FAMILIES have been left furious after a Seaforth care home was forced to close following a suspected gas leak and their elderly residents who live there were moved to new homes, some as far away as West Lancashire.

One local family told the Champion that their 89year-old relative, who has dementia, has been relocated to another care home 13 miles away in Burscough.

Riverslie, on Crosby Road South, was at the centre of a suspected gas leak on Thursday, July 21 and all the pensioners had to be moved out.

As the home is still closed due to “environmental issues” and with no indication as to when it will reopen, the residents’ relocation could be permanent.

One of the residents, Lily Mitchell, who celebrates her 90th birthday on Thursday, August 4, has been moved to Burscough, which is a 40 minute drive from Riverslie.

Her granddaughter, Jen Bradshaw, told the Champion that Lily has dementia and is not coping well with being moved to a new home.

Jen said: “We just got a call out the blue at about 9.30pm to say there had been a gas leak and my nan was being moved to Burscough.

“My nan has lived in Seaforth all her life. The residents she lives with and the staff are all familiar to

her, which obviously helps with her dementia.

“My nan was quiet, barely ate and immobile until she went to Riverslea. Ever since she moved there she has really come out of her shell and the staff have worked wonders with her.

We use the English Longhorn cattle at Martin Mere as they are a hardy breed, they can stay outside in all weathers and don’t mind getting wet feet. They love the course grasses and often eat the thistles and rush before they eat any other grasses. The cows eat by wrapping their tongues around the grass and ripping it, so they aren’t selective and create an amazing mosaic of tussocks in our meadows. These tussocks provide nesting places for snipe, redshank and reed buntings.

Our cattle play an essential role in maintaining our habitat, so it remains suitable for the range of wildlife on our reserve. The short grasses in October attract the pinkfooted geese as they stop off on migration for a quick wash and a feed. Up to 46,000 can be seen munching in the fields!

The cows walk down into the scrapes and ditches poaching the ground, creating bare mud areas for waders to probe in the mud for insects. This bare ground provides space for new plants to grow.

Their diet is entirely organic with no chemicals and provides an additional food source as their faeces are full of insects. Look out for yellow wagtails and cattle egrets around the cows eating any insects they kick

Euro winning Lioness Alex ‘an inspiration to all youngsters’ ‘Hard work and dedication have made her one of the world’s best footballers’ SEFTON-born Lioness Alex Greenwood has been hailed an “inspiration” to young girls after she helped England win the Women’s Euro2022.

Greenwood, 28, who was born in Bootle, and honed her skills at Litherland Sports Park, was a second half substitute in the historic match at Wembley on Sunday when the Lionesses beat Germany 2-1 to win the tournament for the first time in their history.

In doing so, Greenwood and her teammates have won the hearts of the nation and firmly put the spotlight on women’s football.

The defender, who has made 66 caps for England and is one of the more senior players in the squad, has loved the sport since a young age and her school teachers remember fondly how she “used to run rings around the boys!”

Sefton Council’s cabinet member for Health & Wellbeing Cllr Ian Moncur said: “Alex’s sporting heroics will come as no surprise to her family, friends and young sporting stars back home in Sefton.

“Many will recognise Alex from her time training at our very own Litherland Sports Park, where she tirelessly honed the skill and commitment that saw her rocket to the very top of the women’s game.

Jen said there was a meeting held for families on Monday, July 25 and that “all the residents’ families backed up and supported the care home” but it has still not been able to reopen.

A spokesperson for the Sefton Partnership, which recently replaced the CCGs, said: “Several different agencies worked with Riverslie nursing and residential home to ensure that all residents received support to move to alternative care homes and continue to get the care they need.

“Residents have not moved back into the care home because of ongoing environmental issues.”

Riverslie is owned by Innocare Ltd, which also runs another care home in Sussex.

The Seaforth care home was rated as ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission in February this year.

The Champion has tried to contact Innocare for comment.

She was signed by Everton and was named FA Young Player of the Year at the age of 18.

After Everton were relegated at the end of the 2014 season, Greenwoodjoined Notts County on a two-year deal.

At the start of 2016, she joined Liverpool - where she played for two years – and was named in the FA Women’s Super League Team of the Year in 2015/16.

Moving to Manchester United in 2018,Greenwood captained the Red Devils as they won promotion to the WSL in their debut season as a team.

