Get Out and Speak Up Our community is blessed with a range of wonderful leaders. We need to hear from them to maintain a thriving community. Here’s how we can help.

I

realize it’s a theme I return to often, but it’s one at the core of our mission for the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and one that I’m proud to speak about: Leadership. Our mission at the Chamber is to help the community connect, learn and grow. We cannot do that without leaders. I’m blessed to know and work with a wide variety of leaders in our community and I’m constantly amazed at how different they are. August offers a chance to focus on the future and cross the threshold of new opportunities — and opportunity is Chesterfield’s middle name. I know quiet leaders, who say little or speak softly. They lead through their example and their actions, empowering others to advance a cause, a task or a project. I know vocal leaders, who have the gift of pulling together a game plan, articulating the tasks that need to be accomplished and creating the assignments to those required. I also know mentors — those individuals who lead by serving as sounding boards for those of us seeking personal or professional direction. We need them all and we need them here in the Chamber — more active members and residents — speaking up about what they see in our community. Is the city moving in the right direction? Is the Chamber? We cannot know unless we hear from our residents and constituents. The ones who speak up and speak out are the leaders.

LD E I F R E T S A E C H M C Y Y L I M A F

THE WEST COUNTY YMCA IS NOW THE CHESTERFIELD YMCA!

And we have ways to help cultivate leadership in the community. For example, the Chamber’s Leadership Chesterfield program will be launching a new class on Sept. 14. The eightmonth program invites up to 20 residents to participate one day per month, rotating through a daylong workshop that explores each of the many components of what makes Chesterfield function: government, education, health care, nonprofits, commerce and more. Without fail, those who Nora Amato participate in the program come away with a deeper understanding of how the community ticks. But more than that, they understand how their leadership can play a part. Plus, they make good friends along the way. You’ll find mini-profiles of the latest Leadership Chesterfield class on page 33 of this edition. But that’s not the only upcoming opportunity to cultivate your leadership skills. Check out the events page in this edition on page 18, where you’ll find details about the Chamber’s third annual Leadership Conference. Our agenda will be jammed with discussions, presentations and Q&A with some inspiring leaders in the community. The daylong workshop is open to anyone — but Chamber members participate at a discount. Contact me to learn how you can participate in both programs — and more. Our malls, businesses, restaurants and hotels need local activities happening in our community for them to thrive. Unless we speak up — as community leaders — our local economy will struggle. So, please: Get out and get active!

And the Survey Says…...

The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce surveyed members this year about their needs from the organization. The results were eyeopening.

A

s the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce board of directors embarked on another year of programming, activities and engaging opportunities for Chamber members, we decided to solicit your feedback for this year and for the future. For the Chamber to be a valuable asset to you and your business, we wanted to get the thoughts, ideas and input of our most valuable asset—our members. Therefore, we conducted a survey of Chamber members early this year and the results were very revealing. Nearly 100 Chamber members took part in the survey. We asked questions designed to help give the board a clearer picture of why members join the Chamber and what we can do to provide members with the necessary programs and activities that will be most beneficial for you and your business. Questions such as “Why did you or your company join the Chesterfield Chamber?” and “What is important to you as a Chamber member?” resulted in powerful Brian Voyles responses that are causing the board to reevaluate our current programs and activities. The survey questions and results were as follows (several questions encourage survey takers to “click all that apply”): “Why did you or your company join the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce?” Eighty-five percent of all responders said they joined to promote their business; 81 percent of all responders said they joined for networking events; while only 32 percent joined for business education programs. “What is most important to you as a Chamber member?” Eighty-nine percent of responders said networking opportunities were most important; 44 percent said social events were most important; and 29 percent said educational opportunities were important. chesterfieldmochamber.com

