INSIDE THIS WEEK: Autism friendly screenings to return at Plaza AFTER a long break, Plaza Cinema will resume its regular autism friendly screenings. The re-launch will take place on Monday, October 18 at 5.30pm, with a special showing of The Addams Family 2. The specialist screenings take place once a month on Monday evenings. Aimed primarily at families, so siblings get the chance to see the latest film releases, the screenings are open to anyone who would benefit from this type of event. The screenings take place in screen 1, the largest cinema. It is a totally self-contained space and allows the young people to move around or play in a completely safe environment, without disturbing the screen view of anyone wanting to concentrate on the film. Many people on the autism spectrum have acute sensory awareness so they maintain a low level of lighting throughout the auditorium and play the film at a reduced volume. These events are supported by experienced staff. Christine Physick arts & education director at the Plaza said: “After all the disruption caused by the pandemic, it is so exciting to be back at the cinema and able to organise the specialist screenings again. “If you have been thinking about trying an Autism Friendly Screening, come and join us.” Alternatively, if you would like further information either email me on christine@plazacinema.org.uk or phone on 0151 928 1530.

WAR MEMORIAL ‘LEFT LIKE A BUILDING SITE’ Army veteran’s anger as delays to roadworks leave people unable to pay their respects Report by Tom Martin AN angry armed forces veteran claims the war memorial in Waterloo has been left “looking like a building site” for months due to delayed roadworks. Jack Colbert contacted the Champion about the state of the war memorial at the junction of Crosby Road North and Great George’s Road, which is known locally as ‘The Five Lamps’. Work is being carried out by Sefton Council, but this was paused several months ago and the war memorial has since been left sectioned off by metal fences. When contacted by the Champion, a spokesperson for the council blamed the delay on a ‘national supply shortage of brickwork contractors’, but added that the work will be completed in time for Remem- Army veteran Jack Colbert, inset, is angry at the state of the fenced off war memorial. brance Sunday on November 14.