She then moved abroad and signed for Lyon, where she helped them secure a quadruple including fulfilling her dream of winning the Champions League.

She signed for Manchester City in 2020 - winning the FA Women’s Cup at the end of the 2019/20 season.

Greenwood is in a relationship with Sheffield United defender Jack O’Connell, who once played for Litherland Remyca during his early playing days.

Mayor backs charity helping families displaced from Ukraine MAGHULL Town Mayor Councillor Josh Burns is encouraging the town’s residents to contribute to the charity he is supporting this year which is the Crosby Ukrainian Centre.

The CUC is helping to raise money and support Ukrainian families who have moved to the Sefton area due to being displaced by the ongoing conflict in their country.

In particular he needs donations for his tombola at this year’s MaghullFest which is being held on KGV Playing Field on Saturday, August 13.

If anyone has anything suitable such as toiletries, confectioneries or unwanted gifts they would be gratefully received to be used as tombola prizes.

They can be dropped off at Maghull Town Hall between 9.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

The Mayor will be opening MaghullFest and then running his tombola at the MTC tent throughout the day.

Cllr Burns said: “I hope as many people as possible can come along to MaghullFest and enjoy the rides, music and activities the Council has organised.

“Whilst they are there please don’t forget to play the tombola and help raise money for people who are really in need.”

CBE for professor who helped global response to pandemic PROFESSOR Tom Solomon from Crosby has received his CBE from Princess Anne at a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace.

The University of Liverpool professor was included in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to Neurological and Emerging Infections Research, including during the coronavirus response.

Professor Solomon said: “I am truly honoured by this award, which reflects the tremendous support I have had from family and friends, plus the enormous efforts of a very large group of colleagues over many years.

“When I first started working on emerging infections in Asia 25 years ago, many people thought this was a rather esoteric and niche subject.

“But over the last two and a half years we have all seen the enormous impact such

infections can have, and how important an area this is.”

After joining the University in 1998 from the University of Oxford, Professor Solomon established the multi-disciplinary Liverpool Brain Infections Group and was appointed Chair of Neurological Science in 2007.

He was recently appointed Director of The Pandemic Institute.

Internationally renowned for his expertise in encephalitis (inflammation and swelling of the brain), Professor Solomon’s research into mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis was crucial to the success of World Health Organisation efforts to reduce the disease through vaccination in Asia.

As an advisor to the UK Government and WHO on emerging infections, he has played an important role in the response to Ebola, Zika and most recently Covid-19.

It means that, where appropriate, residents can go directly to their local pharmacy for expert treatment or medicines for a wide variety of conditions, without

The medicines are prescribed free of charge for anyone who does not pay for their prescriptions. Those who do pay will be charged the current prescription charge, or lower if they are cheaper to buy over the counter.

Amy Hewitt, who runs Design Studio94 on St John’s Road, had a request from Lioness goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis to fix her ‘lucky trousers’ before the big game on Sunday!

The shotstopper, from Burnley, needed the zip fixed within 24 hours before heading to London to face Germany in the final – and thankfully Amy was happy to help!

Rachel posted on Instagram on Saturday: “Lucky trousers all fixed up ready for the Lionesses’ game Sunday!”

Amy told the Champion: “She needed a new zip ASAP and for it to be fixed within 24 hours of heading off down to London for the final. A HOUSING firm is set to build 291 new homes on a swathe of land the size of 12 football pitches in Lydiate.

Bellway Homes North West has acquired over 24 acres of former farmland on Kenyons Lane in Lydiate and plans to create two and three bedroom semi detached homes, as well as three, four and five bedroom detached houses.

Planning consent has been granted, with Bellway starting remediation work on site in the autumn.

Jenny Bell, sales director at Bellway, says: “This latest land acquisition in Merseyside is great news for the company. It is a superb location and we will be building a good selection of two, three, four and five bedroom homes, catering for all budgets.”

In addition to the new residential development, Bellway has made several Section 106 contributions to the locality, including £471,852 to highways to be used to improve the Kenyons Lane and A59 junction, £166,452 to healthcare and

There will also be a 30% affordable housing provision.

With construction due to commence in the coming months, Bellway plans to release the first homes for sale in the winter and has scheduled 2023 for the opening of the show homes.

Arriva bus strike set to continue into third week THE Arriva bus strike shows no sign of ending as it enters its third week across Merseyside.

