Editors’

Letter

Welcome to the Summer issue of Chiltern View magazine. It is always tricky to write these editors’ letters, as we are trying to look into the future and have to imagine you all reading it over a month away, but this one is harder than most as things are still so unpredictable.

little unnerving at times, we will all adapt to this new way of life and begin to look ahead. We need to have things to look forward to and feel optimistic about the future. It is with all of this in mind and with the support of our wonderful, local community and amazing local advertisers, we made the decision to print and distribute this issue. We have filled this issue with positive stories. Businesses changing the way they work so they can start to open again, towns putting things in place to keep people safe when they visit the shops and many inventive ways to adapt to the current circumstances. Our local businesses have really suffered during this time, and we urge you to continue to support your local trades people, shops and services through this difficult period.

At the time of writing this, lock down has been eased further, businesses are starting to open again, and people are carefully meeting up with friends and loved ones in accordance with government guidelines. The mood seems to be one of cautious optimism and we are all hoping this can only improve with time and we will all begin to accept a new ‘normal’.

We felt strongly that each and every one of you deserves the beautiful bouquet on our front cover but, sadly, only one of you can win it. Our thanks to Bizzie Lizzie in Thame for donating it for our competition in this issue. Please go to page 33 to enter.

Things are going to be a bit different for some while yet but, whilst we may find it strange and a

How do you stay home and stay safe if you don’t have a home? It can be hard to get past the stereotypes of homelessness and to imagine that here in the heart of the Chilterns anyone could possibly face this devastating threat. But every year, hundreds of people are made homeless in our community. At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, laws were put in place to prevent evictions, but these are due to be lifted at the start of the summer and thousands of people will be at risk of becoming homeless. And in the wake of the pandemic, and the impact on jobs and wages, we are anticipating a huge increase in the amount of people who need help to keep their home. 6

Homelessness is always life-threating, but during a health pandemic the risk is even higher. If you don’t have a home, you can’t self-isolate protecting yourself and your loved ones. Wycombe Homeless Connection is an independent charity working across Buckinghamshire serving those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We provide free legal advice, support and care to people who face losing their homes. We help people understand what their rights are, what help they are entitled to and how to get it. From The Puddingstone, turn right up New Road. Crossover Salisbury Close and take the first left along Upper Icknield Way.

5. Turn right down it for a few paces and bear left up the slope to a kissing gate. Go through, stay straight ahead and fork right as the path descends parallel to the lane. Where the path veers towards the lane, bear left and continue to descend. Take the steps on the left and follow the path down to a kissing gate.

1. Walk along the unmade lane for 300m to a signpost. Turn right uphill keeping to the right-hand edge of the field to a footpath junction just inside the wood. 2. Continue straight up the steep steps and through the gate. Climb the steps directly ahead and continue uphill to see the views from the stone topograph near the top. 3. Take the path to the left of the bench into the wood. Go through the kissing gate and turn sharp right. Follow the path round the edge of the wood to a noticeboard and kissing gate. Bear right through the gate and cross the lane into the Whiteleaf Hill car park. At the far end, go past the noticeboard to a path junction.

After the path opens out, continue forward for a further 250m, turn right down a set of steps and go through a gate to leave the reserve. Follow the path down to a path junction near Waypoint 2. Princes Risborough Town Council is working with retailers to prepare to re-open safely and abide by government Covid-19 social distancing and health and safety guidelines. Meanwhile retailers are encouraged to be on the Risborough Basket platform, which is free to join! www.risboroughbasket.co.uk The Town Council is also looking at options in the High Street to help with social distancing. These fantastic signs will soon be seen in/around the town, produced by the brilliant Ben Jennings, cartoonist & illustrator. 19

Lacey Green Players We are delighted to let you know that LGP, a local amateur dramatic group, have a play all ready to rehearse the moment lockdown is eased and we can get together again as a group. The play written in the 1920’s is “The Ghost Train” by Arnold Ridley, who played Godfrey in Dad’s Army. It is a thriller and, as for our last year’s performance of “The Ladykillers”, steam trains are a large feature of the plot. Who doesn’t love a steam train and it provides anyone interested in joining the sound and lighting specialists with a great opportunity to learn skills which will hopefully be useful in the ‘new’ world. Our director and a full production team are in place and we were about to audition when Covid-19 struck. As soon as we can safely rehearse, LGP will 20

