Soft Skills for a Hard World “

Connect. Learn. Grow.

T

The hardest job kids face today is learning good manners without seeing any.” -Fred Astaire

Have you ever met a young person and thought to yourself, “Wow – what great manners. They will go places”? Today, more than ever, good manners stand out because, sadly, they seem to be the exception rather than the rule. I do not believe we are inherently born knowing how to act or present ourselves. It’s something we learn. So if we want to see our youth be more respectful, kind, community-centered, business savvy – we need to take them under our wing and mentor them. Our youth watch and learn from how we interact with each other. One thing that Dr. Eric Knost, former superintendent of Rockwood School District, said to our Leadership Chesterfield Class when touring Marquette High School was that we all, as a community, need to be “Champions for our Youth.” Teach them what we know and value. Some local businesses get the importance of soft skills and teach them to their new hires. Our two local family-owned grocery stores – Dierbergs and Schnucks – are wonderful examples. In the interview process and orientation, they teach that half the job is eye contact, smiling and saying hello. Acknowledge people. Ask if a customer has questions or needs help. And wish them a nice day. If you can master these skills, Dierbergs and Schnucks believe you will be successful. The people doing the hiring at most companies agree. According to LinkedIn’s 2019 Global Talent Trends report, 92% of human resources professionals say that soft skills matter as much or more than hard or technical skills. The Rotary Club of Chesterfield supports a program called Rotary Youth Leadership Academy. They teach “service before self,” leadership and getting involved in your community. Among the primary skills to learn are: •The handshake – Make it firm but not so strong that you hurt someone when gripping. 10

Out & About | July-September 2019

•Phone etiquette - Smile when answering the phone, listen to the caller and do not be distracted. •Punctuality – Arrive 15 minutes before your shift starts. •Follow through/take notes – If you cannot remember what your tasks are ask, take notes, repeat back or have your supervisor clarify. Winging it doesn’t cut it. •Clean cut and “dressed for success” – The night before Nora Amato work, lay out what you plan to wear. Be sure it is clean, pressed and appropriate. If you are not sure if jeans or a t-shirt are acceptable, err on the side of more formal attire until you know for sure. •If in doubt, ask your supervisor – If you have questions, others do as well. Communication is key to being successful and showing your colleagues that you are part of the team. •Follow through with what you say you will do and own your mistakes – You will make mistakes, and they are learning opportunities. •When a problem occurs, don’t be shy to ask for help from your supervisor and offer a solution, if possible – It may not be the right one, but it shows you are thinking about solving the problem already. No matter what our children grow up to do, how they interact with others will have an enormous impact on just how far they go. A scientist seeking the help of her peers, will get much more support if she has a good rapport with her colleagues. An entrepreneur seeking investors, will have much easier time winning over the room if he shows he sincerely cares about others. To quote Ferris Bueller (and betray my penchant for ‘80s pop culture), “Life moves pretty fast.” But let’s not forget the soft skills.

Nora Macalady Amato is the executive director at the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce. Reach her at 636-532-3399 or email nora@ chesterfieldmochamber.com.

How Do You Eat An Elephant?

Letter from the board. By David Weiss.

