Slowing Down to Smell the Roses — or the Gardenias

M

y mom has the greenest thumb of anyone I know, passed down to her from my grandmother whom I am named after. Me? Not so much.

Words of wisdom from my mom: “Your children are your flowers at this stage of your life. You will have plenty of time to have flowers and a garden when you retire, and your children are out of the house.” I keep trying to have pretty flowers and a garden. I think I can do it all. It doesn’t help when I get so busy that I cannot Nora Amato water them and then I feel like I am not succeeding at anything. Each time I visit my mom, she has started another gardenia plant and gives me fragrant blossoms to enjoy. And, again, she reminds me to slow down and not try to do everything.

The pandemic, in a way, helped me to appreciate my immediate family, spend time with those I am connected with (family, friends near and far, church family, Chamber members, and work friends), and get back to the basics. Many of us were able to slow down — I did — for about a month while figuring out a working hybrid model of running the Chamber. After that month, it became a more hectic frenzy of communication, new resources, and helping Chamber members stay connected and their businesses survive. Thank you to our wonderful Chesterfield Regional Chamber community in supporting each other. There is still much work to be done and many members are still anxious as we watch our friends and business partners struggle — but we are in this together. Reach out, visit, promote each other’s businesses. Get out there and share your successes so others can build on those. I purposely have tried to touch base or reach out to 10 Chamber member businesses a day. In a month, that adds up to 300. Our events and programs are happening — some virtual but most now fully back in person. We have reworked our budget to navigate the shortcomings from the pandemic, but our Chesterfield Regional Chamber remains the largest Chamber in St. Louis County. I am thankful and blessed. We have continued our Chesterfield Community Connections and hope that you join us for our August “Raising Kids” program. Recently, we had a Business Over Breakfast with Bill Andreas. It was about snapping the perfect picture — whether for work or home — and using your phone or a more sophisticated camera. Journaling — actually writing and drawing — has gone by the wayside, but photo journaling is now the new norm. In this spirit, let’s start telling our story in pictures — and maybe stop and snap a photo of those gardenias along the way!

Support Our Summer Concerts Letter from the Board

I

have had the honor and privilege of chairing or co-chairing the Chesterfield Regional Chamber’s Summer Concert Series for the past seven years. It is a great way I give back to the community — and, for me, it signals that summer is here. We kicked off our 34th annual summer concert series in Faust Park on June 1 with Butch Wax and the Hollywoods and our traditional season-opening fireworks. We were blessed with great weather, but even better was seeing a lawn full of neighbors, friends and fellow community members enjoying the simple pleasure of gathering together on a beautiful summer evening. Our concerts will continue every Tuesday of June, July (no concert July 6), and August. Each week features a popular local band, food trucks, concessions, Chamber member sponsor booths, the Bubble Bus, balloon twisting, face painting, and dancing under the stars — all for just $5 per person. There is no restriction on the number of attendees this summer — so come out and join us! We extended from our typical 10 concerts to 14, including one concert on Friday, Aug. 20, with two bands. The $15 price of admission for this special concert will benefit the Chamber and A.R.C. Angels Foundation, a wonderful Chamber member dedicated to preventing youth suicide through education and awareness. For our first 32 seasons, admission to our summer concerts was free. We were proud of our ability to provide excellent entertainment — and a venue for showcasing our Chamber businesses — at no cost to our community members. Last year, when St. Louis County restricted attendance due to the pandemic, we began selling $5 tickets to limit turnout and offset the costs of the masks and PPE we were providing. Again we were excited to offer some sort of “normal” safely to our community. Heading into this summer, we had restrictions from the county in order to be approved and had to charge again. We are realizing that concertgoers are happy to pay a small fee for a fun night out — and we are facing budget shortfalls in continuing to provide quality community entertainment — so we may have to make the decision to continue charging a small admission fee going forward. Many chesterfieldmochamber.com

community members may not be aware that the Chamber receives no financial support from taxpayer dollars for our summer concert series. Our concerts are made possible through the support and generosity of our Chamber members and volunteers, our business community, and concertgoers Stan Anderson who continued to show up — even in a pandemic! We are so grateful to the local businesses who, with their financial and in-kind support, make it possible for us to continue hosting this beloved summer tradition for the Chesterfield community. Supporting our concerts is one way they show they appreciate our community. In return, please shop local — and support, promote and shop Chesterfield Regional Chamber members. See you under the stars!

