A Big Dream

Celebrating 45 Years as the Chesterfield Regional Chamber
orty-five years ago, five men decided that a business community, a chamber of commerce, was needed in “rural” West County. Chesterfield wasn’t incorporated until 12 years later. These men dared to dream and dream BIG. R.B. Clark, Reverend Carlton Norton, Homer Mastorakos, and two others met at each of their various places of businesses — a bank, a church, a law office — and planned and founded what we now know as the Chesterfield Regional Chamber. I believe our founders would be astounded by all that the Nora Amato Chesterfield Regional Chamber has accomplished these past 45 years. We started a concert series at Faust Park (34 years), a Pumpkin Run in Gumbo Flats (20 years), a Winter Festival (32 years), and spring (32 years) and fall (nine years) golf tournaments. These special events are only the highlights of more than 425 programs, events, committee and membership meetings, ribbon cuttings and networking opportunities. Some, including First Thursday Coffees and Business After Hours, have been a standing commitment on our members’ calendars for years. All are focused on our mission: helping our community connect, learn and grow. Today we are over 700 members and growing. Our Chamber now extends beyond Chesterfield to encompass the entire West County region. The pandemic put us into a tailspin, but we have recovered and are working closely with our business community to grow stronger, be a resource and connect one another. Everyone is rethinking their business model to better serve the community. We need our community members to continue to help us through the labor shortage, the limited hours of operation, the availability of products, and the logistics. Family comes to mind when I think of our Chamber. When a new member business joins the Chamber, and we introduce them to the community and each other, they can breathe a sigh of relief — chesterfieldmochamber.com
they are not alone. The community embraces them and all of you vote with your actions — shopping for their goods and services — to keep them in business. Sixty-six percent of our members are small business owners. Taking that step to be a small business owner and stay in that space takes a strong person. The Chamber has your back. Our long-term members and some larger businesses in the Chamber have amazed me with their partnerships and willingness to chip in. Our school districts are working closely with their students to create internships with our companies — and opportunities to volunteer and earn community service hours — to relieve the labor shortage. As our businesses rebuild, we can help one another navigate the growing pains by offering our patience, help, suggestions and support. Dine, play, stay and shop in the region. Refer to our Chamber directory in the back of this magazine as a resource. We can also support one another by coming together as a Chamber family. Get Active in the Chamber – and Get Connected!

C
onnections. That’s the word I continually use when talking about the Chamber. As a business owner, the Chamber connects me with people that I like to do business with — and it also helps me connect my clients to other Chamber members. I am very protective of my clients, so I won’t refer other businesses unless I am confident they will be a good fit. The Chamber provides me the opportunity to meet other businesses — to get to know the individuals running these businesses — which allows me to vet them before I refer them to my clients. This benefits me as a business owner and enables me to provide a valuable service to my clients. The Chamber does a great job of connecting people and businesses and helping them grow but — and this is a big but — only if they are active. Today, the Chamber has 712 members. But just a fraction of those members are active — attending and sponsoring events, volunteering, and participating on Chamber committees. I’ve been a member for over 10 years, and I’ve become increasingly active in the past four or five. Today, I am on the board, lead the Chamber Connecting Women networking group, chair a LEADS Group, and am on the Concert Series and Business Education committees. I am a huge proponent of Business After Hours and the various luncheons, and I attend a lot of Chamber events. This year, I am participating in Leadership Chesterfield which is already connecting me with more local organizations and community leaders. If this sounds like a lot, it is. But I can assure you it is time well spent. The connections I’ve made serve me well every day. The Chamber does an excellent job connecting businesses to consumers and businesses to businesses when they know their members. If you’re not active, you cannot possibly enjoy the connections and networking opportunities the Chamber provides. On the flip side, if someone calls the Chamber looking for a recommendation for a service or business, it’s