T

hat’s easy: one bite at a time! That is the same way you grow your business – one step at a time. Each year, the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce’s Business Education Committee lays out a series of programs on a number of topics which are believed to be of interest to our general membership. The committee tries to fit with members’ schedules and interests, and thus offers different formats and times for its programs. The Business Roundtable, at 7:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month, is a onehour informal setting usually featuring a couple of experts and a moderator inviting questions and leading the dialogue in an overview of a topic that delves into issues, either generally or in-depth, as the discussion dictates. programs have focused on strategic planning, preventing business fraud, increasing sales, “trial customers” and cryptocurrencies. The Chamber’s Business Over Breakfast series, at 7:30 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday every other month, is a more in-depth, David Weiss one-hour program, generally with more substance and greater take-aways. Programs have included individual tax planning, alternative financing and debt restructuring, internships in your organization and management of people and profit. Finally, the Chamber’s quarterly Lunch ‘N’ Learn is a more intensive 90-minute program, generally focused on training or a more in-depth study of a particular issue. Topics have included sales tax issues following the U.S. Supreme Court’s approval of internet sales taxes, employee motivation and retention strategies, exporting, and effectively using technology in your business. The Chamber also hosts its First Thursday Coffee series, an opportunity to network, brush up on your elevator pitch and get to know other business owners and managers. Our monthly General Membership Meeting, the third Wednesday of each month, is also a great way to network and be introduced to a business, community or civic topic. Brushing up on your business acumen is likely going to lead to your thinking differently about how you approach business – whether it’s your business or a business you’re responsible for. Making acquaintances, or building familiarity and trust, leads to long-term business relationships which leads to more business. What’s stopping you from taking that first bite?

David Weiss, an attorney at Sandberg Phoenix & von Gontard P.C., is chair-elect of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Dedicated to exceeding your expectations ... always!

Would You Lend Money to Your Business? Consider the lender’s point of view

H

ave you ever loaned money to a family member or friend? How was your experience? Did you charge interest? Did you get paid and on time? Would you do it again? Imagine starting a company with thousands of dollars available for loans to perfect strangers. What questions, if any, would you ask? When businesses approach credit acquisition, they tend to view the process as an infinite money spiral. Lenders, on the other hand, view the process with great caution. There’s a Jim Mosquera natural tug of war between business-owner borrowers and lenders: •While business owners are risk seekers, lenders avoid risk. •A business owner’s world view is bathed in optimism. The lender anguishes about what might go awry. •While all businesses face some form of regulation, it’s difficult to match the regulatory shackles of the banking industry. In our consulting practice, we help businesses find capital when challenged by standard approaches. Regardless of the financing source, there are important preparatory steps before seeking capital. Has the business established a credit history via trade partners or otherwise? Does the business have a plan? A business plan not only serves as a great way to share the vision and story, it also serves as a management tool. Is there a budget? This financial document demonstrates the business owner has carefully considered cash flow. An often ignored consideration is the exit plan. What would have to occur before a business owner made the painful decision to shutter the operation? Any lender is going to evaluate business factors. Ideally, the business has sufficient collateral, even though lenders never want to possess it. The business should have a history of financial strength and sufficient cash flow. And legal considerations cannot be ignored. How would you feel about lending money to a business that was chesterfieldmochamber.com

the subject of a lawsuit? It’s often the case that a loan to a business is also a loan to an individual. Lenders understand that some borrowers may attempt to seek shelter behind a corporate veil. That’s why loan and trade contracts often have a personal guarantor. As an individual, your credit score is your foundation. While you may be able to obtain financing with a lower score, it will be more expensive. Also, don’t expect the lender to assume all risk – you’ll need to have skin in the game. Finally, just as legal issues can hurt a business’s ability to secure capital, being the subject of personal legal issues can also impair the ability to obtain credit. Business credit is all about confidence. Planning ahead – with an eye toward a lender’s chief concerns – can boost the confidence of both parties.

Jim Mosquera is principal at Sentinel Consulting.

29 feet or higher as measured at the Hermann, Mo., gauge is the Missouri River level at which the city of Chesterfield enacts its “Valley Watch” to trigger a heightened level of awareness among city officials, the Monarch–Chesterfield Levee Districts and Chesterfield Valley property owners. A “Valley Advisory” is not initiated unless the Missouri River, as measured at the Hermann gauge, reaches a level of 36 feet which roughly correlates to a water surface elevation that is 12 feet below the top of the levee. Heavy rainfall in the upper Midwest and the St. Louis in May and June resulted in the Missouri River rising above the flood stage and a “Valley Watch” being issued. As of this printing, a “Valley Advisory” has not been issued.

