Welcome to the September/October issue of Chiltern View Magazine.

mean that some of you may have received the magazine for the first time in July – we do hope you found it useful and informative. Sadly, the majority of our wonderful community groups are still not able to meet, so the magazine has a slightly different flavour than usual. All of our community information is kept up to date on our website www.chilternviewmagazines. co.uk/events/ so do let us know if you hear of any changes that we have missed.

It is always something of a challenge to write the Editor’s letter, as we have a lead time of about 3 weeks between writing and delivering, but, in these strange times, things can change very quickly and become ‘old news’ before the printers ink has dried! We apologise if anything in the magazine is out of date, but we do try to keep the information as current as possible.

Health

Working from Home Increasingly, going into the office doesn’t even require heading out the door. But working from home can present a unique set of challenges, especially when it comes to your health. The abundance of alluring snacks in the kitchen, the lack of social stimulation and the temptation to work in an ergonomically unsound position, like in bed, can all sabotage our best health intentions. Here are some tips for staying healthy while working from home: Set up a separate office space. Use a space in your home that’s designated solely for work. Choose a good chair.

Or ditch the chair altogether. Use a standing desk to give your back a break and reduce your overall risks.

Get up every half an hour and get out at least once a day. Set a timer or use an app to remind you to get up and stretch once every 30 minutes, and make sure to get outside, even just to walk around the garden.

Set a schedule and stick to it. It can be tempting to wake up late and work at odd hours, but you will benefit your mental and physical health.

Importantly schedule your own time!

Get showered and dressed as if you’re going to the office. Research has shown that self-efficacy has a positive impact on health behaviours, including weight control and exercise.

Get social in your community.

Maintaining healthy social connections improves your overall well-being and helps you stay motivated.

Kop Hill Climb Dear Everyone, It is with a heavy heart that the Kop Hill Climb Organising Committee has taken the decision not to proceed with an event of any kind this year.

Since the advent of Covid-19, the Committee has been hoping that, by September, we would be able to stage the event that everyone knows and loves in order to continue raising funds for our charities, whose need is now greater than ever. Various alternatives which greatly reduced the public risk have been considered, including classic vehicle charity runs through the towns and villages of Buckinghamshire.

Meanwhile, our charities continue to look to us to provide whatever financial help is possible. The Committee has already launched an appeal for funds. https://www.totalgiving.co.uk/mypage/ khcappeal If you have fond memories of the event over the past eleven years, please consider 2020 as a year in which you can still make a difference to so many, even though we have no event to offer.

However, after careful and rigorous examination of them all, the Committee has reached the conclusion that none of these substitute plans would fulfil the financial and safety criteria essential to a successful event.

It is, therefore, shortly beginning work on plans for 2021, when we all fervently hope that the event as we know it will once again take place. Next year will mark the 110th Anniversary of the first ever Kop Hill Climb, which is an incentive for everyone to return with renewed vigour and appetite.

The Lockdown Larder was born! The name was agreed & a sign was painted. Initially we set up in the livestock trailer. A fridge, a table, some bunting and a stripy rug were added & suddenly, we had the beginnings of a shop!

• We are now also stocking honey from the bees in the lambing field and from September we will be stocking honey from our own hives which are amongst the Phacelia and the Sunflowers.

• Pasteurised apple juice from our own apples • Fresh seasonal vegetables from the garden and potatoes from Rectory Farm.

• We even stock beautiful British Sheepskin rugs!

We bought flour in bulk from Heygates (www.heygates.co.uk), who we sell some of our milling wheat to. A production line was set up at the kitchen table, weighing, bagging, stitching and labelling. We then arranged for milk and cream to be delivered twice a week from Laceys Family Farm at Lane End (www.laceysfamilyfarm.co.uk); they are our local dairy and it really is the best!

And then we grew! We asked the local community what else they would like, and the rest is history!

So, as well as the above, we now stock the following: • Large free-range eggs - some from our own hens and the rest are supplied by Laceys.

• Our very own Milly’s cakes at least twice a week as well as bread and pastries to order every 22

• And finally, we are also now a refill station for Ecover (www.ecover.com)!

When the sun was shining the trailer worked so well, it was quirky, easy to access, easy to disinfect and made social distancing so much easier, but then the weather changed! And the stock trailer was needed for purpose! After much deliberation, cogitation and speculation and many conversations with our lovely customers, we decided to invest in a portable building.

So that is where we are now! A new Venture has begun!

As many of you will know, we cancelled our regular daily service from mid-March in response to Government guidelines on dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. We also stopped running outings and making the bus available for group use.

However, our bus and drivers have not been idle. We joined with Princes Risborough Town Council in providing a delivery service from The Risborough Basket and our bus delivered essential supplies to the outlying villages until the beginning of August. The delivery service was a lifeline for many people in the outlying villages and greatly valued.