swing into action once more. Performance dates will be announced as soon as it is safe for audiences to gather again; look out for the information on our website, Facebook page and posters around Lacey Green and Princes Risborough. Men in Sheds A Thame Group is trying to establish Thame Shed based on the national movement ‘Men in Sheds.’ It would offer a larger version of the garden shed – a place to feel at home and pursue practical interests where members share tools, resources and expertise to work on projects at their own pace in a safe, friendly and inclusive environment. Sheds are places for skill-sharing and informal learning, for individual pursuits and community projects, for purposeful activity, achievement and social interaction. A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood but may include metalworking. Reclamation, re-use, repair, up-cycling and restoration feature strongly. Whichever activities are pursued, the essence of a Shed is not the building, but the network of supportive relationships. Thame Shed would be available for anyone who enjoys creating, making, mending or has a practical skill they 22

are willing to share. It would also be a place for those who have never had the opportunity to develop practical skills, haven’t the space to do the practical things they want to do, or at the moment spend their time alone using their skills. It could also provide an opportunity for those who simply want to watch others work, sharing conversation, perhaps supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of its retired, unemployed or furloughed populace. Discussions are underway to provide Thame Shed with a base in the town. If you would like to be kept in touch with the project please email Mike Ashford on thameshed@gmail.com.

Book Review

Books to keep you busy Dream Big! Heroes Who Dared to Be Bold – Sally Morgan Dream Big! comprises a hundred bite-size biographies, each accompanied by an illustration. My ten-year old and I have both enjoyed learning more about some well-known names (e.g. David Attenborough and Maya Angelou) and discovering other inspirational people neither of us had heard of. As well as being a great read, it’s opened up conversations about racism, sexism, LGBTQ+ rights and having the courage to stand up for what’s right. Highly recommended. The Sin Eater – Megan Campisi 14 year old May Owens expects to be sentenced to death for stealing a loaf of bread. But her sentence is much worse. She’s to become a Sin Eater – responsible for taking on the sins of others so that their soul is cleansed. The role means she’s to be forever shunned. So when she discovers someone is trying to blame dead women for sins they didn’t commit, no one will listen. Intriguing setting, believable characters and a great story. Pre-order it now for delivery at the end of July. The Sleeper and the Spindle – Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddle This beautifully illustrated book takes the story of Sleeping Beauty and adds a dollop of darkness and a few ‘what ifs’. What if the sleeping sickness spread? What if there was a queen with hair as dark as a raven’s wing, lips as red as blood and several dwarves by her side, who could set out on a quest to rescue the princess? Yes,

28

The Sleeper and the Spindle is aimed at young adults and takes under an hour to read, but don’t let that stop you from adding it to your wish list. The Great British Sewing Bee: Sustainable Style – Caroline Akselson and Alexandra Bruce The companion book to the latest series of the popular BBC programme, The Great British Sewing Bee: Sustainable Style invites readers to upcycle and repair existing clothes, and make new ones using sustainable, natural fabrics. There are twenty-seven projects to choose from and plenty of advice for beginners. Grow Food for Free: The easy, sustainable, zero-cost way to a plentiful harvest – Huw Richards Growing your own fruit and vegetables can be expensive once you’ve factored in the costs of plants, compost, pots and so on. However, it is possible to grow vegetables on the cheap. This book has plenty of tips on doing just that, from growing new plants using vegetable scraps to ideas for raised beds and containers. There’s also step-by-step advice on everything from sowing and transplanting to controlling pests. Vegan(ish) – Jack Monroe Whether you’re 100% vegan or just want to eat more plant-based meals, Jack Monroe’s latest cook book could well become your go-to resource. There are a hundred recipes altogether, from simple soups and sandwiches to more complicated dishes such as Beet Wellington and Ultimate Moussaka. As you’d expect from the queen of budget meals, recipes are carefully costed out so they won’t break the bank.

