Funding will grow Ontario’s mining sector, protect jobs and boost economic resilience in the face of U.S. tariffs
The Ontario government is securing the province’s economic future by investing more than $7 million to launch a new intake of the Critical Minerals Innovation Fund (CMIF) to help stimulate investment in critical minerals exploration, mining development, production and processing of domestically sourced critical minerals. As part of its Critical Minerals Strategy, the province continues to make historic investments in Ontario’s mining sector to support Ontario’s emerging end-to-end critical minerals supply chain that will support the province’s manufacturing needs, with critical minerals mined and refined in Ontario, by Ontario workers.

NorthernOntarioHighway UpgradeProposalAimsto UniteCanadaSafely andBoosttheEconomy
The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) is spearheading a majorinfrastructureproposal(seeAppendixA)to improveeconomicefficiency, safetyandnational connectivity by calling on the Governments of Canada and of Ontario to invest in a transformative upgrade of Northern Ontario's Highways 11 and 17 — the Trans-Canada Highway — by upgrading to the innovative 2+1 modelonthosehighways.
The plan, aligned with the Building Canada Act and Prime Minister Carney's five nation- building criteria, outlines a two-phase approach to modernize key segments of the Trans-CanadaHighwaysystem: Phase1of2+1expansion:
- Highway11:NorthBaytoCochrane
- Highway17:RenfrewtoSudbury Phase2of2+1expansion:
- Highway11:CochranetoNipigon
- Highway11/17:ThunderBaytoKenora
- Highway17:SaultSte.MarietoSudbury
"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in infrastructure that promotes enhanced trade between the east and west within Canada. It also focuses on the development of major nation-building projects thatwilllikelyinvolvethetransportationoflarge industrialmaterialsforconstruction.Withavast land area and diverse geography, an efficient transportationnetworkiscrucialforconnectivity and facilitating the movement of materials," statedDannyWhalen,FONOMPresident.
The 2+1 model, prominent on European highways, featuresalternatingpassinglaneswith a crash-rated median barrier, offering a costeffective and safer alternative to full highway twinning. This model is particularly suited to long-distancerouteswithmoderatetraffic volumes, suchasthoseinNorthernOntario.

The Brownlee Memorial Chapel was erected in the Chapleau Municipal Cemetery in 1936byRichardBrownleeinmemoryofhisfirst wifeEllen.
Mr. Brownlee had arrived in Chapleau in 1885, and established a barber shop. In 1887, he marriedandhebroughthiswifeEllentoChapleau. She was one of the few women there at the time. Bothwere19. Mrs.Brownleediedin1936,andin 1938hemarriedMarieJeanneLeclerc.
In the Brownlee papers which have been kindly lent to me by Margaret Rose and Bobby Fortin, Mr. Brownlee, in his own handwriting explainswhyhehadthechapelbuiltinmemoryof hiswife.
"This building was erected in memory of theonewhowassoloving, loyalandcongenial;a companionallourmarriedlifeofforty-nineyears. To her kind and intelligent sympathy in my work and welfare, I owe a debt which can only be acknowledgedbutneveradequatelyrepaid.R.B."
Followinghiswife'sdeath,Mr.Brownlee applied to the municipal cemetery board to build thechapel,andT.R.Serre,thetownshipclerkand treasurer, also secretary-treasurer of the board repliedonAugust25,1936.
The letter read in part that the board authorizedhimtoproceedwiththebuildingofthe vault in the centre of the roadway... according to theplansubmitted.
The Chapleau Post reported that the building would be about 14 feet by 18 feet. The basement would accommodate 10 caskets equippedwithoneofthe"latestmodelsoflowering devices for lowering the caskets into the basement.
"The main part of the building will be a chapel with an altar in the centre and a vestment roomontheside."Therewouldalsobeafurnace.
The architect was W.C Sylvester and the

OnNovember11,1936,Mr.Brownlee,in a letter to the cemetery board reported that the projecthadbeencompleted. "Inowformallyturn it over to you to be held in perpetuity by you and your successors in office as a gift from me to the CitizensofChapleau."
He attached two conditions: "First that it shall be known as the 'Brownlee Memorial Chapel',and"Secondthatyouandyoursuccessors inofficeshallalwayspermittheuseoftheChapel by all persons, regardless of Race, Religion or Creed, who may desire to be buried in the ChapleauMunicipalCemetery."
Hisletteradded:"Itrustthatthesesimple conditions will always be fulfilled, and that the Chapelwillprovetobeabenefittothecommunity in which I have lived so long, and a fitting MemorialtomydearWifeinwhosememoryithas beenerected."
In replying to Mr. Brownlee in a letter datedNovember14,1936,ReeveFrankEdwards, alsochairofthecemeteryboardwrote.inpart"...I wishtoconvey.warmestthanksanddeepappreciation of your munificent gift of the Brownlee Memorial Chapel. Reeve Edwards added that the municipal cemetery board "unhesitatingly accepts the conditions of your gift as outlined in your letter and will loyally and gratefullyobservethem."

On a very personal note, Mr. Brownlee also took time for a little boy who would wander over the Brownlee Block on Main Street to chat with the men who would gather in front of the barbershop.MyfatherJimMorrishadbeenkilled on active service in the RCAF in World War II, and of course Mr. Brownlee was aware of it.
