What’s the Secret to Getting the Most Out of Your Chamber Membership?

The year 2023 is here. With holiday celebrations and family gatherings in our rearview mirror, some view January as a time to take a breath and get back to our regular routines. Some see the turning of the calendar year as an opportunity to turn over a new leaf. Still others approach it with anticipation of possibilities and adventures to come.

For me, 2023 is especially exciting because I am taking on a new role as the board chair for the Chesterfield Regional Chamber. I am so honored to lead the board and energized to join my fellow directors as we focus on growing our membership, and supporting our local businesses and the community.

and strengthening my client relationships. Beyond the business advantages, being an active Chamber member is an opportunity to enrich your life personally. I recently joined the Chamber on its first group trip to Italy. The trip was fantastic. (Check out our story on page 12 for a trip recap and to see the beautiful photos.) Adding to the memorable travel experience was the opportunity to get to know people on a personal level. In my years in the Chamber, many of the professional relationships I’ve made have turned into lifelong friendships.

As we head into the new year, I know people have mixed feelings about resolutions. But if you are seeking to grow your business and expand your personal and professional networks while having a whole lot of fun, I encourage you embrace my mantra: Just show up.

My mission as the board chair is simple: to get our members more involved.

In my 15-plus years as a Chamber member and career as a financial advisor, I’ve learned this simple truth: People do business with people they know, like and trust.

To get the most out of your Chamber membership, you need to show up.

Come to our events. Get involved on a committee. Meet fellow members in person.

Making personal, face-to-face connections has always been the cornerstone to growing any business. But as our daily professional interactions are increasingly via email, text and Zoom, connecting in person has become a powerful competitive advantage.

Meeting fellow Chamber members is an opportunity to share your business challenges, connect with peers who may be experiencing similar struggles and learn how others are succeeding.

What’s more, every person you encounter is a potential referral for your business.

I can’t tell you how many times my clients ask me for recommendations for local services. Their requests run the gamut —from who to call to get a tree removed and which doctors and chiropractors I recommend, to which company I would use to replace an HVAC system. They ask me because they trust my opinion. When I refer a client to a Chamber member, they can feel confident that they are doing business with someone I’ve already vetted.

Offering these referrals obviously helps the local businesses I recommend, but it also benefits me. In providing resources for my clients, I am adding value to

Happy New Year!

La Dolce Vita

This past October, the Chesterfield Regional Chamber organized our first group tour. Thirty-seven of us, Chamber and community members, traveled to Italy’s Amalfi Coast with an optional excursion to Rome. In Italian, “la dolce vita” means the sweet life. The phrase truly captures Italians’ zest for life and mastery of the art of not rushing, stressing or obsessing over the little things.

Above: Chesterfield group tour of Ravello, Italy.

Lee and Becky Rottman enjoy a sunset dinner in Sorrento, Italy.

“It was a wonderful to travel with many of my friends in the Chamber, getting to know them better as well as meeting new friends. Italy is so beautiful and to visit there again was a long-time goal — my favorite is Capri! When you go, be sure to take the gondola ride and enjoy the cappuccino at the top. I love to travel and enjoy shopping. I did my best with the shopping and took a day to relax, get a massage and enjoy the view from our hotel. Thank you, Nora and Krysta, for making this trip possible. You made it delightful. Italy 2022 is one of my many blessings. Hoping to see Ireland next year!”

Judy Burch and David Weiss at dinner in Sorrento, Italy. Ed Balmes and Joanie Hitt exploring the Amalfi Coast. Krysta and Dan Hartbeck tour The Colosseum in Rome Italy. Halina Conti and Richard Terry with Julia, our tour guide at The Forum (main plaza of Pompeii).

While we were on a touring vacation — each day filled with history, beautiful sightseeing, cultural gems and food and wine like only Italy can offer — even the most ambitious travelers among us couldn’t help but succumb to the calming influence of “la dolce vita.”

