Report by Danielle Thompson Cllr Pugh said: “These (business rate reductions) could be a life-saver but I question the pace and speed of any expected changes. “With Beales up for sale and Central 12 sounding a note of alarm, we simply can’t wait long for new legislation to grind its way through parliament. “High street retail is continuing to

consolidate and crumble. The owners of Beales were voicing serious concerns over business rates over four years ago - presumably they have now lost patience! “Council budgets will be set by February and rely partly on business rates which would make it difficult for any new changes to be implemented for another 12 months, even if the government has worked out what a new scheme will look like. “I am not sure every Lord Street retailer can wait that long. “Ironically, one of the casualties of any new scheme will be the Council itself which purchased for £32million the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle. If business rates are slashed, this could knock a big hole in the money coming in from the Strand and make the purchase of the site with borrowed money look anything but prudent.”
