Did you know we live with rock stars?

ach day during the lockdown, I was amazed by the kindnesses, sacrifices and giving I witnessed as our community pulled together. The Chesterfield Regional Chamber continued to keep our members, residents and community connected and informed without skipping a beat. Our member businesses stepped up in ways small – and big. Pfizer is working to find a vaccine. Bayer made thousands of face shields. Ben Brown, owner of Satchmo’s, contacted everyone he knew to get restaurants a lifeline in serving drinks to go. Matt Kasten at Digital Docs, an esNora Amato sential business, kept his doors open when people needed their computers, tablets and phones fixed. Tony White, owner of Tony’s Family Farms, created a whole new line of businesses with delivery of fresh produce in bulk. The Chesterfield Police Department was there for the residents who had compromised immune systems and needed prescriptions and other items picked up. As our world paused, it gave me pause to realize how thankful I am for so many of you. To those of you who continued working at grocery and hardware stores, first responders, health care and delivery workers, teachers, tutors and everyone who quickly adjusted to working from home – you are appreciated. To the neighbors who picked up mail, prescriptions and groceries for each other and smiled, waved and said words of encouragement – you are appreciated. Covid-19 upended all of our lives – whether or not we actually contracted the virus. Here’s to those who delivered babies and those battling cancer who had to go to treatments alone. Here’s to those who couldn’t visit with their families due to age or compromised immune systems and to our college and high school graduates who still found ways to celebrate under the pandemic’s shadow. How proud your community is of you! Staying at home and cooking so much has opened my eyes to a great need in my life – cookbooks! If you’re as bored as I am with what you’ve been cooking, you’re in luck. The Chesterfield

Regional Chamber has created a cookbook as a fundraiser for our businesses and Chamber charities (Circle of Concern, Parkway Food Pantry, Rockwood Backpack Meal Program and first responders). You can pick up one for $20 at Dierbergs Market Place, the Chamber or at a Chamber member that is carrying them. With so much that has been canceled, we are especially excited to have our 33rd Annual Chesterfield Regional Chamber Summer Concert Series at Faust Park beginning on July 7. We are working closely with the St. Louis County Health Department to be able to offer our series safely. We are limited to 2,000 concertgoers as we go to press – and we will follow guidelines for social distancing. Tickets are $5 and include a mask. They can be purchased on our website or by calling our office 636-532-3399. As we enter these next months with uncertainty still clouding our future, it’s comforting for me to know that no matter what’s to come – we will navigate it together!

Helping your pet cope as you head back to work By Dana Lovett, DVM, Chesterfield Veterinary Center

uarantine was a busy time for your pets. Some enjoyed the extra attention – others not so much. Just when our furry friends adjusted to a new normal, their worlds are being turned upside down again as we head back to work. Whether you welcomed a new pet into your home or spent more time with your current pet, most pets will miss interacting with you. However, there are some things you can do to ease the transition and help your companion cope with your absence. Stick to a predictable schedule. A chaotic or unpredictable household induces stress and anxiety for pets. A scheduled time for feeding, walking, playtime, training sessions and one-on-one time instills confidence because your pet knows what to expect next. Teach your pet how to be alone. If you haven’t gone back to the office yet, schedule some alone time for your pets now. Go on a walk without your dog. Get them acclimated to their kennel as a safe retreat for short stints and see how they do before you plan to leave them for eight hours at a time. Some dogs do well in a kennel and others panic when confined; this is something you need to know before you head back to work. Take them to daycare to get some energy out and be social with other dogs. When you do head back to work, consider a dog walker, pet sitter or daycare for your dog for those long days. Learning just a few basic commands will go a long way to instill the confidence that our pets need to handle separation. Training should focus on positive reinforcement for those behaviors we desire. With training, we build trust and confidence and develop a strong human-animal bond. Cats can be trained with positive reinforcement too.

