Editors Letter Welcome to the March (Spring – we hope!!) issue of Village View magazine.

We are delighted to be able to continue our series of articles about local places to visit with a piece on P20 about Waddesdon Manor and their fantastic Tulip Festival in April, I shall certainly be going along to have a look at the fabulous display. Our thanks to Waddesdon for the lovely front cover picture, I am sure we are all looking forward to seeing those spring colours.

We recently welcomed a young lady on ‘work experience’ to join us here at Chiltern Directories for a week. As you will read in her article on P 52 none of us were quite sure what to expect!! It was a hugely positive experience for all of us and we are so pleased that she enjoyed working on the magazines. It was very refreshing to have some younger eyes and ears in the office and she has certainly given us some new ideas, thank you Emily and good luck for everything you do in the future.

Recipe

Lemon Chicken with Tabbouleh This is a great way to turn simple and very economical chicken portions into a delicious Mediterranean-style supper. If you have time, make the tabbouleh a few hours in advance to let the flavours fully develop.

Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes Ingredients 1 lemon, thinly sliced 4 large chicken thigh portions (or 8 small thigh portions) 4 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp clear honey, warmed 225g bulgar wheat (see tip) ½ cucumber, finely diced 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 2 tbsp fresh chopped mint 2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander Salt and freshly ground black pepper

3 Meanwhile, place the bulgar wheat into a bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Leave for 30 minutes until grains are soft. Stir well and drain off any excess water.

1 Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. Push a lemon slice under the skin of each chicken thigh. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken over a medium-high heat until golden brown all over. Transfer to a shallow roasting tin and arrange the rest of the lemon slices around the chicken.

2 Mix together 1 tbsp of the lemon juice with the honey and pour over the chicken. Roast for 20-25 minutes until cooked through.

4 Stir in the rest of the olive oil and lemon juice and season with plenty of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cucumber, spring onions, mint and coriander and mix well. Serve the hot roast chicken on the tabbouleh with any juices from the roasting tin poured over.

TIP Bulgar wheat is a type of wheat grain that has been parboiled, dried then finely crushed. It is similar to couscous but has more texture and bite. You’ll find it in most large supermarkets or health food shops.

Great Local Days Out Waddesdon Manor

Waddesdon Manor reopens on Wednesday 27th March for 2013, with some interesting events and exhibitions to look forward to for the new season.

Treasures from the ecclesiastical textiles collection will be on display, and in the Dining Room from June Spanish artist Joan Sallas will Tulip Festival, Waddesdon Manor ©National Trust, Waddesdon Manor be producing photo : Derek Pelling some astonishing recreations of 17th and 18th century table sculptures using only folded linen. Due to popular demand, the Fantasy from the Fire Maiolica exhibition will also remain in place for another season.

The contemporary theme continues in the gardens for 2013 with some striking outdoor light installations by artist Bruce Munro, starting with Cantus Arcticus which will be installed in the Coach House at the Stables in March.

Inspired by a piece of music of the same name,

by Rautavaara, Cantus Arcticus is comprised of 15 abstract bird forms rendered in slender glass tubes occupying the Coach House floor. Light will cascade from above each piece, casting soft pools that change colour in response to Rautavaara’s music, which will be playing in the space.

of the textile collections in store, where she unearthed light-damaged pincushions, darns, mends and labels on domestic linen, and explored the intricate workings of the backs of tapestries and embroideries.

Extending the theme of the taking the exhibitions inside the Manor into the gardens, from June the summer carpet bedding on the Parterre will also reflect a feminine collection, Baroness Edmond de Rothschild’s 17th and 18th-century lace.

For families, Waddesdon is delighted to team up with the National Trust and Cadbury again this Easter and will be offering a fun trail around the gardens, giant games, and face painting from Friday 29th March – Monday 1st April inclusive.

The ever popular De Jager Tulip Festival also returns for 2013, from 13th – 28th April, and features a dazzling array of tulips on the Parterre.

Keep an eye on the Waddesdon Manor website (details below) where we will post regular updates on when the tulips are flowering and at their best.

A new permanent piece for the collection will also be unveiled this year: Xavier Veilhan’s striking red horses and carriage, “Le Carosse”, a version of which has previously been shown at Château de Versailles, will be installed in front of the Manor.

Time to check the Guttering The wet (and snowy) weather has created a lot of damp issues over the last few months. We have seen several cases of damp migrating through walls, mainly caused by blocked gutters or down pipes.

It’s time to be taking a look to see if any gutter repairs or clearance is needed.

Check for the tell tale signs of gutters overflowing in normal rainfall, usually damp patches below gutters, next to down pipes or a fascia.

The weight of snow often damages guttering, particularly if fixings were loose in the first place.

Look for sagging along the gutter line, which should be straight with a few degrees of fall to the down pipe. If there are problems they are best addressed sooner rather than later. If it’s just clearing-out that’s needed there are gutter vacuum tools that can do the job without having Its easy to be in

to climb up. If there are loose brackets then the chances are the fascia has seen better days.

This will require an inspection to check for rotting wood.

If you think you have a blocked down pipe it is most likely be near the top where it connects to the gutter. Debris builds up on the bends.

With plastic guttering this is easily cleaned by removing the connecting pipe work immediately below the gutter and shaking any debris out.

Alternatively a stiff wire pushed down from the top will do the job.

Creature Comforts ‘Hang spring cleaning!’ cries Mole in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. The critters are emerging from hibernation, and so are we. We’ve picked a selection of the best novels where animals are calling the shots.

What better way to welcome in the warmer weather, than with some tales from the riverbank… and beyond?

