Defibrillator installed in memory of Katherine Report by Kenny Parker A DEFIBRILLATOR purchased in memory of a Lydiate woman who died after suffering a heart attack has now been placed in Maghull Square. Mark Wilcock led a fundraising campaign to buy four defibrillators after his wife Katherine died in Crosby last year. Despite receiving more than 23 minutes of CPR following a cardiac arrest, Katherine never recovered and passed away after being taken to hospital. It was later found that she had suffered from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome, which is commonly only diagnosed after a person has died

because it is so hard to detect. Had there been a defibrillator available Katherine would have stood a better chance of surviving. Mark has placed the defibrillators where Katherine worked, lived, sadly died, and where she was brought up which explains why it is placed in Maghull Square on the wall of Loc8 Estate Agents. Beverley Seel from Medical Rescue Limited came to conduct a training session with staff at local businesses in the square on how to use the defibrillator in the event of a cardiac episode. Kate Gostelow, Associate Partner at Loc8 Estate Agents, said that the company feel strongly about the cause and hope to raise awareness of its availability. “It is good for people to know that if someone in the area, such as at Morrison’s supermarket, has a heart attack that we have the defibrillator here.”

AN incredible fundraising effort from a schoolgirl has raised £1,000 for Woodlands Hospice. 12-year-old Olivia Jones, who attends Deyes High School, organised raffles, movie nights and collections over a number of weeks to raise money in memory of her granddad Mervyn, who was cared for at the hospice last year. Olivia, who lives in Maghull, recently visited Woodlands to hand over cheques and cash which amounted to exactly £1,000. She had arranged a food hamper raffle at schoo lafter visiting a number of local shops in Maghull’s Central Square with friends, Anna and Olivia, to ask for contributions. She also organised a movie night, with pizza donated by the local Domino’s and arranged a ‘Name the bear’ competition. Further donations also came in via her dad, Dave, who ran in the Liverpool Santa Dash and when local pub the Great Mogul discovered she was just short of her £1,000 target, they agreed to donate the £50 difference. Olivia and her family will now be adding an engraved leaf to the Hospice ‘Tree of Life’ to remember granddad Mervyn. Carole Riley, Individual Giving Manager at Woodlands Hospice, said: “We are always grateful for all the efforts people go to raise money for Woodlands, but when that effort is made by someone so young it makes it even more special. “Olivia has done a fantastic job and I’m sure her family and school will be proud of her achievements, as we all are.”