much easier for the Chamber to recommend you if they actually know you. The Chamber is like anything worthwhile: the more you put in, the more you get out. The more you get involved in the Chamber, the better off you’re going to be Halina J. Conti — not just professionally but personally. There are great people and businesses in the Chamber. And I can tell you from my own experience, there are friendships to be made when you’re working so closely with one another. Not sure how to get involved? The Chamber sponsors more than 400 events and opportunities every year. These are opportunities to meet other members — opportunities that could help your business. We’re all busy but with events in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening — and even on the weekends — you can find one to fit your schedule. You might be surprised to learn that this year marks the Chamber’s 45th anniversary — fourand-a-half decades connecting our businesses and serving our community. Birthdays are an ideal time to reflect on where we’re at in life and where we want to go. We all can benefit from making more connections. So, on this, the Chamber’s 45th birthday, I encourage you to think about how you can get active, get involved and get engaged with the Chamber. Hope to connect with you at a Chamber event soon!

Chesterfield Food Scene Bishop’s Post Pays Homage to Chesterfield History By Carol Enright

ver wonder where Bishop’s Post got its name? The Chesterfield restaurant which opened its doors on May 9, 2014, credits its unique moniker to a combination of the name of owner, Ben Bishop, Jr., and the restaurant’s cross street and Chesterfield pioneer Justus Post. Located on Chesterfield Parkway near Chesterfield Mall, the restaurant is a popular destination for its food and its stunning patio. “This spring, we built a brand-new patio pavilion on our already fantastic patio,” said Marketing and Staffing Manager Alexandra Nelson. “It provides a fullservice bar with TVs, shade in the summer, multiple gas firepits and a huge stone fireplace. Of course, the beloved waterfall is still there. If you haven’t been out to see our patio in person, it’s a must. We have guests that refer to it as their own personal oasis.” In addition to the patio, Bishop’s Post has one main dining room, three private event spaces that act as dining rooms when not in use, and a full indoor bar with bar and tabletop seating. Nelson describes Bishop Post’s food as “an elevated take on classic fare.” What are her favorites? “This is a tough question — all of our chesterfieldmochamber.com
food is to die for! My favorite sandwich is a classic Bishop’s Burger with a side of fries. It never fails. Favorite pasta dish is our Black & Bleu Beef Tip Pasta; the flavors go together nicely. It has the perfect combination of creamy with a little bit of spice. Our fried chicken entree is a crowd favorite — it’s one of our most ordered items on the menu and a must try. And for dessert, you have to try the Bishop’s Basket — a handmade almond-based brittle basket, filled with ice cream, and topped with fresh berries.” October-December 2021 | Out & About

Like all local restaurants, Bishop’s Post was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. “It forced us to think outside of the box and offer things that we’ve never done before, like carryout and take-n-bake family style meals,” said Nelson. “Our dining rooms were closed for a total of 26 weeks in 2020, but with the community support of our carryout business, we kept our chins up and made it through stronger — and more creative— than before.” Nelson is a big fan of Chesterfield and its residents. “We love Chesterfield — we think the people are great. They love to have a good time, they’re

social, and they love their local restaurants. Back when we opened, the Chesterfield food scene was mostly chain restaurants and was lacking some individuality. With the support of our community, and our regulars, we have established ourselves in Chesterfield as a go-to for many locals.” The restaurant serves up to 300 people a day, and they come from all over. “We have many guests who travel from the west, the St. Charles County area, and we see our guests come from the east, as well. I think we’re in a convenient, centrally located area for most people.” The restaurant employs about 60 full- and part-time staff, and Nelson is excited about the recent hiring of a new executive chef from New York with an “impressive resume.” But when you ask her what makes Bishop’s Post special, she doesn’t hesitate: “The people.” “That may be a cliché answer, but it’s the truth. I wholeheartedly believe that we have the best ownership, staff and customers out there.”

