Editors’ Letter Welcome to the March/April issue of Chiltern View Villages I love this time of year and hope that our front cover is truly representative of spring (I have to be optimistic, as I write this at the beginning of February and can only see thick fog from my window!). It is a lovely time of year but can be somewhat unpredictable – just when the spring flowers have poked their heads up, they can be blitzed by snow and gales. We have some great advice for gardeners from Askett Nurseries (P50) to help you get to grips with your garden again once winter has passed (they have a great coffee shop as well as a wide selection of plants!). We also have a few excellent ideas for gifts (books) for Mother’s Day (March 26th), a refreshing change from flowers or chocolates! It is definitely a time for renewal, new plans for holidays, homes and gardens and here at Chiltern View we strive hard to help with those plans. We have many advertisers, with a wide range of skills and products – but all LOCAL – all here to help you realise your plans for renewal. Until next time….

Health Matters

Arm Pain - tennis & golfers elbow

pain in the elbow is often due to two main conditions – tennis elbow & golfers elbow, the complaints are often not caused by tennis or golf! Tennis elbow causes pain & tenderness around the outside of the elbow joint, whereas golfer’s elbow causes pain around the inner side of the joint. Tennis elbow is more common than golfers elbow & both are injuries from repetitive overuse or wear and tear from any hobby, sport or activity not just tennis or golf as the name implies. Sometimes a single injury such as a

sudden unexpected tug on the forearm can cause the symptoms. Once the pain starts, your normal activities & habits can maintain the problem. Pre-existing problems with your neck, wrist or shoulder, that might not be painful in themselves, can make it more likely for you to suffer with tennis or golfers elbow. Most cases ease naturally eventually, but many people seek treatment & advice from an osteopath, as limb use compensation creates pain.

OSTEOPATH DAVID GRAY

How can Treatment help with Arm Pain? • David can use a variety of different mobilisation & manipulation techniques, including acupuncture. To ease your symptoms, get to the cause of the problem & get you back to your normal life style. He may gently manipulate the elbow, wrist, neck & upper back joints. • He may offer you advice on which activities & movements to avoid, advice on specific exercises, rehabilitation advice & appropriate elbow brace support or sports strapping. Why do we change the clocks? It’s time to turn the clocks forward an hour at 1am on 26th March. This time, when sunrise and sunset are one hour later on the clock, is known as British Summer Time, or Daylight Saving Time. It is believed that the concept was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 in an essay entitled; ‘An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light.’ Ancient civilisations had already been adopting similar concepts however, by adjusting their routines in accordance with the sun’s schedules. The first official modern use of Daylight Saving Time was in Ontario in 1908, and several other Canadian cities followed. At around the same time MP Robert Pearce proposed a bill in the House of Commons based on work done by British builder William Willett around moving the clocks eight times a year to achieve similar results. This was rejected. Germany became the first European country to introduce Daylight Saving Time in April 1916. Its rationale was that the use of artificial light would be reduced and thus there would be more fuel for the war effort. Britain followed shortly after in May 1916. Daylight Saving Time is now utilised in over 70 countries world wide although dates of implementation and clock adjustments vary. The main benefits of Daylight Saving Time are said to be: • The opportunity to make better use of natural daylight • The ability to conserve energy that would otherwise be used on artificial light • A decrease in road accidents because roads are naturally lit during the time when most vehicles are using them. 28

Some studies such as one carried out by the Belfast Telegraph also claim that the extra hour of daylight means that tourists stay out longer and spend more money - an extra £6.34 million in Northern Ireland alone. Some are not in favour though. For example, traditional dairy farmers claim Daylight Saving Time disrupts milking routines. This mainly affects developing countries as elsewhere milking is automated. Some research has also shown that there is a greater risk of people having accidents or being the victims of crime because they leave their houses in the morning when it’s still dark. Some studies have suggested that in the first few days after the clocks go forward there are more heart attacks too. Finally for those of us who struggle to remember when we turn the clocks forward and when they go back, this little phrase may help: ‘Spring Forward, Fall Back,’ as the time when clocks go back always happens in the Autumn. This year in the UK, the date when Greenwich Mean Time will begin again is 29th October. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue

