Merry Christmas Borough of culture funds available for community groups COMMUNITY groups and local organisations can now apply for support to help run projects as part of Sefton’s Borough of Culture year.

Local groups can apply for funds from Sefton Council with two different tiers of funding available – up to £5,000 and £5,000-£15,000.

The money could be used to help them organise events throughout 2020 or help support event management, communications and marketing, or connections with other partner organisations.

The Borough of Culture (BoC) title is awarded by the Liverpool City Region’s Combined Authority to one of its six local authorities on a rotating, annual basis.

2019 was Wirral’s year while 2020 will be dedicated to Sefton with a raft of new, existing and community led events planned for the year.

Cllr Trish Hardy, cabinet member for communities, is asking community groups to consider applying for funding.

She said: “While we are looking at organising some spectacular larger scale events as part of our Borough of Culture Year, the foundation of our year will be the smaller events organised by our valued communities.

“This is where this support and the funding pot comes in really helpful as it can enable more localised community groups and organisations to give them a boost in arranging something to celebrate Borough of Culture.

“If you are group and are thinking of running something during 2020, please get in touch, download the form and tell us your plans! This way we can make sure our year of events appeals to everyone right across Sefton.”

COUPLE HAILED IN BBC STAR AWARDS FOR THEIR CARE AND COMPASSION ‘The social club they organise is an amazing place for young adults with learning difficulties and we wanted them to know we are hugely grateful’ Report by Kenny Parker A COUPLE who organise a social club for adults with learning disabilities have been honoured for their care and compassion with a BBC North West Christmas Star award.

Mike and Viv Penn set up the Maghull Young Adults Social Club 17 years ago to provide a place for their son Jonathan to socialise.

Jonathan has learning difficulties and the couple wanted a safe place for him to go on a Friday night where he could meet and make friends and have fun like other young adults.

The club, which meets at The Venue at, Maghull Town Hall, is now attended regularly by more than 100 young adults each month and is so appreciated by its members and their families that Mike and Vic were nominated twice for the BBC North West’s Christmas Star award.

The award honours people who make a difference to their communities.

“It is just an amazing place for young adults with learning difficulties,” said Sue Egersdorff, who

nominated the couple. “They can come here and just be who they are.”

As she presented the award, Sue said: “For 17 years you have supported us with all your love and care and your compassion. And we want you to know we are hugely grateful.”

Mike said: “We were surprised and delighted to get the award. We knew the BBC were coming along but we thought it was part of a documentary about people with learning disabilities, so we were really were shocked on the night!”

Viv said they originally launched it because their son wanted to go into Liverpool but they knew he just would not be able to manage.

Viv added: “We wanted to make it a Friday night with a disco and bar, so people can meet, relax, have a good time, have a drink, make new friends, a bit like going into town. And they all have a great time.”

Members of the club also added their praise for the couple.

One said: “It’s nice and relaxing and it helps to keep your mind off things.

We are here to have fun. And it is only £1, cheaper than anywhere else in the world!”

A TRUSTED Tesco employee from Lydiate brazenly stole thousands of pounds in a refund scam - and even carried on after her bosses quizzed her about it.

Appalled colleagues finally blew the whistle on Julie Evans who had also entangled another customer service desk worker in her dishonest scheme.

She found a job soon after being dismissed but when the court proceedings were publicised she was sacked, added Mr Lander.

Paul Woods, defending, said Evans had never been in trouble before and was unlikely to be able to find work again.

He told the court she would borrow the money from relatives to pay back the store.

Pupils’ carols ‘brought generations together’

Plaza cinema duo are up for BAFTA award Report by Tom Martin TWO influential people behind the success of the Plaza Cinema have been nominated for a BAFTA award for their “exceptional contributions to their communities through film.”

Martin Fol and Janet Dunn have been jointly nominated by the The British Academy of Film and Television Arts in their second annual ‘For the Love of Film’ competition.

Nearly 300 applications from across the UK were considered by a special BAFTA jury, including industry experts director Amma Asante and broadcaster Edith Bowman, and Martin and Janet made the short list.

Martin, who is the manager of the Waterloo cinema, and Janet, who is a chair of trustees, were selected along with only nine other people.