The St. Louis Blues won their 1st Stanley Cup in club history – clinching the victory in a 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins in game seven of the championship series. 2019 marked the first time the Blues had returned to the Stanley Cup finals in 49 years. In 1970, they also faced off against the Boston Bruins and lost. Until this historic victory, the Blues (formed in 1967) were the oldest active NHL team never to have won the Stanley Cup. LGB!

Red Arrows and Blue Angels Promise Spectacular Display at Spirit Air Show By Eli Andrews St. Louis Is One of Three Air Shows Where the Two Elite Teams Will Perform Together Mark your calendars! One of St. Louis’ biggest events, the 2019 Spirit of St. Louis Air Show & STEM Expo, is landing at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield Sept. 7-8, 2019. It’s a big deal whenever the air show comes to town – but the anticipation surrounding this year’s event is sky high because the U.K. Royal Air Force’s (RAF) Red Arrows will appear alongside the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels. Paul Guse, director of marketing and public relations for the air show, says the Blue Angels, on their own, are a “big draw” – but the rare chance to see the Red Arrows flying overhead with their red, white and blue smoke trails is sure to have even more spectators craning their necks toward the skies above Chesterfield this fall. “The Red Arrows are making six stops in the U.S. this year, and only three shows where the Red Arrows and the Blue Angels will perform together,” says Guse. “We’re in a very elite status being one of these shows.” The Red Arrows aren’t just one of the best aerobatic flying teams in the world, but also a fixture of British history. Formed in late 1964 to represent the RAF, the BAE Systems Hawk jets with their bright red design and “Diamond Nine” formation have left countless viewers in awe over the years. They will begin their North American tour in July and visit only six U.S. locations including – for the first time – St. Louis. John Bales, air show president and director of aviation at Spirit of St. Louis Airport, considers this a major win for the show. “Our team strives to reach new levels each time we stage an air show, but we were incredibly excited when the Red Arrows recently added us to their North American schedule,” says Bales. “This truly will be an air show like no other.” chesterfieldmochamber.com

How did St. Louis make the cut? “I believe we were selected due to the combination of the deep aerospace heritage of the St. Louis region, including being home to our presenting sponsor Boeing and our mutual focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math),” says Bales. “During their advance visit in March, the team leadership specifically mentioned our air show’s focus on STEM education and the high importance they also place on inspiring young people to pursue those careers. “While we are not completely surprised they picked us, we are certainly thrilled,” he adds. “Being one of three worldwide events to host both the Blue Angels and Red Arrows in the same world-class air show is an honor and privilege.” You might be more familiar with the Blue Angels, whose navy blue-and-yellow F/A-18 Hornets have performed daredevil feats that have captivated audiences for decades. They were first formed in 1946, making them one of the oldest flying demonstration and aerobatic teams in the world. They will perform in 32 U.S. locations in 2019 including the Spirit Air Show, which last saw them fly in 2016. The show will also feature many more flying demonstrations, both in the air and on the ground. Attractions will include the RAF’s famous Supermarine Spitfire and the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team’s T-6 Texans (both icons of WWII), as well as the U.S. Air Force’s iconic F-22 Raptor stealth fighter and daredevil pilot Skip Stewart performing deathdefying stunts in his Pitts S-2S Special biplane. And we haven’t even covered Patriots’ Landing, the military/ veterans pavilion at the show. Currently registered to participate are the Missouri Air National Guard and VFW, while the Navy League, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Black Daggers and Army Reserves are also expected to make an appearance. Robotics will be back with student-built robots, demonstrations, and possibly even a chance for guests to try their hand at operating a robot. The expo will also have exhibits showing how light pollution negatively impacts many aspects of life; family activities such as making paper helicopters, building aluminum foil boats, tangrams, etc.; an exhibit that displays how biodiesel is made; astronomy-related exhibits where experts will teach kids of all ages how to use telescopes; virtual reality exhibits; the ever-popular Boeing Rocket Launcher Station, and much more. The STEM Expo was first introduced in 2014 with a simple goal: let the younger generation learn about and experience the effects and power of STEM and the fields they could go into that use it – like aviation. Various school districts around St. Louis have participated since the beginning, and universities are starting to get involved as well. McMichael says this is a great chance for them to show off their potential. “We have a terrific lineup of schools, colleges and businesses who are anxious to show all that this region is doing to create futures for our next generation, and keep the legacy of aviation alive in St. Louis,” says McMichael.