Location and amenities help U.S. live entertainment rehe
When big music acts come to town in the near future, it might be for more than a one-night performance. They may be kicking off a multi-city tour by rehearsing and producing their live events at Gateway Studios and Production Services (GSPS). Set to open in early 2023, GSPS will be the largest entertainment production services and rehearsal facility of its kind in the country. At the center of the 32-acre, $111 million development located at 900 Spirit of St. Louis Boulevard in Chesterfield is a 330,000-squarefoot complex that will be the launching point for globally touring musical acts. Gateway CEO Trey Kerr said the new facility, which will be “the size of convention centers in a lot of cities in the United States,” was built from the ground up to produce and rehearse a full live production — from the start to finish including all tech and lighting. While the facility is multi-faceted, Kerr said it was “specially designed to our expertise and what we know and what we do in the music industry: live production of rock-and-roll and corporate shows.” Rehearsing every aspect of the show in a facility that can accommodate stadium- and arena16

sized tours is a huge selling point to artists who want to kick off their tours “as a well-oiled machine,” said Kerr. “The artists want that experience the fan has at show one to be the same experience the fan has at show 100,” he added. Kerr will lead the facility along with music industry live touring production veterans Andy Gerber, Jesse Sandler and David Haskell. The team has more than 100 years’ combined experience in live touring production and has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Bon Jovi, Phish, Kenny Chesney, Maroon 5, Drake, Jimmy Buffett, the Eagles, Aerosmith, John Mellencamp, Nickelback, Alabama, Prince, Florida Georgia Line and Sugarland. The state-of-the-art facility will employ more than 100 highly skilled music industry professionals. “This isn’t the days of roadies hanging out backstage — the music industry is a very highly skilled world we work in,” said Kerr. “We’re talking a lot of high paying jobs with a minimum average salary of $75,000 per year.” Chesterfield competed with locations just @chesterfieldmochamber

When you take a big circle and draw it around LA or New York, half your circle is in the ocean,” said Kerr. “St. Louis being centrally located is a competitive advantage over a lot of other cities. You can get to a third of the population of the United States within a day’s drive,” he added. “These bands can tech and rehearse and build their shows and then kick off their tours anywhere in the United States, because ultimately these tours are how most bands generate money these days.” Easy access for travelers is key, too. “Having the Spirit of St Louis Airport literally right across the street is extremely important. It’s a huge selling feature of what we do,” Kerr said. The proximity of the highway also provides easy access for the many trucks coming to the facility as part of concert tours. offers to the artists and everyone working the tour. “Chesterfield offers anything and everything you can possibly imagine in terms of supporting the tour. Five minutes down the road you have every single store you can think of — from Best Buy to Walmart to Target to restaurant and bar support,” said Kerr. Kerr also mentioned Top Golf and the new Factory concert venue at the District. “When you have a large amount of people who come in, they want to go eat and drink and enjoy the area on their time off.” Kerr also has personal reasons for wanting to build the dream facility in his hometown. “I’m born and raised here,” said Kerr. “My wife and I moved back about 10 years ago, and this is always where we wanted to get it done.” While its new campus is under construction, Gateway’s production services division is online and currently offering booking clients a full complement of production services, including audio, lighting, video and streaming services. The St. Louis County Parks Foundation is seeking donations to help with the costs of moving and restoring a historic schoolhouse built in 1894 that served African American students until the mid-1950s. Located off Wild Horse Creek Road in Chesterfield, this one-room schoolhouse is the only known surviving log African American school in St. Louis County. St. Louis County Parks has already disassembled what was formerly known as African School #4 or Chesterfield School #26, tagging and numbering the logs so they can be put together in the correct order when the schoolhouse is reassembled in Faust Park. hat does the Chesterfield Regional Chamber do for your community?
“You might think of us as your local concierge,” said Krysta Struthers, assistant director for the Chesterfield Regional Chamber. “People call us all the time to ask about community events, such as the concerts and the Pumpkin Run. They want to know if they can bring a cooler or how much things cost,” she said. The Chamber just completed its 34th year of sponsoring the concert series at Faust Park, a tremendous undertaking which has become a summer tradition for many area residents. “People also call to ask us directions,” said Struthers. Until it closed last year, one place, in particular, seemed especially difficult for people to find. People would call the Chamber to ask the location of a TSA Pre-check center. It was only a few blocks away from the Chamber office in Chesterfield Valley, but it had no prominent signage and was difficult to find. After several calls, Struthers and Chamber President and CEO Nora Amato took a drive down the road to find the building. Then they wrote down detailed directions to provide callers searching for the center. People call asking about tree removal services and senior care facilities, said Struthers. They call to ask for recommendations for venues for hosting weddings and family reunions. Some people coming in from out of town will either call or just pop in the office to ask about things to do in Chesterfield. “I usually tell them about great