Pet Health

Sunshine fun … Pets feel the heat! By Crossroads Veterinary Centre The weather has been lovely and warm and getting warmer each week. Now that the lockdown message has changed and we can go out more often and travel further afield again, many people will be taking their dogs out with them. Long sunny days, warm evenings and everyone wants to be out in the sun as much as possible. Our pets enjoy it too - but let us not forget the impact of the sun on our furry friends! Some summertime pet hints Walk wisely - Try to walk your dog at the cooler times of day, either early morning or early evening rather than in the midday sun. Paws for thought - If the pavement is too hot for you to touch or stand bare foot, it is too hot for their feet to walk on. Where possible walk your dog on the grass. Water water everywhere - Always ensure your pet has access to fresh, clean and topped up water. Try to take an extra bottle with you when out on those long dog walks. Never leave your pet in the car! Cars can reach oven like temperatures inside, even in

relatively mild temperatures outside. Leaving a window open or parking in ‘the shade’ will not create enough airflow to cool your pet, so even a few minutes can be dangerous. Use Sun cream - Pets can burn just like us, particularly on the tips of their ears, noses, bellies or any areas that aren’t well covered by fur. White cats/dogs in particular are at risk of burning and getting skin cancer. Please don’t forget your small furries! Move hutches out of direct sunlight and with enough air circulation. Replenish water frequently and ensure water bottles and bowls are kept cool by adding ice cubes to the water. You can also freeze a two-litre bottle of water and wrap it in a towel so they have something cool to rest against. What are the signs of Heat stroke? • Excessive panting • Difficulty breathing • Drooling or vomiting • Incoordination, staggering, collapse • Diarrhoea • Seizures If your pet is showing any signs of heat stroke, take your pet inside, offer them water, wet towels with cool water and apply to their skin (do not submerge them). CONTACT YOUR VETERINARY PRACTICE IMMEDIATELY. Heat stroke can progress quickly and be fatal to your pet, if immediate attention is not sought.

Thame Rewards If you live in Thame or a neighbouring village, now you can easily discover and enjoy local independent businesses with just a few clicks. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, like many businesses, Caz Wales, creator of Thame Rewards Club, recognised that there was not a quick and easy way to know which businesses were open and what amended services they were providing, such as home delivery. As a result, Caz launched the ever-expanding SHOP OX9 Directory & Guide to solve this problem and it now details over 100 local independent businesses, all of whom are either in Thame itself, or in neighbouring villages. This is in partnership with the existing Thame Rewards Club initiative, which provides the opportunity for local businesses to incentivise trade through providing offers for Thame Rewards Club members. You can currently sign up to Thame Rewards Club for just £5 per year to access exclusive offers to save you money when you support participating businesses. To provide examples, TRC Card holders can currently enjoy 10% off at the Woodworks Trading Ltd for purchases over £15 and the Wild Lemongrass Chinese is providing 5% off between Sunday and Wednesday.

more important time than ever for us all to support them to help them recover”. Over the past 8 weeks since lockdown, the Directory has received over 10,000 visitors and a recent SHOP OX9 survey revealed that 75% of respondents have discovered and used independent businesses they were not previously aware of, because of the Shop OX9 Directory which is one of the core goals of the Shop OX9 Guide. The directory has been supported by Thame Town Council who have been able to sign post residents to a central location where they knew that information about opening times and how to access services were being updated regularly. During the height of the lock down, so many businesses changed how they worked in order to meet the needs of the local community and ShopOX9 provided this detail, working hard to make sure that it stayed current at all times. Both TTC and ShopOX9 are passionate about supporting the local businesses that have worked really hard to support us during this time, and together have gone on to work in partnership to launch a ‘shop local’ campaign - encouraging us all to ‘think local first’, not just now but in

Caz explained “Thame and the local area has a fantastic array of high-quality independent businesses, but it can be difficult to know who and where they are, especially if they do not have a physical high street presence. As a result, I decided to create a central platform to showcase and promote local businesses to boost local exposure, community awareness and use. The Pandemic has placed small businesses under huge strain and now is a

the future once ‘normal’ life returns. Part of this normal life is ensuring that residents feel safe about coming back to use the town centre and so the partnership has expanded to include Adactus, a local company that have developed an App that allows you to ‘take a ticket’ in a queue for the business you want to join. It is hugely simple to use and will allow residents to wait safely elsewhere or visit other shops that do not have a queue, while they are waiting for their turn to come up in the queue. (just download ‘SmartQ by Adactus’ from the App/Play store)