U.S. Navy Blue Angels STEM and aviation have worked hand in hand to become an integral part of St. Louis’ history and identity. What better way to explore and enjoy this rich legacy than by attending the Spirit of St. Louis Air Show & STEM Expo this fall? With a dazzling air show featuring two of the world’s premier flying teams – and an entertaining celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics – you won’t want to miss it!

W

hen guests visit Innsbrook for the first time, they always have the same reaction – How is it possible that we didn’t know such an incredible place existed, practically in our own backyard? Innsbrook is often referred to as Missouri’s best-kept secret because even lifelong area residents are shocked by the breathtaking views, gorgeous natural landscape and the sense of tranquility that emanates from every niche of the 7,500-acre community. With more than 100 lakes, Innsbrook features sandy beaches, a world-class golf course, dining, hiking trails, an aquatic center and equestrian trails, among other amenities. Above all, property owners value the opportunity Innsbrook offers to be in sync with nature, whether they own a primary residence or a recreational property that serves as a home away from home. An Ideal Escape from Life’s Chaos Just 30 minutes west of Chesterfield, Innsbrook provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life for families seeking to unplug and unwind. Whether you prefer to relax in a hammock, aboard your sailboat or paddleboard, around a campfire, or with an amazing view of Innsbrook’s spectacular annual Fourth of July celebration, you won’t need to scroll through your phone screen to find multiple ways to take it easy. Of course, not every moment spent at Innsbrook is focused on downtime. With a full lineup of community events including concerts and live music of all genres, fitness and lifestyle classes, kids’ camps and workshops, sports tournaments, clubs and games – visitors can be intentional about participating in the activities they find most meaningful. Connecting with Nature Nourishes and Revitalizes Spending time in and among nature simply has no substitute – research shows it nourishes the body, mind and soul. Unfortunately, many of us lack daily access to the full breadth and depth of our world in its natural state. Innsbrook’s vast rolling hills and valleys, sparkling waters and mature forest allow visitors to immerse themselves totally in nature – with all the comforts of home just steps away. The

26

resort boasts beautiful residential and recreational getaways nestled discretely amongst the trees, letting you witness and experience nature, even while you’re indoors. Guests and property owners enjoy watching the busy wildlife – including deer, turkey, songbirds and waterfowl – in their natural habitats. Residents delight in living in harmony with nature by looking out for, tracking, photographing and observing the local environment’s ever-evolving processes, whether that means the ebb and flow of water in the spring-ways, the deer or turtles crossing a trail, or the fledging of new bluebird chicks. Forging Family Bonds to Last a Lifetime Part of what makes Innsbrook so special is how the community brings families together to connect across generations, in a way that may not

happen amidst the typical techfrenzied family backdrop of overscheduled activities, video games, fast food and long hours at work and school. Innsbrook’s culture helps parents spend quality time with their kids, whether oneon-one or as a family unit. It also allows grandparents the occasion to form a strong bond that bridges generational gaps. Families can even visit the resort’s century-old restored log cabin while sharing their own family histories and traditions with each other. Safety is always a top priority at Innsbrook, and families can play in the water with the peace of mind that comes with knowing Innsbrook has no gas-powered boats. Likewise, parents find solace in knowing they can safely allow their children to just be kids, exploring the woods, climbing trees, building forts and playing with friends within the borders of the expansive gated community. It’s the best of both worlds – the fun and independence parents remember from their childhood days within the safe boundaries they crave for their own children. Fishing, strolling, hiking and boating in Innsbrook’s serene surroundings sets the stage perfectly for those important family heart-to-hearts, while splashing in the lake or having a picnic together helps families create lifelong cherished memories and continue to cultivate family relationships long after returning to everyday life. It’s these memories that prompt kids raised with Innsbrook in their life to bring their own children back time and again, and share Missouri’s best-kept secret with everyone who’ll listen. Explore all of Innsbrook’s offering - current available properties, vacation activities, golf tee times and more – or schedule a personal tour with one of Innsbrook’s expert agents at ibkfamily.com.