There will be two winners, to be announced in January, and they will be invited to the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, February 2, before enjoying dinner and an overnight stay at the Savoy Hotel in London.

BAFTA chief executive Amanda Berry, said: “We’re proud to shine a light on these dedicated individuals from across the country, people who

do what they do purely ‘for the love of film.’

“Now in the second year of the competition, so many of the people who have been brought to our attention have demonstrated an incredible passion for film in their communities, which reinforces our belief that film plays a vital role in our everyday lives.”

Martin and Janet help run the Plaza as a volunteer-run community cinema that offers a lot more than just the latest films.

They also run education programmes to schools, the voluntary sector and the general public.

As well as screenings at the Plaza, Janet and Martin’s work includes running film projects for young people aged 13-19.

These courses train young people in film production, giving them the opportunity to experience the magic of having their work shown on the big screen of the Plaza itself.

Dementia-friendly screenings are also offered at the Plaza, with programming designed to trigger memories.

As a result of inclusive programming, the Plaza Cinema benefits from a wealth of volunteer support and the devotion of its local community members.

Merseytravel to run free buses to hospitals on Christmas Day RESIDENTS who need to make hospital visits on Christmas Day can make the most of a free bus service by Merseytravel.

Buses will be free to use but operated on a limited service on December 25 from around noon until around 6pm on routes serving hospitals across Merseyside.

These included traditional carols and more modern Yuletide selections, as well as a song which had been specially written at the school for this year’s BBC Children in Need fundraiser.

After the performance, which was very warmly received by the Waterloo Park regulars, the children

ST Joseph’s Hospice is offering Christmas tree collections to residents in Waterloo, Crosby, Thornton, Hightown, Formby and Maghull in January.

Volunteers from the Thornton hospice will be out in force collecting real Christmas trees on January 11 and 12 for a minimum donation of £10.

Christmas trees can also be taken to the hospice, on Ince Road in Thornton, over the same weekend for a minimum donation of just £5.

The collections are run entirely by volunteers in partnership with Just Helping, a UK charity which inspires people to contribute to their local community.

The scheme raises valuable funds for the hospice each year.

It is also an environmentally friendly way to dispose of your tree as it will be recycled and used in the hospice grounds.

Housing firm donate ÂŁ5,000 worth of food to food banks A HOUSING firm based in Bootle has donated more than ÂŁ5,000 worth of food and supplies to local food banks.

One Vision Housing donated pallets of food and essential supplies to Veterans HQ, Seaforth Family Wellbeing Centre and the South Sefton Food Bank.

Organised in partnership with His Church, the overall donation was valued at over ÂŁ5,000 and will help support families who are experiencing food crisis this Christmas.

The number of people turning to food banks is growing with the Trussell Trust, who support

the South Sefton Food Bank, reporting a 19% increase this year in the demand for food parcels compared to last year.

A variety of goods such as cereals, soup, nappies and other basic necessities were included in OVH’s donation along with a few festive treats for Christmas.

Lorry driver stabbed with machete in road rage attack Report by Tom Martin A LORRY driver was stabbed with a machete by another driver during a sickening road rage incident in Bootle.

The 25-year-old needed hospital treatment after his attacker, driving a silver BMW 1 series, used the weapon to cause a serious injury to his arm.

Mayor of Sefton, Cllr June Burns, help open the new nursery

Carra ‘blown away’ by food donations to his charity appeal JAMIE Carragher was “blown away” after an appeal from his charity led to more than 200 hampers being delivered to struggling families over Christmas.

The 23 Foundation asked for donations of food and these were then packaged and sent to vulnerable members of the community.

Bootle-born Carragher said: “I am blown away by the support from the community.

“Donations of all kinds of food means we've been able to provide 200 hampers for those struggling over Christmas.

“A big thanks to the community and the community learning service on Cambridge Road and the many volunteers we’ve had helping out.”

The 23 Foundation was set-up by the former Liverpool player in 2009 to help make a difference to the young people of Merseyside by offering “help to give local kids a chance.”

The tree is lit up again in time for the festive season thanks to a local electrician.

Tree lights which were wrecked by yobs are repaired in time for Christmas!