“How satisfied are you with the current Chamber programs?” Seventy-seven percent of responders were satisfied with the current networking opportunities; 65 percent were satisfied with the current business promotion opportunities; and 58 percent were satisfied with the social event opportunities. “What, if any, changes would you like to see?” While 36 percent would like to see more business promotion opportunities, 33 percent were satisfied with the amount offered; 32 percent would like to see more networking opportunities, 41 percent were satisfied with the current level of networking events. “How do you picture the Chesterfield Chamber in the year 2021? What is your vision?” Thirty-nine percent of responders want to see continued growth of the chamber, with comments like “…become the largest Chamber in the state…” or “…grow to over 1,000 members…” Twentyseven percent of responders want continued and increased opportunities for networking and business promotion: “…more integration between member businesses…” “…connecting leaders with growing businesses…” “…liaison for businesses to see and be seen…” Thank you to everyone that participated in the survey. As we continue to analyze and process the results, the Chamber board has committed to implementing your feedback and making necessary changes to align the Chamber programs with member needs. After all, your input matters.

Brian Voyles is the general manager of the Chesterfield Mall and the 2017 chairman of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce.

Students Promote Social Justice

One of the extracurricular activities at Parkway West gives students a chance to learn through the eyes of others. By Gabriel Weber Parkway West High Pathfinder

W

ith 62 school-sponsored extracurricular programs at Parkway West High School, there is one that discusses current social justice issues and how to fix them at school. “We are putting in the effort to make our school a place that is suitable for everyone. Not enough people are represented, not everyone is taken care of,” junior Alyssa Foy said. “I wanted to make a difference and influence how diversity is viewed in our school.” The Social Justice League’s student run counterpart Superintendent’s Social Justice Leadership Advisory Council (SSJLAC) meets five to six times a year at the Instructional Services Center and advocates for social justice issues as well. The difference: Students must apply to join the council of eight members. “(SSJLAC) really is for everyone and it is helpful to students for getting along and learning from each other. When social justice topics come up, people think more of giving their opinion, but it is also listening because listening is learning,” sponsor Carly Roach said. “Listening is underrated because you always learn something when talking to anyone because they are different than you no matter what. It is always good to consider another perspective.” Social justice efforts continue to take form through a variety of events. For example, the Social Justice League and SSJLAC collaborated in November on “Seeing Through A Different Lens Day,” in which

10

Out & About | July-September 2017

social justice club members raised $105 for West Chest, an organization to help in-need students, by selling stickers to students. “The stickers allowed participants to wear sunglasses during the day, to remind people to look at others through empathetic eyes and see beyond stereotypes. (The day) helped (us) to learn other’s stories, understand where they are coming from, and feel like you are working toward a climate of compassion towards all,” Boles said. Although numbers in the club have since dwindled from the beginning of the year from 20 down to around six students because of spring activities and scheduling confusion, freshman Autumn Davenport has been with the club since the beginning of the year. She became aware of Social Justice League and SSJLAC when she moved from Florida, and is the only freshman member. “It is kind of intimidating to be the only freshman,” Davenport said. “It can be uncomfortable because I feel like I am the only one with my opinions because I am more conservative, but that doesn’t stop me from speaking my mind.” One of the goals for SSJLAC and the Social Justice League is supporting the students and acquiring leadership skills, while increasing their knowledge of history, politics and culture that contribute to students’ futures. “I have learned from the students that attend SSJLAC and the Social Justice League just how much discrimination and stereotypes affect their lives. It is very valuable to be reminded by them about how hard it still is to be a minority and to face suspicion and judgement based on innate characteristics,” Boles said. “But these are the students that give me hope for the future because they are full of passion and knowledge and they will be leaders in college and beyond.”

