Annual Impact Report 2024 - 2025 || Channel Islands YMCA

Page 1

Being a young adult and finding a community and safe place to work on yourself can be difficult. But coming to the YMCA I’ve found that safe, non-judgmental, and understanding place to workout, and be confident. The YMCA has impacted my experience of working on myself in a much more positive experience.”

WORDS FROM LEADERSHIP

Dear YMCA Family and Friends,

At the end of every year, we have the privilege of celebrating with you the lives we have touched, the partnerships we have built, and the inspiring stories that remind us why this work matters.

In 2024-2025 we served more people than ever before in our facilities, childcare, and community programs. With the help of our volunteers, we raised a record-breaking $3 million. Those funds provided thousands of membership and childcare scholarships, funded crucial community programs like LIVESTRONG, and allowed us to continue investing in the future of communities across the Central Coast.

Youth & Family Services (YFS) team also opened the Lyons House, a Transitional Housing Placement Program that strengthens our continuum of care by offering 18 to 21-year-olds stability, hope, and a clear path toward independence. Alongside the Haley Street Navigation Center, Noah’s Anchorage Crisis Shelter, and My Home, our YFS programs supported more than 450 youth over the past year.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without our volunteers, the true heart of our movement. From hands-on program support to serving on our boards, volunteers contributed more than 12,000 hours of service this year, exemplifying the YMCA spirit of community and shared responsibility.

We are honored that you continue to trust the Channel Islands YMCAs with your families, your health, your time, and your generous donations. Within this annual report, you will find stories of lives transformed, milestones achieved, and a vision for a bright future ahead. We invite you to read, be inspired, and continue walking with us on this journey, because every day, together, we are building a stronger, healthier, and more hopeful tomorrow.

Sincerely, Margo and Dan

STRATEGIC VISION

This year, the Channel Islands YMCA updated our Strategic Plan, our roadmap for ensuring that we continue to meet the changing needs of our communities for years to come. We’d like to thank our Board of Directors and branch Boards of Managers, staff, and community leaders and partners, for their thoughtful input during this process.

A HEALTHY, CONNECTED COMMUNITY FOR

EVERYONE

The YMCA builds a stronger, healthier, and more welcoming community for all.

We are committed to growing our impact by leveraging partnerships, programs, services, and spaces to meet the needs of those in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties.

FUN FOR ALL

ADAPTIVE AND INCLUSIVE PROGRAMS AT THE Y

261 people with diverse abilities utilized our facilities this year through memberships paid for by partnership with the Tri-Counties Regional Center. At the Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura Ys dedicated adaptive and inclusive programs create space for youth and adults to build life skills, play sports, and make friends. Here are two of those stories:

The YMCA has been a life-changing part of our journey as a special needs family. It’s more than just a facility—it’s a community that embraces our children for who they are and helps them grow in ways we never imagined. One of the most meaningful experiences has been the adaptive cooking class, where our child has gained not only practical life skills but also a huge boost in confidence. Learning to follow recipes, handle kitchen tools safely, and even share meals with others has been incredibly empowering. We’ve seen them take pride in their independence and carry that confidence into other areas of life.

In addition to cooking, both of my children have participated in swim lessons, inclusive sports (basketball, yoga, and martial arts), and childwatch (both at the Y and also the school aftercare). All of these have helped improve motor skills, teamwork, and social interaction. When we first joined, my kids were shy and uncertain—but now, they walk into the Y with excitement and purpose. The staff’s kindness, patience, and dedication have made all the difference. The YMCA has given our child a place to belong, grow, and thrive, and we are endlessly grateful for the opportunities it continues to provide for our entire family.”

Our son Gavin is a happy 12 year old boy that likely is home playing his video games because he never really ‘fits in’ or has ‘friends’ that he can hang out with. We have done many sports with other companies and tried everything to get him engaged in activity. Aside from loving the water Gavin loves to play baseball, soccer and now basketball thanks to coach Linda and the YMCA.

Having adaptive programs for our kids is something nobody understands except us special needs families. It is a community not only for our child but for parents to meet like minded families and make new friends. The growth and happiness I have seen on our son’s face in just a few short weeks of trying basketball is something that will make a mother cry. He loves getting up and going to see ‘his friends’ as he says on Sunday mornings. He chants Coach Linda and Coach Anthony and Jay all the way there. He smiles, he trys and most of all he has a blast doing it. One hour of physical activity, plus the emotional support and growth he gets, is all we could dream of for our son.

Thank you for making this program possible. We look forward to more opportunities in his future.“

191 youth of diverse abilities participated in adaptive and inclusive programming at the Y.

STORIES FROM THE Y / / / Learn to Swim

Learn to Swim is a free YMCA program that teaches water safety and swim skills to kids who might not otherwise have access to lessons. Instructors use fun, engaging games like ‘Chicken, Airplane, Rocket’ — where kids strike silly poses to learn the arm movements of the backstroke. They also practice essential water safety skills, such as how to rescue a friend with a pool noodle, exit the pool safely, and float in the water.