If you own/run a local independent business, you can currently register for a free basic listing on the Directory until 1st September 2020. Caz told us “Although it is great news that businesses are starting to reopen and a sense of normality is returning, providing the option of a free listing, is one way Shop OX9 can support local businesses, whilst also supporting the local community to easily access services and products through having a comprehensive go-to guide”. If you would like to discover and enjoy more independent businesses on your doorsteps or just a short walk/drive away, please visit: VISIT THE DIRECTORY: www.shopox9.com JOIN THAME REWARDS CLUB: www.thamerewardsclub.com Follow via Facebook.com/ThameRewardsClub Follow via instagram.com/thame.rewards.club. shop.ox9

Picnics Summer is upon us and with lockdown rules being eased, our minds turn to spending time with family and friends. Observing social distancing while we do so is easier to achieve outdoors, so picnics take the spotlight. Picnics are the perfect way to enjoy el-fresco dining and can be simple or very elaborate affairs. Whether you are home-baking or buying your picnic, try and keep a few fresh and healthy choices alongside the less healthy options. Keep in mind that less packaging is better for the environment and try and keep single use plastics to a minimum. Preparing food into portions makes for an easy life – make carrot sticks, melon wedges, and slice up cakes before you go. Picnic checklist • Carrying the picnic – will you be walking first and carrying your picnic? - if so share the load • How will you pack your picnic? - careful packing will prevent squashing soft fruits • How will you keep your picnic and drinks cool? • Are you taking too much/too little food/drinks? • Have you catered for special diets? - snacks, mains and a dessert? • Don’t pack chocolate on a hot day – it will melt! • Tighten lids to prevent spillages • Are you taking plates, cutlery and serviettes – or making do?

Monkey Music Pre-School Classes Launch in Aylesbury and High Wycombe Monkey Music, the UK’s award-winning pre-school music class for babies and toddlers, is now officially open in the area of Aylesbury & High Wycombe.

36

Sally Williamson launched classes online in April, with Monkey Music at Home, but hopes to be back in venues for the autumn term, government guidelines permitting! Classes will be held throughout the week in Wendover, Princes Risborough and High Wycombe. Until then, Monkey Music at Home provides as close to the same experience as the face to face classes, with singing, movement and playing instruments, be they a tambourine or a saucepan and wooden spoon!

Monkey Music offers a progressive curriculum with 4 stages of classes, each aimed at a child’s specific age and development.

Monkey Music introduces music to very young children, from 3 months to 4 years, in a fun way they can easily understand and enjoy, with teachers who gently encourage social, language and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment.

Sally, who has experienced the joy of Monkey Music as a parent, is very excited to be bringing classes to the area of Aylesbury & High Wycombe. Visit https://bit.ly/mmayleswyc to find out more and book your place at one of our online classes.

Head of testing at the GHI

Diarmuid Gavin and Christine Walkden get behind Blue Cross advice on keeping pets safe in your garden this summer Getting out in the garden with our pets is a joy and with the start of summer and garden centres open again, even more of us will be spending time outdoors. To ensure you and your pet can enjoy your garden together, national pet charity Blue Cross is providing top tips on how you can make it a safe space, as gardens can hold hidden dangers for our four-legged friends. Only last week Blue Cross vets treated a cat who was rushed into the charity’s animal hospital in London after eating a lily, while a dog was treated after eating food from a compost heap.

• Cover ponds - These are great for attracting wildlife to your garden, but to keep them safe and your pet, ensure they are covered by mesh or fence them off.

Caroline Reay, senior vet at Blue Cross, said: “We want people to enjoy their gardens with their pets so it’s important for owners to think about the space and how they can make it safe and interesting for them to enjoy together.”

• Look out for slugs and snails - These can cause lungworm if eaten by your dog, so be sure to keep an eye on your pet when they’re out in the garden. If using slug pellets, be careful to use pellets that are non-toxic for pets.

Here are some top tips to ensure your pet keeps safe when they’re out and about exploring the garden:

• Compost - If you compost food scraps, make sure they are kept in a sealed container that pets cannot get into.

• Toxic plants - Think carefully about what plants you use in your garden as some such as lillies, geranium and sweet peas can cause stomach upsets and other symptoms if eaten by pets

There are also lots of ways you can make your garden more pet friendly too.

• Fix fencing - Be sure to fix any gaps or replace panels that may have been damaged over the winter to keep your pets safely inside your garden. • Keep sheds locked - These often contain sharp tools and chemicals that can be toxic for pets. • Avoid the use of fertilisers and weed killers - If you do need to use these, find pet safe versions and ensure your pet isn’t in the garden when you use them.