Leadership Chesterfield Class of 2019

S

ince 2002, the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce has hosted Leadership Chesterfield, an eight-session leadership course that helps business and community leaders understand the issues, challenges and future plans of our city. Participants rotate through a series of daylong visits with leaders in business, government, nonprofit organizations and education – while building lasting professional and business contacts. In May, we graduated our 18th Leadership Chesterfield class. We sat down with one of our 13 graduates – James Skorburg, digital communications specialist with the Parkway School District – to get his take on the experience. What did you think about Leadership Chesterfield? I loved it! I am a St. Louis guy, born and raised here, went through the Parkway School District – but I like rediscovering what Chesterfield is all about. I James Skorburg feel like it’s pretty easy for people to drive past a ton of different things, get lost in their day-to-day stuff, but knowing what’s around us – the greatness that’s around us – is definitely cool. What has been a key benefit of the program? You make long-term networking business relationships just because within this program there are so many different industries that come into play. We have seven to eight days where we do different things throughout the community. Since I did the education day, I was able to show off some of the things that Marquette and Parkway do. So it’s cool to see the work that we’re so used to doing every day and showing that to our community members – and then getting feedback and being able to bring some challenges to them and have them bring some of their know-how from their industries and their points of view. What did you learn about Chesterfield that surprised you?

28

Out & About | July-September 2019

We visited Wings of Hope at Spirit of St. Louis Airport. I think Wings of Hope is a great example of how a nonprofit organization out here at Spirit Airport is able to help somebody 400-500 miles outside of the city of St. Louis. I think that’s pretty incredible. Also, we visited MoDOT (Missouri Department of Transportation) and learned that the state of Missouri is one of the top states in number of miles of roadways in the nation (5th nationally in interstate highway miles and 7th nationally in state highway miles), which I thought was really interesting. You think St. Louis, you don’t think roadways – especially thinking of California and significantly larger states. Our transportation system is very complex. What’s one takeaway from Leadership Chesterfield that was particularly valuable to you? I would say that it’s really just about putting yourself out there. I feel like being a younger member of Leadership Chesterfield, I think it’s easy to stay with what I know. But being able to put myself out there with people from all different industries, I was able to learn a lot from everybody. Do you think you will keep in touch with your fellow graduates? Yes. I’ve known these people now for the better part of half a year and, within those days, I feel like you learn about them and you get comfortable with them. It’s easy to get a networking relationship, but I feel like I’m close with these people - that I could always talk to them if I had a problem and they would be there for me. @chesterfieldmochamber

BCI Skills Center Is a WinWin for Businesses and People with Disabilities By Dee Gerstenkorn

A

Acording to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, almost 80 percent of men and women with disabilities are not in the labor force – and many would like to work. Chesterfield Chamber member and nonprofit BCI is helping create new and innovative opportunities for this very able population. Founded as a sheltered workshop in 1959, today BCI is an advocate and employment catalyst for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The organization’s employment continuum model offers work and training opportunities for people of all ability levels. The continuum’s newest addition, the Skills Center, opened in January. Connecting People to Training to Jobs The BCI Skills Center is a first-of-itskind vocational training facility for people with disabilities. With local business partnerships at its core, the Skills Center connects people to training and then to jobs – good jobs. At the same time, this ready and able pool of employees is helping the partner companies address their labor shortages. The Skills Center currently offers two programs but plans to strategically expand to more than 100 students by 2021. “Working with our business partners, we create an exact curriculum,” says Todd Streff, Skills Center executive director. “Quite often, these are jobs that weren’t open to people with disabilities even two or three years ago. Now, we are training the students with disabilities, we’re training the people who will be employing them – and the results have been very promising for everyone.” In addition to vocational training, each student at the Skills Center learns vital soft skills chesterfieldmochamber.com