The Miller of Woods Mill Isaac Woods owned a great deal of property in the area and drew farmers from miles away to mill their grain. By Ann Chrissos

I

saac Woods was one of the early settlers of the Chesterfield area. He owned land on the west side of what is now Woods Mill Road both north and south of Conway Road. His neighbors included the Bauers, Conways and Sellenricks. St. Louis County land records show that he was a noted land surveyor for many years. He surveyed much of the land in the Chesterfield area. He also farmed his extensive land holdings. His original tract of Ann Chrissos land extended from Woods Mill Road to White Road and wrapped around the one acre site of the Old Bonhomme Church, which is still standing. On April 26, 1834, he purchased additional

land on the southwest corner of Conway and Woods Mill Roads. Although Woods’ surveying and farming endeavors were important to the area, it was his grist mill that inspired the naming of a road in his honor. According to author William Thomas, Isaac Woods built a grist mill about 1 mile north of Conway Road, which operated on water power. A dam was constructed on Creve Coeur Creek across the road from the mill and a mill-race carried the water to the wheel. A mill-race was a series of sluices that redirected the water when a shallow, slow-moving stream like Creve Coeur Creek was dammed. Farmers came from miles around hauling their sacks of wheat in wagons or on horseback to have Mr. Woods grind their grain into flour. When the mill was in operation, it emitted a constant rumble caused by the regular turning of the wheel and of the grinding stones. The farmers’ sons were fascinated by the “incomprehensible ORTHOPEDICS NOW! action of grinding grain, separating into flour, shorts

and bran” (Thomas). In the course of each week, there were grinding days and days when the mill was at rest. Isaac Woods died on July 18, 1880. He left a widow, Amanda, and three sons: David, James B. and Isaac Jr., as well as considerable acreage in Chesterfield and Lawrence County, Mo. David was also a miller who worked at a Creve Coeur mill until it was destroyed by fire. He eventually moved to Jonesburgh, Mo., where he served as a deacon at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church until his death in September 1932. He is buried in the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. David’s brother, James B. Woods, became a surveyor and farmer like his father, but he lived and worked in another Missouri county. Isaac Jr. continued to work and live on his father’s Chesterfield farm. Isaac Woods and his family have left their mark on Chesterfield and neighboring communities. Woods Mill Road, named for Isaac and his mill, is one of the oldest roads in the area. Isaac Woods (1804-1880) and his son, Isaac Jr. (1850-1931), are buried in the Old Bonhomme Church Cemetery on Conway Road.

A Path to Success and Growth 10 business fundamentals that can help business leaders overcome growing pains, maximize their company’s potential and accelerate growth. By Cindy McDaniel

A

re you a business owner? A CEO? Or another high-level leader? What are your plans for achieving success and growth? From the startup phase to a mature and growing organization, from a small team to a large enterprise—what must you accomplish to overcome growing pains? What must you sustain to reach maximum potential? Consider these 10 basic foundations every business leader must execute on to optimize effectiveness and accelerate growth. VIVID VISION: “Where” and “what” are you leading others to? A vivid vision is not a statement on a poster that hangs on the wall. A vivid vision is an explicit design for what your business will look like in three to five years, documented and evaluated quarterly.

PEOPLE: Have you identified the necessary skill sets for each role and written job descriptions? Are you delegating and getting things done through others? Are you engaging employees with growth opportunities? Every seat should be filled with the right person. Employees are your greatest assets. SALES AND MARKETING: Who are your target customers? Do they know who you are? Is your website, marketing material and sales strategy up to date? Are your sales goals clear? More sales is not the answer to every problem. Branding, messaging, visibility and “go to market” strategies are critical.

Cindy McDaniel

OPERATING STRUCTURE: Have you documented and maintained processes and procedures for every function? Did you build in quality control measures? Do you effectively transfer knowledge to team members? Are you problem solvers? Efficiency and quality drives employee and customer happiness. METRICS/KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS: Are you tracking and reporting data to help you make decisions and measure employee performance? Determining which metrics to track— and getting employees to adhere to it—can be challenging. Doing so will pay off. TECHNOLOGY: Are you getting the most out of your hardware and software? You must have reliable technology and you must ensure it’s doing what it was intended to do. FINANCIALS: Do you have comprehensive financial reporting in place? If you don’t know your numbers, you can’t make the best decisions for running your business. Aggregated top and bottom lines leave room for too many unknowns. You can’t track everything; track what’s important, by product and service. LEADERSHIP: Are you taking care of you? Are you

honing your leadership skills? Delegating? Strive to become irrelevant to your own organization. Let others lead, too. You take care of everyone else. Don’t overlook taking care of yourself. TOTAL COMPENSATION PACKAGE, INCLUDING BENEFITS: Do you know what your competitors are paying employees? Are sales people motivated to “hunt” and grow the business? Can you attract employees? Invest in employee development and don’t lose them to a competitor because of money. BUSINESS STRUCTURE AND INSURANCE PROTECTION: Are your articles of incorporation filed with the IRS? Do you have an intellectual property assignment agreement? Bylaws? Founder’s operating agreement? Prioritize the legal matters. Secure the future of your business. Protect employees, yourself and your family.

