ThelocallyshotshortfilmTHELAKEhas receivedfivenominationsfromtheBerlin Film Fest International. Nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Short Film is Logan Taylor. Nominated for Best Producer are Noah Taylor, Gabe Taylor, and Steve Schmidt Nominated for Best Director of a Short Film, Steve Schmidt. The film is also nominated for BestShortFilmandBestVisualStorytelling.

“Thisisanextraordinaryandunexpected result,” says director Steve Schmidt. “We are beyondthrilledandasfarasI'mconcerned,thisis a big win for us. Especially as Logan was the raison d'être of the film, it is particularly gratifying to see his actingrecognized.”

The short film came together when director Schmidt paired Logan Taylor's desire to act with a script he had received from a film industry friend. “At the

time, I thought the shoot would be a great learning experience for Logan - as wellastherestofus. Icould hardly imagine our modest venture would succeed to this extent.” The awards ceremony is slated for December11th.

October was warmer than average provincewide.Fromthemapbelow,wecansee adiagonalgradientacrosstheprovincewiththe highest values for mean temperature anomaly inthenorthwestdecreasingtothesoutheast. On finer time scales, the first week was the warmest of the month marked by recordbreaking high temperatures that swept across theprovince(e.g.Gravenhurstwith30.3oCand Kapuskasingwith29.7oCbothonthe5th).The finalweekwasthecoolestofthemonth(apart from in the Far North); Wiarton recorded a record-low temperature of -4.4°C on the 27th. Provincewideduringeachofthefirst3weeks, temperatures generally rose and then fell, remainingmostlyabovenormalandshowinga coherent trend across the regions. Precipitationforthemonthwasmostly nearnormalordrierthannormal.Nearnormal amounts were observed for most of the Far North,muchofsouthernOntarioandsouthern parts of the northeast (white areas on the map below). Remembrance Day was "fittingly and solemnly"observedbyveteransofWorldWarI andWorldWarII,aswellascitizensofChapleau in1950,accordingtotheChapleauPost.

Thenewspaperreportedthatattendance attheserviceintheTownHall,followedbythe laying of wreaths and poppies at the cenotaph, whichatthetimewaslocatedbesideit,wasthe largestinmanyyears.Italsomarkedthelargest attendancebyveteransonrecord.

WorldWar I andWorldWar II veterans paradedfromtheRoyalCanadianLegionHallto the Town Hall. The auditorium was filled to capacityfortheserviceconductedbyRev H.W Strapp, Minister at Trinity United Church and Rev E Roy Haddon, Rector of St John's AnglicanChurch,.

Mr Haddon, who had served in the BritishArmy in World War II was the padre to Branch Number 5 (Ontario) of the Royal CanadianLegion.

In his remarks, Mr. Haddon said that although one day a year is set aside for

Remembrance Day, "the sacrifices made for freedomwillalwaysberememberedeveryday."

Headdedthattheprinciplesforwhichso many gave their lives in both wars to ensure "freedom of speech and worship were not boughtcheaplyandthatshouldberemembered eachtimewelookatthecenotaphthememorial tothosewhoboughtfreedomforus."

In WorldWar II, from 1939 to 1945, our research identified 416 who enlisted, with a Chapleau connection -- at least 30 were women.Therewere 29 Chapleau boys, either killed in actionordieddueto w a r - r e l a t e d causes.)

community, Chapleau made a significant contribution to the country's armed forces in bothwars.

Following the service in theTown Hall, everyonemovedoutsidetothecenotaphforthe laying of wreaths and poppies. Each veteran paid tribute their fallen comrades by placing a poppyandsalutinginfrontofthecenotaph.

OnWednesday,September17,2025,theEast Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received multiple reports of break and enters (B&Es) in the Peshu Lake and Aubrey Falls areas within Root Township This area is located approximately 117 kilometres north of Thessalon and is accessible via PeshuLakeRoadoffHighway129.

Sometime between Thursday, September 4, 2025, and Monday, October 13, 2025, five seasonal traveltrailerswerebrokeninto Theculpritsappeared tobecarefulwhencommittingthecrimes,leavingthe trailers looking normal in order to avoid drawing attention after the break-ins Point of entry were throughscreenedwindowsandsomedoorswerepried open,togainaccesstotheinteriors Itemsstolenfromthesetrailersinclude:

Mr Strapp were speakers, and were joined by Reeve B.W 'Bubs' Zufelt, of the Township of Chapleau.

At the time the Legion Hall was still officially owned by the municipality, but working with Mr. Zufelt, by 1955, ownership was transferred to Branch Number 5. For his efforts, Mr. Zufelt was honoured with a Life MembershipintheLegion.

In 1950. D.T. 'Toddy' Collinson, a veteranofWorldWarI,waspresidentofBranch Number 5. His father, George Collinson, a veteran ofWorldWar I, was a charter member ofthebranch.

Mrs.Agnes Freeborn, was president of the Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband, Earle Freeborn.servedinWorldWarI,andwasalsoa reeveofChapleau.
