MENTAL HEALTH
“La terapia es pa ’ locos”; a common statement that gets thrown around in our Latine communities But what is the history behind that statement? Who demonized talking about feelings and grief? Where did our gente hear the negative stigma that limits us as individuals from being human and asking for skillful help? If professional help is accessible, why do we struggle to accept it?
What if I told you that colonization stripped our communities of the therapeutic practices that our ancestors created? Therapy was practiced in our communities long before and was embraced as part of their lives Our ancestors sought therapy from the town’s Curander@, who provided a safe, therapeutic, and sacred space to be heard, and to consult about their feelings. They ensured their patients would also leave with a wise consejo, ruda, and flores blancas for herbal baths, a remedy for aches, and an amulet para el mal de amores.
Even though our people are resilient and strong, creating and maintaining mental health awareness is crucial to our community because we deserve support and healing, whether at a collective or individual level.
My name is Andrea, your therapy girly! I am a psychotherapist and Founder of Therapy Vibes. I come from a lineage of healers, which made sense when I found the Psychology and Mental Health field fascinating and essential. Therapy Vibes aims to be a sacred space for our gente to find validation, and selfexploration and where you will embark on a journey to inner work, healing, self-love, and personal development

Amidst the bustling streets of Chicago, where towering skyscrapers dominate the skyline, and the perpetual buzz of construction fills the air, resides a determined Latina named Sheyla Padilla. From her earliest years, Sheyla was captivated by the world of buildings and architecture. Coming of age in the closeknit community of Humboldt Park, she witnessed the transformation of her neighborhood as old structures were dismantled and replaced by new ones in the gentrification sweeping through the area.
SHEYLA SHEYLA PADILLA PADILLA
Despite facing numerous challenges with her initial acquisition in 2005, including financial struggles and contractor fraud, Sheyla's determination remained unshaken. Even when she encountered another setback in 2007, followed by a furlough in 2010, and the subsequent loss of both properties in 2013, Sheyla was not deterred. Instead, she emerged from these trials with a renewed strength and a stronger resolve. Her unwavering determination and indomitable spirit of resilience propelled her to embark on a mission to conquer the realm of construction
Sheyla's entry into entrepreneurship in 2015 was marked by a distinct approach. Partnering with George Ortiz, a seasoned Latino developer at GMO Properties LLC, Sheyla introduced cutting-edge technology, systems, rigorous compliance measures, and effective risk management strategies to expand their business operations. Their unique naming convention for projects led to the establishment of Agem Construction LLC, a woman and minority-owned licensed General Contractor Their vision was clear: to build high-quality apartments and promote healthy living environments in underserved and disinvested communities

“MY JOURNEY” FROM MARINE AVIATION SPECIALIST TO CO-FOUNDER OF FRANCO HAULING
My first encounter with logistics was when I was 18 years old and joined the Marine Corps as an Aviation Supply Specialist The day I reported to my first unit, I was informed that I would be deployed within 28 days. During my deployment, I was responsible for managing over $30 million worth of equipment and gear for the Marine Corps. I quickly became fascinated with the complexity of transporting equipment between overseas locations and the United States, especially while in a warzone. This experience was a turning point for me; I realized that my role was bigger than myself. It was a personal mission to protect the nation that had given my family and me the freedom to pursue our dreams. This duty to serve and give back has been a guiding principle throughout my career.
After my military service, I joined the Federal Aviation Administration, where I worked in the Planning and Requirement Group This role allowed me to see how projects take shape from concept to completion. I learned about the importance of behind-the-scenes tasks such as site preparation, which are crucial for initiating any project. During this time, my brother and business partner, Hector Franco, was working as a dedicated truck driver.
Our combined experience and passion for logistics led us to establish Franco Hauling LLC. This venture aligned perfectly with our skills and aspirations, and it allowed us to make a significant impact in the industry
As a Latina business owner, I bring a unique perspective to the logistics and construction hauling industry Raised by immigrant parents, I understand the value of hard work, dedication, and resilience. My parents left their home country, sacrificed their comfort, and worked tirelessly to provide for us Their grit and determination have been ingrained in me, and I strive to make them proud every day. These values have equipped me with the tenacity to overcome challenges, such as being a Latina woman in a male-dominated field Embracing my identity and believing in myself has transformed my career and personal life. I apply the honest morals and hardworking ethics instilled in me by my parents, Eustaquio and Graciela Franco, to run Franco Hauling LLC successfully
Establishing and maintaining business relationships is crucial for us at Franco Hauling LLC. Hector's 20 years of industry experience have built a foundation of trust and reliability with our clients and suppliers. Open communication is vital, and we ensure that all parties are aligned and satisfied with the progress of our projects. Our dedication to customer service and timely project completion has been instrumental in our growth We also prioritize safety and compliance, holding regular meetings with our drivers to discuss improvements and the importance of responsible CDL license management
Looking ahead, we are excited about the future of the construction hauling industry, especially with the opportunities presented by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal. This legislation will help rebuild our roads, bridges, and rails, creating more jobs and opening new avenues for growth We have already expanded into supplying aggregates, providing a broader range of services to our customers. Our commitment to sustainability includes transitioning to a paperless system to minimize waste We remain vigilant and open-minded, always exploring new possibilities for expansion For other Latinos interested in starting their own construction hauling business, my advice is to embrace your uniqueness, overcome your fears, and stay focused on your goals The journey may be challenging, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

