June is bringing exciting event opportunities for all members alike. Entrepreneurs at all levels can participate in a scaling and pitch contest as a part of the Chandler Endeavor: Embark, entrepreneurial program, on June 7th. Those interested in networking can join us for our morning networking event, Wake Up Chandler, on Wednesday, June 7th or for our evening networking event on June 22nd, Business After Business. For anyone interested in public policy, we will be providing valuable information and insights on the recent updates and developments taking place in Maricopa at our Policy Impact Series on June 9th. We will cover a range of topics including economic growth, new businesses, infrastructure development, and community projects. And, keep in mind

that our How We Stand Policy Round Tables are taking place this month. All Chandler Chamber business members are invited to attend these discussions to provide feedback and input on the development of the Chamber’s How We Stand Legislative document. This book outlines the 2024 policy priorities that are used by the Chamber and elected officials as we advocate for our business members.

If you want to be inspired by leaders in our community, this month’s Women in Leadership event on June 20th will feature the 2023 City Lifestyle Magazine’s Men of Chandler. Join us as we hear from these individuals that have made a positive impact in our community.

The Chamber offers an event for everyone so June is the month to get involved and propel your business forward!

FROM THE MAYOR

Chandler has been a well-run, business-friendly city since its inception back in the early 1900s. Over the years, leaders before us have made smart, fiscally sound decisions and developed strategic plans that looked far into the future. I’m proud to say that tradition continues today.

Last month, the City Council and I approved the Strategic Framework for 2023-2025. This plan reflects community needs, providing a clear roadmap to ensure Chandler is always moving forward. This is the third iteration of the plan – the Council looks at it every two years and modifies it as needed. This year, we landed on six focus areas:

CHAMBER NON-PROFITSPOTLIGHT

Feed the Children

Feed the Children is a leading anti-hunger non-profit organization delivering food and other critical resources to children and families. Our mission is to provide hope and resources for those without life’s essentials In our day-to-day lives, hunger is often hard to see, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Sadly, both in the United States and around the world, hunger is everywhere.

With the increased hardship children and families have faced since the outbreak of COVID-19, in 2021 it was estimated that as many as 1 in 6 children in the U.S. was food insecure — meaning that they didn’t always know how they would get their next meal.

JOB FAIR

Community Safety, Connectivity, Economic Vitality, Neighborhoods, Quality of Life and Sustainability and Technology.

Let’s start with Community Safety.

Chandler is recognized as one of the safest cities in the nation and we intend to keep it that way. This focus area includes proactively maintaining police and fire infrastructure, investing in people and technology, and developing strong partnerships with experts to address behavioral health and homelessness.

Connectivity refers to the City’s ability to connect people through streets, transit services, bike and shared-use paths, Chandler Municipal Airport and technology and communications systems.

Economic Vitality encompasses the preservation of our employment corridors, targeted use of adaptive reuse projects, maintaining high development standards, and building more partnerships for higher education and workforce development

JOB FAIR

opportunities within Chandler. The Neighborhoods focus area includes improvement projects, infrastructure, recognition of historic cultural assets and activities to promote volunteerism and pride in ownership.

Quality of Life focuses on city parks, open spaces, arts, culture, literacy, entertainment and recreation opportunities that enhance our Chandler lifestyle. And of course, a Community of Innovation must stay focused on Sustainability and Technology, which covers water infrastructure and conservation, urban forestry, sustainable building development, and pursuing smart energy solutions.

I’m so grateful for the hard work put into the Strategic Framework by the Council and staff. I have no doubt that it will keep Chandler strong and attractive for new businesses for years to come. Read the plan at chandleraz.gov/ strategicframework.

TERRI KIMBLE NAMED A

"LOCAL HERO"

ONE Community, the coalition of socially responsible businesses, organizations and individuals working to advance diversity, equity, equality and inclusion for all Arizonans, is proud to announce the 2023 Honorees, which include recipients of the Common Good Award, the Local Hero Awards, and the Unity Agent Honor.

This year’s Local Heroes Honorees represents a diverse group of individuals, from various backgrounds; however, what they have all demonstrated is their dedication to ensuring Arizona is a place that celebrates, respects, and protects all who live and work in our great state. One of the Local Hero Awardees includes Terri Kimble, President & CEO, of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. She was recognized based on her efforts to push for the passing of the non-discrimination ordinance in Chandler. Other award winners include Sarah Krahenbuhl, Jennie Patel, Paul Rockower, Gabe Hagen, and Jesse Shank.

Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) will be recognized as the recipient of the Common Good Award. She was instrumental in introducing and passing the landmark Respect for Marriage Act in 2022. The Unity Agent honor is awarded to Lynette Braddock, an Arizona mom who has advocated tirelessly on behalf of her daughter Chloe, who is an incredible transgender young woman in her second year of law school.

Additionally, ONE Community will be highlighting past collaborative efforts that led to the passage of ten municipal ordinances that updated or created non-discrimination policies over the past ten years: Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Sedona, Winslow, Flagstaff, Scottsdale, Glendale, Tolleson and Chandler.

“Every one of our esteemed honorees have their own unique story of how they have positively impacted and contributed to our community and how they work together to promote diversity and inclusion measures that are critical to our collective success,” said Angela Hughey, President, and Co-Founder of ONE Community and ONE Community Foundation.

This year’s Spotlight event is particularly meaningful, as it is also the ten-year anniversary of the UNITY Pledge, which is now the largest equality pledge in the nation! The UNITY Pledge is a concerted effort by Arizona businesses, organizations, and individuals to advance workplace equality and equal treatment in housing, workforce, and public accommodations. To date, over 3,500 businesses and 20,000 individuals have proudly signed the pledge, supporting an update to Arizona’s non-discrimination laws.

Terri and all honorees will be celebrated on Friday October 13th, 2023 at the Sheraton Grand Phoenix.

Take a Few Minutes to Make a Difference

During the month of June, we celebrate, recognize and commemorate the contributions and history of LGBTQ+ people.

The Chandler Chamber of Commerce is an inclusive organization and we are proud to have signed the ONE Community UNITY Pledge, a concerted effort by Arizona businesses and individuals to advance workplace equality and equal treatment in housing and public accommodations for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ) individuals and their allies. The UNITY Pledge, which is now the largest equality pledge in the nation with more than 3,500 businesses and over 20,000 individuals signing!

In honor of both LGBTQ+ Pride Month and the 10year anniversary of the UNITY Pledge, we will be participating in a friendly competition with other member-based organizations to see who can get the most signers - and yes, if you have taken the pledge you can re-sign!

We encourage you to join us in signing the pledge today using our link here: https:// onecommunity.online/ChandlerChamber. It literally takes one minute to sign! Signing the UNITY Pledge is a great way to show your commitment to an Arizona that celebrates, respects and protects us all!

Prepare Your Child for their Financial Future

Budgeting and learning how to manage money is a skill that adults use on a daily basis so it is important to teach children and teens good spending habits. First Credit Union has a solution to this! Mad City Money is a way for teens to learn the importance of budgeting - all while having FUN! This immersive financial education experience is designed for junior high and high school students and it's free! Each teen receives a future identity complete with an occupation, salary, kids, and perhaps some debt. Students then make decisions about housing, transportation, food, and more. Just like adults!

Before leaving Mad City Money the teens discuss and review what they learned about budgeting. Did everyone stick to their spending plan? What choices put them over budget?

Mad City Money will be held at the First Credit Union Chandler Corporate Plaza (25 S Arizona Place, Chandler, AZ 85225) on Thursday June 22 from 10:00 am to 12:30 m and lunch will be provided. HOW WE STAND Business Roundtables

Make your voice heard. Advocate for your business. Join the Chandler Chamber as we offer our members and stakeholders the opportunity to take part in shaping our public policy agenda for 2024. We hold annual round-table discussions with industry leaders, members and public officials on particular issues such as education, energy, utilities, and transportation among others, and meticulously go over every bullet point for relevance, reform, validity and discussion. This process employs an in-house lobbyist to ensure that our legislators know where we stand on these crucial issues in the business community.

The Chamber then creates our award winning document, How We Stand Legislative Agenda, that represents the collective will of our members.

Register at chandlerchamber.com and we look forward to discussing how we can better advocate for the Chandler business community.

On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared “that all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free.”

Juneteenth honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The name “Juneteenth” is a blend of two words: “June” and “nineteenth.” It’s believed to be the oldest AfricanAmerican holiday, with annual celebrations on June 19th in different parts of the country dating back to 1866. Moreover, it is also a celebration of AfricanAmerican culture.

The state of Texas was one of the last holdouts of the south

to free slaves. It wasn’t until two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed that slaves were informed they were free. Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and

The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves the absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.

announced, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This

involves the absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.” With General Granger’s announcement, June 19th became known as Juneteenth.

This year marks a major milestone for the celebration of Juneteenth. President Biden signed a bill into law that officially designates Juneteenth as an American holiday to be observed annually on June 19th. Juneteenth celebrations include activities such as church services, public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, rodeos, food, dancing, storytelling, and fellowship.