Report by Tom Martin LIGHTS on Bootle’s Community Christmas tree which were damaged by yobs have been repaired in time for the festive period.

The Champion reported in N ovember how Bootle Action Group helped organise a switchon event for the tree next to Bootle Library, which was attended by the Mayor of Sefton.

However, less than a month later and the lights were vandalised” by yobs along with a small wooden fence that surrounds the tree.

The lights, with the associated insurance, cost £650 and the wooden fence costs £350, so the community group were worried they would have to pay £1,000 to reinstate the fea-

tures. But thankfully the lights have been repaired just in time for Christmas after an electrician was called out to take a look at the damage.

Michael Brennan, from Bootle Action Group, said if they do a similar switch-on event next year they will have to use a metal cage to stop any vandalism.

A metal cage was last used in 2017, but locals described it as “ugly ” so a smaller wooden fence was brought in, but this was too small to stop yobs from damaging the lights.

Mr Brennan said: “The tree lights on the Christmas tree next to the library have not been working for 11 days but thankfully they have been repaired which is a relief.

“Sadly the consequence of this is that next year, if the group decides to put on another event, the ugly metal cage will be back!”

Tickets on sale for mayor’s charity night THE Mayor of Sefton will hold a Charity Burns Night in Bootle to raise money for charity.

It will take place at Bootle Town Hall on Saturday, January 25, and all money raised from the evening will go to the Mayor of Sefton’s Charity Fund.

It starts at 7pm, and there will be food, live entertainment and a raffle. Tickets are

now on sale at £20.

Mayor of Sefton, Councillor June Burns said “I am really looking forward to celebrating the New Year with guests who are attending the evening.

“With live entertainment, food and a raffle with great prizes, this event is sure to be a highlight in your social calendar. All money raised on the

CCTV appeal over stolen jewellery and bank card fraud Report by Danielle Thompson POLICE want to speak to these two men over an investigation into a burglary when jewellery and a bank card was stolen from a house.

Unknown offenders gained entry to a house on Marine Crescent in Waterloo and stole jewellery and a bank card at some point between Friday, November 1 and Wednesday, November 6.

The card is then believed to have been used to attempt to make purchases at JD Sports in the Traf-

ford Centre, Manchester. These transactions were declined and enquiries are ongoing.

Inspector Beth Blake said: “We think the men pictured may hold vital information so I would encourage them, or anyone who recognises them, to come forward.

“To be a victim of burglary and fraud is extremely distressing and we are determined to find those responsible for this and any similar offence, and put them before the courts.”

AROUND 100 people from across Sefton involved with an innovative form of supported accommodation for local adults enjoyed their annual Christmas party last week.

Hightown Cricket Club was the venue for the fun event organised by staff from the Southport-based Shared Lives Service, run by adult social care providers, New Directions.

A disco, a raffle, a hot-andcold buffet and party games including old favourite Play Your Cards Right were part of a packed programme of activities at the well-attended gettogether.

Shared Lives gives people the opportunity to benefit from a safe, friendly and supportive environment by living as part of a carer’s family.

Shared Lives assistant manager, Sandra Kay, said: “The Guests enjoying the festive fun at the party at Hightown Cricket Club. attended.”

Drink drive warning for motorists

A CHARITY has been thanked by the mum of a boy who died in a tragic accident near Bootle Oriel Road railway station in 2003 after they produced a beautiful wreath for his memorial.

Stephen Nesbitt died when he was eight years old after he stood on a live rail.

There is a poignant memorial at the station in his memory which also acts as a reminder to other children of the dangers of playing near railway lines.

MOTORISTS in Sefton are being warned against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as police prepare for a rise in the number of arrests over the Christmas period.

Merseyside Police are forced to make more roadside stops during this time of the year and they are reminding locals to avoid being punished for drink or drug driving.

Police in Merseyside have already arrested 50 people for drink driving and more than 80 people for drug driving this month and they expect this number to rise by the end of the year.

No festive break for beach patrols Report by Tom Martin THERE will be no festive break for the lifeguards patrolling Crosby beach as they expect a wave of visitors over the Christmas period.