Chicken Salad Chick — Get Your Chick Fix! By Mary Shapiro

C

hicken Salad Chick could be called the Baskin-Robbins of chicken salad. Jennifer Winters is owner of the Chicken Salad Chick location at 17215 Chesterfield Airport Road, the franchise’s first St. Louis-area location which opened in January 2019. “Some of our guests will drive an hour to get here, to get their Chick fix,” Winters said. “And with over a dozen varieties of chicken salad, we encourage guests to taste any flavor before ordering, just like an ice cream parlor — we love our scoops.” Chicken Salad Chick serves full-flavored, Southern-style chicken salad “made from scratch with fresh ingredients and served from the heart,” Winters said. “With more than a dozen original chicken salad flavors as well as fresh side salads, gourmet soups, signature sandwiches and delicious desserts, Chicken Salad Chick’s menu is a perfect fit for any guest,” said Winters. She was first introduced to the concept in Nashville, Tenn., where she lived for 10 years and where there was a Chicken Salad Chick near her home and day care. “I loved it! So, when we decided to move back to Missouri to raise our young family, my husband Michael and I decided to franchise a restaurant,” Winters said. “We wanted the restaurant to be in line with our family morals, so we chose the Chicken Salad Chick brand for its good will and giving back. Their culture is phenomenal, and employees are treated like family.” Winters said the restaurants are “big on giving back —we donate at least one percent of

12

sales annually, and we have various foundations we work with.” “In the last year, we focused on donating meals to teachers, and we earlier donated meals to medical communities.” In addition to the Chesterfield location, Winters also owns a second St. Louis-area Chicken Salad Chick restaurant in Creve Coeur. She plans to open a store in Columbia this fall and two additional St. Louis-area locations in 2022 and 2023. In Chesterfield, Winters does a lot of catering in addition to in-store sales. “We felt Chesterfield would be a flagship location to reach a business clientele,” she said. All chicken salad flavors are made from scratch every day and produce comes in fresh daily. The menu includes a mix of traditional recipes such as Olivia’s Old South with sweet pickles and eggs; savory formulas, including Winters’ current favorite — Lauryn’s Lemon Basil with fresh basil, pecans, and lemon pepper seasoning; fruity and nutty — Fancy Nancy, a best seller, has Fuji apples, seedless grapes and pecans; and spicy — Kickin’ Kay Lynne is derived from three other kinds of chicken salad, offering buffalo sauce, ranch, bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, jalapenos and sriracha. @chesterfieldmochamber

The store’s hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. “That’s a tradition with our brand, to make sure employees can spend some time with their families,” Winters said.

“Chicken Salad Chick has a large number of female franchise owners, either as sole owners or as partnership owners, so we proudly refer to ourselves as ‘chicks,’ and I’m the Missouri chick,” Winters said. She adds that “the people are the best part of this job — hearing customers’ stories, why they come here. It’s not just feeding them — you never know who you’ll be able to help and serve.” “Spread joy, enrich lives and serve others is our motto.”

Wineries Welcome Attention Augusta Development Is Bringing to the Area

By Mary Shapiro

A

move to make Augusta a national wine destination has gotten some encouragement from wineries in that area, including members of the Chesterfield Regional Chamber who look forward to the new development. The Hoffmann Family of Companies commercial real estate owners, based in Naples, Fla., announced in February that it had acquired two wineries, the Montelle and Augusta wineries, and 250 additional acres of vineyards. The firm, in January, announced acquisition of a number of Augusta properties and vineyards — including, among others, Balducci Vineyards on 90-plus acres, the Knoernschild Vineyards and buildings on 53 acres, and Mount Pleasant Winery, which is the oldest in the Augusta area — contending it could invest as much as $100 million in that locale. Company officials have said they plan to consolidate wineries in the area covering over 700 acres, making them the largest vineyards and winery in the Midwest.