Dog of the Month Hello, my name is Dolly, I’m about 6 years old and am a Staffordshire Bull Terrier Type. I’m a wonderful girl and I’m looking for owners that will provide some direction for me. I’ve had little training so I’m looking for owners that are prepared to attend training classes with me. This will help me to build a bond with my new owners, but also provide stimulation and teach me some manners as I can be quite full on at times! I absolutely adore people and love to cover them with lots of kisses, however I’m a little too enthusiastic when doing so at times. Unfortunately I’m not good with other dogs but maybe able to get on with a cat and any children ideally need to be 12 years and over. I’ll need to live with people who are experienced with Bullies, so they can get the best out of me. I’m currently on a diet as I need to lose around 5kg. It’s important that new owners continue to help me lose weight and build up my exercise gradually. Once fit, I should be able to do 2+ hours of exercise a day – this

32

is important for me as I have so much energy to burn off. My current carers would like me to go to a home with a reasonable sized garden, as it will be a while before I can go off lead on walks. In the right home, I will make a truly wonderful, fun and loving addition to a household. If you are interested in offering Dolly or any of our dogs a home, please visit us. We are open every day except Thursdays between 2pm and 4pm for viewing. www.stokenchurchrescue.org.uk 01494 482695

St Patrick’s Day: Friday 17th March an American invention?

Shamrocks, leprechauns and gallons of Guinness – St Patrick’s Day is nearly here. But why has this saint’s day become so popular? And who was Saint Patrick? Well, it may surprise you to hear that Saint Patrick (or Padraig to use the Irish spelling) wasn’t actually Irish. He’s believed to have been born to Roman parents, in Scotland or Wales, in the fifth century AD. At the age of 16, Patrick was captured and taken to Ireland to live as a slave. For six years, he herded sheep on Slemish Mountain, until he managed to escape and flee Ireland. A dream led Patrick to dedicate his life to converting people to Christianity. He returned to Ireland and began to spread his message. Today, St Patrick is regarded as the founder of Christianity in Ireland. It’s believed that St Patrick’s Day was first celebrated back in the 17th century. Held to mark St Patrick’s death, it was a humble, religious celebration up until the 1920s. An annual military parade started in Dublin in 1931, but the day remained mainly a time for religious reflection, rather than painting oneself green and donning a funny hat. Bars were even closed on St Patrick’s Day, as a mark of respect, right up until the 1960s. Across the pond, in America, it was a different matter. There St Patrick’s Day became a day for Irish immigrants to celebrate their heritage. By the mid-19th century, parades and festivities were being held in major cities across the US. According to author and university professor Mike Cronin, ‘St. Patrick’s Day was a public declaration of a hybrid identity—a belief in the future of Ireland as a nation free from British rule, and a strict adherence to the values and liberties that the U.S. offered them.’

38

In the 20th century, corporations started to pay attention, and figure out how to take advantage of the celebrations. Pretty soon, T-shirts with embroidered shamrocks, inflatable bottles of Guinness, and even green McDonald’s milkshakes, started to become synonymous with St Patrick’s Day, at least in America. As with most American exports, some of these products have now become popular in the UK (though not, thankfully, green milkshakes), and in other countries across the globe. St Patrick’s Day is now celebrated in pubs, shops and student halls across the world. This year, Greening the City will see iconic landmarks across Ireland, from Trinity College, to Donegal Castle, go green on 17th March. If you’re lucky enough to be heading to Ireland for St Patrick’s Day this year, you’ll certainly have plenty of choices for where to celebrate. Gifts for Mum Looking for the perfect present for Mother’s Day? Maybe we can help… Paris for One and Other Stories – Jojo Moyes

These 11 short stories are filled with romance, humour and charm. As we’ve come to expect from Moyes, great plots and believable characters make this a really enjoyable read. The title story follows Nell as she finds herself alone in Paris and has to break out of her comfort zone. Perfect for mums who sometimes only have 10 minutes to relax with a book and a cuppa.

Planet Earth II – Stephen Moss

Millions tuned in to watch David Attenborough reveal some of the most spectacular natural wonders the Earth has to offer. If your mum was one of them, she’ll love this book. With 250 stunning photographs and commentary on the habitats and animals featured in the TV series, Planet Earth II may well find a prized position on the bookcase for years to come.

Hide and Seek – M. J. Arlidge

If Mum’s into crime fiction, Hide and Seek could be a good choice. DI Helen Grace is serving time in Holloway for a series of murders she didn’t commit. When one of her cell mates is brutally murdered, suspicion turns to Helen. Can she find the real killer before she gets the blame, and before she becomes the next victim? Gripping.

