Editors’Letter

Welcome to the January/February issue of Chiltern View magazine.

Happy New Year to everyone! We do hope you all managed to have a lovely time over the festive season. For many, it would have been the first time in a couple of years or so that people could meet and celebrate properly together. We do hope you were able to make the most of it.

And. so here we are now in January 2023. The start of a new year often gives time for contemplation of the year before or perhaps thinking ahead, often through the tradition of making resolutions. We wonder if you have made any and whether you will manage to stick with them. For us it is often the same; to get healthier by eating better and exercising a little more, but there’s always so many chocolates left over after Christmas.

As this time of year tends to be a bit cold and grey, why not consider booking a holiday somewhere warm and sunny. Spear Travels have a great article about places to visit in Greece on page 14. You could also embrace the outdoors by enjoying a good walk – wrap up warm though! We have a new one each issue, kindly sent across to us by The Chiltern Society (page 54). Hartwell also have some great tips on how to fully embrace nature, to help stay positive if you’re feeling those January blues (page 48).

With the cold weather that this time of year brings, we should also spare a thought for those less fortunate, who may even be homeless. We have an article from Wycombe Homeless Connection on page 52, where you can read about the brilliant work they do and the difference they can make.

Until next time.

Beautiful Greece

A beautiful blend of modern hospitality and ancient history, Greece has been a holiday favourite for generations.

We were recently asked, what are the most popular destinations for 2017? Spain, Italy and the Canaries remain high on the list, but increasing numbers of travellers are venturing further afield with the biggest growth seen in cruising – both river and ocean.

It conjures up thoughts of sugar cube houses and azure blue waters leading out to the Aegean Sea. With hot weather in the summer and mild weather in the spring and autumn, relaxation and adventure can be combined at almost all times of the year. Here, we tell you about two of our top Greek islands…

Rhodes

So what is the appeal of this growing type of holiday? Could it be that you can meander along the rivers of the world or set sail on the oceans, visiting popular ports and sampling the delights of each destination which might determine whether you return for a longer stay in the future. Maybe it is the amazing standard of cuisine that you will find on most cruise ships, where every meal is another gourmet adventure, or could it be the luxurious surroundings you enjoy with a glass of wine on deck taking in the scenery around you; the best of all – cruising offers fantastic value for money!

Adorned with a stunning coastline and steeped in history, Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Rhodes Old Town is a must-visit; considered the largest and best preserved fortified city in Europe,

Now let’s explore some of the wonderful places you can visit.

RIVER CRUISES

Each day is spent meandering through sublime scenery, dotted with fairytale castles, lush vineyards, medieval towns and hillside villages. There are optional guided coach and walking excursions, providing an insight into the local culture, architecture and history. Excursions are, of course, optional as you may prefer to sit back on the sundeck and watch the world go

admire architecture from the Hellenistic, Ottoman, Byzantine and Italian periods. In fact, there are over 200 streets and alleyways that still have no name! Soak up the warm atmosphere and meander around the small streets, before walking the city walls for beautiful views. At least a full afternoon is recommended here. For some down time, make your way to the golden sands of quaint Pefkos – one is the island’s most peaceful settings. Lindos is a favourite too, where beautiful white buildings hug a hillside that overlooks a white sandy beach. The rooftop bars here have incredible views or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a walk up to the archaeological site of the Lindos Acropolis.

by, but then you may be wondering what you are missing. The most popular cruises are The Rhine and The Danube with visits to Nuremberg, Budapest, Amsterdam and Prague to name a few. Choose a 7 or 8 day shorter cruise or up to 16 nights if you really want to explore. Let’s not forget The Douro (for Portugal) and The Volga (for Russia) where you can enjoy the wonders of these two wonderful countries.