A collection of Chesterfield-focused news tidbits.

Minutes the cookie dough bakes at Half Baked Cookie Dough Co., which opened its Chesterfield-based food truck May 12. Owner Jennifer Naslund has space at 17409 Chesterfield Airport Road for food prep for the truck and plans to turn that into a retail location. Meet Our Newest Scholarship Winners

T

he Chesterfield Chamber awards scholarships to representatives of our local high schools each year. This year’s crop of recipients shows the leadership talent of the next generation. Bradley Bulczak, Marquette High Heading to Purdue University to study aerospace engineering. What were the important organizations and causes that you worked for while you were in high school and why? An important organization I worked with while in high school is called Neighborhood Houses and I worked with them to create a summer soccer camp for kids in the inner city of St. Louis. What is an important memory from high school that you will carry with you and why? My favorite memory from high school would be our senior lock-in. It was a lot of fun and I got to spend the night after my graduation with the people who I spent all my four years in high school with. What are your career ambitions—and why are you compelled to go in that direction? I want to be a part of advancing the technology of the human race. I look back in history at how far we have come with technology and it is truly mind boggling. I want to be a part of this lasting endeavor.

Katie Kersting, St. Joseph’s Academy Headed to Saint Louis University and for the honors program and the medical scholars program, majoring in biochemistry and hopefully Mandarin Chinese. What were the important organizations and causes that you worked for while you were in high school and why? I was a part of two service trips while at St. Joe: the first to Costa Rica to build bridges and clean beaches and the second to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity on building a house. I was also a part of a club at St. Joe called “Angel Outreach” that served food to those who are homeless and needed a warm meal at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Soulard, which was always fun to do every month. Lastly, for my senior service project I worked at Mercy Hospital on the pediatric floor, playing games with sick kids and helping brighten their days while staying in the hospital. I love to help people and make them smile and laugh, while also helping to better the St. Louis community and beyond. I was also working on my Silver and Gold Awards for Girl Scouts, and ended up hosting my Gold Award Project “11 A Day” at St. Joe during my Junior year. I love everything Girl Scouts stands for, as woman empowerment and building confidence in young girls is so incredibly important for this generation of children and young adults.

What is an important memory from high school that you will carry with you and why? I can 100 percent say that I will never forget my trip to China with my Chinese class a few summers ago. It was incredible to see all the incredible historic sights and try traditional Chinese cuisine as well as speak Mandarin with native Chinese people. My class and I had spent two years learning about the incredible history and culture of China, and being able to climb the Great Wall and eat a Peking duck dinner was life changing. What are your career ambitions—and why are you compelled to go in that direction? I plan to go to medical school after SLU, and pursue a career as a pediatric cardio-thoracic surgeon. Although my dad, a veterinarian who owns his own practice, hopes that I’ll turn around and take over his clinic one day, I am going to make my focus people rather than animals. I love working with children and hearing their contagious laughter, and I always knew I wanted to go into medicine and particularly surgery. It was only recently I decided why not mesh together my passion for working with children and surgery and become a pediatric surgeon. Melanie Wilmert, Parkway Central High Headed to Maryville University to become a high school math teacher. What were the important organizations and causes that you worked for while you were in high school and why? Some important organizations I was involved in during high school were the A Plus program, National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), International Thespian Society, Educators Rising, Parkway Spark! Teaching and Learning, and Senior Women. These organizations required copious amounts of community service and tutoring hours, which I happily completed, plus more. It is very important to me to help make my community a better place in any way, shape, or form whether it is fundraising for charity or tutoring at the middle or high school level to help others succeed to the best of their abilities.

