This issue we have some very exciting news that we hope will be welcomed by our readers and by our advertisers. After much thought and considerable Market Research we have decided that, from the July/ August issue, we are going to merge our 3 magazines into 1.

Many of you may not be aware that for many years we have been publishing 3 local magazines (Villages, Risborough and Thame) – printing and distributing 8000 magazines in each area. We are now going to be merging these into one magazine (printing and distributing 24000 every other month).

Thriving Thame is a Quadruple Winner!

Chinnor Circular Walk

Walk length: 5.5 mile circular walk Starting Point: The Chinnor Village Centre, High Street, OX39 4DH

A 5.5 mile circular walk through beechwoods, chalk hills and a stretch of The Ridgeway National Trail. The walk offers a rich mix of industrial heritage, panoramic views, nature reserves and sites of geological interest. Steam railway enthusiasts and fans of film and television will find particular appeal along the way.

The walk starts in Chinnor, a large village which sits at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. Industries based in and around Chinnor have included lacemaking, chairmaking and agriculture and, until 1999, a cement works whose tall chimney was a wellknown local landmark. The first part of the walk starts gently through fields, shadowing the resurrected Watlington Branch

railway to the film-set village of Bledlow. The Lions at Bledlow provides the perfect opportunity to take on refreshments and gather yourself for the climb up onto the scarp at Chinnor Hill.

The climb up through beech woodland is punctuated by flower rich old chalk pits, and holloways; remnants of earlier commerce. You will follow a trackway bordered with a littering of pits and small quarries from the extraction of flint.

At the top of Chinnor Hill - a BBOWT nature reserve – you will be rewarded with extensive views over Oxfordshire and north Buckinghamshire. A steep descent to the ancient Icknield Way, now part of the Ridgeway National Trail, provides a good view of the massive disused Chinnor Chalk pits; the chalk was used for cement making, once a thriving industry and still in operation until 1999.

The cement works were used to film part of the opening hovercraft sequence in the Bond movie, Die Another Day. Access Information The route is mainly on unsurfaced tracks (muddy in wet weather) and there are stiles. There is one long uphill walk and a steep descent.

Refreshments There are lots of pubs and cafes in Chinnor. The Lions of Bledlow is a popular pub country pub along the route.

These circular walks are part of the Chilterns Country series of walking routes produced by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can download a free leaflet for it which has a route map and detailed route directions,

Thame Carnival 2017 Following a hugely successful carnival in 2016 we are planning to make this year’s event even better!

A Gentleman in Moscow – Amor Towles The gentleman of the title is Count Alexander Rostov. Given work as a waiter in the hotel restaurant, he forges close friendships with some of the other inhabitants. While his view is mainly confined to what he can see out of his tiny window, Rostov is able to observe and ruminate on a tumultuous Russia over the course of four decades.

See You in the Cosmos – Jack Cheng 11 year old Alex loves everything to do with space. So he builds a rocket and sets off for a rocket festival in Mexico.

Quack! Quack! It’s Back!

Thame Duck Race 2017

Thame’s much loved Duck Race returns on Sunday 11th June, run by Thame & District Round Table.

It’s a floating lottery, with around 2,000 individually numbered rubber ducks literally dumped into the river © Nick White from the bridge on the Old Long Crendon Road, assisted by the Thame crew of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue and their high pressure hoses when possible!

If your numbered ticket matches one of the first three ducks over the line, you win a prize paid in John Lewis vouchers, with all other proceeds donated to local causes.

For reasons unknown, the race is marshalled by Captain Ducky © Nick White and his pirate crew, in weird and wonderful (but ultimately pretty rubbish!) contraptions, to help the rubber duckies along their way...

The race starts on the old town bridge, accessed via Priest End, behind St Mary’s church. Gates open at 10.30am and the race will start at around 11.00am.