After a day of walking the ruins of Pompeii or boating along the Amalfi Coast, we found time to stroll the streets of Sorrento, pop into a storefront to gaze at the beautiful gelato and taste the homemade limoncello, watch a cameo being made — or simply sit at an outdoor café and people watch.

If you’ve never traveled with a group before, I encourage you to put this on your bucket list. I’ll forever cherish the memories and friendships made, and the shared experiences I now have with my 36 fellow travelers. Traveling also shows you a different side of the people you’ve already built relationships with, whether they are on a professional or personal level. It’s a freeing experience that leads to a little silliness, a lot of laughter and a future, I predict, of shared inside jokes.

That’s the magic.

But there are so many practical benefits of signing up for a group trip. First, the group rates are phenomenal. There’s also the sheer joy of not having to plan out every day. You can sit back, relax and let someone else do all the planning. If you are like me and actually enjoy researching and planning your own excursions, you have the option to take a couple of days to explore on your own.

Our trip to Italy was the first of many group trips to come. Next up Ireland in October 2023! Call the Chamber at 636-532-3399 or email me at nora@chesterfieldmochamber.com for more details.

Vito’s in the Valley Is Now Gio Modern Italian

When Giovanni (“Gio”) and Jessica LaFata opened their new restaurant in Chesterfield in 2013, naming it Vito’s in the Valley seemed natural.

“When we came out to Chesterfield and opened a restaurant after I had operated a restaurant with my family for so many years, it was all I ever knew,” says Gio. “And authentic Sicilian — spending most of my greatest memories there growing up — it’s, again, all I knew.”

“But organically, when we moved to West County, we followed the lead of what our customers wanted and what our team was good at — and it took us in a much more modern interpretation of Italian, not just authentic Sicilian,” says Jessica. “We allowed our chef to be creative, and what he was putting out was delicious and the community was loving it.”

While Vito’s has always featured LaFata family favorites, such as eggplant parmesan, and held true to their commitment to made-fromscratch Italian meals, many of the menu items reflect Gio’s more modern take on Italian cuisine.

inside out,” says Jessica. “We just felt like it was the right time to make a change — and we went with it.”

Gio Modern Italian.

The name Gio has a double meaning for the LaFatas. In addition to Gio’s name, Jessica says the true meaning behind the name is captured in the acronym GIO which stands for Growing Into Ourselves.

“I love it, because it really defines our story,” Jessica says. “It’s hard to explain to people but we’re not really changing anything. We’re just being who we were meant to be: growing into ourselves.”

In addition to the updated interior and new sign out front, Jessica says customers can expect to see a few new items on the restaurant’s modern Italian menu and weekend specials that will change from week to week. Other than that, “not a whole lot of the experience is going to change,” she says.

“It’s just being true to who we are today.”

And the name change?

“It’s a name that people have always wanted us to be,” says Jessica.“Since we’ve opened, people have said, ‘Why aren’t you named Gio?’ Because Gio is the face they see every time they come to the restaurant. But we’d already made the choice to carry on the name that my husband had known working in his family’s restaurant for 20 years.”

This past year, Gio and Jessica decided to renovate the restaurant to make it a more authentic reflection of how the couple has always wanted the space to look and feel.

“We did a really beautiful renovation,” says Jessica.“It’s definitely less traditional Italian and much more modern.”

Updating the restaurant’s interior inspired the couple to change the name.

“We’re going to make this transformation from the

CPAs for Hire is in a growth mode — not only for itself but for the many small businesses it serves.

Chesterfield business owners need as much support as possible to keep the Valley thriving, especially after coming off of a rough couple of years,” says CPAs for Hire Founder and President Dennis Fry.

The accounting, tax and advisory firm recently opened its second office at 115 Chesterfield Towne Center in Chesterfield Valley, which Fry views as a strategic location for the firm.

“There are a lot of small business owners in the area who could benefit from our services,” he says. One-stop shop for financial services

CPAs for Hire, which Fry owns with his business partner Dave Zaegel, is truly a one-stop shop for small business owners seeking help with their taxes, accounting and financial planning.

