Council tax set to rise by almost 6% COUNCIL tax bills are set to rise by almost 6% in Sefton, with local authority chiefs blaming cuts in funding from central government and demands on social care. Councillors approved a budget on Thursday, March 1, which will mean an increase in Council Tax for 2018/19 of 2.99% along with a Social Care Council Tax Precept of 3% in 2018/19. Due to cuts in central government funding, Sefton Council faced a funding shortfall of £169million to provide services from 2011-17, even after savings of £64m were made. In total, the council will have lost 51% of central government funding between 2010 and 2020. Council Tax for a Band C property (for Sefton Council services) will rise from £1,278.70 in 2017/18 to £1,355.30 for 2018/19. With police and fire service precepts included, this means an overall rise from £1,492.31 to £1,581.55. It does not include the amounts charged by parish councils in some areas. Sefton Council leader Ian Maher, said: “The Government has been giving us less money to support the delivery of local public services every year. “Last year we agreed a three year budget plan to save £64m

by 2020 and we are broadly on target to deliver this. “To help us to deliver our partnership ambitions set out in the 2030 Vision, achieve the best possible outcomes for Sefton and ensure the financial sustainability of the Council, we have four priority areas of work. “These are: creating more and better jobs for local people; working together to deliver affordable services which achieve the best possible outcomes for our communities; making every pound count in everything we do and investing wisely and creatively to make and save money, grow faster and enable our communities to thrive.

HONOUR FOR OUR HILDA!
THE family of ‘Our Hilda’ Jean Alexander teamed up with the Mayor of Sefton this week to officially unveil a special plaque in her honour. The Champion launched the ‘Honour our Hilda’ campaign on the first anniversary of Jean’s death last October. We wanted a lasting memorial to her in Southport in recognition of her achievements both as an actress and her work here in Southport. Our campaign received support from all quarters of the town from people eager to see Jean recognised in the town she called home. And on Tuesday, those wishes came true when a specially commissioned plaque was unveiled by Sefton Mayor, Councillor Dave Robinson and Jean’s nieces Sonia Hearld and Valerie Thewlis in front of her extended family, friends and members of the public.
