JEALOUS LOVER IS JAILED AFTER MILK SHAKE BAR RAMPAGE Report by Lynda Roughley
A JEALOUS lover from Skelmersdale who left three people injured after running riot in a milk shake bar has been put behind bars. The incident began after Richard Shacklady saw his former partner, Natalie Stewart, working in the premises. During the trial the judge also criticised her previous behaviour which precipitated the violence. Shacklady burst into the Smoooch milk bar cafe in Hoghton Street, Southport and jumped on the counter “shouting nonsense” before attacking the owner ’s elderly parents. Then while repeatedly hitting the front window with a heavy metal stool Shacklady also caught Miss Stewart - who was going out with couple’s son, Matthew - with it causing a cut to her head. Jailing him for 20 months on Monday (June 10), Judge Brian Cummings, QC, described it as “a shocking incident.” He said that the graphic CCTV footage of the incident, “shows an incident of explosive violence. You started by attacking an elderly man and then assaulted his wife.” The judge pointed out that the couple both had pre-existing health conditions aggravated by the injuries they suffered at his hands and they have also suffered psychologically. Miss Stewart has since resumed her relationship with Shacklady and sent the judge a “strongly supportive letter” for him.

“She indicates she told you unspecified lies before the incident ‘to get a rise out of you’, and that, I’m afraid, was irresponsible to say the least,” said Judge Cummings. 28-year-old Shacklady, of Thurston, Skelmersdale, pleaded guilty to wounding on the basis of recklessness, two common assaults and criminal damage. Philip Hall, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court that the incident happened on April 4 this

year while 74-year-old Peter Dunn was working behind the counter at the premises with his wife, Pamela. When Shacklady jumped onto the counter Mr Dunn asked him to leave but he refused and while “standing over him rained down a number of blows to his head and slammed it into the counter.” His 65-year-old wife tried to stop it by getting in between them but he struck her in the face with Continued inside
