PETITION LAUNCHED TO SCRAP PLANNED MARKET CHANGES Report by Kenny Parker

A BUSINESSMAN who describes himself as “normally shy and retiring” donned Victorian gentleman-style garb to launch a campaign aimed at averting proposed changes to Ormskirk market which he claims will lead to its slow death. Graham Gilbert hoped his unusual attire would help to draw attention as he collected around 400 signatures at the market on Saturday (January 18) for a petition calling on West Lancs Council to abandon the changes. From April, the local authority will no longer provide stalls for traders setting up at the town’s historic Thursday and Saturday market. The council says the changes, proposed last summer, will save it about £84,000 per year and claims they were arrived at in agreement with the traders who will receive free rent between January and March in return However, Graham disputes that the majority of traders are happy with the changes and says he plans to submit his petition to the full council meeting on Wednesday, February 26. Copies of the petition are also in place at various town-centre shops. He said: “Before starting this campaign I did a scrupulously impartial survey of all the stall holders - without prompting them either way - and exactly 70% of them said these changes will lead to the slow death of Ormskirk market.

Businessman claims council proposals will lead to a ‘slow death’ for town’s iconic attraction

“This gives lie to the official line from the council that the proposals are being introduced with the support of existing market traders. “This is a cost-cutting measure too far - these stalls are Ormskirk’s crown jewels.

“I have also now found most visitors to the market had no idea this was about to happen and they were appalled - as the petition numbers show.” He also said that he had received “massive support” from town-centre shops concerned about any reduction in footfall that changes to the market might bring Now Graham, who runs a business selling properties in France as well as caring for his elderly mother, is hoping that others will join in to help him with the campaign. “I’m stretched beyond belief but I’ve got to know I’ve done my absolute maximum to stop the council from making a monumental mistake “And if this is what one man can do in one day what would it be like if I had some helpers?” Anyone interested in helping in any way - such as collecting signatures; help with photocopying costs; or offering dry premises for people to sign the petition on a rainy day - can contact Graham by email at grahamgilbert@freeeuk.com or by ringing 07914 899588. You can also join him at the Love to Eat café in Burscough Street from 2pm on Sundays, January 26 and February 2. West Lancs Council has been asked to comment on Graham’s campaign.

Victim Alex Davies

Parbold Hill murder accused named

THE teenager accused of the murder of 18-year-old Alex Davies from Skelmersdale has been named as Brian Healless from Chorley. Alex’s body was found in a wooded area of Parbold Hill on May 1 last year. A post-mortem examination declared the cause of death to be stab wounds and asphyxiation. A few days later Healless, who was 17 at the time, was arrested and charged with murder. He could not be identified at earlier hearings due to a court order because of his age, but has since turned 18. Judge Mark Brown, Recorder of Preston, revoked an order banning the press from naming the defendant during a brief hearing, at which Healless was not present, at Preston Crown Court. Healless, who has pleaded not guilty to murder and possession of a bladed article, is due to stand trial on Wednesday, March 11.