Enrichment is important to alleviate boredom. Look for puzzle or treat-dispensing toys to keep them engaged. Freeze food or peanut butter inside KONG® toys for prolonged chewing sessions. Set up a hunt for your cat’s meal times. Hiding a few pieces of kibble in toys or in random locations fills their need to hunt, slows down eating and offers exercise. Cat trees are essential and should include a stable, cozy resting spot with a view from up high. For added enrichment, place it in front of a window with a bird or squirrel feeder. Scratching posts are also recommended. Use your pet’s keen sense of smell to your advantage and help alleviate stress by installing pheromone diffusers (ADAPTIL® for dogs and FELIWAY® for cats). Bayer Team Pivots to Make Face Shields During Pandemic By Mary Shapiro Revamping tools and technologies to deal with a critical necessity – preventing the spread of Covid-19 – was the mother of invention for a team of tech experts working at Bayer’s Crop Science R & D facility in Chesterfield.

The team, using state-of-the-art design and 3D printing equipment, pivoted away from their day-to-day work earlier this spring in order to make face shields for health care workers, said Chet Barber, manager of Bayer’s Technical Discovery Center/TDC, located within the company’s innovation campus at 700 Chesterfield Parkway. And it’s been on a big scale – what started out as a relatively small project turned into a major production effort. In total, Barber’s team at the TDC

produced 22,100 face shields between early April and early May. “At the start of the project, the TDC was producing about 100 face shields per day, but, at peak production, we were able to ramp that number up to about 500 per day,” Barber said. He admitted he was immediately interested in how the company could offer help after he learned some of the ways people in his community were stepping up in the effort to battle Covid-19. He quickly realized that his workspace and colleagues were full of potential ways to help. Barber leads a team at the TDC which typically would be building new devices and machines designed to help scientists research new, more sustainable solutions for agriculture. But his team of 18 designers, fabricators and engineers realized they could reconfigure the 3D printers they use in agricultural research and shift to begin producing much-needed face shields. “Our machines are designed to produce various components, but it’s the flexibility of our team that made this project possible – their ability to focus on something, understand a need and come up with solutions very quickly that will help,” he said. “With existing resources, the team was able to produce every component of the shields: visors, frames and rubber bands, meaning they could be easily assembled and gotten into the hands of those who needed them fast,” Barber added. To ensure that production could keep pace with the need, the TDC team also worked directly with other companies in the community to help them produce medical shields in similar ways to support health care facilities in need. @chesterfieldmochamber

“Using open-source designs shared by Stratasys – a supplier to the TDC which coordinated the efforts of several manufacturers – Bayer made the masks, shipped them to Stratasys which then distributed masks to where they were most needed,” Barber said. What Barber and his team at the TDC have been doing to help protect health care professionals mirrors similar efforts in Bayer research centers around the world, he said. “Bayer’s global vision is ‘health for all, hunger for none.’ What our team accomplished is fully in line with that vision,” Barber said. “If you can help someone, you should. We can do our part and we are absolutely going to.” While the TDC is no longer producing face shields – because the manufacturing industry is meeting current demand – the crew would be able to swing back into production should the need ever arise again, he said. “It’s been rewarding for our team and the overall company to be part of the Covid-19 solution,” Barber said. “It’s been very energizing to see the support we’ve had from leadership and from the company.” Top: Chet Barber, Manager of the Technical Discovery Center at Bayer’s Chesterfield campus, holding a finished face shield produced by his on-site team. The Crossing did more than spread a message of hope. They organized a food drive to benefit four local food pantries, including Chamber member Circle of Concern, whose resources had been depleted due to increased need and reduced donations resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. On Saturday, May 9, more than 600 cars participated in the drive-thru food drop-off at the four food pantries. Circle of Concern received so much food – more than 12,000 pounds – that its team scrambled to find room for all the donations. Supporting the effort from afar, church members from around the country shipped more than 560 boxes of food from an Amazon wish list. “Not only were the four original organizations well served and their pantries refilled, but an additional five organizations were able to be served through the drive because of the outpouring of the church community,” Barron said.

This effort to spread encouragement and positivity turned into a full-fledged campaign in which the church asked its members to use their creativity and any materials on hand to create and display Hope Wins signs. Barron said the signs have been showing up everywhere – from front doors, sidewalks and car windows to painted rocks on community trails. “I think people are seeking hope. That’s why we’re seeing Hope Wins pop up everywhere,” 18

Curbside Carries New Walnut Grill through Pandemic By Mary Shapiro

resh, quality ingredients are the foundation for the success of Walnut Grill restaurant and bar based in Chesterfield Valley, which is thriving despite impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic. The restaurant, which opened about a month ago, is one of four area locations including Ellisville, O’Fallon, Mo., and Sunset Hills.

