The Channel Islands YMCA is a charitable organization providing programs based upon Christian principles to men, women and children of all ages, races, religious beliefs and economic status to develop and enrich the spirit, mind and body. “The Y gives me and my wife an opportunity to maintain our health while also providing programs we can share with our children, grandchildren and friends. We believe in the Y mission and the potential it has to improve our community’s health. -Y Member Each photo used in this report is of actual members impacted by the work of the Channel Islands YMCA.

Dear YMCA Family and Friends, As we look back across the span of our 2017-18 fiscal year, it’s amazing to see the resilience, the innovation, and the commitment to the mission that our staff and volunteers have displayed. The launch of Nationwide Membership in October 2017 gave members the flexibility to access participating Y facilities near a workplace or when traveling throughout the United States at no extra charge. This is a huge win for the Y as a movement. The most poignant of the events of the year was the disaster that was sparked by the December 4 Thomas Fire. The loss of life and property in our service areas was devastating. Each branch was affected by smoke and closures, and the Montecito Y was closed for 6 weeks due to the evacuation. In spite of the environmental threats and great sadness many staff, volunteers and members where facing, our facilities were virtually untouched and our YMCA’s sought to support their communities’ needs. We offered free showers, outlets to charge phones, free necessities, a place of respite, and free child care for those affected by the disasters. Some classes relocated to neighboring Ys and to other locations of convenience for members. The staff and board developed plans for how they could best serve the community in the aftermath of these tragedies including stress management and emergency preparedness workshops, as well as branch events to bring the community together as the healing process began.

Robert J. Coles, Board Chair

In January 2018, Noah’s Anchorage celebrated their 25th anniversary. Noah’s Anchorage continues to have tremendous impact on the lives of young people. In the spring, management staff and volunteers began the visionary work necessary to lay out the next three-year strategic plan. The plan culminated in detailed approaches to the future that include building community relationships, deepening development efforts, further engaging staff and members, and an ongoing intentionality toward diversity. Fiscally we remained fit, even in the face of the continued fiscal impact of minimum wage increases and grant funding decline, particularly for our Youth and Family Services YMCA. As we successfully navigate these challenges, we are especially heartened this year by receiving more than a million dollars from individuals who left legacy gifts for our endowment. This commitment to the Y will preserve in perpetuity our ability to serve our mission. The Heritage Club honors the generosity of people who have made a planned gift to the Y and we are fortunate to receive those contributions from their estate plans each year. We thank these Heritage Club members, Mr. Jack Dimock and Mrs. Helen Mussbach, for their foresight and generosity. Thank you to our staff, donors and volunteers for their commitment to improve the lives of those in our communities. Sincerely, Robert and Sal

Sal Cisneros, President and CEO
