On the road to recovery... Stephen Hunt by the sign he collided into.
A 61-YEAR-OLD pedal bike rider ended up unconscious on Marine Drive when he smashed into an unlit ‘road closed’ sign which had been placed across a pitch-black cyclepath. Stephen Hunt said he could have been killed as he made his way home to Crossens from Smedley Hydro in Birkdale where he works. He avoided serious injury even though he was flung from his bike onto the carriageway and ended up in hospital with severe concussion. The experienced cyclist was on the same route home he has been taking

for the last nine years, but claims he had no warning the traffic sign was obstructing the cyclepath and says it shouldn’t have been there at all. The signs are meant to warn motorists of a road closure further up Marine Drive at the Plough roundabout.
Lancs County Cricket Club snubs town... for Cumbria! Report by Henry James A DECISION by Lancashire Cricket Club not to play a county game in Southport this year, and instead stage it in Cumbria, has angered local officials. Chairman of Southport and Birkdale Sports Club, Tony Elwood, said they are ‘very disappointed’ that Lancashire will not be playing a four day game in the town this summer. Mr Elwood was speaking after Lancashire Cricket announced that Sedbergh School in Cumbria will host the club’s County Championship fixture against Durham starting on Sunday, June 30. He said: “Naturally, we are very disappointed, exceedingly frustrated and more than a little perplexed, but hardly surprised given the length of time discussions with Lancashire had been going on. “Nevertheless, after a series of highly successful, well attended and well received games over the past four years, it is galling not to get the nod. Especially when you consider that we have done everything Lancashire have asked of us, including investing heavily in improving our facilities. “However, we are buoyed by Lancashire’s statement that they’ll be back next year and a year off gives us time to regroup and give our brilliant volunteers some respite - so we’ll be looking to bounce back in 2020 even better than before.