On 19th July we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of starting our service by delivering afternoon tea tins to nearly 100 of our loyal passengers in and around Princes Risborough.

We’re now looking at when we might be able to get back to our normal bus service.

Crispy topped deep-dish apple pie Make the most of the abundance of home-grown apples at this time of year with this delicious deep-dish apple pie.

Serve with cream, custard or ice cream.

Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 minutes, plus chilling and cooling FOR THE PASTRY CASE AND FILLING 500g ready-made shortcrust pastry, thawed if frozen Flour, for dusting 1kg eating apples, peeled, cored and diced 100g caster sugar 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 egg, beaten FOR THE CRISPY TOPPING 40g unsalted butter 40g light soft brown sugar 50g toasted flaked almonds 1 For the pastry case, roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a greased 23cm round spring-form cake tin (the pastry 28

needs to come right up the sides of the tin). Chill in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, gas mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.

2 For the filling, place the diced apples in a bowl and stir in the caster sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice.

Spoon the mixture into the pastry case. Brush the rim of the pastry case with beaten egg. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a circle large enough to cover the filling, and drape over the filling. Pinch the edges together to seal then trim off any excess pastry.

Brush the top with beaten egg.

3 Bake the pie on the pre-heated baking sheet for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is pale golden.

4 For the crispy topping, heat all the ingredients in a medium pan and let bubble for 2-3 minutes.

Remove the pie from the oven and gently spread the hot mixture over the top of the pie. Return the pie to the oven for a further 10-15 minutes until the topping is crunchy. Serve warm or cold.

The Dangers Of Pet Dental Disease

By Crossroads Veterinary Centre As humans we can’t imagine never brushing our teeth, as we know our teeth would rot and eventually fall out.

Well, the same rule applies to our cats and dogs.

The best way of preventing dental disease is by daily brushing, and prevention is far better than cure.

It is not uncommon to hear people say things such as: ‘But he/she’s still eating so they can’t be in that much pain’ ‘My dog has dog breath but it is normal for dogs to have stinky breath’ Nope! Both statements are untrue.

Pets will continue to eat, and eat well, even when they have severe dental disease. It is a natural survival instinct in animals. Animals are also amazing at coping and hiding signs of illness, so just because they are eating doesn’t mean that their mouth isn’t sore or that their teeth are ok.

Halitosis is one of the most obvious symptoms of dental disease and might mean there is severe infection/decay within the mouth.

What dental problems should you look out for?

• Plaque- sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth after eating • Tartar - Over time plaque hardens into yellow/ brown tartar or calculus, which is firmly attached to the tooth.

• Gingivitis - Redness/inflammation along the gum line 30

• Bleeding from the gums • Broken or loose teeth • Bad Breath What other problems can dental disease cause?

Severe dental disease causes bacteria to be released into the bloodstream which can have serious effects on the major organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys. Looking after your pet’s teeth means you’re looking after your pet’s health.

How is dental disease treated?

In the early stages of dental disease, home care such as regular brushing or enzymatic gels on the gums may be enough to reverse the signs. However, once there is tartar build up, a professional scale and polish will be needed under anaesthetic, to remove the calculus and allow the vet to assess the entire mouth with a dental probe to check what is going on beneath the gum line. As so much of the damage is often below the gum line your vet may also need to take dental x-rays.

Kenzo’s Diaries – A Dogs Life This week has been full of fun! I’ve been very busy helpin’ all my ‘hoomans’ with jobs around the house, such as sweepin’ the floors, mowin’ the grass and obviously, one of my favourites, gardenin’. But I also did lots of things just for me!

There are some lovely wildflower meadows near me, that my ‘hoomans’ have found.

They are so excitin’ to run through and I just love to jump, jump, jump up above them, so my ears flap in the wind. My ‘hoomans’ also seem to love it because they always try and take ‘pikturs’ of me. I run straight at them, to make sure they can see my best jumpin’ skills. I wish they would take me there every day.

Besides all my crazy jumpin’, I’ve also been doing lots of trainin’ this week, which really does tire me out. I learnt a new trick!

It’s so simple, but I kept being told I was “Such a clever boy”; I don’t know why my ‘hoomans’ think it’s so hard. Anyway, back to my new skill, basically all I have to do is, when my ‘hoomans’ say “Bel”, I have to hit this ‘dingy’ thing and then I get a treat. So easy. I was a little nervous at first, because I didn’t know if the ‘dinging’ was a good thing, but as soon as I realised it meant treat, I didn’t stop. I just kept hittin’ it over, and over again until there were no treats left.

I think this might be my new favourite game!

Cadmore End and Fingest Circular Walk The Chilterns Conservation Board and Chiltern Society have developed a series of 23 walks across the Chilterns which are social-distance friendly, avoiding crowded honey-pot locations and narrow paths where possible. This walk is one of them and takes advantage of good paths in hilly countryside with some lovely views.