Chamber member Noboleis Vineyards is located in Augusta. Christine Newbold owns Noboleis with her sister Angie Geis and their parents. Newbold said Noboleis Vineyards, at 100 Hemsath Road, started when her parents, Bob and Lou Ann Nolan, purchased 84 acres and planted 10 acres of vineyards in 2005. An additional seven acres have been planted since 2011. Four varieties of Missouri grapes — Chambourcin and Norton (both red grapes, with Norton being the state grape of Missouri) as well as white grapes Traminette and Vignoles — were planted and now grace the hills of the estate. “Afterward, we built the winery and opened our tasting room in 2010,” Newbold said. “The name Noboleis is a combination of my parents’, my sister’s and my last names — my mom created that company name,” Newbold said. Since opening, Noboleis has expanded the business — from growing to over 30 wines in their

portfolio, to pursuing the wholesale market, to offering vineyard weddings for up to 200 guests, and more, Newbold said. She said she feels the recent large investment in Augusta wineries “will be a positive thing for the area.” “What they’re trying to do is bring attention to a beautiful region, which is also the first American Viticultural Area designated wine and grape growing region in this country, in 1980 and before either Napa or Sonoma.” She said Augusta has a long grape growing and wine making history. “Germans settled the area in the 1800s because this reminded them of their homeland, as did the soil, and they started planting grapes right away.” She’s excited about the plans. “At the end of the day, to have somebody come in and care enough about the area to revitalize it is a pretty neat thing and can only benefit people here,” Newbold said. “I know there are some who are worried because we might lose that quiet town feeling, but I anticipate more tourism and business.”

Her winery is now the only independent one left in Augusta in a 15-square-mile area. “We were the only one of five that didn’t sell,” Newbold said. “We are family owned, and we had been the new kids on the block, with other wineries having been here for a while. But we wanted to stay in business for ourselves. It is a bit scary, being the only one, but, at the end of the day, we still feel what is happening in the area overall is positive.” Her family has always loved the area, Newbold said. “To be part of someone bringing attention to the area is a pretty neat thing,” she said. Defiance Ridge Vineyards at 2711 S. Missouri 94 in Defiance is another Chamber member closely watching the development around Augusta. The 42-acre property boasts a vineyard, lake and garden landscape. Views of the Missouri River valley are captured year-round from the terraces and veranda surrounding a historic farmhouse. That land was planted as vineyards in 2007, originally as a company called Wine Country Gardens, said Chuck Gillentine, an owner running operations with Defiance Ridge.

“When we bought the property in 2017, Vignoles and Chambourcin grapes were grown there, but now the property is all grown in Vignoles grapes,” he said. “We are an LLC with local investors, including myself. Our venue is very large and has multiple seating areas. We have a full-service restaurant, will manage over 80 weddings this year, do many private events and make our own Missouri wine. We also contract with West Coast winemakers to bring in great varietals from the west coast.” He said the winery has enjoyed tremendous sales growth since the property was purchased in late 2017. “That’s primarily because of factors like a great service staff and variety of wines, about 26. We do full table service as well, with 15 to 20 servers working on a Saturday, and have live music on weekends,” Gillentine said. He admits he has mixed feelings about the Hoffmann deals. “I’m happy for Augusta and the winery owners,” he said. “I understand some of the businesses there had been on the market — the last few years have been difficult what with the weather and more, and people had struggled. I know winery sellers were ecstatic to do what they did. We have a beautiful area and a rich history in the wine business. But I think we should be concerned about creating better

wines, and I hope the Hoffmanns will be.” Gillentine said he has been to Napa many times, saying it’s also rich in history and grew tremendously in the last 40 years. “I think our thoughts should be about putting our area on the map by offering better facilities and wine, not by being another Napa,” he said. “We hope they are successful with these adventures because it will only help people like us. We look forward to working as good neighbors and, at the same time, growing our business.” He added his winery had the busiest May this year it ever had, with 10 weddings and possibly due to the publicity about the winery sales — though it could also have stemmed from pent-up demand following the COVID pandemic shutdowns. Gillentine praised the opportunity of bringing attractions to Augusta, “which needs it — everybody wins if they’re successful.” “But Missouri needs to be Missouri,” he said. “We have a lot to offer. It’s hard for many of us who know the Augusta area to believe it can be turned into Napa Valley — they’re two different places and styles. Still, there’s a lot of buzz, and I get asked many times a day about this. You can’t complain about that.”

