Nightclub and late-night bar plan for resort attraction Report by Danielle Thompson
Southport Pier could house a night venue if plans get the go-ahead
THE TOWN’S famous pier could be set to have its own nightclub, if plans to turn its daytime cafe into a late-night bar are given the go-ahead. Southport Pier Cafe Limited of The Pier Pitstop have applied to Sefton Council for the granting of a premise licence. This would mean that the cafe at the end of the pier would be open to the public every day of the week from 9am to 3.30am – potentially used as a cafe by day and bar venue by night. The company has applied to be able to provide live music, recorded music and host dance performances as well as sell alcohol each day and provide late night refreshment
from 11pm to 3.30am. They have also applied to provide regulated entertainment (that of a similar description to music or dance) each day from 10am-3am. The Grade II listed structure, which is the second longest pier in the UK and the oldest cast iron pier, re-opened to the public in March after the landward end temporarily closed while contractors carried out the second stage of £2.9m improvement works. The project aims to create additional jobs, increase visitor numbers and secure Southport Pier as a valued asset for many years to come. Additional works include new RSPB telescopes to view wildlife and terrestrial and underwater webcams and television screens to view other marine life. Sefton Council also revealed that a new access point to the pier will also be constructed in the future. Continued inside