1,458 kids received free swim lessons at the Y.

It has been a wonderful place for my daughter and I to exercise and make new friends. My daughter is swimming on the swim team and really enjoys the social aspect of the team as well as the competitions. I’ve been enjoying group exercise classes and also swim laps multiple times a week. It has been a great accessible way for us to stay active!”

PROGRAM UPDATES / / / Childcare

1,980 Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade students spent before and afterschool at 37 Y school sites during the 2024-2025 school year. More than half of those students attended a program subsidized through the ELOP or ASES programs or received financial aid available because of the generous contributions of YMCA donors. After school programming provides a safe place for kids to spend the afternoon, fuels curiosity and creativity, and keeps young minds and bodies active after the school day ends.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT:

SCALED Learning

PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT: Transitions Mental Health Association

Before and Afterschool Programs for school-age children follow SCALED Learning™, a groundbreaking curriculum that complements in school learning and combines academic support with social connection.

Developmentally appropriate activities are built around the six pillars of SCALED learning: STEM, career-connected learning, arts, literacy, education, and diversity and global learning.

Children in YMCA Afterschool programs enjoy healthy snacks, get help with homework, and participate in learning activities that fuel academic achievement, nurture curiosity, and shape globally minded, resilient young people who are ready to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

In 2021, the San Luis Obispo County YMCA launched an ambitious partnership with Transitions Mental Health Association (TMHA), a non-profit that provides services for people with mental illness in San Luis Obispo and North Santa Barbara Counties. Understanding that challenging behaviors are often caused by unmet mental health needs and believing that all children benefit from out-of-school time programs, staff at the Y and TMHA developed a program to provide direct support to childcare participants and training to the Y’s childcare staff. Graduate students in social work, under the supervision of a licensed clinical social worker, earn clinical hours toward their own licensing requirements by providing direct support at the Y’s school sites, and ongoing training for all childcare supervisors. In 2024-2025 approximately ten hours per week of direct support were provided at six school sites, and all ten site supervisors participated in ongoing training.

The Y has created stability to me and my children. It has had such a positive impact that I would never want my children to attend any other after-school or school break program. The Paso Robles staff are extremely AMAZING! Thank you for existing and for your support to families like mine! “

My child was nervous to try out a new place and really didn’t want to go at first, but the environment was so welcoming that it’s her favorite part of the day now.”

SUCCESSFUL STANDOUTS / / / The Lyons House

Tucked in a quiet Santa Barbara neighborhood, the Lyons House, a licensed Transitional Housing Placement Program, provides a comfortable home and the support to transition to independent living to up to nine young adults exiting foster care.

The fully furnished Lyons House is stocked with nutritious foods and essentials, and clinical staff provide counseling and intensive case management services. Two live-in Resident Assistants offer additional support and organize outings, activities, and family-style meals.

This summer the house welcomed Jordan (name changed for privacy), a bright and motivated 18-year-old who recently earned her high school diploma. With dreams of becoming a barber, Jordan is preparing to enroll in the cosmetology program at Santa Barbara City College.

She spends her free time listening to music, drawing, working out, playing basketball, and exploring the neighborhood. Jordan especially enjoys Taco Tuesdays, a family meal tradition she looks forward to sharing with new roommates as the house fills up.

Made possible by the generosity of philanthropist Steve Lyons, the Lyons House is the first Transitional Housing Placement Program in Santa Barbara County.

This house is very welcoming. The people here want to get to know you. They want to help you and they see you for the person you are. I love everyone in this house. I feel I have a new sense of maturity and wings that I didn’t have before.”

Alicia, Resident at the Lyons House

YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES YMCA

In 2023 the Lompoc community, led by city leaders, the school district, and the YMCA, created the YMCA Teen Activity Program, a free afterschool program at the Lompoc Family YMCA.

Every day after school, the Lompoc Y offers academic support and activities designed just for teens: regular fitness, creative art, and cooking classes, and everything from ukelele workshops to 3 on 3 basketball tournaments. This year over 1,000 teens participated in the Lompoc Teen Program.

According to Teen Activity Program Participant Ethan, the Lompoc Family YMCA is a great and safe space to come after school with friends. The YMCA is one of the few places he can spend meaningful time with his friends. Ethan said, “We only see each other for an hour [at school], because we don’t usually have classes together, but here at the gym or the Y, we can hang out, talk, lift weights, basically bond.”

The Teen Activity Program gives teens a fun and safe place to spend their after-school hours and serves as a launchpad for leadership, confidence, and personal growth.

SUCCESSFUL STANDOUTS / / / Teen Activity Program

1,005 teens spend their after school hours in the Lompoc Family YMCA’s teen program.

Whatever they come in is whatever we accept them as. We do our best to try to uplift them as they need, be an ear as needed, or just be a support system.”
