Canal walk to raise funds for cancer charity A CANCER charity will launch The Litherland Walk of Hope to raise funds and awareness to fight brain tumours. The Brain Tumour Research charity will hold the special walk along the Leeds and Liverpool canal on Saturday, September 29, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the north west. Starting at the Jubilee Pub, in Litherland, the route takes walkers along the banks of the canal for ten miles, circling back to the pub where fundraisers will be able to enjoy 20% off their lunch. Andrea Pankiw, Community Fundraising Manager at Brain Tumour Research, said: “You can bring the whole family with you and enjoy all the beautiful scenery that the route passes through, all whilst raising vital funds. “Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 each year than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.” The registration fee is £10 for individuals and £20 for families. All walkers will receive a t-shirt and, upon completing the walk, be awarded with a medal for being part of the charity’s fantastic Fighting Force. The money raised will go towards Brain Tumour Research which is funding dedicated UK Centres of Excellence where scientists are focused on improving outcomes for patients and, ultimately, finding a cure. FEARS LANDMARK PUB COULD BE TURNED INTO FLATS Building sold to unknown owners after advertised as suitable for residential use Report by Ron Ellis THERE are fears one of Crosby’s bestknown pubs could be turned into flats after the building was sold after being closed for several weeks. The Crosby pub on Liverpool Road was listed on property website Fleurets for £450,000. However, it appears the pub has now been taken off the market after it was listed as ‘sold’ by Fleurets for an undisclosed price. The identity of the new owner is unknown, but Fleurets had previously advertised the pub as being suitable for a change of use to a residential or retail property. This concern has been echoed by The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) who told the Champion that the sellers of the property, Ei Group, “have a reputation” for selling pubs and stipulating in the deal that they must be turned into flats. The Ei Group, which used to be Enterprise Inns, is the largest pub company in the UK, with around 5,000 properties, predominantly run as leased and tenanted pubs. A spokesperson for CAMRA told the Champion: “Ei Group has a reputation for selling pubs for conversion to flats and even stipulating in the sale that it cannot continue as a pub (a restrictive covenant). “After we campaigned on the issue, planning permission for change of use has to be The Crosby still has a ‘For Sale’ sign even though the building has been sold.