Gambrill Gardens Retirement Community Offers All the Amenities in Park-like Oasis By Mary Shapiro For its 300 residents aged 55 to 102, Gambrill Gardens independent living retirement community is an oasis in Ellisville.

The facility was founded in 1978 by MaryDelle Gambrill May and the local Methodist Church, she said. Fevold said Gambrill Gardens is a “unique community which boasts the luxury of being tucked away on a 25-acre park-like campus” at 1 Strecker Road. The residence offers about 300 apartments spread out across seven buildings linked by internal walkways branching from a central administrative hub. “Gambrill Gardens is perfectly situated so our July-September 2021 | Out & About

residents have access to shopping, well-rated medical facilities, arts opportunities, restaurants, and parks and recreation,” Fevold said. Silver Tree Residential purchased Gambrill Gardens in 2016, and the firm completed a $7 million dollar renovation in 2018, bringing state-ofthe-art amenities to residents including a health and wellness center, GG Salon and Spa, game room, Life Enrichment Center, and Bistro 636. “Remodeled patios offer residents the chance to go out and enjoy the weather and serene countryside views while enjoying the company of family and friends,” Fevold said. “Gambrill Gardens maintains an excellent reputation by offering a full spectrum of superior amenities and well-trained staff — we offer exceptional active adult living with supportive services that help residents thrive in place.” Fevold added that trained, experienced staff and on-site caregivers are available as residents’ needs change and if support is needed. AW Healthcare and RPI Physical Therapy are partners, with offices located at the retirement community, and help make the aging-in-place process easier and more convenient, she said. Social activities at Gambrill Gardens include live music, exercise, cooking and art classes, bingo, social dinners on the patio, happy hours, card games, bocce ball, shuffleboard, Blues and Cardinals watch parties, field trips, gourmet meals, and more. Fevold said that leases are financially attractive, and there is a special, waiving the one-time community fee. 26

Out & About | July-September 2021

“The maintenancefree community offers everything a retiree needs,” she said. Amenities include private transportation, casual dining, a complimentary personal trainer, a health and fitness center, interfaith chapel with full-time chaplain, an activities center, a private movie theater, a 24-houraccess fully stocked convenience store, billiard and shuffleboard tables, therapy services, a studio salon and spa, walking trails, and an outdoor grand patio with firepits. Fevold said senior apartments offer both one- and two-bedroom styles in various floor plans, with lots of closet space and new bathrooms, kitchens, and flooring. The “all-inclusive” monthly fee includes dining, housekeeping, all scheduled activities, and transportation, as well as utilities and cable television. “Gambrill Gardens believes food is more than just sustenance — it’s the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle and social engagement,” Fevold said. “A five-star chef sources food from the finest local vendors, with fresh seasonal produce delivered daily and prepared specially for each meal. New menus are crafted each week with an emphasis on seasonal and locally available produce. There are many specialized diet plans, such as sugar free, low sodium, gluten and dairy free, vegetarian and more. Our residents enjoy fine dining daily at the luxurious on-site restaurant as well as more casual fare at the Bistro 636.” She praised “the consistent and well-trained staff of about 56 employees” who are there to fulfill residents’ needs, including a 24-hour front desk concierge. Devon Sullivan, executive director of Gambrill Gardens, said that, especially coming out of the COVID pandemic, residents are “getting back to becoming more active and enjoying their golden years here.” “We were lucky to be on 25 acres during @chesterfieldmochamber

COVID and were very careful with people we allowed in, while taking advantage of residents being able to social distance and enjoy a large campus with so many amenities here,” Sullivan said. Some steps Gambrill Gardens took during COVID included delivering meals and keeping the numbers lower for activities. “That kept our COVID cases relatively low, and we had no mass outbreaks,” said Sullivan. Gambrill Gardens residents generally come from a seven-mile radius. “They’ve lived in the area or have family who lives here — and some have had moms and dads who’ve been at Gambrill Gardens in the past,” Sullivan said. “The family atmosphere makes Gambrill Gardens special. It’s a place to meet your next best friends, we say, but many residents bring family, too. We have one family group living here that includes three brothers, a sister, and a cousin — and we’re working on another brother moving here from Kansas City.” Sullivan added that, often, “residents will reconnect with old pals after having gone to grade school together decades ago.” And he believes Ellisville has been a great location for the facility. “It’s centrally located to places like Chesterfield, Ballwin and Wildwood — family members are usually no more than 15 minutes from grandma and grandpa,” he said. “And there are lots of places our residents can drive to or take minibuses to, such as to grocery stores, doctors’ offices, ball games and more.” Fevold said that a unique benefit for residents living at Gambrill Gardens is access to the resident services coordinator, Danielle McAndrew. “Her role is to be available to assist in coordination of services and the navigation of medical benefits,” Fevold said. “Danielle can also provide information and referrals for local community programs, referrals to centers, make appointments with health care providers, and ensure residents come home from hospital or rehab with necessary services ready for chesterfieldmochamber.com