In an update provided by Arriva North West on Monday, August 1, they said a “generous pay rise” had been rejected by union reps from Unite and GMB. The exact figure was not given, but it is believed that the two unions have previously dismissed an 8.5% pay rise offer.

Strike action began on Wednesday, July 20 at 2am after 1,800 workers agreed to ‘walk out’ over a pay dispute. During each day of the industrial action there has been no Arriva bus service operating anywhere within Merseyside.

The strike is indefinite, meaning it will carry on until all parties reach an agreement on a pay rise for workers. The depots involved in the dispute include Bootle, Southport, Liverpool, Birkenhead, Bolton, Macclesfield, Manchester, Runcorn, Speke, St Helens and Winsford.

Could Dippy the dinosaur find new home in the Strand Shopping Centre?

A HUGE replica of a Diplodocus dinosaur skeleton could be placed in the Strand Shopping Centre!

Dippy, as he is affectionately known as, is currently based in the Natural History Museum in London, but Sefton Council has submitted an ambitious bid to host him for three years.

Shortlisting will take place at the start of August and Dippy, who is 70ft long, will move into his new home in January 2023.

If Sefton’s bid is successful, the diplodocus cast will relocate from London to the community space at the Strand in Bootle, where residents and visitors will be able to learn about climate change and biodiversity loss both worldwide and at a local level.

LETTERS to the Editor Re: Letter stating that the cemetery should be better maintained.

I totally agree with this.

As a regular visitor to Thornton cemetery the past ten years, I have been dismayed at the lack of care.

Grass is left to grow for months around graves and when it’s cut, it’s in a very haphazard manner.

I maintain and cut around my family stone, but the lack of care and attention from the groundsmen is upsetting.

I too have complained without any reply.

Hedgehogs need our help In the heat of summer our friendly neighbourhood hedgehogs need a bit of extra help and consideration.

So please consider putting out a bowl of water in your garden and remember to check under shrubs and borders thoroughly before operating mowing and strimming equipment.

Hedgehogs can swim but it's important to have an escape ramp in any ponds to ensure they can get out And of course, if you see a hedgehog out in the daytime do seek veterinary advice.

If we all do our bit to ensure our gardens remain hedgehog friendly, accessible and interconnected (so they can move around to find food, water, shelter, mates) and keep them hydrated in the summer, we may well be able to halt their declining numbers.

It’s their neighbourhood too so it’s the least we can do!

Seagull bags do work and are better than bins I read with some amusement the letter regarding introducing bins as a solution to the seagull problem.

I have stayed in Cornwall on numerous occasions and have used the seagull proof bags and yes they do work, the clue is in the name.

As someone who was involved in organising the opposition to the attempt by the council to impose individual or communal bins on residents I would like to re-iterate the following points:1) We do not have the space at the front of our houses for the bins and health and safety does not allow them to be placed in the alleyways.

2) There are no safe spaces for communal bins in our road particularly with regard to the high possibility of them being set on fire.

3) We do not want them, most residents in various roads off St John's Road voted

against them.

If the letter writer is upset by the litter from a few burst bags then she would soon be screaming at the overflow problem of the communal bins.

If she is so convinced that they are a good alternative she could always volunteer to have them sited outside her house.

I think it’s a pretty safe bet that the letter writer does not have to wrestle her bins down a back alleyway or walk the length of the street with her ‘unhygenic’ bin bags.

We, as householders, have made our choice very clear and I think the whole tone of her email bordered on the patronising.

If she is so impressed with the French alternative then she could always go and live in a very clean French town.

Drivers use road Keep up the like a racetrack good work!

I have written to this paper before about motorists speeding on Foxhouse Lane in Maghull.

I have complained to the council, the police and my MP. I pointed out that it was only a matter of time before there was a serious accident caused by people driving in excess of the 20mph speed limit and treating this residential road like a race track.

Well one recent Sunday morning the police were there, two fire engines and an ambulance to pick up a motorcyclist following a serious collision with a car.

I hate to say I have been proved right because someone has been hurt.

So will the authorities do something now? Please.

Council is ‘managing its budget effectively,’ according to peer review A PEER review has found that Sefton Council has successfully managed its budget “effectively” despite cutbacks and the impact of the pandemic.

Commissioned through the Local Government Association (LGA), the review was carried out by the Leader of Barnsley Council, the Chief Executive at London Councils, Cheshire East Council’s Executive Director for Place and a Programme Manager from the LGA. Clear sense of direction The review team found progress had been made against all the recommendations of a previous 2018 peer review, and that Sefton Council has “a clear sense of direction around commercialisation.”