While accounting and taxes are the core services, CPAs for Hire also offers small businesses part-time CFO services through its brand CFOs for Hire. The business model is designed so that small businesses that start by using the accounting services can access CFOs for Hire services as their needs become more complex.

Operating out of the same offices, but separately led by Zaegel who is both a CPA and certified financial planner, is CWOs for Hire, which provides financial planning for businesses and individuals.

small businesses and their owners — from sole proprietor way to businesses who need a part-time CFO.”

“We’re a fiduciary wealth planner that has taxes in mind at all times — whereas most financial planners aren’t fully aware of the tax impact related to the things they’re suggesting to their clients,” explains Fry, who is vice president of CWOs for Hire.

Zaegel agrees.

“It’s pretty rare to find financial planners who also have an interest in taxes — and can do all that under one roof,” says Zaegel. “Whether they’re running a business or in retirement, taxes are one of people’s biggest expenses.”

Combining accounting services with financial planning, says Zaegel, is the best of both worlds.

“If you just work with a CPA, a lot of times they’re focused on that year, especially with taxes. And if you go to a traditional financial planner, a lot of them aren’t focused on taxes at all. Whereas we can focus on all the financial planning, all the investments, everything that people need throughout the transitions in their lives — and we’re also looking at taxes, not only for now but for many, many years down the road. That’s the combination we offer: It’s not either-or; it’s blending those pieces together.”

Small business focus

While CPAs for Hire serves many personal tax clients, including professional athletes and high-net-worth individuals and families, the firm’s niche is serving small businesses and their owners.

“We focus on small businesses and their owners — from sole proprietor all the way to businesses who need a part-time CFO,” says Fry.

And Fry says his accountants are “all very knowledgeable in small business accounting.”

“What I look for in hiring is not just CPAs who have public accounting experience. I also look for corporate accounting experience and, if I can find someone who also owned a business, that’s the trifecta.”

Fry’s own experience mirrors what he seeks from his staff. His experience includes public accounting with both local and Big 4 accounting firms, senior leadership in corporate accounting and finance — and owning and operating a small business.

“I owned an indoor soccer facility and a soccer retail store in Dallas,” he says. “When I was running that business, I kept doing the accounting because I know how to do it. However, my time could have been better spent running the business — getting new teams to join our facility or building relationships with teams who needed uniforms. Instead, I was spending an hour or so a day making sure the accounting was up to date.”

That motivated Fry to open a firm focused on small business accounting.

“I saw an opportunity to help small business owners focus on doing what they love and grow their business, while we handle the financial side of things,” says Fry. “Because I’ve faced many of the same challenges as the business clients we serve, I love playing a part in helping them succeed. And our CPAs really take pride in helping our clients successfully grow their businesses.”

More than taxes

Fry is quick to point out that CPAs for Hire approaches each client from an accounting perspective,

26 Out & About | January-March 2023 @chesterfieldmochamber

with an eye toward far more than tax-related issues.

“If you ask our clients who have worked with a CPA before, one comment we often get is ‘I’ve never been helped with our accounting before. It’s always been tax related,’” says Fry. “We’re doing their accounting as if we are their controller or CFO — even if it’s only for a couple hours a week or a few hours a month.”

Some clients question whether it makes financial sense to just hire a bookkeeper at a lower rate per hour.

“Rates are relative to time spent.” says Fry. “If we, as CPAs, can get it done in less time, especially when dealing with more complex accounting issues, the cost difference is negligible. Plus, if we’re doing the tax returns, it makes sense to keep it all together under one roof.”

And that, says Fry, is where the company really differentiates itself from the competition. With its monthly subscription-based packages, a small business can get QuickBooks Online, accounting and tax returns done for them, and advisory time for in-person or virtual meetings, all for an affordable monthly fee.

“It’s really CPAs and CFO-level people doing the

bookkeeping work.”

Another benefit of working with a team that has public accounting experience?

