Last year, Chicago United celebrated its 40th anniversary. It was a year in which we paid tribute to the business visionaries, elected officials, and community advocates who helped us get this far in our mission to bridge the gap between race and business. low corporate earnings, diversity and inclusion advocates are paying close attention to business trends. Are companies lowering projections for the promotion of people color? Are corporations decelerating their efforts to grow business with minority-owned enterprises? Fortunately, the evidence seems to indicate that the progress we’ve made on the diversity and inclusion front hasn’t halted.

The consumers who increasingly make purchasing and investing decisions based on a company’s corporate social responsibility record are the same ones who care about that company’s track record in business diversity. Our involvement in various diversity programs can help internal champions better support their organization’s goals and better realize their desired outcomes. We assert that diversity should not simply be an ‘initiative,’ but must truly be incorporated as part of the fabric of the organization.

An event forty years in the making. 5th Annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference, Bridge Awards and 40th Annual Gala

It’s not often you can see forty years of history and forty years of progress in the same room. And it was hard not to wonder what a visitor from 1968, especially an emerging leader of color, might have thought looking at the sheer number of senor executives in attendance and the displays charting the successes of Chicago United’s four decades of service. The 5th Annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference and 40th Anniversary Gala took place on Thursday, December 4th, at the Hilton Chicago. Under the theme of ‘Torchbearers of the Dream: Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future’, the event was part networking, part workshops, and part celebration of Chicago United’s unique success as an organization at the forefront of empowering business diversity. Highlights of the day included: • Diversity Leadership Luncheon • Where we examined the results of our 2008 Corporate Diversity Profile Survey • A keynote address by George Herrera, President & CEO, Herrera-Christina Group, Ltd. which resonated with those in attendance • I nteractive Workshops throughout the afternoon, such as… • Effective Mentoring Relationships • Quantifying the connection between Diversity and Organizational Performance • Recruiting and Retaining Emerging Executives • Building Minority Businesses of Scale • A Pre-Gala Networking Reception featuring a commissioned artistic display of Chicago United’s impact segmented by decade throughout

• A performance by Luna Negra Dance Theater • Music by The Chicago Sinfonietta • P resentation of the 2008 Bridge Award to Indra K. Nooyi, Chairman and CEO, PepsiCo Over the last four years our Bridge Awards dinner has become a not-to-be-missed event on Chicago’s social and business calendar, but our 40th anniversary gala was something even more significant. It brought together the most diverse assembly of past, present and emerging leaders of all races and ethnicities. All there for one reason: to show how far we have come in regards to socio-economic equality and how much farther we plan to go. The National Bridge Award is given to one leader that exemplifies this commitment to multiracial diversity at the very highest levels of corporate America. 2008’s award was presented to Indra K. Nooyi, Chairman and CEO, PepsiCo for being an innovative champion for diversity in governance, management, and business partnerships.

The 2008 Corporate Diversity Profile Our biannual Corporate Diversity Profile measures the racial composition of corporate boards and executive level management. Launched in 2001, it was the first survey of its kind to examine racial diversity specifically in the leadership ranks of large corporations. The 2008 survey is the 5th installation, providing further benchmarking of our city’s progress towards inclusion at the highest levels of our business community. On their own, the surveys are compelling point-in-time assessments, revealing our community’s readiness to remain competitive in the global war for talent, as well as enabling us to compare our successes against other national and global cities. As a group, the Corporate Diversity Profiles serve to chart our rate of change. 2008’s survey had some positive news for Chicago: It revealed that our rates of inclusion were equal to or better than peer cities. The city continues to rank in the top five for Fortune 500 headquarters and our corporate community is comparable to that of the nation’s top cities in regard to senior executives of color.

The 2008 report presented a call to action challenging Chicago’s corporate community to incorporate specific recommendations in their diversity programs as a roadmap to success towards creating sustainable diversity and inclusion while strengthening the talent pipeline of the workforce. By focusing on talent management, retention and accountability when implementing strong diversity and inclusion initiatives, Chicago’s corporate community can accelerate equal representation in business leadership and maintain a competitive advantage in the global war for talent. Many thanks to Kevin Connelly, Chairman, Spencer Stuart, who served as the program Chair and hosted the Corporate Diversity Profile Luncheon; to Ernst & Young for collecting the confidential survey data; and to the Federal Reserve Bank for providing forecasting.