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory, Compliance and Corporate Services said: “I welcome the positive feedback from the peer review teams and am pleased that after being Cllr Paulette Lappin forced to make more than £230m of savings over the past 10 years due to Government funding cuts and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the review team agreed the Council is managing its budget effectively.

“Among the review’s recommendations were that the council should ensure the refresh of its Vision for Sefton reflect key priorities such as improving Children’s Services.

“The review team also said that given how much change the world has seen over the past two years, Sefton Council should work with its partners to review the localities model.

“In its response, the council has pointed out a new Executive Director Children’s Social Care and Education and Assistant Director Safeguarding Review & Quality Assurance are now in post and that six new permanent Service Managers have been recruited in Children’s Social Care.

“Additionally, the frequency of Corporate Parenting Board and Overview and Scrutiny of Children’s Services and Safeguarding onto which the two leaders of the main opposition parties have been invited, have increased to every six weeks.”

IF YOU’RE going to launch your new sports car without the baggage, don’t bill it as “the return of the legend”. And certainly don’t tease it with a slick trailer that’s at least as good as anything you’ll see on Netflix.

But that’s exactly what MG did on Monday, so baggage it is. Readers with longer memories will already know that they’ve been threatening to do this for ages because 18 months ago they showed off the two-seater Cyberster in concept car form, and now they’re edging ever closer to making a concept version. About ruddy time, because for those under the age of 15, MG is a company best known for sports cars, not me-too crossovers.

However, MG has stopped tip-toeing around its illustrious heritage. The first move its Chinese paymasters made after snapping up the brand was to put the old TF roadster, with some blink-and-you-miss-it tweaks, into production, but since then it’s been a stream of hatches and crossovers that could have come from any Asian carmaker. I can’t have been the only one who cringed when the MG 6 was launched a decade ago in two forms that nicked names from classic MGs – GT for the hatch, Magnette for the saloon – and showed them alongside a 1960s Midget on a mountain switchback in the TV ad. Nice try, but you couldn’t help conclude that you’d rather have the leaky old roadster.

But that was a long time ago and MG is now Britain’s fastest growing carmaker, thanks largely to a Popeye-esque diet of crossovers to build up your market strength, and being quick off the mark to spot the increasingly hefty appetite for electric-only offerings. It’s also making cars that are making cynical motoring writer types like me sit up and take note too; only a few weeks ago in this very column I reckoned the new MG4 was the firm’s first truly exciting model in more than a decade, and while I haven’t driven the latest MG5 yet, those who are praising it for being a small, unpretentious estate car that does away

with all the hype and just quietly gets on with the job in hand.

The Cyberster, on the other hand, is all about hype. It’ll almost certainly be MG’s slowestselling model because the queue for cheap, mass-market sports cars is tiny these days – with the Fiat/Abarth 124 Spider gone, there’s the Mazda MX-5, and that’s about it. The Cyberster will be an all-electric answer to what would have happened had the MGF/TF never gone out of production, and it looks great.

And for anyone wondering about whether it’s a rightful heir to that particular throne – it’s been designed by a team of Brits, too.

It could have been a clean break but MG’s also given its slick social media teaser the strapline Return of the Legend, which sounds like a rejected title for a Marvel sequel. It also means that it’s asking us to make sure we slot the Cyberster right alongside the MGA, the MGB, the Midget and the MGF the instant it’s launched, and means it will have to drive at least as well as a properly-sorted Midget MkIII from the moment it crunches off the gravel driveway. In other words, it’ll have to be brilliant because MG’s said that its own legend, carefully curated over nearly a century of delicately-honed roadsters, is returning.

But I’m not worried. Put it this way – everyone thought Daniel Craig would have a tough gig donning a tuxedo but Casino Royale was still a cracking film. No pressure, MG. David Simister, editor of Classic Car Weekly PEUGEOT’S kitted out its 208 with plusher trim levels. The new Active Premium+ and Allure Premium+ models replace the Active Premium and Allure Premium models as of this month, and while the prices remain the same they’ve been treated to tinted rear windows, air conditioning and automatic windscreen wipers as standard, plus a couple of subtle styling tweaks outside. The GT and Premium versions of the 208 remain unchanged.
