Chicago United Advocacy in Action Published October 2018
Chicago United’s 2018 Inside Inclusion Featuring the Corporate Diversity Profile is the most complete review of the status of diversity and inclusion progress in Chicago’s top corporations. The report evaluates the top-level findings on gains and losses in diverse representation in leadership in the city’s top 50 publicly held corporations and illuminates current trends affecting the executive suites and the talent pipeline. The report also provides an assessment scorecard for leaders to track progress and identify steps forward for corporations in their diversity and inclusion efforts. There have been modest gains in minority representation at the board level in the last six years, but minority representation in the executive ranks is higher in Chicago United member companies. Representation of ethnic minorities in Chicago’s Top 50 companies in 2018 is closer to national benchmarks at both the board level and executive ranks, except for Asian executives where more representation is shown nationally.

• March 1 – Gloria Castillo attended an event hosted by the University of Illinois Chicago Great Cities Institute, titled “The Kerner Report: 50 Years Later.” Dr. Fred Harris, an original (and last surviving) member of the Kerner Commission was the keynote speaker, followed by a panel discussion. Individuals on the panel included: Timuel Black, civil-rights activist and historian, José Lopez of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, Willie J.R. Fleming of the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign, and Anthony Lowery of the Safer Foundation. • March 22, 2018 – Castillo was the keynote speaker at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for the Women’s Impact Network. She gave the Women’s History Month keynote about courageous conversations. • April 11 – Chicago leaders gathered to celebrate Leadership Greater Chicago’s 35th Anniversary. • April 16 – The Economic Club of Chicago welcomed author and WBEZ South Side reporter Natalie Y. Moore for the club’s inaugural Author Discussion Series. • April 25 – The Chicago Minority Supplier Development Council hosted its 51st Annual Chicago Business Opportunity Fair.
• June 2 – Castillo attended the 2018 Latina Expo, a national platform produced by Imagen Marketing Consultants, a Chicago-based multicultural marketing agency. • Sept. 22 – Castillo contributed an article about inclusion as a leadership competency to the Association Forum • Sept. 30 – Castillo was presented with the Chicago Latino Network (CLN) Diversity Champion Award for her commitment to diversity and inclusion. This CLN Award recognized her accomplishments toward advancing multiracial leadership in corporate business to achieve parity in economic opportunity for people of color. • Oct. 6 – Chicago United was presented with a proclamation from Cook County. Board of Commissioners President Toni Preckwinkle introduced the proclamation in chambers. Leaders Council Member Jacki Robinson-Ivy, Senior Vice President of Northern Trust, participated in the presentation, and CEO Council Member Stuart Strahl, President & CEO of the Chicago Zoological Society, gave remarks. • Oct. 25 – Castillo was interviewed on PushHER TV where she discussed Chicago United’s 50th Anniversary Gala and gave advice to young women about climbing the corporate ladder.
• Oct. 27 – Castillo was on iHeartMedia (KISSFM, Inspiration 1390, LITE FM, V103, WGCI, and BIG 95.5) to discuss the history of Chicago United, the state of diversity in Chicago’s business community and the 50th Anniversary Gala.
• Dec. 3 – Castillo attended the Illinois Bicentennial in her capacity as the Illinois Bicentennial Commission Co-Chair and celebrated all that is great in Illinois: our history, our people, and our communities. • Dec. 10 – Castillo talked on air with Craig Dellimore from WBBM-AM, MarySue Barrett of the Metropolitan Planning Council, and Ghian Foreman of the Greater Southwest Development Corporation, about the many challenges facing Chicago’s next mayor and how voters should judge the wide field of candidates.

Each year, Chicago United selects a National Thought Leader in Inclusion; an individual who has become a unique voice for diversity, equity and inclusion in Chicago or nationally. In our 50th anniversary year, we welcomed Chicago-born Oscar, Grammy and Emmy-winning artist and founder of the Common Ground Foundation, Common, as our 2018 National Thought Leader. Through his business and philanthropic endeavors, Common advocates for racial and ethnic equity and social justice.
Common shared insights about his life, work and leading figures such as Dr. Maya Angelou and Ambassador Andrew Young. In one of many stories Common shares with Gloria, he talks about a post-rehearsal gathering for the film Selma which Young visited. According to Common, “We stood around him and he said, ‘What are you willing to die for? Live for that.’ And he said this was the philosophy of the people of the civil rights movement. ‘We were willing to die for freedom, for justice and for equality, so we lived for it.’”

Chicago Unites Concert
The Chicago Unites Concert engaged our member companies’ employee resource groups (ERGs), with 15 ERGs volunteering at this event.

Chicago United and the Chicago Sinfonietta collaborated to produce a free concert celebrating diversity, equity and inclusion in recognition of Chicago United’s 50th Anniversary and the Sinfonietta’s 30th Anniversary.
Chicago Unites was our gift to the city. The concert marked the first time the Chicago business and arts communities had come together to promote unity, diversity and inclusion with a free concert. Business leaders and residents from throughout Chicagoland came together at Pritzker Pavillion in Millennium Park for a musical celebration of the city’s diverse people and diverse business community. The program focused on the mix of cultures in Chicago with a message of inclusiveness and unity. Family program activities took place in the “Unity Village” prior to the concert, featuring diverse young performers. The Check Your Blind Spots bus, an initiative of CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™, was also onsite during the event. The bus helps people experience ways to mitigate unconscious bias in their everyday lives.

Chicago United Exclusive Member Programs CEO Breakfast Series
A new concept was developed by the Membership Committee to invigorate member engagement. Based on the positive response from two pilot sessions, the Chicago United Board of Directors hosted a series of events for CEO Council members. Each breakfast was limited to 10 participants to ensure meaningful dialogue. These peer-led breakfasts provided a unique opportunity for senior executives to engage in private conversations driven by immediate issues of race and business.

Chicago United hosted two 90-minute Diversity Officer Roundtables about current trends and leading practices in diversity and inclusion. During these roundtables, the participants shared knowledge among peers and across industries in an intimate group setting of approximately 20-25 professionals. These roundtables resulted in new ideas and concepts that can advance an organization’s current diversity and inclusion practices.
We kicked off the 2018 series on March 7 with PwC’s Chief Purpose Officer, Shannon Schuyler, and a discussion about the impact of CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™. This landmark coalition is the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion within the workplace.
The second session took place on June 27, 2018. This roundtable was titled “Toward Inclusion: Strategies for Engaging Muslim Colleagues.” Husna T. Ghani, a strategy and communications consultant in the fields of education, technology, and business development, spoke on the topics of diversity and inclusion in the workplace specifically for American Muslims. Ghani’s dialogue-based presentation addressed the education, solutions, and benefits of engaging your Muslim team members and clients.