Tickets are on sale for £2, from local groups, Thame Town Hall and, at Thame Carnival held the day before the race. There may be a limited amount of tickets on sale at the start line on the morning of the race- in previous years the event has sold out so it’s best to buy your tickets in advance if you can.

Young at heart – The advantages of health screening for the older pet.

Our young, lively pets let us know quickly when they are ill.

When they are older, this can be much more difficult and confusing to spot as changes creep in, almost unnoticed, over time.

We, as vets, advise that you take your pet’s ageing seriously, as certain conditions become more common as the years go by. It is good practice to have an annual health screen from the age of eight for cats. For dogs this will vary according

to breed but generally from the age of eight to ten.

Your vet or nurse will take a history, perform a thorough physical examination, analyse a urine sample, offer blood screening (easily achieved with minimal stress) and blood pressure monitoring.

Health screening has three aims: 1. To prevent disease by identifying and reducing risk factors – obesity, high blood pressure, incorrect diet, etc.

2. To manage and prevent deterioration of current disease – such as overactive thyroid gland, diabetes,

chronic kidney and liver disease, osteoarthritis.

3. To help achieve the best quality of life in the remaining years – dental disease is present in 85% of cats over 5 and 95% of dogs over 8.

It might be worrying but is better to know what can be done. Remember there is no such disease as, “just old age”.

Camembert and Red Pepper Tarts

A really quick and easy snack, starter or light supper dish made with just five ingredients.

of a pound coin. Trim with a sharp knife to make a 26cm square. Cut into 4 x 13cm squares. Place the squares of pastry on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. With the tip of the knife, score a border in each pastry square about 1cm in from the outer edge.

Makes 4 Ready in 45 minutes Ingredients 2 large red peppers, deseeded and cut into strips 1 tbsp olive oil 250g puff pastry 150g Camembert cheese, thinly sliced 150g bag rocket and watercress salad Method 1. Preheat the oven to 220C, 200C Fan, Gas Mark 7. Place the pepper strips in a shallow roasting tin. Drizzle over the olive oil and roast for 15 minutes until just tender. Leave to cool.

2. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough square shape the thickness 30

3. Top each pastry square with some of the roasted pepper strips and cheese slices.

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden and the cheese has melted. Serve warm with the salad leaves.

TIP Add extra flavour by spreading a thin layer of pesto sauce or tomato chutney in the pastry squaare before topping with the pepper and cheese.

Abingdon Air & Country Show Sunday 14th May year’s show under the new guidance from the CAA and MAA, the Civilian and Military Aviation Authorities but this year there seems to have been even more work for Neil and our aviation experts to consider.

For the past two years we have given you an insight into the helicopters, the crews and the kit they use but this year we thought we would give you some idea of what we do to put the show on.

The show is a charity event, raising money for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance and takes about 6 months to prepare although some aspects can take much longer. Once the debrief is over mid-year we are back on it again looking out for acts that would appeal to our visitors and, in Neil Porter’s case listening to flying display pilots who believe their aircraft should be at our show next year!

As we get closer to the show everything ramps up from advertising and publicity to ticket distribution to our outlets, from taking bookings for traders and classic vehicle owners to doing all the paperwork you need to put on a show like ours. PostShoreham we got through last

The decision has been taken to move the show through 180deg. For those that have been to the show before you will be on the eastern side of the airfield facing west, meaning our displaying aircraft will fly over a far less densely populated area. What we have to do now is prepare the airfield and any work that needs doing is done by us and we pay £11,000 for the privilege!

By the time you get to us everything will be done and we hope to have another exciting day for all the family. As well as all the usual attractions we welcome the following:On the ground we have The Mangelwurzels and Britain’s Got Talent contestant Ellie May joining us in the music tent. In the arena we have the Buckingham Search and Rescue Dogs and the Cotswold Pheasant and Poultry Club have a stand. From today’s Army, 3 & 4 Regiments RLC, No. 7 Rifles and RAF 4624 Auxiliary Squadron, RAF Brize Norton will give presentations.