Watership Down by Richard Adams Fiver can sense impending doom. Something very bad is coming to the rabbit warren and fleeing is the only way to save the clan. His brother Hazel knows that Fiver is never wrong and so they embark on the journey of a lifetime to find sanctuary at Watership Down. Crammed full of amazing rabbit folklore, myths, legends and even their own language of ‘Lapine’, we become totally immersed in Fiver and Hazel’s world, carried along on this amazing and perilous journey across southern England. War Horse by Michael Morpurgo Based on the true story of a horse named ‘Warrior’, War Horse follows the tale of Joey, a young mount who is sold to the cavalry for service in the First World War and the attempts of his previous owner Albert to bring him home safely. But Albert isn’t old enough to enlist and so sets off under his own steam to try and find his beloved Joey. It’s an amazing story of bravery and friendship, set against the bloodiest of backdrops and you can’t help but gallop alongside the intrepid pair.

Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White Wilbur really is ‘some pig’ and it’s up to a spider named Charlotte to tell the world. Bashful and whimsical Wilbur is horrified to learn that he’s facing the chop.

His human protector, Fern, might not be able to save him all on her own and it looks like it’s up to the barn’s resident arachnid to save his bacon. Can Charlotte convince the farmer that Wilbur really is worth hanging onto; how can a spider be that persuasive? Ok, so the clue is in the title but this is PAGE 42

a thoroughly charming tale that will have you laying off the sausages, and letting the cobwebs hang around a bit longer, way after you’ve put the book down.

Animal Farm by George Orwell Originally subtitled ‘A Fairy Story’, this was Orwell’s allegory for events leading up to the Russian Revolution and not a light and fluffy bedtime story for children after all. It tackles greed and corruption, injustice and pig-ignorance, if you’ll pardon the pun. Revolution is in the air at Manor Farm when the drunken layabout of a farmer, Mr Jones, forgets to feed his animals.

Pigs Napoleon and Snowball lead the rebellion and bring power to all those on four legs. But in time, the uprising takes an unexpected downturn.

Remember: ‘All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others’.

White Fang by Jack London Set in Canada during the gold rush at the end of the 1800s, White Fang is the story of a half dog-half wolf hybrid puppy and his attempts to find his place in the world. It’s an epic story of survival, with White Fang struggling against the violent backdrop of the Yukon Territory and then the equally menacing and threatening life that awaits him as he is adopted by American Indian Grey Beaver and attempts to live as a domesticated canine. White Fang’s new life is just as brutal, as he fails to be accepted by other young dogs and so reverts to being the ‘lone wolf’, detached and isolated in the frozen wastelands.

by Garth Stein Another dog has his day now and this time it’s Enzo who wants to be reincarnated as a human; he believes in the Mongolian legend that a dog ‘who is prepared’ will come back as a man. Diary of a 15 year old ‘future journalist´

When I got my placement at Chiltern Directories, my initial thought was “I’m going to be the 15 year old equivalent of Ugly Betty!”

I mentally prepared myself for hours of filing, admin and making coffee. Instead I was treated like an adult. I felt completely at ease for the entire week. Sadly, I wasn’t asked to make any coffee.

Throughout the week, I was trusted with jobs such as proof reading the last issue, labelling envelopes, setting Coralie a million and one tasks for the following Monday and even writing my own articles for this issue. By the end of the week, I felt at ease around my co-workers and had achieved a lot more than I had anticipated. I learnt about the magazine running and editing as well as researching and sourcing possible new clients. In my feature article on Lt Clyde Cosper (in Princes Risborough View magazine), I had to get in touch with a company in Florida to get copyright

permission for the photo. This was the most challenging and rewarding part of the week as it involved a fair amount of negotiating and emailing over the following week or so but I personally feel the final photo was worth the effort.

Since leaving work experience, I have been in regular contact with Coralie and am currently running the Facebook and Twitter pages for Chiltern Directories, allowing me to continue with a company which became so important to me in such a short space of time.

The week itself was a fantastic experience where I learnt a lot about working life but also things about myself that I didn’t know. I’m really thankful to Coralie, Jan and Debbie for allowing me to (hopefully positively) input into something they work so hard for and I look forward to working more with them all in the future.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church Stokenchurch Things are going to be changing at St Peter and St Paul’s Church.

In December we received planning permission and the agreement of the Diocesan Advisory Committee to begin our re-ordering and development. In January we appointed a main contractor, and we are looking forward to the works beginning at the end of February.

If you haven’t heard already the church is being extensively re-ordered – with the addition of a kitchen, vestry and balcony – and the well-worn pews and rotten pew platforms are being replaced by a level platform and modern oak seating.

The church room is also being extended and an additional disabled toilet is being added as well as a lot of much-needed additional storage. If you want to find out more the plans are currently on display at the back of the church. The works are due to begin at the end of February and are scheduled to last for five months. During this time the church will be closed and we will not be able to host any services there until the works have been completed. You will still be able to access the churchyard from Church Street and there will be signs telling you which is the safest route.

Throughout this period we have accepted the invitation of the Methodist Church in Stokenchurch to worship with them. We will be there every Sunday, worshipping with them, at 9:30 in the morning. In addition we will continue to run our 8 am Communion service on the second Sunday of the month and will be having our weekly Communion service at 9:30 on a Thursday morning. We will also be able to use the Methodist church for any Baptisms, Weddings or Funerals that may arise in this time. We are really grateful for their kind invitation and are so looking forward to worshipping with them.

In the months that follow we will also keep you updated as to how the works are going and tell you more about what we are planning on doing to re-open our church building later this year.

Members can avail themselves of very attractive prices for seeds, compost and other garden needs from the Store on the Stokenchurch allotments. The store is open from 10am - 12noon on Saturdays from 2nd March, and on Sunday mornings through April. The Association will have a presence at the Village Fete in June and at the September Show, and intends to organise a visit to the RHS gardens at Wisley.