As early as I could remember, my dad was the first to introduce me to those large road maps that stretched across the car dashboard when we were prepping for our family road trips The curiosity of all these connecting routes that would soon lead us to another destination opened my heart to the love for travel. With the spontaneity of waking up in a new environment, whether covered in palm trees or city lights filled with skyscrapers and Lady Liberty, my dad knew that his excitement in taking us somewhere new would soon become infectious These are core memories that I am so privileged to have experienced at a young age
Fast forward to my high school graduation gift, and my dad is showing up with yet another surprise It gave me a trip with my sister and two friends to our first trip out of the country, landing in Antigua four girls with shaky driving abilities under our belts. We were not skilled enough to get us going on the opposite side of the road without scraping some arms on bushes along the way to a bonfire and cookout with the locals Connecting with people on the island was a fantastic experience I’ll never forget an islander named Aloma Hill, who took us under her wing and showed us around while flaunting the beaded braids she so delicately styled that we so proudly wore Aloma was also very well-known with tourists as she beamed with pride in showing us all the postcards she received from people she had met worldwide This impressed me because something some may believe to be so minor, such as photos from various countries, can leave such a lasting impression. This was the first of many trips and worldly experiences I would soon begin to carve a path forward
Through so many experiences in booking my travels and researching to death, what I could maximize while at a destination was always par for the course for me. I truly enjoyed learning before and during my trips, so much so that my now extended family has come to rely on me to coordinate family group trips This dynamic led me to connect with Melissa Zenteno from Vacation with Melissa Connecting and reconnecting over the years on our family group travels 20+ would be met with such ease that I would always throw in, well, if you ever need someone to help part-time, I’m your girl! When I first threw out this idea, Melissa was not ready to take on anyone just yet, but soon enough, an opportunity came knocking as we were working together on yet another family trip I recall Melissa saying, you know you can do this line of work, and I jumped at the opportunity and was ready. My fascination for travel has always been there from a very young age, and now, to come full circle and help other families create lasting memories is a bonus that I didn’t even see coming I love hearing about our traveler’s experiences! I get to live vicariously through them as well as learn from them With venturing into travel, my world has cracked open even more comprehensively. I attended my first travel forum this year, and seeing how many travel agents, suppliers, and tour operators have been in this business gives me such encouragement It fills me with even more curiosity and excitement
Why should I book through a travel agent?i
Many ask, why go through a travel agent, given there are online travel sites for direct booking? My answer is quite simple – people like to receive recommendations, be treated with excellent service, and ensure they are taken care of wherever they travel, which is an advantage of booking with a travel agent We create relationships with our suppliers that provide travelers with a great experience. This business, as well as many others, is built upon relationships you make and cultivate to create lasting memories and good business relationships