38

Trees or platforms around your garden can provide cats with a place to observe the world below, while a digging pit will provide a good hunting ground for your dog. For rabbits, a secure run with a shelter on the lawn is best so your pet is safe from predators and can’t nibble garden plants. Many plants can also provide stimulation and interest for pets, cats like catnip or catmint for example. Garden designer and presenter Diarmuid Gavin said: “My dogs Bowie and Roxie love spending time

www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Horticulturist and presenter Christine Walkden said: “Dogs have always been an important part of my life, and like us, they fully appreciate the joy that comes with spending time in the garden. You might not think owning a pet and an impressive garden go hand in hand, but with a bit of planning and by selecting certain plants you can create a safe and beautiful space to share this summer and beyond together with your pet.” • To contribute to the Blue Cross emergency appeal and help care for homeless pets during lockdown visit www.bluecross.org.uk/donate-covid19 outdoors, and with the warmer weather this means more time in the garden, which can be a wonderful space to enjoy with your pets. However, us owners need to be aware of the hidden dangers in our backyards that could potentially harm our four-legged companions. By taking Blue Cross’ helpful advice on how to pet-proof your garden, we can ensure our pets are able to relax, play and enjoy their outdoor havens.”

As a charity, Blue Cross receives no Government funding and relies on donations to continue its vital work helping sick, injured and homeless animals through its rehoming centres and animal hospitals across the country. The charity also provides a pet bereavement support service. For more information visit www.bluecross.org.uk

CHILTERN VIEW MAGAZINE

What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

The Rotary Club of Princes Risborough

Covid 19 emergency charitable fund

During the current crisis, the Rotary Club of Princes Risborough continues to help those in need in the local area. In the past we have donated over £30,000 annually from the money raised from a series of events throughout the year. But these events are no longer possible because of the pandemic, however, during it we have been able give over £5,000 to Covid related local charities. Our reserves are now nearly exhausted. There are still many initiatives which have been established by volunteers to meet local needs, and which urgently require financial support. So we are now asking individuals and organisations if they could donate to a fund, to enable us to continue supporting your community. If you feel you are able to help please donate through: justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/princesrisboroughrotary Be assured that any donations you make will be paid out to local charities in full.

Heart of Bucks is supporting local organisations responding to the coronavirus Heart of Bucks, the Community Foundation for Buckinghamshire, recently set up the Bucks Coronavirus Response Appeal to support charities in Buckinghamshire who are most affected and vulnerable at this time of crisis. In addition to the funds raised by this local appeal, Heart of Bucks have also received funding from the National Emergencies Trust (NET) Coronavirus Appeal to distribute locally. So far, Heart of Bucks have distributed over £250,000 in emergency funds to Buckinghamshire-based charities, organisations and community groups who are working to alleviate some of the negative impact that the coronavirus has had on the local community. Heart of Bucks have distributed grants to support a number of local groups. Among the beneficiaries are Aylesbury Foodbank, who are now able to offer more help to disadvantaged people, Buckinghamshire Mind, who are offering online mental health support, and children’s charity Pace, who are providing remote education and therapy to vulnerable disabled children. The Fremantle Trust used their funding to bring hope to their care home residents. They purchased tablets and Google Chromecasts and staff have taught 44

elderly residents how to use this technology to make video calls to their families, send messages and even get involved with interactive activities, such as taking part in online exercise videos. “I can’t begin to tell you what a difference the grant has made to our services”, said Sue Faulkner, Community and Lifestyle Manager at The Fremantle Trust. “There have been many tears of joy. “Birthdays have been shared, sing-alongs with family members, and so much more… We couldn’t have done it without Heart of Bucks acting so quickly on my application”. Heart of Bucks continue to fund local groups on a daily basis and are encouraging applications from groups in Buckinghamshire who are working to alleviate some the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the local community. If you are a Buckinghamshire charity, organisation or community group currently running activities or projects to support the community at this time, then Heart of Bucks would love to hear from you. Grants of up to £5,000 are available from both the Bucks Coronavirus Response Appeal and the NET Coronavirus Appeal to groups helping the most vulnerable people in the community. To read the application criteria and to apply for funding for both funds with just one application form, head to heartofbucks.org/coronavirus-response-funds/. Catherine Pearson

