BANKING GIANT SET TO GET THE GO AHEAD FOR £75m TOWN HQ Report by Tom Martin
BANKING giant Santander is one step closer to starting work on a new £75million headquarters in Bootle. Sefton Council is due to hold a Planning Committee meeting today (Wednesday, October 16) when they are likely to approve the proposal to build a state-ofthe-art 220,000 sq ft campus for 2,500 staff. The proposal also includes plans for a new public park. As part of the plans, Santander will demolish their outdated 1968 building, on Bridle Road and replace it with a modern office facility. A report published by the council ahead of the Planning Committee reveals their intention to give the new HQ the go-ahead. It states: “The proposal is for the redevelopment of Santander ’s Bootle campus, to create a high quality and highly sustainable office development, which will continue to be used by Santander. Carragher signs up for new campaign to stop children turning to crime FORMER Liverpool FC star turned soccer pundit, Jamie Carragher, has backed a new police campaign which will encourage local sports clubs to look at ways to prevent young people from turning to a life of crime. The ex-Reds player, who was born in Bootle, has signed up for the role of engaging with sporting groups and clubs to see how they can work with the newly-created Violence Reduction Unit. Set-up by Merseyside Police following a £3.7million fund from the Home Office, the Violence Reduction Unit brings together local police, health and education professionals, community leaders and other key stakeholders to understand
the causes of serious violence in Merseyside. To help launch the campaign, an event was held at Goodison Park on Wednesday, October 9 which was attended by Carragher, alongside fellow Reds legend Ian Rush and Everton FC ambassadors Graham Stuart and Ian Snodin. Carragher said: “It was a great afternoon discussing how to help the young people of Merseyside especially through employment. The knock on effect is our city is a much safer place.” The Violence Reduction Unit will intervene when children are at risk of being excluded from school, criminal exploitation or committing serious violence.