What is an important memory from high school that you will carry with you and why? I will carry with me my trip to the state golf tournament. I have been a varsity golf player at my school since freshman year and I’ve worked extremely hard to get where I am now. My freshman year, I qualified for the district tournament. Sophomore year I qualified even further and went to the sectional tournament. My goal for junior year was, of course, to go to the state tournament. Unfortunately, at sectionals, I had my worst round of the year and did not qualify. I was devastated, but that failure only made me more determined to qualify for state my senior year. All summer I practiced and started preforming very well. Finally, my senior year, I qualified for state and I could not have asked for a better experience. It was very special for me to go to Columbia with my dad and coach and have them with me every step of the way. It was such a surreal experience that I will never forget. What are your career ambitions—and why are you compelled to go in that direction? I plan to become a high school math teacher. For the past two years, I have been in the Parkway Spark! Teaching and Learning program. This program/class is an experiential learning opportunity for students to learn about the career field that interest them in high school. Over the past two years I’ve had many professional development opportunities and learned about education and got to student teach! It was an amazing experience and confirmed my passion for teaching. Before I entered this program, I was unsure I wanted to teach, but I knew I loved math and kids, so I thought I would try it out. This program made me realize how much I like to help others succeed in a subject I excel at and I love seeing the success of the students. It makes me feel accomplished that I helped others and possibly make them like the subject a little more than they had before.

Athena Zeng, Marquette High Headed to The University of Texas at Austin with plans to double major in business honors and finance (hopefully, I can play club tennis and do some newspaper-related activities while I’m there, also). What were the important organizations and causes that you worked for while you were in high school and why? I was involved in National Honor Society, Model UN and Science Olympiad, but the two organizations most near and dear to my heart during high school were tennis and newspaper. I played varsity tennis all four years of high school, and I just have so many memories and stories I can look back at when I think about it. From the small things—like saying my score in a British accent in practice—to making it onto the podium at the state championships for doubles, tennis was truly amazing. It really helped me sharpen my competitive edge, but also just let me goof off with my close friends every day after school. I also really appreciated that it allowed me to represent both myself and my school in a non-academic way, something that added some more balance to my life. Newspaper is about equally important to me as tennis. It’s sort of both a class and an afterschool activity for us, so ever since I joined the staff as a sophomore, I’ve dedicated a very large amount of time to our publication. And this time was very well spent. I can’t advocate for a class like this enough. It forced me to step out of my shell and talk to students I would have never talked to on my own accord. It also gave me the opportunity to learn about these different sides of the school and the students I never knew prior to joining. We would have six-hour layouts, and then smaller ones around the big layout nine times a year, but we would endure it together and laugh together during the layouts. I received an irreplaceable family through newspaper.

Winning third at the state tennis championships with my doubles partner Ellie and receiving the Pacemaker for our 2015-2016 Messenger publication are two memories that instantly come to mind, but the greatest things about them were the little memories associated with them. I remember trying to explain the concept of memes to my coach at a Houlihan’s in Springfield the night before our first match. And I remember blissfully walking through the streets of Indianapolis during the NSPA conference. What are your career ambitions—and why are you compelled to go in that direction? I’m saying investment banking right now, but that could change. Definitely something business related, though. I considered the whole medicine thing, but I realized that I didn’t necessarily enjoy doing that kind of work. I was drawn to the business direction because I think it is a very broad field that will allow me to personalize it to my own interests.

Cutting Edge, with a Touch of History By Mary Shapiro Dr. Earl Larson has kept his dental practice at the forefront of technology in his industry. Meanwhile, he’s renovated an history Chesterfield building as his new headquarters.

B

oth Dr. Earl Larson and the historic building in which his Wildhorse Dental practice are located are institutions in the Chesterfield community. But both have changed a lot through the years.