entertainment options we have, such as the new Factory concert venue and Top Golf,” said Struthers. “I also point out the huge variety of restaurants we have in the Valley as well as the local shopping.” Member businesses also count on the Chamber for advice. “We received a lot of calls during the pandemic about the federal Paycheck Protection Program and how businesses could apply for the loans,” said Struthers. “I was able to provide them basic information about the program; but when their questions exceeded my expertise, I was happy to refer them to the best source.” What’s the most interesting call the Chamber has received? “One of our older residents called at the very beginning of the pandemic during the toilet paper shortage. She was distressed because she didn’t know where to go to find toilet paper, so we ran a few rolls over to her home,” said Struthers. “And then we talked to the Chesterfield Police about this being an issue, and they started delivering toilet paper to people who were homebound or otherwise couldn’t get out to find any.” While these acts of kindness may strike outsiders as beyond the call of duty for a local chamber of commerce, Struthers simply sees them as par for the course. “At the end of the day, we are here to support our local businesses and our residents,” she said. “Most of the time, that means hosting events, providing networking opportunities for our business owners, and being a community resource. Sometimes, it means going the extra mile by delivering a roll of toilet paper or mapping out directions for someone who needs a little help.”

As Chesterfield Grew, So Did One of the Chamber’s E Logan University joined the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce in 1981
T
his year, the Chesterfield Regional Chamber celebrates its 45th anniversary. The Chamber was established in 1976. It was the year of America’s Bicentennial. Jimmy Carter was president, Rocky was smashing box office records, Happy Days was the number one show on TV, and Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci earned the first perfect 10 in Olympic history. Five years later, in 1981, as the world turned its focus to the marriage of Lady Diana Spencer to Charles, Prince of Wales, the Chamber quietly grew to six members. One of them was Logan College of Chiropractic. Dr. Clay McDonald, current Logan University President, was a student at what was then Logan College Chiropractic and graduated with a chiropractic degree in 1982. “When I came here as a student in 1979, there was just the original building. That was it. There were roughly 400 students here at the time,” McDonald recalled. Although the building was still relatively new — Logan had purchased it from Maryknoll Junior Seminary in 1973 — McDonald remembers the sprawling 112-acre campus feeling “pretty rural” much like Chesterfield did at the time. “The campus was pretty isolated,” he said,

