The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities(FONOM)andtheNorthwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) are expressing their sincere appreciation to the GovernmentofCanada,PremierDougFord,and the Province of Ontario for their coordinated efforts to keep the Kapuskasing Paper facility operating.

Thisjointsupportprovidesmuch-needed stability to families, workers, and businesses across Northeastern Ontario. Armand Ruffo and Liz Howard, both fromChapleau,havebeenselected asfinalistsin different categories in the 2015 Governor General's Literary Awards, to be announced on October28.

Armand and Liz are from a small rural communityandhavebothbeennominatedinthe same year for a very prestigious literary award. Beforegoinganyfurther,ahuge"WOW"toboth ofyou,andcongratulations.

TheCanadaCouncilfortheArts explains thattheGovernorGeneral’sLiteraryAwardsare givenannuallytothebestEnglish-languageand the best French-language book in each of the sevencategoriesofFiction,LiteraryNon-fiction, Poetry, Drama, Children’s Literature (text), Children’s Literature (illustrated books) and Translation(fromFrenchtoEnglish).

Armand has been nominated in the non fiction category for his book Norval Morisseau: Man Changing into Thunderbird while Liz is a finalistinthepoetry section for Infinite Citizen of the ShakingTent.

Andrew Carroll, editor of the Queen's GazettewrotethatArmand,theQueen’sNational Scholar in Indigenous Languages and Literatures, is in the running for a Governor General's Literary Award in the non-fiction category for his work Norval Morrisseau: Man Changing into Thunderbird, a biography of the innovativeandcontroversialOjibwaypainter.

Mr. Carroll noted that Armand, who teaches in the Department of English Language and Literature and Department of Drama, was surprised by the nomination and considers it an honourtobeincludedamong“suchfinewriters.”

“NorvalMorrisseau:ManChangingInto Thunderbird took numerous years to write becauseofthehugeamountofprimaryresearch that I had to do, and the way that I wanted to integrate this material into a compelling narrative, and so it is wonderful to hear that the book maynotsimplyfallintotheproverbial‘bigblack hole’anddisappearquicklyfromsight,”hesays. “Ultimately, it’s the writing that matters, and I

think the nomination should help the book come to the attention of potential readers, and for awriter–atleastfor me – this is the best thing about the nomination.”

Armand previously taught at Carleton University in Ottawa. He has Master's degree in literature and creative writing from the University ofWindsor and an Honours degree in English from the UniversityofOttawa.

Regarding her background and family Liz said she was born in Timmins in 1985 and grew up in Chapleau on Monk Street and Highway129.

SatellitecompanybuildingnewinfrastructureinTimmins Prep work underway on new Telesat landing station

Site work is underway on satellite infrastructure inTimmins that’s expected to improve telecommunicationsinruralandremotecommunitiesinNorthernOntario.

On Oct. 16, Ottawa-based satellite operator Telesat and Timmins Economic Development announced the construction of the company’s new landing station, located on Laforest Road in a rural area of the community locatednorthofthecityproper.

“Timmins offers access to superior telecommunications infrastructure, including an extensive 2,200-kilometre long-haul fibre network,highlyreliablehydroelectricinfrastructure, and access to a multitude of energy solutions,”AsitTandon,Telesat’s chief network and informationofficer,saidinanewsrelease.

“Thesefeatures,pluseasyaccessibilityto southern Ontario and western Quebec, make Timmins an ideal location to meet the stringent resiliencyrequirementsforourterrestriallanding stationnetwork.Weappreciatetheprofessionalism and responsiveness of Timmins Economic Developmentthroughoutourengagement.”

According to the release, the landing stationwillconnectdatafromTelesat’sadvanced low-orbit earth (LEO) satellite network,Telesat Lightspeed, to terrestrial and points of presence

and fibre in Northern Ontario.

In addition to boosting telecom networks in rural and remotecommunities,the new infrastructure is expected to provide broadband connectivity for the energy, mining, aviation and maritime industries.

Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau welcomed the development.

“Timmins is proud to play a role in advancing Canada’s largest space program. Telesat’s investment highlightsthestrengthof ourcity’sinfrastructureandourpositionasahub for innovation in Northern Ontario,” she said in therelease.

“By anchoring the Telesat Lightspeed network here, Timmins is helping to connect remote and rural communities, while also contributing to Canada’s growing new space econ-

omy. This project represents new opportunities for our community and reinforces that Timmins isonthemap,notjustinOntario,butonaglobal scale.”

Crews have begun clearing the land, according to the release, and construction of satelliteantennasandnetworkingequipmentwill startinthespring.