The practice now is in a 4,500-square-foot building at 150 Long Road. Larson obtained degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of MissouriKansas City dental school and has been practicing dentistry for 35 years. Larson began his practice in the Chesterfield Village area in 1989 after partnering with his brother, Dr. Timothy Larson for several years in St. Charles County. He moved his practice to the Chesterfield Valley in 2000 and, when the old Walnut Grove complex at 240 Long Road where he had been located was torn down to make way for levee improvements, he acquired the 1908-vintage former St. Thomas United Church of Christ building. He has been modernizing it ever since. The final improvements have been in conjunction with infrastructure improvements that are part of the Edison Crossing development, he said. Since his days at Mizzou and UMKC School of Dentistry, almost everything to do with how dentistry is practiced has changed, Larson said. “We used to have to wait two weeks to get crowns made and, if we wanted them to last, they had to be gold,” he said. “Now, with Cerec CAD/CAM milling technology, we can produce durable, beautiful tooth-colored crowns and veneers in a little over an hour—and the quality is superb.” Updated Practice (and Building) His office also uses digital dentistry for implant case planning and Invisalign orthodontia to straighten teeth. He has been a pioneer in

digital X-rays for more than 20 years and was using complete digital records long before they were mandated by the Affordable Care Act. “Our first digital images weren’t even one megapixel, but we sure thought they were pretty good at the time,” he recalled. At his new site, Larson took on the challenges that an older structure brought because the result would have more character than a new building, he said. He took possession of his historic Chesterfield building on New Year’s Eve of 2010. “That night, we were doing demolition,” he said. “We moved in during 2011.” “Even a couple of years after we were in it, we’re still finding evidence in the building of the flood of 1993. We recently had to replace an electrical outlet in the sump pump pit outside the building and found mud from the flood in there.” He has a staff of three, with almost 50 years of combined dental experience between them. To keep on the cutting edge of his business requires an ongoing effort as well, he said. Larson attends more than 100 hours of continuing education per year. He is an alumnus of the L.D. Pankey Institute (a continuing education institute), having completed all six of their core curricula. He recently attended a five-day course in sleep dentistry and airway management, which will allow him to assist his patients who suffer from sleep apnea—and also relieve snoring—to get more restful sleep with the aid of dental appliances. He’s been on the allied health staff of St. Luke’s Hospital for more than 25 years and is a lead trainer for the Missouri Dental Association’s Expanded Function Dental Assisting/EFDA program. He’s past president of the Greater St. Louis @chesterfieldmochamber

Dental Society and is now serving as trustee for the St. Louis district for the Missouri Dental Association. Volunteer Work in the Community Larson also contributes to his community through several programs. “I’ve been with the Give Kids a Smile program since its inception in 2002 and have participated in the vast majority of clinics offered,” he said of the program that originated in St. Dr. Earl Larson Louis and allows for underserved children to receive dental treatment from volunteer dentists during two clinics a year. Larson also is very active with MOMOM—the Missouri Mission of Mercy—offered by the Missouri Dental Association Foundation and the Give Back a Smile program of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, which restores the smiles of victims of domestic abuse. He lives in Chesterfield with his wife, Tryla Brown Larson, who works for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Alliance Real Estate. His son Grant is a student at Mizzou, working on a degree in event planning and facility management, while daughter Erin is in cosmetology school and son Avery is in the confectionery business. Meanwhile, work continues on Larson’s building. The work includes making the building handicapped accessible. “It’s a challenge to retrofit a historic building like this, but it’s an area landmark,” he said. “Having previously been on staff for Surrey Place Assisted Living, I understand the challenges of ambulation that some of my patients have.” For those who want to witness first-hand how a modern dental office was fit into a remodeled church building, Wildhorse Dental will be hosting a Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event from 5-7 p.m. on July 20. There will be plenty of goodies and lots of giveaways for those in attendance.