From the Heart – Susan Hill

A poignant coming of age novel, From the Heart is set at a time when many of the 42

freedoms we now take for granted could cost you dearly. Olive wants to be free to follow her heart. But an unplanned pregnancy gives her an almost impossible choice – marry a man she doesn’t love, or give up her baby. Beautifully written, and painfully emotive, this is a book to devour in one evening.

Gino’s Hidden Italy: How to cook like a true Italian – Gino D’Acampo

If a new cookbook is on her wishlist, this TV programme tie-in should prove a winner. 80 authentic Italian recipes are included, many of which are local specialities or traditional dishes with a Gino twist. Recipes are straightforward to follow, with dishes such as Baked Salmon with a Pistachio, Honey and Herb Crust, and Stuffed Lake Como Pie.

Elizabeth: The Forgotten Years – John Guy

John Guy is one of the most respected Tudor historians of our times. Here he reveals aspects of Elizabeth I’s later life previously lost in time. Painstakingly researched, the biography includes extracts from numerous letters from Elizabeth herself and details of both her private and public life. A must for fans of historical biographies. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk

Views of the Vale Walk, Wendover Wendover Woods Walk

Walk lengths: circular routes of 3.5 (Coombe Hill) or 7 miles (Wendover Woods) Starting Point: Both walks start at Wendover railway station These two walks take you to the top of the Chiltern Hills, through ancient beech woods, carpets of bluebells and wildflowers. There are amazing views of the Aylesbury Vale and Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country home. You might also see rare birds such as red kites and firecrests and the tiny muntjac deer. The Coombe Hill walk takes you across fields and then gently up through the woods to Low Scrubs, a special area of ancient woodland with a fascinating atmosphere. The beech trees here used to be coppiced for firewood and now look quite sculptural. The route takes you out on to chalk downland and the iconic Coombe Hill monument, a memorial to the men of Buckinghamshire who fell in the Boer War. From here there are panoramic views across the Aylesbury Vale. Drop down through Bacombe Hill nature reserve back to Wendover. Access Information: A moderate walk with some stiles and kissing gates.

Uphill for about 1 mile. Paths muddy after rain. The Wendover Woods walk starts gently along the Ridgeway National Trail before entering Wendover Woods, a 325 hectare open access woodland site managed by the Forestry Commission. The site has waymarked trails, café and is one of the highest points in the Chilterns. There is archaeological interest in the form of Boddington hillfort and lots of wildlife interest. Around May time the woods are carpeted in bluebells, and in the autumn the beech trees turn a magnificent gold. Access Information: There are no stiles on this route. A mile of the route is considerably uphill. Refreshments There are lots of cafes and pubs in Wendover itself. In Wendover Woods there is a café. New for 2017, the Chilterns Walking Festival invites people to explore the landscapes, locations and legends of The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The spring festival runs from 15th – 29th May, with an exciting programme of walks, talks and special events. Grab some comfy walking shoes and choose

Coombe Hill Nationall from a programme of over 70 hikes, guided tours and special events. Take the train for a walk, take a boat for a walk – revisit old favourites and discover new ones, with daily events the choice is yours. For more information go to www.visitchilterns. co.uk/walkingfest or find us on Facebook at ChilternsWalkingFestival. Coombe Hill Walk Distance: 3 miles, allow 1½ to 2 hours. Difficulty: Paths may be muddy after ar in. Uphill for about 1 mile. Access Information: This walk has 3 stiles, 4 kissing gates and narrow paths. It also involves a steady uphill climb .

Description of route: Leave Wendover railway station and walk up to the main road. Turn right and then cross the road and over the bridge. Just after the end of the bridge take the footpath on the left. Go over two stiles and then follow the path acr oss the field to another stile.

Wendover Woods Walk

Turn right uphill along the lane. After about 80 metres turn left following the bridleway between gar dens and across the field. Do not go over the stile but turn right through the metal gate. Follow this path uphill for just over ½ mile.

The Ridgeway drops down (via steps) to meet a bridleway in a sunken lane. Turn 90 degrees left here (leaving the Ridgeway) and after some 40 metr es take a public footpath to the right. Follow this well waymarked path uphill thr ough the wood until it meets a wider stony track. Turn right along this track and follow it, climbing gently. At a fork of tr acks take the right (upper) one which brings you to the W endover Woods main car park.