It will be business as usual for RNLI lifeguards at Crosby beach, which is the charity’s only 365-daya-year patrolled beach, and they are offering safety advice to those planning a Christmas Day visit to see the Iron Men. Over the festive period, more people than ever flock to the beach and RNLI lifeguards will be on hand to offer safety advice and help anyone who should get into trouble.

RNLI lifeguard Liam Crosbie said: “Whether it’s people looking to work off their Christmas dinner, children looking for space to try their new toys or

families keen to show visiting relatives the statues, Crosby beach is busy over the festive period. “The main risk on the beach is people out walking out to the statues and getting cut off by the tide or stuck in the mud. “We’d really encourage people to check the tide times and remain within 50 meters of the promenade when enjoying the beach and be aware of the risks, especially the mud “If you do find yourself in trouble, our advice is to keep as still as possible and call 999 and ask for the coastguard.�

Siobhan Murphy who will be one of two lifeguards patrolling Crosby beach on Christmas Day said: “Working over Christmas is really not too bad, knowing you are on hand to help people makes it all worthwhile. People are always in such a good mood and bring us mince pies, chocolate and hot drinks to show their appreciation to us for being there, which is really kind.�

‘We desperately need a miracle for Doris’ Report by Danielle Thompson A DESPERATE appeal has been launched for a ‘Christmas miracle’ for a 13 year old rescue dog whose owner has been admitted to hospital.

Staff at Freshfields Animal Rescue in Ince Blundell first took in lurcher Doris six years ago and this is the fourth time she has been returned to them.

They are looking for a kind-hearted person to take her in as her owner is in hospital being treated for a terminal illness.

Freshfields volunteer Debbie Hughes said: “We are heartbroken to welcome Doris back into our care after spending four years in a loving home.

“We desperately need a miracle for Doris Doris. She is one of those unlucky dogs who has never quite found her happy ever after, as each time it has been cruelly snatched away from her.

“She was originally abandoned at the rescue late one winter night back in 2013. We were horrified to find she had been shoved into a small animal pen and was left alone and cold in the dark.

“After such a cruel start, Doris became deeply attached to those who gave her an ounce of kindness, so much so that she would become extremely distressed when we had to leave her.

“Doris soon won over the hearts of a family of dog walkers who regularly came to the rescue to take her for walks and so after weeks of building a strong bond they decided to adopt her.

“Sadly after just one week with her new family it became apparent that she could not live with children and so she was returned to us.

“Several months later Doris found what we thought would be her forever home with a retired couple but after just five months the man suddenly

passed away and the lady could not cope on her own so Doris came back to us once more.

“After so much upheaval and heartbreak landing back in kennels was traumatic for Doris and the kennel staff, she really struggled here and we desperately needed to find her a home and special human to love her.

“We launched an appeal in the Champion and a kind man came forward to offer Doris the home she desperately needed.

“For the past four and a half years Doris has been loved and doted on by her dad but sadly he is battling with a terminal illness and has had to go into hospital.

“Doris had nowhere to go and the family turned to us for help.

“We moved some things around so Doris could come back to safety with us.

“We are full to bursting at this time of year but we could not turn her away. Poor Doris is now around 13 years old, she is bewildered and confused.

“She desperately misses her dad and kennels are no place for her. We know that Doris' dad will be just as devastated as we are knowing his special, beloved companion is back in kennels.

“We desperately need a foster home for Doris to help heal her broken heart this Christmas.

“All costs will be covered if the foster home is local. Please note that we need foster carers to have their own transport to be able to meet appointments with our vet and potential adopters.

“Unfortunately Doris cannot live with other animals or children and will need a home with someone around for most of the day. Please help us to help Doris. She is breaking our hearts.”

But am I downhearted - NO. Me and my lovely dogs Tina and Cinders will be able to enjoy a Christmas Day feast of roasted duck and all the trimmings in comfort.

Did I say ‘lovely dogs?’ Make that my lovely Tina.

Cinders is in the dog house following a recent incursion (before the fridge was working) resulting in a pork steak meant for my dinner (cooked) going into the greedy little hairy object’s tummy instead. She really is a canine waste unit - though faulty in that she sees no difference between waste and the good stuff.

There is one small drawback.

All this has cost quite a lot and I now find cash reserves severely dented.

And I still need some carpeting as well as several household items which disappeared in the big clear-out.

