ONE YEAR ONE MISSION WE ARE ONE 2016 - 17 ANNUAL REPORT CHANNEL ISLANDS YMCA

The Channel Islands YMCA is a charitable organization providing programs based upon Christian principles to men, women and children of all ages, races, religious beliefs and economic status to develop and enrich the spirit, mind and body. “The YMCA offers programs to many different types of people with many different needs. The services I see provided, such as health/wellness education, swim instruction, and employment opportunities are unprecedented in the community... - Y Member

Dear YMCA Family and Friends, The Y’s impact each year continues to expand, reaching more families and changing lives. As parents across Santa Barbara and Ventura counties worked to support their families, the Y worked to lend a hand by providing enriching programs for all ages. From safe afterschool childcare, to summer camp experiences, Y programs help children grow socially and physically. At the Y, we are focused on supporting families as a means to building stronger communities. This year we provided childcare to over 1650 children at 22 childcare sites and two preschools. Our two Sleepaway Camps at Camp Lake Sequoia and Camp Fox hosted 378 children for a life-changing week of outdoor adventure. In addition to camp and child care, our aquatic programs also had a positive impact on over 9,700 children! Swimming is a vital skill in a region with water so easily accessible, we proudly provide lessons for people of all ages at the Y. Over and above our regular sessions of life-saving swim lessons, our dedicated swim instructors taught 438 third graders to swim – at no cost to the schools or the parents. Children that otherwise may not have ever had a chance to learn water safety skills.

Robert J. Coles, Board Chair

A member shared this with us: “The YMCA offers programs to many different types of people with many different needs. The services I see provided, such as health/wellness education, swim instruction, and employment opportunities are unprecedented in the community. This YMCA goes above and beyond to make all people feel welcome regardless of age, abilities, or financial status. And, the staff are the most welcoming, caring people. It is certainly a special place and a rare gem of inclusivity and personal attention in the community.” New this year, our members now benefit from access to Ys across the nation. In collaboration with YMCA of the USA, The Channel Islands Y played an integral role to ensure members will be able to visit Ys across the US with their local membership. They will be able to experience the same care and attention they appreciate right here at home. As we continue to grow and seek new ways to strengthen our communities, we give thanks to all of our volunteers, donors and staff for their continued generosity and dedication. Robert and Sal

“I love the Y’s diversity. I love how my child would come home and tell me about the different perspectives and experience that the Counselors had shared about their lives with him. It showed me that the counselors were taking the time to really relate to the children on a personal level, and not just mechanically going about their jobs. - Y Member

Crisis calls were received at Noah’s Anchorage helping to facilitate crisis management for individuals and families.

During the year, 153 families received counseling services at Noah’s Anchorage. Trusted services were offered 24 hours a day/365 days a year at no cost to individuals and families in need. Our trained staff provided a safe space for crisis intervention, temporary shelter, community referrals, and offered basic needs to at-risk youths.

“I have been able to keep my membership because it is at a reduced rate based on my income. It warms my heart to see some of the same people - we check in with each other and are genuinely concerned about what is happening in each other’s lives. I think the Y promotes this!” -Y Member