Longwick Evening WI The call came out from the Buckinghamshire Federation WI- Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust had sent a special request to the Federation for members to make Laundry Bags. NHS staff have to remove their scrubs before they leave hospital, place them in a laundry bag, then place the bag with the contents into a 60 degree wash when they get home, thereby preventing cross-contamination. At last, something we could do to help our wonderful NHS workers! Members were alerted and set to work finding suitable fabrics. Sheets, duvets and all those pieces of unused fabric so many of us keep for a rainy day came into their own. Workboxes were raided for tape and cord to make drawstrings. One member suggested adapting pillowcases- yet another good idea. Longwick WI 52

provided over 40 bags in a very short space of time. It felt really good to be able to help in some small way. Prior to lockdown we formed a ‘Befriending Group’, in partnership with AGE UK, focused on Longwick residents who need additional support in their lives. Regrettably, lockdown has put this on hold, at the moment; however, some of our members are providing telephone support where possible. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

The office will be open at 9am until 3pm Monday to Thursday and 9am to 1pm on Friday. August Marquee 2020 – Cancelled After much careful consideration and discussion, it was agreed by the Council, with saddened hearts, to cancel the marquee this year. This decision was a tough one, as you can imagine and it comes with concern over the social distancing requirements needed, that will probably be for a long time ahead. We cannot see how the marquee would be a safe environment or how social distancing could be maintained, especially if the weather isn’t on our side! All of the hirers who had requested usage of the marquee have been informed and they have all agreed that this was the best decision in the current climate, although very disappointing for all. The marquee is set to return in August 2021.

Kenzo’s Diaries – A Dogs Life With all my new found time and freedom in what my ‘hoomans’ call ‘lockdown’, I have decided to take up a new hobby. Mummy and Daddy call it ‘gardenin’. I have decided to dedicate all my time in the lovely sunny weather to making my garden as ‘bootiful’ as possible. The ‘hoomans’, after leaving their jobs to spend all day with me (or at least I think that’s why they’re all here), sometimes help me do my ‘gardenin’. First of all, my job is to make as many holes in the garden as possible, obviously to make sure there is ‘nofin’ hiding under my dirt. In strategic locations I have got to ‘digin’ as deep as I can, much to the ‘hoomans’ delight. All the ‘digin’ makes me hungry, luckily there are little red balls that drop from the droopy tree that the hooman call ‘chair ees’. I don’t think I am supposed to eat them as everyone keeps ‘shoutin’ at me and trying to take them away. I just can’t help myself though, as they taste super sweet but apparently make my pops super smelly... Anyway, back to my ‘gardenin’. While i was distracted eatin my ‘chair ees’, the ‘hoomans’ put

Helping my Sister

‘flowas’ in my purpose dug holes! I was not happy! When the ‘hoomans’ aren’t looking, my favourite thing to do is to eat the petals off the ‘flowas’, not only do they taste good, it also teaches the ‘hoomans’ a lesson, not to fill up my ‘diggin’ holes! As I was doing more of my ‘diggin’, the ‘hoomans’ got out their biggest weapon... the ‘ose’! This long, snakey, squiggly, rope that squirts out water at super speeds! I have to learn to dodge the ‘ose’ while daddy shoots around me trying to distract me from ‘diggin’ up more holes. Then, after all my dodgin, I really needed a cool down. I charged towards my ‘paddy pool’ and jumped in – “Ah bliss!”. Unfortunately, I was now soaked, so they grabbed the ‘tow ell’ and started wipin down my paws. Once I was clean, they locked me inside and told me I’m banned from doin my ‘gardenin’ because I’m a ‘nitebear’? I hope that’s a good thing!

Create Your Staycation Paradise We’ve all been spending more time in our gardens this year and the chance of a summer holiday abroad is a bit uncertain right now. Here are some ideas of how to turn your garden into a tropical paradise that you won’t want to leave! Plants Tall Plants - Fatsia banana palms are the perfect choice with their large leaves, adding an instant impact. These exotic plants are ideally suited to our climate, dealing well with damp and below zero conditions as well as hot dry spells. Hot Colours - Cannas are a great vibrant choice! With their bold leaves, showy flowers and hot shades of red, orange, yellow and pink. Available in a range of heights to create that tropical feel. They’re also very popular with pollinators, so are good if you want to encourage wildlife in your garden. Pretty florals such as Agapanthus also fill the space with colour. Light Plants - Ornamental grasses and grass like plants will help to lend a touch of the tropics to your tropical garden. Low-growing or mid-size grasses are good ground covers. They’ll do a great job of smothering weeds while creating an interesting texture for your garden. Shades of Green – Different shades of green will create that sense of lushness. Light or lime greens can add light to dark areas, while darker shades of green can make hot areas feel cooler. Palms, ferns, ornamental grasses and other leafy delights will add an exotic relaxing vibe to your garden. Add some water Bring your garden to life with a soothing water feature, a wildlife pond or a simple bird bath. There are lots of ways to include water in the garden and of 58

