POLICE STATION TO CLOSE FOR UP TO 18 MONTHS FOR MAJOR UPGRADE Report by Henry James SKELMERSDALE Police Station is to close temporarily from next week for major refurbishment. The station in Southway is expected to be closed for between 12 and 18 months but the public have been reassured that a police presence will remain in the town with members of the Response and Neighbourhood teams being based at the fire station on Tanhouse Road, although this will not be open to the public. Lancashire Constabulary said that due to its age and condition, the police station is no longer fit for purpose and as such is being upgraded and modernised from the start of June. During this period the station will be closed while work is being carried out and the majority of staff and equipment will temporarily relocate to Ormskirk Police Station, about seven miles away (15 minutes drive). Chief Inspector Jill Halliwell said: “The work being carried out is essential maintenance, due to the age and construction of the building. We are committed to investing in the police station at

Skelmersdale, to make it an improved working environment for officers and staff and a better facility for the community, which is desperately needed.” The front desk at Skelmersdale will close at 4pm on Wednesday, April 17 with the Ormskirk front desk opening on Thursday, April 18 at 9am. Ormskirk front counter will then be open to members of the public Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 6pm.
Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, commented: “This is really positive for Skelmersdale and the wider community, with investment necessary to ensure that the station is fully fit for purpose going forward. “Residents should be reassured that the temporary closure during this time will not in any way impact on the policing service for those who live and work in the town, with neighbourhood policing teams still visible out in the community.”
Members of the Neighbourhood Team will also be in the PULSE Centre located in the Concourse, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10.30am and noon from Wednesday, April 24, where members of the public can drop in and have the chance to speak with the team about local issues. West Lancs MP Rosie Cooper said: “I am pleased to hear that Lancashire Constabulary are investing money in the upgrading of Skelmersdale Police Station and committing to their long-term future in the town. Unfortunately, this means that the police will operate out of Ormskirk’s station for between 12 and 18 months while this work is being carried out. “I have been assured that there will be no reduction in police presence on the beat in Skelmersdale. Having met with Lancashire Constabulary’s assistant chief constable today, they have agreed to consider the provision of an alternative front desk during the refurb if at all possible.” The public can still report incidents at lancashire.police.uk/reportonline or by ringing 101 for non-emergency and 999 for emergencies only.
