“It has been about eight years when I came to the Y looking for a program to keep my two daughters (7 and 12 years old at the time) to be distracted from the ongoing domestic violence we were experiencing. I was so grateful that Kate Bucey was very compassionate and listened to our needs. She extended free membership to swimming lessons for Juliana and Leticia They both learned how to swim with the help of those great instructors at the time. Juliana is a 14-year-old skilled swimmer. The Dolphins team summer program helped her deal and work on her self-esteem and confidence. She is overcoming her mental health issues little by little. Leticia is 20 now -- an independent young adult. She also has the skills to be in the water safely. I said to her when she was in that swim lesson: “you just have to leave the fear ofgoing underwater here where you’re standing, and jump!” The instructor was so patient, and we were so happy to see her believing those words and putting them into action! My three children struggle with emotional battles, but your programs have been helping us greatly to reduce the stress in our lives to this day!”
