Held in the Surakartra region of Central Java, this festival features both traditional and contemporary performance art with an overriding theme of celebrating cultural diversity. This year’s focus is on the rich history of the indigenous Solo people of Surakartra, which is showcased through dance, music and mesmerising traditional costumes.

This annual event holds the title for the largest folk festival in the world, attracting six million visitors a year.