“Public accountants are generally very process and workflow oriented,” says Fry. “So, if we see things that we think should be done a little bit differently, we will suggest that to the client so they can get things done more quickly.” Checkoutthecompletesuiteofservicesandsubscription plansatCPAsForHire.com.Youcanalsofindawealthof informationaboutretirementplanninginDaveZaegel’s RetireWithConfidencepodcastsatCWOsForHire.com.

Ten Travel Tips for the Perfect Vacation

Iam a travel advisor and owner of a Cruise Planners franchise located right here in Chesterfield. I assist clients, at no cost to them, with all types of travel including cruises, all-inclusive vacations, European getaways — and so much more. I pride myself on giving my clients a free personalized experience, helping my clients plan their dream vacation every step of the way. Planning your next adventure? Here are my 10 travel tips for today:

1. There’s an app for everything, and you should use them. I know it seems like we all have too many apps on our phones these days, but having airline, hotel and car rental apps on your phone will get you access to the latest updates and the most accurate information.

2. Invest in TSA Pre-Check and Global Entry if you fly on a regular basis. Getting to skip lines and not worrying about taking shoes off or pulling out your laptop is a nice luxury in today’s world of travel.

3. What days and times are best to travel? Early morning flights are best. They are the least likely to be cancelled and have the fewest delays.

4. Make personalized packing lists. There are tons of apps and pre-populated packing lists out there, but it is worth the time and effort to customize it for you and your family.

5. Have patience and be polite! The world has changed in the past few years — and having lots of patience and politeness will go far these days.

6. Get the travel insurance. For most people, spending money on travel is an investment. You should protect that investment as well as ensure you will be taken care of if anything goes wrong. It takes stress out of your vacation — and isn’t that the idea?

7. Be flexible. You will find the best deals if you are flexible with your travel dates and open to different destinations.

8. Keep your passport current. Most countries or airlines have a 6-month rule. If your passport will expire within six months of traveling, they may not let you fly or enter the county. Don’t let something like this ruin your vacation.

Leave lots of extra time. Get to the airport early and allow plenty of time for connections. It is much better to sit a few extra hours in the airport versus missing a flight and possibly your vacation altogether. 10. Use a travel advisor. Lafayette Industries: Where Camaraderie and Purpose Make Happy Employees

The first thing you notice when walking into the Lafayette Industries is how happy everyone seems — including 30-year-old Kurt Pfeiffer, who has worked at the sheltered workshop for eight years.

Energetic and talkative, Pfeiffer says he looks forward to coming to work every day.

“I just like moving around. I love working,” he says. “If I’m at home, I get bored easily.”

Like his fellow employees, Pfeiffer works 30 hours a week — Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m.noon.

On the last day of November, he was packing chlorine tablets for use in hot tubs. To make the job go faster, he assembled 12 cartons first before quickly filling each with six tablets.

“I get them all lined up,” Pfeiffer says.

Three of Pfeiffer’s siblings also work at Lafayette, and he has made a lot of friends.

“Some people are scared to make new friends, but I’m not,” he says.

In addition to the friendships made working alongside one another, Lafayette organizes events and activities that contribute to the easy camaraderie.

“We do fun stuff,” Pfeiffer says. “Sometimes, there’s hotdog days. Sometimes, we have a party. I think

a Christmas party might be coming up soon.”

The annual holiday party is just one of many opportunities to socialize and participate in enrichment activities.

“We provide art therapy and music therapy, which was initiated through a partnership with Maryville University,” says Executive Director Rob Libera. “We have a partnership with TASK in a program called Be Well, Work Well because exercise is so important. The city of Manchester Arts Council comes in once a quarter and provides art instruction, and we’re going to have an art show and holiday concert at Manchester United Methodist Church in December. We provide free hot and healthy lunches once a month. And we celebrate everybody’s work anniversary every single month.”

This past October, Missouri Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe personally handed out the 100th gold watch that Lafayette has given out for 25 years of service.

Among the many benefits to the workshop employees, Libera lists “stability, a sense of pride, dignity — and self-worth from a job where they can go where they’re respected and supported.”