OCEAN CRUISES

Crete

With over 650 miles of coastline, Crete is the biggest of the Greek islands and has an array of beautiful beaches and historical sights. To the east are the beaches of Lasithi, which are nearby the cosmopolitan towns of Elounda and Agios Nikolaos, perfect for soaking

up the sun followed by a spot of shopping and lunch. To the west, the Chania area has blue flag beaches and a historical old town; enjoy a bite to eat at one of its many al fresco restaurants, before visiting the Venetianbuilt Firkas Fortress which overlooks the harbour. With rural tavernas at every turn, many of which offer freshly caught seafood and excellent local wine, this is a destination that offers a real taste of village culture.

The world is your oyster – amazing destinations travelling on state of the art ships – the ultimate in luxury. If you have never cruised before, you can now take a sampler cruise for a couple of nights to see if you enjoy the experience! We are pretty certain you will. Life on the ocean wave really is an exhilarating experience – you can choose one of the smaller ships where luxury and personal service are second to none, or cruising for families, where great value for money can be had with deals for children travelling with adults. Many of the ships have Kids and Teenage clubs, featuring activities such as climbing walls, wave machines and many more so your kids are never bored!

Choose The Caribbean, Europe, the Mediterranean or the Far East, all of which are now at your fingertips.

CRUISING IS A DELIGHTFULLY AFFORDABLE OPTION – for expert advice and to get a quote call Spear Travels – specialists in cruising.

Nigel Slater’s Lamb Hotpot

Introduction

We’re getting to that time of the year when rustic food comes packed with extra appeal. Perhaps it’s the warmth, perhaps the fullness to see us through the winter months, or maybe we just want to treat ourselves when the weather outside is cold and inhospitable. Whatever it is, this lamb hotpot is simple to put together and a perfect cosy dinner for two on a cold day. Serve with some simple greens and you have something resembling perfection.

Ingredients

(serves six-eight)

• 4 thick lamb neck chops

• plain flour, for dredging

• good glug of fruity olive oil

• 3 onions, peeled and cut into wedges

• 2-3 large parsnips, peeled and cut into sixths

• 6 large, juicy garlic cloves, peeled, cut in half

• salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 6-8 fresh rosemary sprigs

• 6-8 small potatoes, cut in half

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/350°F/Gas mark 4.

2. Lightly dredge the lamb chops in the flour. Heat the oil in a shallow ovenproof

pan with a lid, then add the lamb chops and cook until browned on both sides. Remove the lamb from the pan and set aside. Add the onions, parsnips and garlic to the same pan and cook for 2-3 minutes. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and add the rosemary. dusting of icing sugar.

3. Return the lamb chops to the pan, tuck the potatoes around the chops, season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and pour in just

enough water to cover the pan contents. Cut out a circle of greaseproof paper the same size and shape as the inside of the pan. Place the paper circle over the lamb and vegetables, then cover the pan with the lid.

4. Cook in the preheated oven for an hour or so, until the meat is tender.

A Pawfect Year

New Year’s resolutions your beloved pooch will really appreciate.

The start of each year is the time when we make pledges to our own health and wellbeing for the months ahead, but as a valued member of the family, it’s important to ensure you don’t leave your delightful dog out of the equation!

ONE Walk the walk

Whether you’ve got shortlegged shih tzu or longlimbed lurcher, dogs need regular walks.

It’s not just about exercise, but also about maintaining mental stimulation as dogs explore their world through scents and rely on new fragrances in the same way you crave a new book or daily crossword. They also like to socialise and meet other four-legged pals. So, get the walk in.

Non-moulting breeds rely on regular trips to the groomers to maintain their luscious coats, but every dog needs a brush once in a while, not to mention claws being clipped and if you’re really conscientious, the occasional toothbrush.

water bowl in the dishwasher occasionally.

FIVE

Ensure you insure No-one likes to imagine anything bad happening to their beloved pet but having insurance in place will soften the blow of any sudden illness or accident.

THREE Buy the good grub

These days you can buy your best buddy all kinds of gourmet fare, but it isn’t necessary to spend a fortune if you don’t have the money.

With wet food, a high meat content is always preferable and a combination of this with dry meal is often a good way to keep your pups from an upset tummy. Carrots are a great snack occasionally along with good quality treats.