residents.” A host of resident groups provides opportunities for seniors to continue to use their skills and encourages their involvement in community activities, with committees supervising gardening, welcoming new residents, and aiding

operations of an on-site gift shop, among others. “Gambrill Gardens strives to provide a warm and welcoming community where seniors can simply relax with friends and neighbors in the comfort of a gorgeous resort-like setting,” Fevold said.

Pfizer Chesterfield Facilit Development of Historic By Carol Enright

A

s the world anxiously waited for a successful candidate to emerge from the race to find a COVID-19 vaccine, scientists in Chesterfield, a Pfizer Worldwide Research and Development facility, were manufacturing the plasmid that would be the starting material for every dose of what would become the first COVID-19 vaccine to be authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December 2020. On Nov. 8, 2020, after months of tireless work, a small team got the call: the first interim efficacy analysis of the data from the global Phase 3 clinical study — performed by an external, independent Data Monitoring Committee — had found the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to be more than 90 percent effective in preventing the SARSCoV-2 infection. This exceeded all expectations, especially considering the FDA would accept a vaccine with at least 50 percent efficacy. Cheers broke out as the team, including Pfizer Chairman and CEO Dr. Albert Bourla, jumped in elation. At the time, Bourla called the successful vaccine “the biggest scientific breakthrough of the last hundred years.” Following the vaccine’s initial efficacy readout, the Pfizer team was working around the

28

clock to finalize the submission to the FDA for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) as soon as possible. “We had been working diligently since April 2020,” said Judy Glynn, director of Pfizer’s research and development facility in Chesterfield. “However, as we approached EUA approval we felt the pressure of knowing that once we received that approval, Pfizer and BioNTech would really be responsible for providing the starting material for every dose manufactured by us. So, I would say our mood was both very hopeful but also feeling as though the weight of the world was on our shoulders.” Pfizer submitted its EUA application to the FDA on Nov. 20, and the FDA authorized the vaccine for emergency use on Dec. 11. The Pfizer-BioNTech

COVID-19 vaccine is currently authorized for use under the EUA for active immunization to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in individuals 12 years of age and older. John Amery, associate research fellow at Pfizer’s Chesterfield facility who led the St. Louis mRNA lab during the vaccine development, said “the EUA approval was not itself a pivotal moment for the Chesterfield labs.” “We had been manufacturing and releasing materials for quite some time, in anticipation of a potential EUA from the FDA,” said Amery. “When the EUA occurred, we were already committed to making the manufacturing approach

ty Indispensable in COVID-19 Vaccine successful.” Like a well-trained athlete, Pfizer entered the race to find a vaccine prepared for the challenge. “Fortunately, the group was very experienced in plasmid manufacturing, as we had been engaged in making plasmid for other Pfizer projects,” said Glynn. “However, we had not previously made plasmid at the Chesterfield site for use in human clinical trials, so we had to pivot in a very short amount of time to making plasmid for human use. This involved an all-hands effort to modify the facility and our manufacturing practices to meet regulatory expectations.” Katie Kenney, Site Affairs and Operations, said crossing the finish line first “was not a matter of chance but a result of the 10year journey we took at Pfizer to invest and focus on innovation in our R&D organization.” “Over the last decade, we’ve been taking a hard look at our productivity, sharpening our focus, and implementing gradual changes across multiple dimensions. From our deep understanding of biology, doubling down on exciting new modalities, and the efforts to empower our scientists for critical decision-making on their programs, Pfizer’s pipeline today is a reflection of the scientific opportunity partly brought about by the changes we’ve made.” Amery called the chesterfieldmochamber.com

Pfizer colleague preparing equipment to perform a key step in the purification process of the DNA plasmid starting material for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine candidate.

