about 6 times from the centre out.

Take the liquorice blackberries and attach one to each marshmallow with a little butter icing to form the spiders head.

To make the spiders eyes pipe a blob of chocolate icing on each white chocolate button and stick them to each head with butter icing.

Finally, place the spiders body on each of the cakes, unravel the liquorice wheels and cut into 1 ½ inch strips for the spiders legs, place 6 strips on each cake tucking the ends just under the spiders marshmallow body.

On Your Own Plot

Benefits of garlic

Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year.

Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days.

Jobs for October:Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween.

Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions.

Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in!

If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years time.

As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying.

October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season.

Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain (and we’ve all had enough of that lately!), and also help keep the weeds at bay.

You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need

to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring.

If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops.

Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter.

Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

Let there be light Winter’s double whammy of darkness and bad weather is enough to bring anybody down, so why not brighten the mood - and everything else - with some high-tech lighting? From lights that make your gadgets work in the dark to remote controlled candles and lights designed to cheer you up, there’s no shortage of gadget firms with very bright ideas.

The arrival of LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs has transformed lighting. LEDs can be made impossibly small, they use tiny amounts of energy compared to their incandescent predecessors and they last for an extremely long time - and because of that they’re absolutely everywhere.

Fancy reading your Amazon Kindle in the dark?

Amazon will happily sell you a (pricey) case with a pop-out LED light that draws its power from your e-reader. Prefer a fan that creates concentric coloured rings as it spins? Search for “Mini LED Fan” and you’ll find lots. Require a torch that doubles as a Swiss Army Knife and fits in your purse or wallet?

Allow us to introduce the Victorinox RED Swiss Card Lite (pictured here), although you should probably leave that one at home if you’re planning to go through airport security.

LEDs can deliver serious benefits too. If you have down-lighters in your home, replacing the bulbs with LEDs will slash your electricity bills - although you’ll notice a dramatic difference in the way your room looks, because LEDs tend to give out a very white light compared to the yellowish glow of incandescent or halogen bulbs; if you have a bike, accessories such as the Nite Ize Spokelit bike light makes you easier to see by turning your wheel into a glowing green circle. You’ll find LED gadgets in all kinds of bike accessories: not just bike lights, but also helmet lights and task lights for urgent repair jobs.

The Drivemocion LED car sign enables you to broadcast messages to other drivers, with a choice of smiling and winking faces, THANKS, BACK OFF or SORRY. You can’t customise it to display your own messages, although that’sprobably for the best. You can also buy LED-powered, remote controlled candles (pictured below), which embed a flickering LED inside a real wax candle to deliver a surprisingly lifelike glow.

The remote control enables you to adjust the LED’s brightness, to switch between flickering light and a continuous glow, and to enable the timer mode that switches the candles off after four or eight hours.

If the winter months bring you down, a SAD lamp might help. Designed to address Seasonal Affective Disorder, LED SAD Lamps start at around £50 and deliver bright summerstyle light, which numerous studies suggest can lift the mood of people who are perfectly cheery in Spring and Summer but find their mood changing with the seasons.

Not all SAD lamps are created equal, however, so it may be worth reading reviews on sites such as lighttherapyreviews.co.uk to find out which lamp best suits your need.

LED bulbs are beginning to appear in reading lamps too, with clip-on desk lamps costing around £15 and anglepoise-style ones ranging from under £20 to well over £300 depending on where you shop and whether you want an expensive designer one or a cheap and cheerful plastic job. Whether you go for a little light that attaches to your book or an enormous metal free-standing lamp, you’ll find that LEDs are particularly good for reading: the crisp white light from LED bulbs delivers excellent contrast, which is ideal for reading black text on a light background.

Stokenchurch Youth Club - PLEASE HELP Did you know that as of 24th July 2011 funding for the Stokenchurch Youth Club by Bucks Youth Service will cease. Due to rules & regulations, for us to be able to continue we would need to form a Management Committee, which will assume responsibility for policy decisions, administration & fundraising. The good news is that the cost for the use of the Youth Centre has been promised until the end of March 2012. Also, the three existing youth leaders have agreed to continue on a voluntary basis. However, due to stipulated leader/ member ratios, occasional assistance at the Club would be required to cover this. Stokenchurch Youth Club has been running for over 40 years and it would be a great shame to see it close. If you feel you could help in any way either on the Committee

or on Club nights, please get in touch. Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Stokenchurch Dog Rescue will be holding a sponsored dog walk from the kennels in Oxford Road on Sunday 9th October, starting at 11am.

There will be the opportunity take part in either a 5K or 10K walk (about three or six miles), and you can either walk with your own dog or even without a dog. Some of the dogs at the kennels will also be available to walk if booked in advance on 01494 482695. Registration for the walks will also be at 10.30am on the day. All proceeds from this event will go towards the cost of some marquees the charity will use at various fund raising events.

Starting and finishing at the school in Frieth, the race takes in some beautiful scenery and passes through the villages of Fingest and Skirmett before cutting back up to Frieth via Parmoor.