FOUR Be alert to bedding

Vet fees can be exorbitant, while insurance excess fees and monthly rates rise as your dog gets older, so insure when your dog is young if possible and maintain the policy for maximum peace of mind.

The same goes for vaccinations and other monthly medications that your poochie needs –from worming to tick and lungworm pills, prevention is always better than cure.

SIX

TWO Brush up on grooming

Your dog may run for cover at the mention of the word ‘bath’, but they’ll always look grateful afterwards.

Dogs get a bad rep when it comes to personal hygiene, but really it is us, their human companions, who are responsible for keeping them clean and happy. So wash their beds, replace their chew toys when they become too worn out, and throw their

Pledge

to

pet Petting pooches and generally showering your pup with love is proven to lower stress levels in both humans and canines alike.

So don’t be shy - let your dog know just how grateful you are to have them.

New Year, New Book!

This month, four books that will lead you into 2023.

A Nation of Shopkeepers: The Unstoppable rise of the Petite-Bourgeoisie by Daniel Evans

Lifting the lid on the UK’s modern class structure, Daniel Evans’ forthcoming book, A Nation of Shopkeepers: The Unstoppable Rise of the Petite-Bourgeoisie, focuses on the class of people existing between the working class and the bourgeoisie – those shopkeepers, small-time landlords and self-employed artisans who were expected to be swallowed up by monopoly capitalism, but who’ve actually grown in recent years. Referring to them as a “mysterious class”, he investigates what their seemingly unstoppable rise might mean for the Left.

You Are Not Alone by Cariad Lloyd

Cariad Lloyd losing her father at 15 inspired her awardwinning podcast, Griefcast, in which she talks to celebrities about navigating their own experiences of loss. In You Are Not Alone, the comedian and writer explores society’s reluctance to talk about death and its impact. Amid stories from those

she’s interviewed, including Stephen Mangan, Sara Pascoe, and Adam Buxton, are Lloyd’s own thoughts on therapy and friends as, amongst other things, she debunks ‘the five stages of grief’ in appraising loss and heartache in all its unexpected forms. Published by Bloomsbury on January 19th

8 Rules of Love by Jay Shetty Jay Shetty, author of the no.1 New York Times bestseller

Think Like a Monk, offers a revelatory guide to every stage of romance, drawing on ancient wisdom and new science.

Instead of presenting love as an ethereal concept or a collection of cliches, Shetty lays out specific, actionable steps to help you develop the skills to practise and nurture love better than ever before. He shares eight rules, each teaching and empowering, detailing how to win or lose together, how to define love, and why you don’t ‘break’ in a breakup, and more.

Look Both Ways by Linwood Barclay

The latest breakneck thriller from powerhouse writer Linwood Barclay introduces us to Sandra Montrose, who hasn’t been the same since her husband died after he fell asleep at the wheel of his car, leaving her a single mother to Archie and Katie.

When, in an experiment, the cars on Garrett Island are switched for driverless vehicles called Arrivals. Sandra is hesitant. Sure enough, as the day of the big reveal gets underway, a member of the press has gone missing and there are rumours of industrial sabotage.

Shortly afterwards, the sleek driverless cars stop taking orders. In fact, they have rules of their own and start targeting the trusting residents of Garrett Island.

Where do you hold stress in your body?

For many of us, we hold it in our shoulders, head, neck, and jaw.

Try these tips to help you relieve tension:

#1.

Posture

Make sure you are strengthening your postural muscles regularly, bringing your head back over your shoulders, shoulders over your hips – keeping a long, tall spine.

#2.

Regular Movement

Helps stretch and lengthen your body and spine to take pressure off your joints. You can do this throughout the day and before and after any further exercise, to help soften

the muscles that get tired after a long day.