Chamber Board Director Eric Vogel started the concept with brother, Kirk, in 1996. “We own eight restaurants – four in Pittsburgh and the four local restaurants. Kirk owns and operates the ones in Pittsburgh, and I own and operate the ones in the St. Louis area,” he said. The restaurants were founded in Pittsburgh, Pa. – the first site was on Walnut Street in Shadyside, Pa. – “when four friends joined together with a common goal: to develop a full-service restaurant with a local feel, inviting to our guests and serving them with outstanding food and beverages,” Vogel said. Vogel described the restaurant as “an energetic, polished casual concept.” Breakfast and lunch menus currently are served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, with happy hours from 3 to 7 p.m., and a dinner menu available from 3 to 9 p.m. “Those are not normal hours,” Vogel said. “Covid has turned everything upside down – and once we get back to normal operations and 100 percent occupancy, hours will be more expanded.” Starter items on the Walnut Grill menu range from pickle fries and pretzel bites to chicken lettuce wraps. Entrees include grilled flatbreads and street tacos; fresh seafood ranging from lemon caper flounder to crab cakes; chicken and pasta dishes; bowls, sandwiches, wraps, salads, burgers and handcut steaks. Desserts include toasted almond cream cake and a cheesecake trio. Vogel’s favorite menu items include the ahi tuna tacos and a breakfast protein bowl. “I love the chicken spiedini, and my favorite desserts include the crème brulée,” he says. “Chesterfield is a good location,” Vogel added. “I have a few restaurants like Ellisville and O’Fallon, nestled into neighborhoods and not around power chesterfieldmochamber.com

centers or highways … We felt Chesterfield Valley would be a good power center spot for a restaurant, near I-64.” The Chesterfield location draws customers from St. Louis and St. Charles counties. During the Covid-19 pandemic, curbside has been a substantial part of the business. “Effective March 20, we went from fullservice to a carryout restaurant – and curbside represented 100 percent of our business for two months,” Vogel said. “Even now, carryout represents about 40 percent of the business, so it’s a huge part for us. At 25 percent occupancy under St. Louis County regulations, having carryout helps keep us going.” He said a huge factor in Walnut Grill’s success is the chef-driven menu. “But, also, we are highly engaged in the local community,” Vogel said. “When we enter a community, we’re engaged with local high schools, places of worship, general support of first responders and teachers – to ingrain ourselves in the area. Giving back is part of our business model. “I love being part of Walnut Grill. I love the restaurant industry and serving people. I’m a hospitality guy and have been doing it all my life. Being an owner and working with employees and a community is a passion of mine that I really enjoy.”

Dierbergs launched an “Easter Eggs in June” campaign to help save local jobs. The Covid-19 shutdown – and resulting canceled Easter egg hunts – devastated a local, family-owned company, American Carnival Mart (ACM), which depends on Easter egg sales. ACM partners with Canterbury Enterprises Inc., a sheltered workshop which employs over 90 individuals with developmental disabilities who fill the eggs with wrapped candy. Dierbergs set out to sell 3.5 million candy-filled eggs during the three-week campaign with proceeds going directly to ACM and Canterbury Enterprises.

To meet the demand for carryout and delivery, Good News Brewery started canning its 16 ounce beers at another brewery. The brewery had such a positive response from customers that it bought a new canning machine and plans on distributing to stores in the future.

When Covid-19 prevented its members from meeting with their certified health coaches in person, Profile by Sanford coaches began connecting with them on virtual platforms – where they were given specific nutritional education from registered dietitians, nutritionists and personal trainers and held accountable with stateof-the-art tools and technology. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Huntington Learning Center launched face-toface remote academic skills training and tutoring to complement its face-to-face in-center services. Huntington can do exam prep for the ACT, Stay Sharp Summer Programs – whatever the student needs – delivering 1-to-1 instruction remotely via Zoom, in center in Ellisville, or a combination of both.