Chesterfield labs “indispensable” in developing the vaccine. “It is the decades of experience that the Pfizer Chesterfield labs have with manufacturing and testing biologicals, vaccines and nucleotides that enabled us to hit the ground running when Pfizer and BioNTech decided they were going to attempt to make a vaccine against Covid,” Amery said. Now that the frenzy to develop a vaccine has been replaced by a growing vaccinated population that is enjoying a summer reopening, Kenney reflected on some lessons learned. “The next 30 years of scientific progress is expected to bring about transformational therapies and potentially cures that we wouldn’t dare dream of

five years ago,” Kenney said. “But the entire health innovation ecosystem needs to rally to deliver on this opportunity with the same creative thinking we all applied for COVID-19. The urgency of COVID-19 has given us lessons that we hope will inform our efforts for decades to come.” To take a deeper look into how Pfizer became the first pharmaceutical company to deliver an effective COVID-19 vaccine, check out the National Geographic documentary, “Mission Impossible: The Race for a Vaccine.”

Congratulations to Class of 2021 Scholarship Winners!

C

ongratulations to the graduating class of 2021! As our community celebrates so many re-openings and people gather together again — perhaps for the first time in months — we celebrate you. The class of 2021 will forever be remembered for your ability to make the most out of an impossible situation. We admire your resilience, your positive outlook and your determination to make your high school experience the best that it could be. With you as our example, the future looks very bright indeed! Special congratulations, also, to the recipients of the Chesterfield Regional Chamber’s 2021 scholarships sponsored by Mickes O’Toole, LLC, and Midwest BankCentre. All four winners, who will each receive $1,000 toward their college educations, are exemplary students, active in our community and on their way to making a difference in our world.

Sarah Bergantz Marquette High School College: Clemson University Intended studies: Bioengineering with a biomaterials concentration Favorite subjects: “I always enjoyed science and art classes. The way that science gave direct answers but explained the way the world around me worked always opened up my eyes and piqued my interest. Labs, projects and dissections were my favorite moments, allowing me to watch the science displayed unfold in my hands. Similarly, art classes allowed me to manipulate things and to spill my creativity in my projects.” Activities and service: “As a social butterfly, I loved to stay involved in extracurricular activities. National Honor Society, Key Club, Krafts for Kids, Marquette basketball, soccer, volleyball and cross country were all activities I participated in through 30

my high school. Outside of school, I attended youth group at my church, was a small group leader for the Christian nationwide National Youth Gathering, played Lou Fusz Soccer, volunteered weekly at the Crisis Nursery, and participated in other volunteer opportunities. I wrote three grants to help Christ Community International, knit scarves for homeless individuals in St. Louis, and also got materials for the Crisis Nursery during the hardships of COVID-19.” What do you want to be when you grow up? Is your answer today the same as it was when you were five years old? “I have always loved the idea of medicine. For such a long time, I longed to be a doctor, performing medical procedures and treating patients. I came to realize, however, I would much rather be making the physical devices that allow individuals to recover and simply live their lives. So even though the concept behind my original 5-yearold dream and my current one are slightly different, they have the same roots and excite me for the future.”

Birch M. Fabregas Parkway South High School College: Saint Louis University Intended studies: Biology and Creative Writing, coding

Jordyn Gegg Parkway Central High School College: University of Missouri Intended studies: Business, Finance or Marketing

Favorite subjects: “Chemistry, history, biology, Spanish, English, even my grudging passion for physics — I am in love with every subject I’ve taken. If I had to choose, however, I would say science and foreign language have special places in my heart — or my brain, rather. I like knowing how things work, from the mechanics of nerve impulses to the morphemes of Japanese. I especially enjoyed taking anatomy this year. The (virtual) cadaver dissection was fantastic. Simply, if a ‘how’ exists, I am always asking why.”

Favorite subjects: “I enjoyed science, specifically human anatomy ... In business, I enjoyed learning the different methods of investing money and the different rules of finance. I also enjoyed marketing and creating ad campaigns for products. I also ran a small business with my partner, Jack Dean, during SPARK! Incubator where we retailed several types of the most comfortable and stylish face masks on the market during the pandemic. Jack and I placed as finalists in several pitch competitions where we won prize money to reinvest into our business. On top of that, we sold approximately $1,000 of masks to local clients and a hospital in Sarasota, FL.”

