The four fencers celebrate their victory
Fencing foursome on the button for victory TALENTED teenage fencers from Sefton have fought their way to a national competition victory! Scarisbrick Swords members Annabelle Montagu, 16, Sophia Neophytou and Grace Michell, both 15, along with 18-year-old Lilly-Ann Grayson from the Liverpool Fencing Club, joined forces to win the Cadet Winton Cup held recently in Somerset. They beat teams from London, Yorkshire and Wales to ensure the cup came back to the North West for only the
fourth time in the competition’s 32 year history. The inter-regional tournament is a gruelling two day, three weapon, fencing marathon, where each region of the UK fields teams of males and females. The region winning the largest number of matches overall is declared the Cadet Winton Cup champions. It is a particularly demanding event for the northern regions, as the teams have to be ready to fence at 9am, which requires some of the
Sefton fencers to wake at 4am in order to arrive on time! They then fence all day, with the last match on Saturday not held until 9pm in the evening. On the second day they complete the inter-regional matchups, fencing until 3pm on Sunday afternoon, making the whole event as much a test of endurance as skill. Lilly-Ann Grayson is from Formby, Sophia Neophytou from Crosby and Annabelle Montagu and Grace Michell are both from Southport.