Bayer’s Technical Discovery Center (TDC), located within the company’s innovation campus in Chesterfield, made a quick pivot this past spring to make face shields for health care workers on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic. At peak production, the TDC was producing up to 500 shields per day. In total, the TDC produced 22,100 face shields between early April and early May.

Chesterfield Music & Arts Festival Promises Big Talent, Big Fun By Mary Shapiro

eaturing concerts by national recording artists, juried fine art displays by more than 100 professional artists, a classic car show and dozens of other attractions, the first-ever Chesterfield Music & Arts Festival is set for Sept. 5 and 6 at the Chesterfield Amphitheater.

In conjunction with Visit St Louis, sponsors Bud Light, Bass Pro Shops and Outlaw Nation will present the festival, which also will feature a St. Louis-themed food garden, and cold domestic and craft beers. “This is our first year in the St. Louis market,” said Josh Cullen Brown, general manager of sponsor Outlaw Nation – a country/Southern rock radio format heard on several dozen FM radio stations nationwide, the closest being 101.3 FM The Outlaw in the Springfield-Branson area. Outlaw Nation produces various music and arts festivals nationwide and provides digital streams for more than 4,000 business customers. The primary stream (outlawnation.com/listen-live/) serves more than 11 million listener connections each month. Brown called Outlaw Nation “America’s largest provider of concert entertainment, serving more than 200 major festival events.” The festival won’t be a one-time event, he said. “Beginning in 2021, Lord willing, the Chesterfield festival will happen twice each year, once in the spring and once in the fall,” Brown said. He said the amphitheater was chosen for the event because “it is a beautiful venue to hold

a major festival, with eight acres of manicured landscape. It is, by far, the most attractive location in the entire St. Louis/St. Charles area.” Various performers, representing a variety of musical stylings, will be on stage at the festival, including American Idol’s Kree Harrison and Casey James, ABC’s Rising Star winner Jesse Kinch, Craig Wayne Boyd and Adam Wakefield from The Voice, and Grammy Award nominee Jacob Bryant. The entire concert lineup is available at chesterfieldartsfestival.com by clicking on CONCERTS. “The festival was founded by Outlaw Nation to provide communities an awesome weekend of great fun,” Brown said, adding that every effort will be made to comply with whatever social distance and other regulations are in place in St. Louis County at the time to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. “We’ll take head scan temperatures at the gate and won’t let people in with

fevers – and abide by all Missouri and Centers for Disease Control guidelines,” he said. “But there are eight acres at the site, and no one will be jammed together. We’ll have about 1,000 people at a time with us, even though we have space to hold 10,000 comfortably.” More than 100 visual artists, of various media, will also be on hand. Other activities will include 4H student participants showing off baby animals they’ve raised, as well as performances by groups such as the Flying Frisbee Dogs; games including laser tag; and dozens of fun contests and big prizes. “Our classic car show will feature cars like 1957 Chevys and 1931 pristine Model Ts, as well as a custom motorcycle show,” Brown said. He praised the Chesterfield community “which we think will attract people from various areas, throughout St. Charles and St. Louis counties.” Brown admits it’s fun being part of such festivals. “This is the most exciting job – we do 80 festivals each year in 40 markets – and seeing happy faces makes you feel good,” he said.

hesterfield was an Agrarian society prior to incorporation in 1988. Area farmers planted a variety of cash crops as well as kitchen gardens for family use. Harvesting was a long and arduous task. It began in July and concluded in October. Peaches were picked in July and sold at roadside stands. Also, in July neighbors helped each other to thresh their wheat. During much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, men, women and teens worked in the fields cutting

and gathering the crops. As technology advanced, one of the more prosperous farmers would purchase a threshing machine which he loaned to his neighbors. The thresher freed the women to prepare and serve food five times during the day: breakfast, mid-day, dinner, mid-afternoon and supper while the men gathered the wheat. Potatoes and melons were harvested in August, corn and apples in September and pumpkins in October. All cash crops were

hauled to downtown St. Louis by wagons pulled by horses or mules and later by trucks to be sold and transported on Mississippi River barges to various markets. By planting a variety of cash crops, farmers increased their chances of survival against floods, droughts, insects, blights and other catastrophes. Chesterfieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fertile soil, along with hard work, frequently produced large crop yields.
