El arte es la experiencia del lujo silencioso

Art is the experience of silent luxury.

La tendencia en la moda llamada lujo silencioso tiene que ver con las experiencias sensoriales que transmiten las prendas que se identifican con este concepto: la sensualidad al tacto del cashmere, un bolso de cuero suave e impecablemente terminado, la caída de una tela de algodón orgánico y noble. En este sentido el arte es puro lujo silencioso. Es el lujo de poder conectarse desde lo sensible, desde el silencio de mirar con inteligencia y con la percepción abierta, dejarse penetrar por los sentimientos de quien creó la obra, por sus búsquedas; un ejercicio de pensar y al mismo tiempo entender los pensamientos de los artistas. No hay mayor lujo que convivir con arte, qué tristeza cuando las paredes están mudas y vacías. Y qué lujo abrir la mente a experiencias artísticas que tal vez no entendemos del todo, pero nos obligan a recorrer nuevos caminos de la sensibilidad y la mente, nos enriquecen la vida. Estos lujos suceden en silencio, sin estridencias, dentro de cada uno. Para ilustrar la idea de lujo silencioso elijo algunas obras de artistas con quienes trabajo en mi galería. Una obra de Sofía Bohtlingk que utiliza cemento como pintura. Sofia usa la superficie del cuadro para registrar una serie de movimientos horizontales con una brocha cargada de cemento. Luego con su dedo dibuja sobre el cemento casi seco y borra partes. Queda una superficie de tonos grises neutros, hermosamente modulada, que es el eco de sus movimientos.

Julián Terán creció en un pueblo, cerca del campo y sus enormes cielos. Le fascina pensar en mapas topográficos, cartográficos, dibujos de constelaciones, es decir los sistemas que los humanos han desarrollado para traducir territorios y espacios a sistemas visuales. Sus obras recientes remiten a planos de planetas y estrellas, están realizadas sobre lino, con materiales como carbón, tierra, cenizas volcánicas y toques minúsculos de brillantina.

La obra de Cynthia Kampelmacher trae el lujo de la concentración y el silencioso tiempo invertido. Cynthia parte de imágenes fotográficas que tomó hace años en una selva de Panamá. Las recorta con un bisturí, las colorea, a veces las dibuja con trazos minuciosos. Son obras que seducen por sus texturas y su gesto controlado y leve. Tienen que ver con la memoria: volver una y otra vez a la plenitud de un momento de fascinación con la naturaleza, pero encontrar que en cada iteración es diferente: la incapacidad de la memoria para reconstruir las sensaciones del momento vivido.

The trend in fashion called "silent luxury" is related to the sensory experiences conveyed by garments that identify with this concept: the tactile sensuality of cashmere, a soft and impeccably finished leather bag, the drape of an organic and noble cotton fabric. In this sense, art is pure silent luxury. It is the luxury of being able to connect from the sensitive, from the silence of looking with intelligence and open perception, allowing oneself to be penetrated by the feelings of the creator of the work, by their quests; an exercise in thinking and at the same time understanding the thoughts of the artists. There is no greater luxury than coexisting with art, how sad it is when walls are mute and empty. And what a luxury it is to open the mind to artistic experiences that we may not fully understand, but that compel us to traverse new paths of sensitivity and the mind, enriching our lives. These luxuries happen silently, without fanfare, within each one.

To illustrate the idea of silent luxury, I choose some works from artists I collaborate with in my gallery. One work by Sofía Bohtlingk, who uses cement as paint. Sofia uses the surface of the canvas to record a series of horizontal movements with a brush loaded with cement. Then, with her finger, she draws on the nearly dry cement and erases parts. What remains is a surface of beautifully modulated neutral gray tones, an echo of her movements.

Julián Terán grew up in a town, near the countryside and its vast skies. He is fascinated by the idea of topographic and cartographic maps, drawings of constellations, in other words, the systems that humans have developed to translate territories and spaces into visual systems. His recent works refer to plans of planets and stars, made on linen, with materials such as charcoal, earth, volcanic ash, and tiny touches of glitter.

The work of Cynthia Kampelmacher brings the luxury of concentration and the silent time invested. Cynthia starts from photographic images she took years ago in a jungle in Panama. She cuts them out with a scalpel, colors them, and sometimes draws them with meticulous strokes. These works captivate with their textures and their controlled and gentle gesture. They have to do with memory: returning again and again to the fullness of a moment of fascination with nature, but finding that with each iteration, it is different: the inability of memory to reconstruct the sensations of the lived moment.