including appearance, attitude, verbal and nonverbal communication, teamwork, problem solving, financial literacy, interviewing, networking and more. “Inclusion Revolution” Benefits People with Disabilities BCI knows the difference that meaningful work can make for individuals and families. Having a job increases social status and provides regular social interaction and opportunities for other integrated activities. The income affords personal choices for spending money. And being engaged in worthwhile activities such as work increases selfesteem and promotes individual growth. “At BCI, we meet each individual where they are and can challenge them up through the continuum as far as they want to go,” says CEO Tony

Spielberg. “The Skills Center is the next chapter of our ‘inclusion revolution’ – and what it is doing in our community is incredibly exciting.” Strong Business Case for Employers Providing meaningful work for everyone requires executives who are willing to step up to the plate. Thankfully, there is a strong business case for companies to hire job seekers with disabilities. While requiring supervision equal to that

Student Success As a young man, Adam F. was misdiagnosed with Bipolar Disorder but later properly diagnosed as highfunctioning Autism. Although he tried many times, Adam was unsuccessful in finding work on his own. Then he found BCI. In 2014, Adam was hired into BCI’s Organizational Employment program. As his confidence grew, so did his performance. By 2018, he was asked to join BCI’s staff as a quality auditor. While working at BCI, he met his girlfriend Amber, earned his Missouri driver’s license, proposed and bought his first home. While Adam was flourishing, BCI was preparing to open its new Skills Center. When the center opened in January 2019, Adam was one of the first students in the Salesforce® program. Today, Adam has completed his instruction at the Skills Center and is preparing to take the Junior Salesforce Administrator certification exam. Adam’s success shows how BCI’s employment continuum can make all the difference for people with disabilities who want a place in today’s workforce. 32

of their co-workers, employees with disabilities have equal to or better reliability and retention rates, safety records, job performance ratings and assignment flexibility. Employers who welcome people with disabilities into their workforce can experience reduced turnover and retraining costs, as well as improved morale and productivity. Customers like the idea, too – with 87 percent preferring businesses that employ people with disabilities and 92 percent returning to support them. Businesses may also benefit from state and federal incentive programs. Navigating Benefits Even when businesses extend their hiring search to people with disabilities, they still face several barriers to employment. Oftentimes complicated issues regarding Social Security, Medicaid, the Ticket to Work and other federal programs can keep people with disabilities from pursuing the jobs they want. That’s why BCI, with funding from the Developmental Disabilities Resource Board of St. Charles County, added a benefits case manager with the hiring of Sandy Weitkamp. With 25 years of experience as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for St. Charles and St. Louis counties, Sandy helps people navigate benefits to see whether they can successfully enter the competitive workforce. Sandy’s planning services are available not only to Skills Center students but to anyone in the region. BCI knows that people with disabilities can accomplish amazing things – and careers are no exception. To learn more about how you, your loved one, or your business could benefit from partnering with BCI, contact Skills Center Executive Director Todd Streff at 636-875-5251.

Ya Ya’s - A Neighborhood Favorite for 20 Years

W

hen you walk into Ya Ya’s, don’t expect everyone to shout out your name á la “Cheers.” But if you’re a regular, there’s a pretty good chance the management and staff know your name.

