NO FIREWORK DISPLAY IN THE PARK THIS YEAR Town council make shock decision to cancel event due to ‘prohibitive costs’ but say it will return in 2020 Report by Jim Sharpe

Schools show green way for motor-racing MORE than 30 schools took part in the F24 race at Aintree Golf Centre recently as part of the Greenpower Challenge. The event was a national school’s competition, supported by the manufacturing company Siemens, where schools design, build and race electric cars. The event was the last in the season before the International Final which will take place at Silverstone on Thursday, October 17. The aim of the race was to complete as many of the 1.54m laps in an hour and a half, without crashing or the battery running out – the cars can travel up to 30mph.

IN a shock announcement which will disappoint many families in Maghull, the town council has announced that it will not be holding a fireworks display this year. The display is recognised as one of the best in Sefton and regularly attracts thousands of people from the town and surrounding areas. In recent years it has been held at the town’s cricket club on Old Hall fields and around 4,000 people attended last year’s event. And as well as the pyrotechnics, visitors were able to enjoy stilt walkers and fire breathers as well as dance performances and other entertainment. But the town council says it cannot meet the high costs in maintaining high safety standards for those who attend this year as they are already committed to funding a range of other activities and events. This includes the MaghullFest in the summer and a series of community events for Christmas and the New Year. And with Sefton becoming the ‘Borough of Culture’ in 2020 Maghull will play a significant role is additional special events - all this alongside considerable ongoing investment in the town’s parks and greenspaces. The decision to scrap this year’s display was described as “huge disappointment” by community activist Dave Hughes who has been a volunteer at

Crowds at last year’s firework display which was watched by around 4,000 people.

the events. He said: “I have been a volunteer at the firework event since 2014, so it is a huge disappointment personally, because not only is it a huge crowd pleaser, but the feedback that I get from the folk as they leave has always been so very positive. “So a lot of folk, parents, children, etc, will certainly be disappointed this year. “But I know It is also very costly and has to be organised many month’s in advance. “And at least it hasn’t been abandoned for ever, like the outdoor Halloween Cinema has. “Also the Civic Award night, which normally takes place later this month, has been put back until early next year. Simply because there is nothing at the

beginning of the year to celebrate, yet a lot of events happen at the end of the year. It is just a balancing exercise. Maghull Town Council chair of Community Services, Councillor Clare Carragher, told the Champion: “Maghull Town Council is committed to running events for our community and a fireworks display is the single most expensive event we hold. “This year we decided that the costs had become prohibitive as the council will not drop its high standards or lose other events planned for this year ’s calender.” She added that the council will budget for a firework display to be held in 2020.