A Wildwood resident, Hinders joined the chamber about a dozen years ago. “At the time, I worked for a different company and I thought I needed to create more networking opportunities, but I kept procrastinating on joining the chamber,” he said. A chance visit to Chamber headquarters and a chat with Schmelig convinced him to join. Over the years, he’s volunteered in numerous roles, including “Chamber Understanding City Operations,” a group that meets monthly with Chesterfield city administrators to exchange information to work together more effectively. “I enjoy what the chamber offers from a relationship-building standpoint,” Hinders said. “The chamber is valuable in so many ways — to promote your company and your role in the company.”

Gold in the Nation’s Pet Capital

P

roximity to its customer base, a stronger talent pool for employees and access to its supply chain motivated Solid Gold Pet’s relocation to Chesterfield, which is also something of a homecoming for its CEO. In late 2016, Chesterfield welcomed a new corporate neighbor to the community: Solid Gold Pet, which makes and markets “holistic” pet foods and treats. The move was the second in as many years for the company, founded in 1974. In 2014, the company moved from its longtime home of San Diego to Greenville, S.C., Bob Rubin before moving to the St. Louis area at 15455 Conway Road. Solid Gold CEO Bob Rubin says the region is “quietly becoming the pet capital” of the country, thanks to the number of petrelated companies with operations here. In addition to proximity to talent and a central location for its customer base, the company was also offered $438,083 in incentives under the state’s Missouri Works program for job creation, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The newspaper reported that the company would bring 25 jobs to Chesterfield, with another 25 sales associates located around the country. Out & About caught up with Rubin, who joined the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, to learn a little more about him, his company and the four-legged friends he brings to work with him every day. A quick read of your background doesn’t suggest a guy who aspired to lead a natural nutrition company focused on foods and treats for pets. How did you find your way to Solid Gold? I’ve been fortunate to have a nearly 30-year career thus far in consumer products and have been in the high-end, natural pet food category since 2008. One of the key lessons I learned early on in my career was to work at a company where you love the products and feel great about what the company

represents. This simple principle has helped guide my career choices, sometimes leading me to unexpected, yet phenomenal opportunities like the premium pet food category. Solid Gold creates such amazing products for the lifelong health of pets that I was very drawn to the company. Anytime I can help someone feed their pet better nutrition, I am happy. What’s been the biggest surprise since you became CEO of Solid Gold? The biggest challenge you’ve faced? The biggest, and coincidently, the most pleasant surprise for me is the number of consumers who have been fiercely loyal to the Solid Gold brand for decades. We often hear from current Solid Gold consumers that they feed our brand because that is what their family fed their childhood dog or cat. There’s some nostalgia in these stories, but these consumers also saw firsthand the power of Solid Gold’s nutrition. This leads to the other pleasant surprise, which is the vast number of consumer testimonials we receive about the longevity of pets eating Solid Gold. Consumers write us things like “my dog is 18 years old and thriving on Solid Gold.” For us, it doesn’t get any better than hearing from consumers whose pet is enjoying a long, healthy life on our products. What drove the company’s decision to move its headquarters from South Carolina to Chesterfield in 2016? That move came a few months after you joined the company, and your career has been largely tied to St. Louis-area companies. Was that a factor?

Greenville, S.C., is a beautiful city and I

enjoyed my time there. Unfortunately, there are few consumer products companies in the area. This fact made it difficult to recruit top-notch employee talent in key functions. While moving Solid Gold Pet to Chesterfield is convenient for me, my personal situation was not a factor. Being in the St. Louis area offers Solid Gold Pet three important advantages: 1. Access to strong consumer product talent, including individuals with pet food experience; 2. Closer proximity to our manufacturing partners (most of which are in Missouri and Kansas) and our Kansas City-based third-party logistics provider; and, 3. Being in the center of the country allows us better access to our customers, who are located throughout North America. Have you found that Chesterfield has lived up to your expectations? Yes, we have very much enjoyed our first eight months in Chesterfield. We have a beautiful, dog friendly office with easy parking and good neighbors. There are plenty of food and shopping options close to our office. You clearly saw an advantage to basing the company in a location with several competitors: Royal Canin, Nestlé Purina PetCare, United Pet Group, Nature’s Variety and Whitebridge Pet Brands. Why was that an advantage? St. Louis has quietly become the “pet capital” of the United States, with more pet companies located here than any other city in the country. As I mentioned above, St. Louis provides us access to top-notch consumer product talent, including people with pet food experience. But that was only one factor in our decision to relocate Solid Gold Pet to the St. Louis area. Closer proximity to our supply chain partners as well as being centrally located were two other critical factors. What do you want residents and business owners in Chesterfield to know about Solid Gold that wouldn’t be obvious from reading your website?