Activities and service: “I had a one-year foray into marching band (freshman year), debate (sophomore year), and rock climbing (junior year) … Academics have always been my main focus, however, so most extracurriculars I stuck with were outside of school, usually on the weekends. These have been mostly volunteer work (Missouri Baptist’s Emergency Dept.), baking, teaching myself foreign languages, and writing. … I hope to have completed a poetry collection by the end of August, and I am working on a debut novel.” What do you want to be when you grow up? Is your answer today the same as it was when you were five years old? “Definitely not! When I was a five-year-old, I was obsessed with all things cats and dogs. There was a space in my childhood room where I had pinned my (purple) curtains to my bed to create a small clinic. There, I treated all the imagined maladies a stuffed pug could have with my (purple) stethoscope. That interest has long since faded. Both the purple bit and the animal bit. I still remain interested in medicine — of the people sort, though. I’m still not set on any one career path, but whatever I do, I plan to do it well.”

chesterfieldmochamber.com

Activities and service: “The Parkway Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Initiative where a group of students, including myself, 3D-printed and distributed over 1,000 pieces of PPE to health professionals in the St. Louis area. I was also the team leader for the Parkway Central Robotics Team, Nuts + Colts, where we went on to place first in two tournaments and third in the state competition (2019-20). With several members of the robotics team, I participated in the Annual Gateway Arch Engineering Competition where we designed and presented a unique drainage solution for the left leg of the Arch monument to improve safety of the walkways. We placed first ... I was a goalkeeper on the Parkway Central soccer team.” What do you want to be when you grow up? Is your answer today the same as it was when you were five years old? “When I was five years old, my dream job was to be a race car driver in NASCAR. Now that I’m older … I hope to pursue real estate investing full time. … On top of being a great income, real estate investing is a fantastic way for me to support my community and the people who work to keep it running.” July-September 2021 | Out & About

Lenore Sayer Rockwood Summit High School College: University of Missouri (Honors College) Intended studies: International Business and Spanish Favorite subjects: “Spanish is my passion, and I have been very lucky to have amazing, supportive teachers. I also enjoy language arts classes. I love expressing myself through language, whether it is in Spanish, English or German. I think that the most engaging and impactful art form is language itself.” Activities and service: “I played piano for many years through private lessons. I love music — and having the opportunity to replicate famous pieces was amazing. I was also in the Gateway Book Club at my school. … One of my favorite activities is the Social Justice Club at my school. I have been in social justice clubs since middle school, and I was even able to attend the Diversity Awareness Program twice, along with WE Day, and the National Youth Summit on Education, Justice, and the U.S. Economy at UMSL. … I also worked at a local Walgreens in my neighborhood where I was able to connect with my community. Lastly, one of the most rewarding ways I spend my free time is through my tutoring. I tutor my peers and edit upwards of 12 essays annually. I love seeing the progress in their writing over the years and feeling like I am making a difference in their lives.” What do you want to be when you grow up? Is your answer today the same as it was when you were five years old? “When I was five, I would most likely have said I wanted to be famous. It is safe to say that my goals are a little different now. I am an aspiring businesswoman, specifically, a marketing advisor that advocates for struggling demographics. I seek to provide consumers in business deserts with the goods and services they need while working with my company on ways to give back and market ethically and sustainably.” 32

Men’s Jobs in Agrarian Chesterfield By Ann Chrissos, Chesterfield Historic and Landmark Preservation Committee

I

n the early days of Chesterfield, men worked long, hard hours. Most owned land on which cash crops, such as corn, wheat, melons and potatoes, were planted. Some of these farmers also ran side businesses, like blacksmithing and butchering. Many area farmers used hired laborers to help operate their farms. This was definitely true of men who worked at non-farm-related jobs. These jobs included banking, operating a ferry, water delivery, service station owners and attendants, mail carriers, general merchandise store owners, and employees of the Water Works Company. Some men managed to find the time and energy to serve as volunteer firemen and to play on local baseball teams. Chesterfield entrepreneurs helped the area to develop into a vibrant community.