Mind you when I see people trying to sleep on the streets on a freezing cold night I really do wake up to the fact that I could never imagine the utter misery this must be.

I simply do not feel qualified say what should be done to alleviate such a stain on our society.

There are, surely, bags of folk employed to sort out this kind of disaster, and enough politicians to supply the cash needed - a mile or two of a new

motorway spending could surely be diverted!

Oh, and as a postscript to my home improvements, I don’t know which energy supplier you presently use - but if it is anything like mine then I can only hope that no faults develop over Christmas - or for that matter at any time of the year.

Just try phoning them - but best book a short holiday while you wait to get through.

You are offered a ‘service’ to join the queue, which sounds like a good idea.

You just have to punch in your home phone number and are given an estimated time when they will ring you back. I tried that and was told the call should come between 17 and 30 minutes.

It never did. Or put it this way it hadn’t when I ran out of patience more than an hour later.

By a happy coincidence though, all this was going on while electricians were in the house and one listened to my tale of woe.

He said to leave it to him. He had a secret emergency number which the public were not allowed to use.

He got through in 30 seconds flat, explained that they would be finishing their work in the next few hours.

But even then he was told I’d need to phone them and tell them when all was ready so an engineer could inspect not the actual work done but the certificate from qualified electricians.

My electrical chum offered to relay the relevant parts to them but no, only their presence would allow them to fit their own main power fuse (as opposed to the perfectly good one my electricians had been using.)

In the end he used the ‘secret number’ again pointing out that I was a 73 year old pensioner and they promised to send someone out within two hours.

Which they did (just). So a very Merry Christmas to Scottish Power. Bah, Humbug!

With winter in full swing, our reserve is a real treasure trove of wildlife. The festive break is the perfect time to get outside and walk off those Christmas treats! On the mere there’s a whole host of birds ranging from wigeon and teal to whooper swans and pink footed geese.

With the cold weather comes an influx of hungry birds who struggle to get their own food in winter. Thankfully, we have a large number of bird feeders around the centre to ensure the birds get the nutrition they need.

Our Janet Kear Hide and Kingfisher Hide are great for watching the comings and goings of smaller birds such as chaffinch, goldfinch and blue tit.

One of our biggest draws over the winter are the whooper swans which have migrated over from Iceland.

As a charity passionate about conservation, our staff do

a lot of work with this species. We have a team of Swan Research Volunteers who keep track of the comings and goings of the swans on the mere.

Bring the kids and get involved with our Tale of Two Swans event. There’s a free activity book packed with swan-themed activities. Head through our replica swan pipe and learn all about what happens when we do a swan catch at the centre. Take your swan measurements and create your own swan ring to wear as you explore our wetlands. Don’t forget to try swan spotting at the Discovery Hide, how many rings can you read?

These beautiful swans only stay with us for the winter, so make sure you come and see them while you can.

A FATHER of three who died after he fell while working at a house in Aintree was described as an “amazing person who was devoted to his family” by his brother in a moving tribute.

Lee Howarth, who was aged in his 40s, was working on a house on School Lane on the morning of Thursday, December 12 when the tragic accident took place.

Mr Haworth is a former pupil of Bootle High School pupil, and later moved to Huyton but still has family in Sefton.

His brother Chris, who lives in Crosby, said: “Our Lee was cruelly taken from us in a tragic accident.

“I can not put into words the pain we are all feeling at the moment.

“We are devastated. Lee was an amazing person, he would always find time to help anybody.

“He loved his wife Jacki and kids Rhys, Lilly and Jack so much and would do anything for them, I am so proud to be his big brother and friend, I will always love and miss you mate.”

More than 100 tributes and messages of Lee Howarth pictured with his family. condolence have been posted on social media since wrote: “Devastated. Lee was one of the kindest and Lee’s death was announced. most genuine person I’ve ever known. Hybrid version does away with its four-wheel-drive VAUXHALL has just launched a hybrid version of its Grandland X that also does away with four-wheel-drive to save fuel costs.

The new version is a plug-in

hybrid that can do 34 miles on electricity alone, with the batteries taking care of driving around town and the 1.6-litre petrol engine kicking in for longer drives.