founder, Sissy McGill, is truly a pioneer in pet health. Inspired by her sheer passion for pets, Sissy created the first Solid Gold dog formula by studying pet nutrition and ingredients from all over the world. Her mission was simple – to create a pet food that contained natural and holistic ingredients to help dogs and cats enjoy a longer, healthier life. Sissy included superfoods like pumpkins, apples, carrots and blueberries, as well as high-quality proteins in her recipes from the very beginning. Of course, they weren’t called “superfoods” then, but she knew how to combine ingredients for the holistic health of the pet. What is interesting about the culture at Solid Gold? It appears from your website that dogs are welcome in the workplace. Anything else that sets the company apart? The culture of Solid Gold Pet is of the upmost importance to me. What I have attempted to do is to leverage only the very best of the various cultures I have experienced in my career prior to Sold Gold, while leaving the bad stuff behind. In this, we strive to have an open culture, meaning we encourage everyone in the organization to express their ideas and opinions. Further, we empower our team to openly— and respectfully—disagree with one another. I do not assume that I am right, so when I express my thoughts on a particular topic, I am looking for the team to tell me what they think and not just go along with my idea just because I am the CEO. This approach is fostered at all levels of the organization. Tell us about Toby and Moose. Any other pets in the Rubin household? Toby and Moose are chocolate labradoodles. They are half-brothers, sharing the same father. Toby is 9 years old and Moose just turned 8. They are amazing dogs and a huge part of our family. Toby and Moose are what I call “love dogs”... they love being loved and are always near us in our house. And, of course, they are Solid Gold Pet dogs – they eat our dry and wet food, use our awesome wellness supplement, SeaMeal, as well as enjoy our meaty treats.

Solid Gold Pet is the company that started the holistic pet food category back in 1974. Our chesterfieldmochamber.com

trauma recovery model to help wounded veterans reconnect with their families, their communities and each other.

My wife and I are lifelong residents of West County and we love it here. We’ve raised two boys, both of whom started playing hockey for the Chesterfield Hockey Association before the age of 5, and now they play at the collegiate level. We enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle including golf and of course, regularly taking our dogs on long walks.

Quite simply, we feel that it is important to be an active part of the community in which we work and to support it in any way we can.

Solid Gold’s headlines include mentions of several donations to local animal care organizations. Can we expect that to continue? What’s the company’s philosophy in its charitable work?

You were quick to join the Chesterfield Chamber. Why is that?

What do you see as the next steps for Solid Gold? It has been less than one year since we started talking to consumers about the magic that Solid Gold has had in its products for more than 40 years – 20 nutritionally dense superfoods along with high-quality proteins in every dry food recipe. These superfoods are specifically curated for the health and longevity of the pet. We will continue to increase our marketing efforts to make sure pet parents are aware of Solid Gold’s transformative nutrition and understand how our products can deliver lifelong health for their pets. Also, look for Solid Gold Pet to continue to expand its distribution footprint both domestically and internationally.

Supporting animal care locations is very important to us, be it local or outside of our area. In the last year, we’ve donated dog and cat food to nokill shelters in South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Most recently, we donated product to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry to help members of our community who are down on their luck and still want to keep their pets as a part of their family. We are in the process of donating a significant amount of food to Open Door Sanctuary in House Springs, Mo. Their facility and animals were impacted by the floods in our area in May. Solid Gold is also the exclusive food provider for Warrior Canine Connection, a nonprofit organization that leverages the healing power of dogs through its mission-based 32
