‘We were left heartbroken by men who stole our treasured possessions’
Lewis Callaghan
Dale Kelly
A BURGLARY victim from Freshfield has opened up to a court about the ‘devastation’ wreaked on his family after two intruders ransacked their Formby home and stole irreplaceable family heirlooms. Ian Parnell and his family arrived home on June 5 to find their home had been broken into and treasured possessions taken including a Rolex watch given to Ian’s father by his mother on their wedding day, jewellery and electrical equipment, as well as cash. The heartless thieves also stole an Xbox which belonged to their 14-yearold son who suffers from learning difficulties. The youngster had saved up for it himself by doing odd jobs including cleaning cars and walking neighbours' dogs. Mr Parnell spoke out about the offence after the two men responsible were sentenced to a total of more than 10 years at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday,
Report by Danielle Thompson August 9. Dale Kelly, 24, of no fixed address was sentenced to six years in prison while Lewis Callaghan, 21, of no fixed abode was sentenced to four years and eight months. The sentencing comes as part of Operation Castle, the force's ongoing response to burglary offences across Merseyside. Looking straight at the burglary pair stood in the dock, Mr Parnell said: “Lewis Callaghan and Dale Kelly, I am here to look you both in the eyes and to tell you that the aftermath of you breaking into our home and steeling our personal and private belongings has gone way beyond the physical damage you caused. “On arriving home on June 5, my family and I had to go through the degrading and demeaning experience of
entering a home that had been burgled, ransacked and left in complete disarray, a home that we had left earlier that day, clean, tidy and in order, a home that we had felt at peace in and where we had seen each other off to work and school in a happy, loving and relaxed environment. “I am truly in love with my wife and son, they are my world, my inspiration and my reason to be, I have never felt like I wanted to hurt someone, but I do now, I would so like a few minutes alone with you both to administer my own form of justice but I am an honest lawabiding person and I realise that would make me as bad and as inhumane as you both are. “One of the items you stole was my son’s Xbox, controllers and games. My son, my pride and joy, suffers with learning difficulties, and yet he worked to pay every penny for the items you stole from him. Continued inside