#3. Work Space

The way you stand, sit, drive or even walk can be impacting your health in ways we can call, ‘difficult habits’. Our posture affects the way we breathe and our health. Osteopathy helps treat the underlying factors, such as the instability of the joints and the associated inflammation. Once the pain is reduced, specific exercises and specialised osteopathic techniques are utilised to achieve lasting relief.

Osteopathic Treatment that are available: Soft tissue techniques, manipulation and stretching

spine to correct the relevant area in the spine to reduce pain, as well as Cranial Osteopathy.

Lifestyle modifications; Improving posture and movement patterns to reduce stress on the body. Alongside Osteopathy, David provides:

• Prevention Advice

• Acupuncture

• Stretching and strengthening

• Exercise Prescription

• Postural retraining

• Ergonomic & Best Practice assistance

Osteopathy aims to solve pain; by diagnosing the cause, then using treatment to facilitate the balance of your tissues.

Best wishes, David

Hooray for Hedgehogs

They are the crowning jewels of the British countryside, but when it comes to conservation, hedgehogs aren’t out of the woods just yet.

In 2011 the first State of Britain’s Hedgehogs report highlighted the findings of several surveys that pointed to a widespread loss of our iconic and loveable hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) over the previous 10 years. In 2020, hedgehogs were put on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as vulnerable to extinction in Great Britain. A decade on from the original report, it is worth bearing in mind that estimating the number of hedgehogs nationally with a high level of certainty is not but scarce, presenting practical challenges in finding them. What does seem to be apparent though, is that hedgehogs in urban

areas have been increasing.

Most counts are from builtup places, often on public grassland such as playing fields and parks. The population of hedgehogs in gardens and other urban green spaces may be around 200,000-250,000, which suggests conservation efforts in these areas have been effective. This includes the creation of so-called ‘hedgehog highways’ – tunnels created between gardens –along with encouraging other hog habitats and wild areas in which they can thrive.

• It’s possible to make or buy a hedgehog home that acts as a safe hibernation site in the winter, and consider a secluded nesting box for a mother and her hoglets in summer.

• If you find a hedgehog you are concerned about, avoid picking it up as this may traumatise it, and instead call The National Hedgehog Society, or your local animal rescue centre for advice.

• Always check bonfire piles for hedgehogs just before you burn them.

Sadly, the news is less positive in rural areas. Data from three surveys, shows a falling population trend.

HOME HOGS

So, what can we do to help?

• Offer good quality hedgehog food, such as meaty cat or dog food, cat biscuits and water for them, especially in the run up to hibernation when they need to build up fat reserves to successfully make it through to the dry weather.

• Dispose of litter responsibility as hedgehogs can become trapped in discarded tins and wrappers.

• Build hog highways between gardens and make sure ponds have a slope as an exit.

• Take care on the roadshedgehogs are nocturnal so are out at night. A hedgehog’s natural defence mechanism is to roll into a ball, but this is no match for a vehicle.

Beat the January blues

Now that the highs of the festive season have come to an end, we find ourselves in the dreary throes of January. We’re back to the old routine and the days are cold, wet and miserable, which leaves many of us feeling down.

Thankfully there are ways to beat the January blues and get the happy hormones flowing.

Get outside and get moving Being in the great outdoors and around nature is an instant mood booster and stress reliever.

By taking things up a notch and exercising in the fresh air, it’s proven to improve self-esteem and energy and heighten serotonin levels. Why not give your garden a quick spruce up or even start planning your spring and summer beds?

Or go for a long walk in the countryside, a brisk stroll into town or take a cycle through our beautiful towns and villages.

Just getting outside in the natural light will make you feel great.

Brighten your home with fresh flowers

Not only do fresh flowers brighten your home, but they also lift your mood and ignite creativity.

medicinal herb for hundreds of years to aid digestion and also alleviate headaches. Just one sniff of its powerful scent is enough to invigorate and relax you.

Lavender helps eliminate nervous tension and is great for getting a more restful night sleep. Bring a few cuttings into the house to get that fresh, natural fragrance, add it to cakes or biscuit recipes or try making homemade lavender scented candles or soaps.