This is exactly the type of environment a group of parents wanted for their grown children with developmental disabilities who needed a place to go after graduating high school when they started Lafayette Industries in 1976. Today, the nonprofit contract packaging facility is the single largest full-time employer of adults with disabilities in Missouri.

“We started out with 16 employees,” says Libera. “Now we have 380 people working at our two workshops, one here in West County and one in Berkeley.”

Where everyone can succeed Libera says Lafayette has a mission “to create an environment where everyone can succeed.”

“We are also running a business, and our clients come to us because we do quality work and we do it on time.”

30 Out & About | January-March 2023 @chesterfieldmochamber
Kurt working on a job in the sheltered workshop.

At the heart of that quality work is intensive training rooted in a belief that “everybody can work at a different pace according to the best of their ability,” says Libera.

Diana Hemkens leads the employee training program.

“My job is to get to know everybody,” she says. “If you’re a new employee, I’m helping you with our routines and on-the-job training. I also do social skills training, problem-solving training — if something pops up in the middle of the day— and job skills training.

“Most of our jobs are broken into individual steps,” she adds. “If somebody needs help with a particular step, they might need a tool. If it doesn’t already exist, I will try to make it for them.”

In one example, a job required counting out 25 small pieces before placing them in a plastic bag. Hemkens created a grid with 25 squares, allowing the employee to simply place one piece on each square before packing them — without worrying about losing count.

“This is a community where everybody is capable of doing these jobs,” says Hemkens. “We just learn differently, and we might do a particular job differently. Everyone has strengths.”

As she looks across the workshop at the hundreds of busy employees, Hemkens lights up: “What I love about this place is that they take pride in their work. They love working with their peers, our customers are happy with our work — and we are benefiting our community.”

STEPUPprovides real-world employment

In 2020, Lafayette teamed up with McArthur’s Bakery and its Pioneer Bakery Café in Kirkwood to launch STEPUP , a program that trains individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for long-term employment outside of the sheltered workshop.

Currently, 15 interns are enrolled in STEPUP , and 10 have gone on to find competitive employment.

“The program is built on the premise that these individuals have documented evidence that they have certain barriers preventing them from being successfully employed,” says Stacey Elster, chief program officer. “We’ve studied data and found that those barriers are related to problem solving, professional communication and self-regulation, and we’ve built a curriculum that focuses on that.”

The interns begin the week with three hours of classroom instruction at Lafayette followed by four hours working at the bakery.

“Our staff is there to support them in transferring

the learned skills in a real-world setting,” Elster says.

After one to two years at the bakery, the interns seek employment where they can use their new skills.

Interns use their time at the bakery getting “that real-world opportunity to practice things like the point-ofsale system,” says Elster.

“Several have been hired just because they can operate that system,” she adds.

As with workshop employees, Libera says it’s important for potential employers to understand that STEPUPis all about sustainable employment.

“Once you hire one of these employees, you’re going to have a long-term employee,” he says.

The First Churches

Twelve churches were founded in the Chesterfield area between 1816 and 1923. Nine of these churches continue to thrive. Since the French and Spanish never settled in Chesterfield, the first church was founded by the early American settlers. Most of these came from English, Scottish and Irish backgrounds, and they were willing to attend the Bonhomme Presbyterian Church founded in 1816 by Joseph Conway Sr. and the widow Elizabeth Smith. In 1841, a stone structure was erected, which continues to stand at Conway and White Roads. Chesterfield Baptist Church was the second church founded in Chesterfield. It was housed in a brick structure along Wild Horse Creek Road near Santa Maria Drive. Storms destroyed the building in 1920 and the church ceased to exist. Antioch Baptist Church was the third church to appear in Chesterfield, also in 1841. Whites and Blacks worshipped together until a new church was constructed in 1869. The white members moved to the new building, while the Black members continued to worship in the original structure until 1922. They renamed their church Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. The next church to develop in Chesterfield was the First Baptist Church of Chesterfield in 1846. Land for this church was donated by Leah Long for her slaves to build their own church. It was located on the southeast corner of Wild Horse Creek Road and Chesterfield Parkway West, where a small cemetery still exists. In 1996, it moved to its present location at 17103 Wild Horse Creek Road. By 1892, German immigrants were tired of traveling to Ellisville or Manchester to attend worship services, so they began to establish their own churches. The first of these German churches was St. John’s Evangelical & Reformed Church (today, the United Church of Christ.) Seventeen German farmers, who lived in the areas of