Distance: 7 miles, allow 3½ to 4 hours. Difficulty: Uphill for about 2 miles. Access Information: There are no stiles or kissing gates on this route. About a mile of the section from Wendover to The Hale is considerably uphill. There is an All Ability Trail suitable for wheelchairs near Wendover Woods main car park.

Follow the tarmac road to the left (the café is ahead of you where you meet the road, if you wish to take refreshment) and turn left to follow a wide track for ½ mile, which passes picnic areas with barbecues. Keep straight on at a sign for Boddington Bank viewpoint. After 300 metr es there is a piece of fitness equipment (part of the fitness trail): do not turn left here – go straight on and follow the track downhill. You will eventually meet another track, turn right and join this track, continuing downhill. Then carry str aight on until you reach the road at the bottom.

Description of route: At the top of the hill turn right onto a well surfaced bridleway. After about 140 metres you will cross a private drive and the path ahead divides; take the right-hand path (the footpath). After about 180 metres turn left at a waymark post along a footpath through the wood. Follow this path until another waymark is reached, indicating a T-junction of public footpaths. Turn right here and keep going straight ahead until another waymark post iseached r (after about 230 metres), where you turn left and follow the path through a dark section of wood to emerge at a National Trust car park. Continue straight ahead to a wooden gate, and take the left-hand of two signed public footpaths. Just after the path begins to drop downhill, turn right onto the Ridgeway path, giving superb views over the Chequer s Estate and the Aylesbury Vale. Continue to the Coombe Hill Monument. From the Monument continue along the hilltop to the right, following The Ridgeway National rail, T passing a black Ridgeway waymark post (visible fr om the monument) and through the kissing gates across the bridleway. Keep straight ahead downhill, eventually thr ough a kissing gate to the road. Take care crossing the road. Turn right and follow the road downhill back to Wendover Station.

Leave Wendover railway station by the road and turn left past the Shoulder of Mutton pub.Continue along Wendover High Street past the shops. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and continue down the High Street. Just after the last shop turn right onto a footpath (signposted “Ridgeway”), which passes thr ough a park alongside a stream – continue to follow “Ridgeway” signs.

Turn right and follow the road back to Wendover (please take care if walking on the road). At the junction turn right and after 50m take the path between houses on your left.

Go straight on, following The Ridgeway Nationalrail T signs (which are waymarked with an acorn symbol) past the lake and church and along the road. At the crossroads go straight across, up Hogtrough Lane.

This brings you back to the park at the start of the walk. Follow the stream and then on to the Heron Path to come out on the High Street by the Clock Tower.

Continue to follow The Ridgeway, which forks left after Boswell's Farm into woodland. Follow this forest trail for over 1 mile gently uphill. You will eventually cross Hale Road and enter Wendover Woods.

Turn left and walk back up the High Street to the rail station.

so here we are again, at the beginning of another gardening season. Spring is here, and now we can get on with all those tasks that we planned during the cold short days of Winter. If you’ve been looking at that evergreen shrub for the last few months and have come to the conclusion that it’s just not in the right place, there is still time to move it. There is always a risk moving a shrub, and indeed that increases with bigger and older specimens, but if you dig deep causing as little root damage as possible, then replant in a well-watered and fertilised spot, keep going with the water on a regular basis, then all should be well. Sometimes, if the shrub just has to go, whether it’s got too big for its boots and is either blocking a view or smothering other plants, you’ve not got much to lose. Now is the time to tackle those Cornus (Dogwood) and Salix (Willow). These varieties will thank you for a good prune at this time of year. They are mostly grown for their colourful Winter stems, and to keep them doing their

50

job next year, it pays to clip last season’s growth back hard. This will encourage fresh new stems that will give you a blaze of colour again from November onwards.

the weather. We can still get some sharp frosts at this time of year, so if you have planted them out, have some horticultural fleece close by to protect your crop overnight.

Take a look at your herbaceous hardy perennials. They will be popping their heads up after being dormant, and if they’ve been in your garden for a few years, may well be looking overgrown and rootbound. To regenerate them, and get some new free plants, carefully lift and divide them. Using two forks back to back is the simplest way of getting them out of the soil, then use a sharp spade or a garden knife to cut them into sections. Pop a few back into your plot, then pot on what you have left. There you are - free plants! If your friends do the same thing, why not set up a little plant swap shop?

