INSIDE THIS WEEK: Olympic medallist Anyika Onuora to open new store OLYMPIC medallist runner Anyika Onuora is set to open the new Aldi store in Maghull next week. Anyika, from Liverpool, won a bronze medal in the women’s 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. She will open the store at 8am on Thursday, April 7. The store on Northway will employ around 40 staff from the local community. Anyika, pictured, said: “I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store. It will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of Team GB.” Additionally, the new ally Aldi store is calling on local charities and food banks in Maghull to register with neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community. Local charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, up to seven days a week. Any charities in the area that would like to partner up with the Aldi store should email aldi@neighbourly.com.

REV REVAMP ON THE WAY FOR NEGLECTED PARK Facility to be transformed with children’s play area, paths, benches and trees after funding is secured Report by Tom Martin A NEGLECTED park in Thornton will be transformed with the arrival of a new children’s play area, as well as new bins, paths, benches and trees. Runnels Lane Park, which is the only park in R Thornton, will have a wide-scale revamp after local residents urged the council to improve the site for children and families. The new paths will be created around the edge of the site and the trees will be planted along the boundary of the park to improve the local environment and wildlife. The existing multi-use games area will also be refurbished. Once completed, a new group called Friends of Runnells Lane Park will help look after the site. Cllr Ian Moncur, cabinet member for health and wellbeing said: “This is the only public park in Thornton and it provides an important community space. “It’s fantastic to see improvements that will benefit people of all ages in the area in the pipeline.”

Funding has been secured by Manor Ward from the borough council’s Green Sefton service in partnership with the Neighbourhoods Team through the Veolia Environmental Trust, which support community projects across the whole of England. A contribution of Section 106 Planning monies has also been allocated to the park improvements. A drop-in session at the park was held last year to provide residents and park users with the opportunity to see the improvement plans and share their views with the council. Sefton Council is seeking members of the community to help establish a Friends of Runnells Lane Park group who would undertake volunteer duties and support events and activities. Those interested can contact Green Sefton by emailing greensefton@sefton.gov.uk. The work is scheduled to be completed and open to the public by the end of summer.