Lake and Bellefontaine, built this church at 15370 Olive Boulevard. It continues to thrive today. Eight years later, Trinity Lutheran Church opened in a small white wooden structure on the southeast corner of Clayton Road and Hwy. 141. Today, it is a large, active place for worship and education. Trinity Methodist Church in Bellefontaine only functioned from 1903 to 1920. St. Thomas United Church of Christ made its appearance in Gumbo (Chesterfield Valley) in 1907 and continues to flourish today. St. Anthony’s was the first Catholic Church in the Chesterfield area of Centaur (Wildwood today). It was initiated by Anton Leiweke. Sunday liturgies were held in the one-room schoolhouse which was restored by Michael Phelan in 2009. It closed in 1948, and its parishioners became part of Ascension parish. In 1922, Union Baptist Church became the eleventh church to be founded in the Chesterfield area. African Americans built this church near Westland Acres where it continues to serve its members. Ascension Catholic Church (1923-present) is the last of the early Chesterfield churches. It began as a mission church of St. Anthony’s, but quickly grew into an independent parish. Its centennial will be celebrated from April 2023 to May 2024.

LIT Cigar Lounge Fired Up About Move to Larger Space

LIT Cigar Lounge is moving to a larger, 5,000-square-foot space at The District in Chesterfield Valley. The new lounge is three-times bigger than the original location, which opened at The District in 2019, and can accommodate up to 100 people. When it opens in February 2023, the $1 million upgrade will include a full bar, a walk-in humidor three times the size of the former one, a VIP room for private get-togethers and a larger outdoor patio with live music.natural.

“We always knew that our current location was a temporary space for us,” says Bryan Snyder, who cofounded the lounge with his wife and another couple. “From the time we opened, we had plans to move to a larger, permanent space as The District development progressed.”

The need to move was accelerated, says Snyder, by “continuous increasing demand and the rising popularity of smoking premium cigars in a temperaturecontrolled environment.”

Snyder says the new venue was designed with customer-focused features including an expanded bar menu and cigar selection. State-of-the art ventilation accounts for 25 percent of the overall project cost. “Our system is a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) that will bring in clean, conditioned air and expel the ‘dirty air,’” Snyder says. “No air is recycled in the lounge.”

Snyder says he didn’t anticipate growing out of the original space so quickly but the lack of competitive venues in the region means business is booming.

“There is nothing like us in the Chesterfield/West County area,” says Snyder. “There are some standalone cigar shops, but they don’t have the amenities and the space we have — not to mention the live music and tasting events.”

Cigar aficionados can look forward to a wide selection of well-known premium cigar brands such as Padron, Arturo, Rocky Patel, My Father, Davidoff, Ashton, Drew Estate and Oliva, as well as boutique brands such as Tatuaje, Crowned Heads, Dunbarton Tobacco, RoMaCraft, Fratello, Jake Wyatt and Luciano Cigars.

Snyder recommends that those new to cigar smoking ask one of the lounge’s certified retail tobacconists for help in finding a cigar with the best flavor profile.

Even non-smokers can enjoy an evening at LIT Cigar Lounge, says Snyder.

“We designed the space specifically to be comfortable for smokers and non-smokers alike,” Snyder says. “Even if you don’t enjoy premium cigars, our ventilation provides a comfortable environment

— and we have a world-class spirits and cocktail collection, along with wine and local beers.”

While anyone can smoke at home, Snyder says enjoying your favorite cigar at LIT Cigar Lounge elevates the experience.

“Plus, enjoying premium cigars is always more fun with friends and family,” he says.