In early Spring, the weather really can try to fool a gardener into thinking that all the bad weather is behind us. We can have a few lovely warm days and it seems as if we’ve turned the corner, then 24 hours later we can be under snow! So, do beware, don’t get too impatient and start to think about planting out your tender annuals and vegetable plants. You can’t beat nature - don’t plant anything tender out until early May at the very earliest!

We’re getting close to seed potato and onion set time, but do keep a close eye on

See you soon, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Mother’s Day This year we celebrate Mother’s Day on 26 March. You may not realise, but Mother’s Day happens on the fourth Sunday of Lent and originally had religious traditions attached to it. In the sixteenth century, it was a celebration of the ‘mother church’ and people would return to the church in which they were baptised or where they attended as a child. Thus families would be reunited. This was known as going ‘a mothering’ or Mothering Sunday. It was commonplace for the Lent fast which prohibited sweet, rich foods and meat to be lifted a little and for a Simnel cake to be shared. Years later, youngsters working as servants were given an annual day off to visit their mothers and would take gifts. This was called ‘Mothers Day.’ 52

The celebrations of Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day have generally combined into one annual occasion. The first official Mother’s Day was organised by Ann Jarvis in 1908 in West Virginia as a memorial to her mum. By the 1920’s however Ann had become disillusioned by the commercialism of the day and especially the common use of printed greetings cards. Celebrating the day became less popular. It wasn’t until the second World War when soldiers wanted to acknowledge their distant mothers, that the day grew in popularity once more. Tinnitus

A common symptom of many hearing and ear conditions is tinnitus. Tinnitus is the term meaning sounds or noises that come from inside your body or head rather than from an outside source. Tinnitus can often be more distressing than the actual condition that it is a symptom of. This was certainly the case for Nikki Magrath, who suffered sudden, devastating hearing loss over the course of a weekend. The tinnitus that was a symptom of the damage to the inner ear, was by far the worse element of the whole episode. Tinnitus is nearly always accompanied by hearing loss, and wearing hearing devices certainly seems to help manage the effect of the symptom whilst wearing them. Hearing aids enhance the sounds you want to hear, such as speech and general environmental noises, this in turn lessens the effect of the tinnitus.

What causes tinnitus?

There are many causes of tinnitus. The most common is damage to the inner ear - the cochlea. If there is damage somewhere in the auditory system the brain can try to fill the space with ‘noise’. Damage to the inner ear can occur from exposure to noise, such as going to a very loud music event or gun fire. Sometimes certain prescription drugs cause tinnitus as a side effect. If your outer ear is blocked with wax, this can sometimes make you very aware of tinnitus, as you are no longer hearing everyday environmental noises. Changes in blood flow such as high blood pressure can cause tinnitus and as a result the tinnitus can sometimes be an early warning sign of more serious conditions.

Tinnitus is a complex issue and there is no one miracle cure for the symptoms. The best approach is to offer a personalised support service, a safe place to talk and share Tinnitus is very closely linked to emotional frustrations whilst providing qualified information to help fully stress; it is certainly reported that when stress understand the condition and offer practical tactics and levels are high, tinnitus seems to be solutions that help lessen the negative impact on everyday exacerbated. Benefits of Microchipping Pets It has now been almost a year since compulsory microchipping for dogs was introduced, making it a legal requirement to ensure your dog is microchipped and the records kept up to date. Microchipping is not just a way of registering dogs and promoting responsible pet breeding and pet ownership; it is an important way of helping to keep your pet safe. Each year, hundreds of dogs are handed into rescue centres - many of these dogs have clearly been well loved, well trained and well looked after, but have either been stolen or gone missing. If a microchip is in place (and records are up to date) then the dog can be reunited with its owners. Without a microchip the chances of reunion are slim and your beloved pet has to take his chances in a shelter kennel. A collar/tag is not enough, this can be easily lost or removed. However it’s not just dogs that benefit from

CROSSROADS

microchipping - cats are even more prone to wandering and without a microchip owners often never know what happened to them. Importantly, if you find a ‘stray’ cat, PLEASE take it to your local vets/shelter as soon as possible to have it scanned rather than simply ‘adopting’ it. That ‘stray’ cat may be routinely visiting your garden as part of its natural territory; frequently these ‘strays’ are someone else beloved pet. Please don’t start feeding them or taking them in without first checking whether they already have a home. If your pet is not microchipped then talk to your vets today about having one placed.