Having fresh flowers in your home has been linked to a reduction in anxiety and blood pressure and an increase in positivity.

Multiple studies prove that the colour, smell and act of giving flowers have a healing effect on recepients as they have an immediate impact on happiness.

Make someone’s day and give them a bunch of fresh flowers!

Rosemary has a host of benefits, including stress and anxiety relief, improved focus and memory, appetite stimulation, plus it has anti-inflammatory and painrelieving properties. Add it to your cooking, butter, oils and salts or create a new flavoured tipple by adding it to water along with lemons. However you choose to beat the January blues, you can find what you need at Hartwell Nurseries.

Happy gardening and Happy New Year.

Wycombe Homeless Connection

Wycombe Homeless Connection is a charity that serves people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in south Buckinghamshire.

A member of the public called our homelessness helpline about Sara who was sleeping rough and didn’t know where to turn for help.

Thankfully, Sara was told to turn to Wycombe Homeless Connection. Within a few hours, she was in our Support Centre, eating hot food and in dry clothes. We knew it was too dangerous for Sara to spend one more night on the street to be ‘verified’. That’s the process of being witnessed sleeping rough by an official from the council to qualify

for emergency accommodation.

We paid for a hotel so Sara could be safe and sleep. We booked her in for a checkup with a GP and helped her start looking for a home for good. We will walk with Sara for as long as she needs.

Alongside winter emergency accommodation, we offer hope and help to people in housing crisis all year round. We need your help to make sure we can offer our vital life-saving support and advice to those most in need. Please give to our winter appeal: https://wyhoc.org.uk/winterappeal2022

From Bourne End station turn left along the main road to the roundabout and then left again along the High Street. When you see a filling station on the opposite side of a road to your right, turn left down Wharf Lane. Follow this road to the Thames Path, taking care when crossing the railway.

2. Turn right along it, go under the railway bridge and past the junction with Trafford Road.

1. Turn right along the towpath, go past the marina and the Upper Thames Sailing Club, continuing to Spade Oak Meadow.

2. Keep straight ahead alongside the river until you reach a kissing gate.

3. Continue ahead up the lane past Gipsy House on the right, formerly the home of Roald Dahl. At the top of the hill, follow the surfaced lane past Angling Spring Farm and onwards as it becomes an unsurfaced track. Follow it for a further 240m to a gate on the right just before the track starts to descend.

3. Go through the gate and turn right along the hedge, cross over the railway (with care) which will bring you to Spade Oak Lake.

footpath on the right.

4. Turn right through the gate and stay in the same direction along the top of the wood for 300m to enter a field.

4. Keep straight ahead (or follow the permissive footpath to the right and along the edge of the lake which will give you better views). Carry on until you reach a surfaced lane and stay ahead towards Little Marlow (well worth exploring). Just about 100m after a row of cottages on the left, look for a

5. Keep straight ahead along the field edge to a gate, go through it and the next one onto a lane. Turn left to a road and then right along the verge for 90m to a gate opposite New Road.

5. Take this footpath and walk along the edge of the field. Soon you go over two footbridges, then turn right in field and cross the access road again. Shortly after entering the 2nd field, turn right at a waymark post along a path towards the lake, cross a footbridge and turn left alongside the lake. After 600m, turn left over a footbridge and through a gate. Cross the field and past the next gate to a lane and the Spade Oak pub.

6. Turn right through the gate and along the path into a field. The route now stays in the same direction all the way down to the edge of Great Missenden. Go down the middle of the field to a gate at the entrance to Angling Spring Wood. Go through the gate and straight down the main path to leave the wood at a gate into a field. Continue to descend to a gate at the bottom.

6. Turn right past pub and left along Upper Thames Way.

7. Stay ahead over the railway to the river and turn left to return to Bourne End station.

7. Do not go through, instead bear diagonally left on a fenced path to reach a stony lane. Turn left and walk along to the main road. Turn right over the railway bridge to finish at the station.