“and Chesterfield felt like a kind of vague place. It didn’t have boundaries. It didn’t have an identity. Ballwin and Manchester probably had more of an identity to the students.” Chesterfield was only incorporated as a city in 1988. “But now Chesterfield is a powerhouse in West County, and very dynamic and expanding rapidly,” said McDonald. “And I think the growth of the university is mirrored in the growth of the city and the Chamber. Chesterfield and the school have both grown, in some ways exponentially — they’ve both matured a lot during that time.” The Chamber has certainly grown — from the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce with a handful of members to the expanded Chesterfield Regional Chamber of Commerce with 712 members. McDonald joined Logan as its seventh president in 2013, the same year Logan College of Chiropractic became Logan University. “At that time, we had about 750 doctor of chiropractic students and two master’s degrees that were complementary to the doctor of chiropractic degree,” he said. “This fall, we have 930 doctor of chiropractic students and 900 students in the College of Health Sciences. The degrees we offer now are pretty extensive.” The chiropractic students earn their degrees in traditional in-person programs. All eight degrees in the College of Health Sciences are currently online offerings. “Next summer we’ll have a new master’s degree in athletic training here on campus. That’s pertinent because the rest of the College of Health Sciences
Earliest Members degrees are online, but we are growing degrees here on campus,” McDonald said. “Given our current enrollment in the chiropractic program alone, we’re just out of space.” To accommodate the continued growth of the chiropractic student population and the anticipated influx of inperson students seeking master’s degrees starting in the summer of 2022, the university is planning a $28 million renovation and expansion of its Science and Research Center, newly named the Fuhr Science Center following receipt of a $1 million lead gift from Dr. Arlan and Judi Fuhr. The expansion will add nearly 15,000 square feet to the science building, resulting in a 45,000-square-foot space upon completion. “It will have a full floor dedicated to anatomy with two anatomy labs — virtually doubling the size the size of the anatomy lab we have now,” McDonald said. The renovated science center will also house a simulated imaging center, faculty offices, added student collaboration and study areas, and anatomage tables, which are advanced, 3D-simluation systems. “It’s like a giant iPad, a 3-dimensional tool that allows you to dissect,” said McDonald. Construction of the expansion and renovation project is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2022. McDonald is excited about the university’s physical expansion, but he also sees significant value to the expansion of the university’s health

Rendering of new Fuhr Science Center. science degree offerings. “It’s healthier for students in any degree program to be surrounded by people earning other degrees because they get a broader worldview,” said McDonald. “Especially in health care, it’s nice not to be quite as isolated in your educational experience.” He added that chiropractic’s place in the medical world has changed dramatically in recent years. “At one time, it would be considered alternative medicine. It is now integrated virtually across the board. Offering other healthcare degrees is a natural thing for us to do.”
Chesterfield’s Veterans By Ann Chrissos, Chesterfield Historic and Landmark Preservation Committee
M
any of Chesterfield’s residents have shown their patriotism through military service. Joseph Conway, an early settler to the Chesterfield area, served in the American Revolution and Indian Wars before moving to Missouri. A resident of Bonhomme (Chesterfield) from 17961830, he returned to the military as a captain in the War of 1812. Colonel John S. Ball, another veteran of the same war, moved his family to Bonhomme upon completion of his service in 1815. Captain William Tyler, a slave owner, arrived in the Chesterfield area in 1837. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Confederate Army. He died in 1864 in Virginia. A marker honoring Spanish American War veterans can be found in Gumbo Cemetery. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, Fritz Albrecht, who lived on Wild Horse Creek Road near Highway 109, enlisted in the army. When he received his orders for overseas deployment, he traveled by train from Fort Leonard Wood to Union Station in St. Louis. As the train passed through Gumbo Bottoms (Chesterfield Valley), he threw a note from his train window with the date and train number to field workers, who took the note to his sister Christine. She, along with her husband Thomas Linley Eatherton and their daughter Helen, made a mad dash to Union Station. They saw Fritz leaning from the train window waving to them. Later, Fritz was injured in the Battle of the Argonne Forest and given a medical discharge. Other Chesterfield veterans of World War I included Edward Rikard, Walter H. Koebel and Ernst V. Hill. After the United States entered World War II in 1941, most of Chesterfield’s young men joined the military. The labor force declined so much that area farmers were forced to use POWs to work the fields. Besides those in the following pictures, some additional local World War II veterans include Donald W. Frommer, Walter V. Buford, Norman C. Albrecht, Roy Eisenhardt and Earl Bayer. Bayer served as a gunner on a B17 Flying Fortress. He flew 25 combat missions from England to France. He was wounded over France

Chesterfield residents continued to join the military during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The Korean War veterans are being honored in a special display at the Chesterfield Heritage Museum in Chesterfield Mall. Vietnam veterans included members of Chesterfield Historic and Landmark Preservation Committee (CHLPC) Michael Kane and Stan Dampier, as well as Mayor Bob Nation, John H. Deuser, Jr. and Charles Fine. Military service by Chesterfield residents continue to the present day. Their service is honored and greatly appreciated. @chesterfieldmochamber