“If you walk around the dining room with me tonight, I could name 75 percent of the people,” says General Manager John Miller. Ya Ya’s has quite a few regulars. Some have been coming to the restaurant for 10-plus years. “We’ve got great regular guests. Some regular guests are here multiple times per week. Some regular guests visit us four times a year for every special occasion – every birthday, every anniversary, every Mother’s Day,” Miller says. What keeps them coming back? “What I hear from our guests is, number one, consistency: ‘You always have great food and great service’,” Miller explains. “That’s what PB&J Restaurants means: it’s as simple as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Just work on those two things every day.” Many locals don’t realize that Ya Ya’s is part of the PB&J Restaurants chain. Miller says that’s intentional. PB&J’s owners encourage Miller and his team to “run this restaurant like it’s ours.” That sense of ownership translates into a staff that cares about the business and each other “because we’re all in this together.” “It feels like a family-run business,” says Executive Chef Alex Hayworth. That family feel is underscored by a number of managers and staff who have built their careers here. Hayworth started in 2005 as a line cook, Miller joined the restaurant in February 1999 as a server and sous chef, and Executive Sous Chef Jerry Kiner started as an hourly line cook in January 1999. A number of servers and bartenders have worked at the restaurant for 15 or more years. (Fun fact: PB&J recognizes 15 years of service with a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Seven employees at Ya Ya’s in Chesterfield have received a Harley.) Ya Ya’s menu is both family friendly and date-night ready with entrees that range from wood-fired pizzas to beef tenderloin with chiantigorgonzola sauce, potato purée and haricot verts. “If you want a white tablecloth dinner, we chesterfieldmochamber.com

can give you that. If you just want to feel relaxed and comfortable, we can give you that,” explains Kiner. “We’re in between casual dining and fine dining. We’re fun dining,” Miller explains as he gestures toward a nearby booth. “We’re going to put a tablecloth and flowers on this table over here because that guy’s going to propose this evening.” St. Louis Family Magazine recently included Ya Ya’s in its list of family-friendly restaurants. “We’ve got a nice, friendly staff,” says Miller, “and that goes a long way with parents and kids.” Chesterfield locals often comment that you can’t get a bad meal at Ya Ya’s. But, of course, nobody’s perfect. “Every once in a while, we make a bad meal,” Miller says. “We made a bad meal today, but we fixed it. We went over and explained that we made a mistake. That’s not going to be on the bill because it didn’t come out right the first time. We’re honest. “We took great care of the guest – and they left happy.” People come for the food, but Miller says the restaurant’s secret sauce is hiring the best people. “We want nice people who live the house rules: do what’s right, do your best, show you care and have fun. That’s what Ya Ya’s is all about,” Miller says. “It’s a great neighborhood restaurant where everybody knows you.” Ya Ya’s 15601 Olive Blvd., Chesterfield yayasstl.com 636-537-9991 July-September 2019 | Out & About

2019 Scholarship Winners

Every year, the Chesterfield Chamber recognizes four local high school students with $500 college scholarships for outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements. This year’s scholarships were provided by chamber member Mickes O’Toole, LLC, Attorneys at Law. Meher Arora, Parkway North What were your favorite subjects in school? Why?

I’ve always had a passion for science because it was the only subject that allowed us to get handson and design experiments and not be engrossed in a textbook. I also really enjoy math, but definitely not geometry (yikes!).

opportunities.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Is your answer today the same as it was when you were 5 years old? When I was little, my mom got me one of those doctor kits, and I became obsessed with it. As my passion for science grew, I knew I wanted to be a doctor. After doing research in STARS (summer program), I became a little conflicted about whether I want to pursue a M.D., Ph.D., or both. I definitely want to have a career in science. If that doesn’t work out, I can fall back on music which is a huge passion of mine. Emma Leary, Marquette High School

What were you involved in, both in and outside of school?

What were your favorite subjects in school? Why?

I joined the Vikettes Varsity Dance Team and became captain my senior year. I participated in North’s a cappella group. I made the All-State Choir twice and participated in district and state solo/ ensemble festivals each year. As part of our Medical Club, I shadowed a trauma surgeon - one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had! I was secretary and president of our math honors society. I was president of the National Honors Society. I took a job my junior year as a paid vocalist for a church choir comprised of elderly people who are very loving and extremely knowledgeable about music. This “job” has been a blessing in my life.