4. Take the footpath immediately right. This is a pretty path with views across to Hanger Wood.

At the end of the path, go right through woods towards Gravesend to a path junction just before a lane.

Food & drink: The Chequers in Fingest Route 1. Walk past the village hall and church, then turn right. Follow the track beside the gate, passing a shady pond with a wooden seat to a path junction.

2. Keep left, walk down a stony track and take the right hand path into woodland to a wooden notice board. Keep on this path which soon goes downhill emerging on to open fields with a lovely view towards Skirmett. Walk downhill, go over a stile and turn right to a lane in the village of Fingest.

3. Turn left along the lane and turn right through a gate into the church yard. On the right there is a small brick paved area with a sundial which makes a good coffee stop. Follow the path past the church and go through the gate into the lane. Turn right along the grass verge and, almost immediately, bear right through a gateway to a

5. Turn immediately left along the bridleway which soon comes out into open fields. Follow this path for 800m to a stony track on the right that leads towards Harecramp Cottages.

6. Take the track and, just before the Cottages, go right over a stile in the hedge. Cross an open meadow and go over the next stile into a lane.

Cross the lane to the footpath immediately opposite. Follow this path steady uphill and along to meet the grassy track at Waypoint 1. Turn left past the shady pond to return to the parking place just past the church.

Thame Players have been performing in Thame for over 75 years. A new book, That’s Entertainment, about the history of Thame Players, is just out.

Tony Long, author, says, ‘We’ve grown a lot, from the first production in 1944 to five of our own productions a year today – over 30 live performances. The theatre also hosts 30 visiting musical, comedy and drama shows a year and houses Thame’s only cinema, run by Thame Cinema For All. The book is illustrated with many photographs, from the earliest shows to Dick Whittington, the pantomime last December. The book also tells of theatre upgrades, from raked seating to a new foyer, bigger stage, improved lighting and technical facilities.

Tony adds, ‘We are proud of our theatre, which has become the modern, wellappointed venue we have today. The Players Theatre entertains over 10,000 people a year and is also used by community groups. Having achieved this much in the first 75 years, we look forward to our continuing success’.

Books of self-discovery The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse – Charlie Mackesy These illustrations of conversations between a boy, a mole, a fox and a horse have been shared across the world. As the author says, the characters “are all different, like us, and each has their own weaknesses. Stokenchurch Dog Rescue My name is Buzz; I’m a Husky Mix and i’m about 7 years old.

I found myself in the care of Stokenchurch Dog Rescue via the pound as an unclaimed stray. I have settled in well since my arrival and have become accustomed to the daily routines.

I am looking for a home who has had experience of the breed before as I need a lot of specialist care and regular grooming. During my time at Stokenchurch Dog Rescue I developed a fluid growth under my chin and had to have it drained, it has healed really nicely but I still have a few stitches where the growth was and I can be a little bit wary of people touching it.

I do know some basic commands such as sit and my carers tell me that I’m a very clever boy with potential to learn so much more with the right positive based training.

Alongside the open-door sessions, the library is also continuing to offer its successful home delivery / collection service that it ran during the lockdown period, to cater for those who would prefer not to visit enclosed public spaces, or for whom the revised opening hours cause difficulty.

So that we can be sure to get fully back to normal once the pandemic is over, we are urgently in need of more volunteers to work in the library and in several other roles. Bake your Own Bread is a staple food in the UK and can be part of a healthy balanced diet.

Wholegrain flours in bread have many benefits due to the natural fibre content and nutritional profile.

A daily fibre intake of 30g - as part of a balanced nutritious diet - can have lasting health benefits; especially when taken alongside other measures such as reducing alcohol, not smoking, minimising stress, taking regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight.

The health benefits of these measures include lowering the risks of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and bowel issues to name a few.

I am pleased to share a tasty and versatile Focaccia recipe for you to enjoy. It is super-easy to make.

Ingredients 700g Bread flour (try some granary or wholegrain flour or a mix of flours) 1 teaspoon salt 2x 7g sachets of dried Yeast (or equivalent fresh) Tepid water – to mix (approx. 500mls) Olive oil – 2 tablespoons Extra olive oil for greasing the tin and to brush the bread with

Method 1. Put the flour, salt and yeast in a bowl 2. Add the water and then the oil 3. Mix well to form a sticky dough (it should be a wet dough consistency that you cannot pick up) 4. Cover and leave in a warm place for 1 ½ hours 5. Grease a large roasting pan 6. Tip in the dough and spread until it covers the base of the tin 7. Sprinkle with salt, fresh/dried herbs, fresh/dried garlic and olive oil 8. Press in whole olives, baby tomatoes or anything else you fancy 9. Place in a hot oven 230c/450f/gas 8 until golden (about 12-15 minutes) 10.