course it’s also one of the best ways to encourage wildlife. Almost any body of water, whatever its size, will have some value to wildlife, even if only as a drinking place for birds, while a well-designed and maintained pond can be a haven for all sorts of birds, insects and animals. Eating Al Fresco Everyone enjoys cooking and eating outdoors – create a relaxing area with some comfortable seating and shade for all the family. Chimineas, fire pits, relaxing outdoor lighting, decorative pots and parasols will help you create that perfect space to chill out. Make a Herb Garden with the kids Herbs are great plants to grow in pots, so if all you have space for is a container garden, these herbs would be a great choice! Sage, Thyme, Rosemary, Basil and Lavender.

Health

Continuing to tackle physical and mental health in lockdown Even two weeks into the government’s enforced lockdown, surveys unearthed a huge rise in musculoskeletal complaints and declining mental health among the UK’s homeworkers. Over half the people working from home are reporting new aches and pains, especially in the neck, shoulder and back. Diet and exercise levels have also taken a turn for the worse, with 60% admitting they exercised less, while almost one in three (30%) were eating a less nutritious diet. One in five admitted that they were drinking more alcohol than before the coronavirus outbreak. Poor sleep and increased risk of exhaustion are also on the rise, with 64% of the respondents reporting a lack of sleep due to worries with a similar increase in symptoms of fatigue. Genuinely, it is now more than ever that we need to be honest with ourselves and reach out for support

62

when we need it. At the same time, we should endeavour to extend this compassion to those around us, as we all work together to adjust to the current new way of living. Staying active is more important than ever right now. We are encouraged to continue to exercise and getting outdoors into the fresh air and sunshine is beneficial, in itself, to your health, even if that’s just into your garden or back yard. Even if you’re mostly in your house at the moment, there are plenty of ways you can still keep fit and active. Best wishes, David

Midnight Walk rises from the ashes as Not The Midnight Walk A local charity facing the loss of its biggest fundraising event has found a uniquely “lockdown” solution. This year, with coronavirus restrictions on mass gatherings, the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity Midnight Walk will not be possible. This is bad news because the Midnight Walk is the Charity’s biggest fundraising event, raising on average £50,000 each year for hospice care in Buckinghamshire. So, the Fundraising team at Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has had to think of something completely different for Midnight Walkers this year. “How about a sunrise stroll instead?” says, Vicky Harman, Events Manager at the Charity. “As the sun rises at 5am on 18th July, Walkers can set off from their home or somewhere on the routes around

Buckinghamshire that we will provide maps for. They can walk the usual five miles, or ten miles, or they can walk further if they want to. As it’s starting at dawn, but it’s replacing the much-loved Midnight Walk, we’re calling it Not The Midnight Walk.” Florence Nightingale Hospice provides support, palliative treatment, and care for people with terminal illnesses or who are at the end of life, both at the Hospice and in their own homes across Buckinghamshire. “It’s not the Midnight Walk we know and love,” Vicky says. “But it’s still a chance to challenge yourself and support your local Hospice.” For more information and to sign up, please visit www.fnhospice.org.uk/notthemidnightwalk or call 01296 429975

The page already features some gems which are sure to amuse and entertain. They include a recitation of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18, ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’, made on location in a sunny garden. One of the best-known of Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets, it’s brilliantly delivered in a northern accent – perhaps ‘Shakespeare meets Alan Bennett’.

Established in 1985, the confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC) is the premier roofing trades association in the UK. The members are considered to be the best roofing contractors in the business. If you require a roof repair or even a completely new roof, the recommended roofers and roofing companies are here to you. All new works can carry a fully insured 10-20 year back up guarantee (subject to payment). This protects the customer should their chosen roofing contractor decide to cease trading for any reason during the guarantee period. All members are totally commited to providing clients with a quality driven service that reflects good craft skills, ethical working practices and fair prices.