My favorite subject is language arts. I’m obsessed with reading and love almost all genres.

Where are you going to college? Any thoughts on what you might major in? Washington University in St. Louis. I am planning on majoring in biology/biochemistry on the premed track and minoring in vocal performance. What are you are looking forward to most in college? I am looking forward to undergraduate research 34

What were you involved in, both in and outside of school? I was the president of National Honor Society, senator in Student Council, secretary of media for Key Club, and a member of Renaissance and Tri-M Music Honor Society. I played viola in orchestra and helped out with the Parkway-Rockwood Honors Orchestra. I also have a job at the St. Louis Carousel at Faust Park, and I volunteered for Butterfly Dreams and the St. Louis County Library. Where are you going to college? Any thoughts on what you might major in? The University of Missouri. I am undecided about my major but have a strong interest in science. I will be studying in Mizzou’s Honors College as a Show-Me @chesterfieldmochamber

Scholar, so I hope to gain experience across subjects and find what I am truly passionate about. What are you are looking forward to most in college? I am most looking forward to studying abroad. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Is your answer today the same as it was when you were 5 years old?

Loyola University Chicago. Having taken an environmental sustainability class and loving it, coupled with the charity events I coordinated for people struggling with water crises, has pushed me to explore environmental policy as a major. I am also considering global and international studies, as well as public health. What are you are looking forward to most in college?

I want to have the ability to travel, to be independent yet connect with others and, most important, to feel like what I am doing matters. I interned at BRDG Park at the Danforth Center which specializes in genetics, and I really enjoyed it. This may be a career path. As a 5-year-old, I wanted to be a fashion designer. Harper Stewart, Parkway West What were your favorite subjects in school? Why? English. I used to hate reading and writing. That changed in second grade when I stumbled upon my first “big person” book: “Sisters of the Sword.” With daring heroines, ruthless enemies and a peek into another world so different from my own, I discovered that literature could be so much more than the picture books we read in class. What were you involved in, both in and outside of school? I was a member of National Honors Society, as well as honors organizations in science, math, English and history. I was also part of the freshman mentoring program, Link Crew. I participated in lacrosse for three years and had a stint on the swim team my sophomore year. Outside of school, I was a leader in training at Camp Foley in Minnesota, and I returned to camp last summer as an intern. I also co-coordinated two benefit concerts for the people of Puerto Rico and Flint, Mich. Where are you going to college? Any thoughts on what you might major in? chesterfieldmochamber.com

Definitely exploring Chicago.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Is your answer today the same as it was when you were 5 years old? At five I went around telling people I was going to be a lawyer like my father and a rockclimbing instructor on the side. Going into college considering environmental policy seems like an echoing of that same little girl’s dreams, combining a passion for the outdoors with the inner workings of the American legal system. Evan Zhang, Marquette High School What were your favorite subjects in school? From a young age, I’ve enjoyed the challenge of solving difficult problems and feeling a sense of accomplishment which has led me to develop a strong passion for math and engineering courses, especially physics. What were you involved in, both in and outside of school? I was involved in National Honor Society, Model UN and cross country. My most memorable extracurricular was being involved a new club called TEDx, where a group of other students and I organized and ran a real TEDx conference for students and faculty. Outside of school, I was mainly involved in volunteering as a teaching assistant for a martial arts class at the St. Louis Modern Chinese July-September 2019 | Out & About

School. Where are you going to college? Any thoughts on what you might major in? The University of Michigan, most likely majoring in computer science or another engineering-related major. What are you are looking forward to most in college? I’m definitely looking forward to having the freedom to go explore anything I want but also getting to meet new people. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Is your answer today the same as it was when you were 5 years old? At five, I aspired to copy my father and become a chemical engineer. Despite being so young, I had chosen a dream job I wanted in relatively the same field as the job I want today: a software engineer. I may not have gotten the type of engineer right, but I knew I wanted to be an engineer or have an occupation in the STEM field.
